I think I know what you're getting at my 298 Husqvarna XP... Is a 6 cubic-inch saw or 99 cubic centimeters.... I loaned it to a lager.... He said the thing is an animal.... Built in 1986 through 88... They told me the 2100 is a carbon copy almost all the parts interchange ....They discontinued them because they were too hard to start... They were a souped-up factory Saw ... It's a collector's item.....Except I put a compression release on mine...as per mechanics instructions..... It's heavy but it's got some power when that piston heats up..... My cylinder bore looks pristine... It still has tons of compression.... I tortured it that one time making an 8-inch by 28 inch by 10 ft long spruce beam.. but the mechanic says. Don't be afraid to put some load on it that saw can take it. And he said he could handle a 5 ft bar.... And he's right.... It still runs good ... I bought it in 1989..... I've cut... Lots of alder firewood and I cut down on 5 ft diameter spruce tree with it.... I lied it was only 59 inch diameter....

So glad you did this video and brought that saw back to life. Little story, Jan 1985 i got married, Aug 1985 bought my first house, Nov 1985, bought my first chainsaw a Stihl 028 Wood Boss(WB). 39 years later I have still have the same wife, house and chainsaw. I used the saw quite a bit the first 10 years I had it as I heated with firewood. The last 29 years the saw is semi retired but still in use. It will start the 3rd or 4th pull every time. Amazingly it is completely original except the airfilter and chain. Has the original 39 year old spark plug. When I pass it will go to my oldest son. Seems silly, but this video brought a few tears to my eyes. Thanks again, love your channel.

Hi Bre obviously I am missing something. When you made the new breather line you put a couple of set screws in it which baffled this old man? How does the breather work when it plugged up?
I watch every video and I love when something work you look to get all giddy it cracks me up every time, it doesn’t get old as many time as I’ve seen you do it! I can totally relate.

    • @JohnSmith-pl2bk
      @JohnSmith-pl2bk หลายเดือนก่อน +4

The set screws have a very fine thread.
Air gets sucked in spiralling along these threads.
The gap in the threads is too fine for the fuel mix to leak out when the saw is running as the carb is drawing in fuel from the tank....and air gets drawn past the threads to replace the fuel...otherwise there would be a vacuum in the tank if it was sealed...which would cause the saw to stop through eventual lack of fuel..
The only time you might get any spillage past the two set screws is if you fill the tank of a hot saw on a hot day...and the fuel expands (boils) from the heat pressurising the fuel, expanding it and forcing it past the screws.....
As soon as the saw is started the fuel gets drawn into the carb and the air enters the tank via the vent....

I learned everything I know about small engines from you. As a retired air cooled mech, ( nice type 1) I was left a 028 WB from Dad. I watched everything you had. First practice pawn shop Craftsman full tear down and pt. Got comfy time for Dad's death present. New china tune up kit. Man it finally kinda ran and drove me nuts! I pulled that fly wheel 3+ times cleaned points since couldn't find any. Then accidentally happened upon Tryldactyl converting a 031 digital... Hmmm... It's awesome! Dependable and starts on 4th pull Everytime! Thank you for all the information and now I can't keep out the neighbors and friends saws and weed eaters. Lucky I have my tools still. I would leave picture but it won't let me. Love from E Wa

points and condenser(always as a pair). it's common for the capacitor(condenser) to fail first, which causes the points to burn up in an arcing death, which also produces weak spark.
I'm late 40's now, but as a teen/punk kid, I was the go to friend for carburetor and points/condenser timing adjustment, as well as many other things.

She's just as dependable as ever and has only needed 1 tune up, 3 bars and I've lost track of how many chains in 42 years.
The main problem I have with it is my hands locking up while running it due to this saw is pre antivibe but we still get her out a couple times a year just for old times sake.
    I also have a MS 460 Magnum, a 028 AV Super Wood boss, a 029 Farm boss, a MS 180 and a Husky 543 XP.
All of these are great saws with exception to the 180. This is actually my second one because the dealer got sick of working on the first one and just gave me another new saw to get me out of their hair. At one point it was back in their shop 3 times in one week! LOL
The second one was a little bit beter but ended up pretty much a space waster in our saw cabinet.

