    I was US Army in the 70's. I was issued at my duty station an H&R M16A1. We had only 20rd mags in our armory. I kept a few, but that are long gone.

    Carried a few m16a1 my first three plus years in the army. Basic, ait, and my first 2 years in the 25th I.D., until we got our m16a2s around 1989. My first ar15s where a Jager ap74 in .22 got as a gift in the mid 80s then 2 colt sp1 and shorter 2 carbines. These types of firearms are just fun to shoot. And the look of the a1 is just classic and looks cool. I did a a1 build in the early 90s . I used a barell that was marked fn I picked up for 125.00 back then. I'm glad to see there's alot of interest in the retro/clone firearms.

    I got the 1:7 twist grey non-blem. Took it out today to zero. I forgot how much of a pain it was to adjust the sights, but a round or nail works. Weapon shoots smooth, triggers fine. Glad I got it.
    Hope you enjoy yours!

    • @CountArtha
      @CountArtha ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Best thing about the A1-style sights is that you only need to adjust them once.

    • @dtnetlurker
      @dtnetlurker 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh yeah. That's one thing that is great about the old A1 sights. You can drop the rifle and drag it through the swamp in the muck and mire playing war games and they'll never go out of adjustment. They are so simple that there is very little to screw up.
      Grey is how to go if you want it truly authentic as the originals were first issued new. Over time it will take on a bit darker gun metal patina like the real rifles have.
      However the black ones can still be considered authentic as they would have looked after their first arsenal rebuild. Most were reparked black nearly half a dozen times over the years. Some got reparked in just a year or two due to heavy use in combat. The boys were very rough on them as many soldiers didn't think much of them at first and during the first year they didn't even get cleaning kits.

    Basic training, Fort Knox 1970. 1st day on the range, my h&r m16a1 broke. I don't mean jammed i mean quit altogether. It had to be repaired by an armorer before i could continue. Always mistrusted m16s thereafter . In Nam i used m14a1e2, m1 carbine, or my favorite m3a1 grease gun. Never an m16a1.

    Great to see that they are into the thousands with the serial numbers on the A1 receivers. I am serial #40, got in on the first batch. ;-) Did the same thing as you- ordered the same grade furniture from US collectors ordinance, and man does it take the gun to the next level. A little spendy, but worth it, and like you i wanted the lower grade they sell on purpose, really gives it that worn in look. Amazing how even though it is a 20” barrel it is still so lightweight with the pencil barrels! Edit to add- I know they are a little expensive, but the H&R waffle mags really do complete the look, and it is cool that they have them stamped H&R on the bottom. . .

    • @THEPAGUNGUY
      @THEPAGUNGUY  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea I was hoping when I ordered this it was still part of the first batch but I guess not. I thought about getting a Waffle mag but there really not correct. The waffle mags went out w the original colt 601 but still they look cool. I ordered some more colt 20 rounders. I’m hoping H&R comes out w a reg 20 rounder and I’ll buy some of those as well.

    Serial number didn't come up on Colt's site, so I called em.
    After some diggin, they said mine was last listed in the 2002 catalog, but didn't know exact production date.
    Their final answer was late 90s/early 2000s.
    Finally put (3) 30rd steel mags through it last month at 50 yards.

In Coast Guard training, the A2’s and or A4’s were what we used, i wanted it back. It was MSRP’d for 999.99 but they had a big new year sale and i ended up getting the M16A4 for $600.

      I must have been a smidge shell shocked by Drill Sergeants-YES! I barely remembered the features of my basic training rifle. I do remember it was light, wobbled, and had a tapered front post. No much else. I remember DI kicking my elbows at practice range which pissed me off. I was thinking to myself “..c’mon Drill Sgt. This is the one thing I CAN do without much help” 😂

