After I woke up from my nap I jacked up my truck, pulled off the front passenger tire and traced the cable of wires. Mine was good, no cracks, nothing. Then went to the engine bay and opened the connector for that mass of wiring, sprayed wire connector cleaner in it and zip tied it together. Problem solved, no more flashing OD light and it even shifts better. Thanks you saved an old man from a heart attack.
Wow, I just had my 95 f150 4x4 e4od rebuilt for the same thing..it was doing good until I ran thru some rain..had the same problem..gonna check my wiring harness, thanks man you are also !!!
Sorry for all your troubles in fixing the problem but Thankyou for posting this video because my 2001 od light just started to flash without any shifting problems and this gives me a place to start and hopefully fix the problem.
Thank you, I was going crazy because the transmission was just redone. I figured it was something electrical because it was still running fine and the oil didn’t smell burnt. It explains it well.
Thank you thank you took mine to the damn transmission shop after being told over and over it needs to be replaced took it to a different shop and told them what I saw on TH-cam and they checked it out walked out 2 days later with a 120.00 repair bill and not 2600.00 transmission. They said the transmission is in very good condition still. Thank you once again
Tom just bought a 2000 f 150 overdrive light on the shifting lever is flashing and the truck starves to take off up hills and seems like its not shifting in or out of gear properly or at all. I will check this out and A BIG THANK YOU FOR SHARING. THERE'S A LOT OF CRAPPY PEOPLE AND MECHANICS OUT THERE. Sorry you had to go through all that, but you've probably saved a bunch of people a lot of headaches and money.

Don't stop trusting people because I would never do something like that to another person and I know that there's a lot more people like me out there that I guarantee you. Again thank you so much just know that you've at least helped one person but I'm sure you've helped so many more. Have a great rest of your day!!. Appreciation and respect sent from Cali!!.
Wow..my truck is doing exactly that...after I replaced all the solenoids and wires and sensor.....😮 Will check that out asap... Thank you man...for sharing your story❤
2004 F-150 5.4L triton with only 67K miles. Today the O/D started flashing and felt the truck sluggish. I hope its an easy fix... Thanks Tom I will definitely check the wiring first.
My overdrive light has been flashing with in the past few days & it's getting were it dosent want to shift, so this video was very helpful. Thank you .
Thank you for your contribution to all who are having this same issue. I wish you well sir. I feel bad that you spent to much to find out it was something so simple. I’ll be tracing wires this weekend. Do take care.
Rebuilt my motor last year now I'm having this problem and everything I researched led to shift solenoids so I replaced them and still have a issue. Had it to ford yesterday and they couldn't get a reading so said they needed $400 to tear it apart and analyze it. He told me that he factory reset it to a learn mode. I didn't make it a 1/4 mile away and got a trans fault code so I started to research that and found your video. I'm gonna dig into this and check it out. Thanks much for sharing this Tom much appreciated.
I understand the frustration because I have been down that road too. I was lucky because my step-father told me a long time ago to not trust what the dealership repair tells you. They have no clue and it will be at your expense. I too have found easy electrical fixes that cost less than a $1. I discovered the OD light recently and thanks to youtube and especially your clip, I'm going to avoid the hassle of wondering why the OD light starts flashing. I ordered the part and hope it's the problem. It's a Ford Ranger 2010 with 101000 miles 4 cyl. It runs great only if I drive at 70mph versus 80mph. My daughter and I drove it from Florida to Maryland when we noticed the light in Georgia. We kept it at 70mph and made it all the way to Maryland without the OD light coming on. I know if I took it in to Ford, they'd tell me I need a new transmission. Ridiculous but reality is you can't trust the auto shop, you need people like you willing to voice the mistakes and robbery caused by the auto shop. May God bless you for your honesty and voice!