On a Japanese car with a ballast resistor....
it is almost always the ballast resistor that is broken...resistance wire burnt out
since it "runs" when the starter circuit is engaged...
but when the key is released to the "run" position...
there is no circuit through the ballast resistor...
      so the engine immediately dies...

As you said towards the end: "they don't make them this good anymore!" I have an old 031 AV from 1978 that has been cutting firewood every winter pretty much since it was made. I know for a fact it has never been rebuilt or cracked open because it was given to be by the original purchaser who was getting too old to get out in the woods. He says he just took good care of it. He said he never even rebuilt the carb, just changed the spark plug a few times and kept the filters clean. The old girl starts in 2-4 pulls, and it cuts above it's weight still. I actually find myself reaching for it even with my more modern saws looking at me on the shelf wondering what they did wrong. These old saws were tanks.

Back in the 80's I had a 2000 square foot house in Indiana that had a wood fired furnace. I burned 4 to 5 cords of wood per season. I wore out a Mculloch after 2 years and bought a Stihl 028 Wood Boss with an 18" bar. That saw cut every piece of hardwood firewood for over 10 years with only minimum maintenance required. It always needed several pulls to start, but would run all day once it got running. Great saw.

I have the same saw that had the same issue. The coil was good but wouldn't run. I installed an after market Atom chip in place of the points. Many years later, it is still my best and favorite saw. Back then the chip was $10.00. Now they are twice as much but still a cheap and easy fix. Keep that old coil. They are gold.

Great video - glad you were able to restore the saw! When I was a teen decades ago now my dad sent me to buy a chainsaw but it had to be a Stihl because a friend of his who was an engineer and tool enthusiast told him that was the only brand of saw worth a darn. I didn't know anything other than the cheapest Stihl I could find was an 021 for about $250 or 300 back then so I got it instead of the 023 for $50 more figuring my dad would appreciate me being frugal like he was. I had used a friends saw so I showed dad how to start it and use it. I could tell it scared the crap out of him and he wanted nothing to do with it so gave me all the sawing chores around the house which was fine with me. He never did run that saw and passed over a decade ago but I still have the 021 in my shed and it still runs though I have replaced air filter and plug once as well as fuel lines. I still chuckle when I think about this story and tell myself that I should have spend his extra $50 on the 023 back then had I know it would be my saw and last so long.

They had rebuilt the original carb. Fought it like you did and finally switched it over to electronic and fired right off. 8 years later, still using it as my middle saw.

When i was 13 my dad bought me a 08s Stihl to use when we cut wood ,My dads saw was a 090AV pure horse power saw , come forward 48 years and i still have that saw ! I saved it from being sold or given away by my sister as my parents have passed on , I't didn't do alot of work in its lifetime and ended with a post boring machine fitted to it and become rarely used ,the original bar and chain's where still with it ,so i just took it ,I cleaned it up it was full of spiders and webs and just covered in dust and caked on saw dust & hadn't been used for 20 years at least , i fitted a new tank vent as it was rotted off and thought lets see if it runs, cleaned out oil & fuel tank refilled the oil tank and mixed some 25to1 fuel mixx and about 5-6 pulls later she fired up! and the longer it ran the better the throttle response was to the point i haven't had to adjust carby because it runs beautiful ! I fitted and new roll frame cover ,What a job that is and the 08s looks almost like a new one , I do a few cuts with it a couple times a year but mostly it's there to remind me of my dad ! I have other Stihl saws ms661,ms391and the stick saw 009L all which i use for the timber cutting or trimming my trees

While I'll never own or use a chainsaw, i really love this video. Bre made it fascinating! Diagnosing the problem, never giving up. That shows dedication.
The C&W soundtrack; the roosters crowing; the nice toys (Corvette Stingray, VW Bettle; Mercury Cougar) all are a great background for us gearheads.
I only wish I could have brought my Sears Craftsman mower to her that I fought with for the last 12 years - I'm sure she could have gotten it to work.