  • @dtnetlurker
    @dtnetlurker 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nice rifle. The handguards look to be the exact same as the Brownells. The holes are a bit too round and the top definitely too rounded over. I have a set of handguards that are absolutely perfect copies of originals. They look exactly like new old stock handguards. I can't for the life of me remember where I got them though.
    Hopefully the quality control is just a bit better, now that PSA owns Nodak Spud entirely. PSA has always prided itself on customer service and making sure only 100% quality is shipped out. Brownells would just buy a bunch of the uppers and lowers, have them built and have no quality checks for blems what so ever. I got one from Brownells that had a really bad finish. Some kind of strange stain or ring baked in. Still have that lower somewhere because they wanted the entire rifle sent back but had no more in stock to replace it. Like a bonehead I just sucked it up and kept it. I probably should have sent it back but I figured you can never have too many extra AR parts. I thought about getting it reparked and selling it. I probably have enough parts laying around to have an extra rifle built.
    These new H&R rifles look ten times better with the proper markings and the classic H&R rollmark that was indeed on real M16 rifles. Yeah it's laser etched but it looks so much better than the old method. Colt tried roll marking their reissue rifle and almost every one of them ended up unevenly stamped. They look horrendous. Those and these new H&R rifles are the only ones with authentic company logos on the receiver.
    They are still very difficult to get but hopefully the retro rifles or at least the parts are kept available long term.

    **UPDATE**
    I traded a very rarely used Browning O/U shotgun for my copy of the H&R M16A1. I had a bayonet and attached a Magpul RSL sling. I have a Brownell's Retro 4x scope that is period correct to the A1.
    I would love to have one of these retros but I have hit the high water mark. I bought a Troy XM177E2 about two years ago and topped it off with the Brownells 4x scope that was kind of a standard back in the 60s in Vietnam.
    If the H & R been released before the XM177E2 I would have bought one.

They don't bother to learn the gun laws so they just refuse to ship to some states even though the parts are all completely legal for anyone to own. Nice. I've been debating getting one of these but 1g is a little high. I have a Colt SP1 from 1974 and it didn't cost much more than this replica - got it a few years ago for $1350, so I have mixed feelings on the value of this. If they were around $800 I might bite. It is really a PSA/Nodak replica, not a vintage/C&R firearm but the H&R connection is cool, especially since it is mostly clone correct.

      Because they’re cranking these out constantly, genius. They’re IN PRODUCTION rifles. The problem is that the furniture isn’t really the best quality. A quick switch for period accurate furniture would bring this rifle to the next level.

    Colors are off of the upper and lower. There is noway you are getting 1k for these rifles. Buy a colt a4 and swap the handguard. Will be cheaper and better

      Lol not even close the A4 is a totally different rifle. Colors are not that far off this is also a blem. Also I have a AR15A4

      @@THEPAGUNGUY very easy to see how off the colors are. Don't see the value at all. 🤷‍♂️ A4 is cheaper and better

      @@dutch0770 what colors should they be? Some people don’t they don’t understand or care about the small details that make a correct A1 correct and that’s fine. Windom makes a good A1 government for 800 bucks if that’s the case.

      @@THEPAGUNGUY the colors don't match is the point. Why pay more for something that is worse? Because of the look. That's fine if you like it and want to pay more. I like the look too. But multi colored rifles isn't a look I'm going for. You can find Colt A4s for 799/899. I have one for that price. There are lots of everything for everyone. I see no market for this rifle. In 6 montha they will be 800 and given away with a dagger. Haha

      @@dutch0770 I do agree that the price will come down with production at least in hoping for that. I also do think the retro phase is kinda going away so that’s fine w me if the price goes down. Keep in mind this is also a blem rifle. I paid 950 OTD for my colt A4

    All you need to do now is replace the birdcage for he three prong flash hider and it’ll be done, likened the one brandished by the FBI guy in the limo behind JFKs limo,!..

    • @THEPAGUNGUY
      @THEPAGUNGUY  ปีที่แล้ว

      The A1 bird cage is correct for a 1968/69 gun. The three prong went out with the XM16E1. I suspect some M16A1s may have had it in 1967. The H&R contract rifles were from 1968-1972 and they were only made with the A1 bird cage.

    No offense- struggled through this video. H& R is no longer and independent company ( it's like expecting Armalite ot be original Armalite!)
    If your buying this to be " original H&R" you wasted your money - you could have bought a PSA freedom 20" and slapped repro "furnitire" and saved your coin
    If it's just for retro look and reproduction value, then there's really nothing to. Complain about