I remember working with points and condensers when I was younger on 60's cars. I would always throw in an aftermarket electronic ignition whenever I could. I hated fooling with the gaps and they could be so finicky at times. You could have had a bad condenser, spark plug wire or ignition coil in this situation. Lucky you had the doner machine!! Great video! Thanks so much for sharing!!!

Awesome Bre as love watching you take something that is what I call sick or dying and watching Dr Bre bringing it back to life and how excited she gets in doing so. Dr Bre to the emergency room please as another patient is awaiting your magical touch to bring it back to life. Brought a Stihl_MS250 when Idalia hit our shoreline and came inland to take out trees and limbs of my big old oaks that I love. But now after three hurricanes I've lost most all of my shade and just noticed yesterday (Saturday) that one out front I'm going to loose as I have discovered it's splitting down the middle as guess after three hurricanes its done it best to survive but I'm going to end up having to cut it down it looks like. But I can feel you about pulling that rope and no starting as I was upset that my Stihl MS250 wouldn't start.
But discovered they have a trick to cranking them full choke 1 2 3 and if no fire which if you get one go to half choke and pull 1 2 3 maybe 4 and we have ignition. But no where does Stihl mention this in manual as they should or fix the problem as seems in your video and others I found this works every time. Thanks Dr Bre as your number and I know your friend will be so grateful for you getting dad's saw to run once again. Dr Bre to the rescue once again as love watching you videos and thanks again for all you do and things you recommend buying which I also have done and been able to keep my MS250 running at top notch performance because of you.
Now you just need to see about making a video for Milwaukee's battery chainsaw and their major issue with chain bar oil just being a mess as its a pain and waste a lot of oil as its always leaking no matter what you do as just a major design flaw to me that they really need to address and fix. Thanks again Bre for all you do and are doing for us regular guys who still like working on things ourselves. For seem more and more they are making things that either we can't work on and end up trashing or you have to take it back to a dealer to get it repaired. Just as JD is doing with their tractors that the farmers are not able to work on their own tractors or even now I'm hearing not able to get the parts to do so as its locked to which only a dealer can do the work or get the parts to fix it.
So not right as why can't it be like it used to be and we have awesome people like Bre that can do the work or help the consumer fix it themselves as it always should be for it should be free enterprise for everyone and not locked for the profits of those who only want to fatten their wallets even more making it a struggle for farmer and regular guys that made them who they are as with out these people they probably wouldn't even be around and may not if it keeps going this way. Yet we all suffer for it impacts not just the farmer but the whole industry of farming all the way to consumers table. So sad but again thank Bre for all you do and helping us ole timers who still like to tinker and work on our own things.
Your super awesome Bre and big Kudos to you for being that beautiful person you are inside and out to be that one to help the little guy to which I pray your richly blessed in many ways of which you'll never dream and will always be for many years to come.

I have a couple of these and some 026's. Re-seal the crank case halves, that's where they leak. The old sealant fails with age. It will run and cut well, but you'll have idling unsteady issues you can't adjust out. Resealed all of mine. They run, cut and idle like brand new.

Great job.....HI form New-Brunswick Canada. I just found an old Stihl 036 and want to do a rebuild on it. I love those old machines. No problem changing to electronics instead of points, there's a reason they don't have them anymore. But for the people that like original, just clean them and adjust them, if it sparks check the timing is right, in this case it probably just didn't spark at the right time, when the piston is all the way up, explains the pop but no start, and a bad condenser will only allow a weak spark or none at all, they wear out, might as well just change it while everything is right there in the open.