I was in the same boat but man Thank you for your video I had P0705 code I found orange/yellow wire to the safety neutral switch and 2 other had little bare spots spliced 1 and put electrical tape on the other also rezip tied the harness up and away from the exhaust No codes and truck shifts smoothly Thank you sir
Hey Tom, thanks for info on blinking OD light. I'm fixing to look at mine. Now I'll share sumn with you. My trans went out 01 f150 5.4. I never worked on a transmission except maybe replacing one. This guy on you tube "Transmission Bench" takes you step by step once your transmission is out of the vehicle. I rebuilt mine for about $425.00 If u ever need trans work again and want to save $1500 or so, that you tube channel will walk you thru it. Never order parts until you have inspected the inside. Find out what happen and correct it. I typed all that out to show my appreciation of this video and if ever need be, you wont need trans shop a next time. Merry Christmas
Whoa... I have a 1998 F150 and it seems as if the transmission suddenly gave out. It's automatic shifting. It will only drive in what it seems 1st gear and then feels like it drops to neutral. This happened *suddenly*. Had no issues in months. I also noticed that it wouldn't reverse anymore. Parking it in front of my home was something else, lol... Anyway, it's been sitting out there for about 2 months now. This entire time I'm thinking the tranny needs to be replaced, but I don't have the money for it. Well, now I remembered the OD light was blinking... I called my wife a little while ago and she confirmed it for me (I'm currently at work). You gave me some hope, sir. I really hope I can get my truck back and running...
I love your video! I own a 2004 F350 6.0 that I had that problem and others with. My overdrive button is not working right now. Probably a bad wire. watching your video made me feel like I was watching Tim Allen doing a video on Last Man Standing! You're awesome
Thank you so much for the pointer! I have a 2003 f150 and I took your advice and it fixed the problem with the melted harness exactly in the same spot you talked about.
Just replaced my trany and now this blinking was ready to cuss my mechanic.... But where do I find a diagram cuz I know it also runs in to the steering column
Latos Tree Service I know that the wire harness runs between the engine and the firewall, and the heat causes the wire insulation to melt and short out. Also, I am told that the wire in the steering column also can wear, and short out. I believe that most transmission problems are caused by wiring problems and not tranny mechanisms.
Galaxy I’m no mechanic or expert, but my experience tells me that it the flashing OD light only flashes when the engine is having to downshift to get the power to climb the hill, there may be a problem. However, if the transmission seems to be running correctly, it is probably the connection inside the steering column. You are describing the exact conditions I had with my Ford Windstar minivan. I ran great u til I took it to the Ford Dealer to check it out. The. Someone apparently took a screwdriver and punched out a space in the pan gasket, which caused the trans fluid to blow out HAD to replace the transmission. Btw, after the tranny was fixed, the OD light co tinted to flash when I pushed the engine. Then the shop discovered the wiring in the steering co s the issue. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the heads up. My old 2006 4x4 is just a farm truck now, but it developed this blinking/shifting problem also. My problem might be related to mice chewing on stuff since the truck hasn't been driven much the last 3 years. Got under it and washed everything down. I will be checking it out tomorrow when it dries.
Sorry you went through all that crap with spending. money. I have a 98 ford ranger. OD flashing. One guy told me transmission issues. Thanks to you I will look at the location of that harness. Thank you for shedding some light on this sucky problem
Thank you so much for posting this. So angry on your behalf ! This is EXACTLY what’s going on with my truck. We found some hanging wires a couple years ago. We spliced them together and it stopped for a couple years . No going on again flashing OD driving rough. We are so grateful you posted it. Those THIEVES ! The places you took it to aren’t just thieves, they are incompetent . You’d think they would of quietly fixed it with the new transmission Good Gosh!
Thank you very much, after what you've been through you didn't have to make this video but you still did and thank you very very much there are more people like you in this world I know I'd be a lot happier having the same problem with my truck and I feel much better already thank you again

Own a 96 Ford Explorer V8 thanks for the tip. Recently had this problem & will deal with it on an electrical issue basis only thanks to you. Great vehicle
man I love your video. my 2005 Ford Trans light just came on this morning after I got gas. so im going to check out the wires because I don't want to spend a bunch of money when I know my transmission is fine. thanks for the video!
Thankyou! I just rebuilt the transmission (for another issue) but now have this new problem. Figured it was electrical but can't figure it out. This now gave me a direction to go. Appreciate it!
Dude I felt your pain, ive been there so many times. Seems like one can make this a legal issue and get some of that hard earned money back, i don't know. I would look into it. My 04 F150 just started showing me "TRANS FAULT" with O/D OFF flashing but the truck runs fine ! I don't feel anything wrong. Thank you so much for your video. Its rare to find an honest mechanic.
Honesty does not make money on some jobs. We are on that era where a “mechanic” rather slap on a new part than find what is the root of the problem. So if there’s an honest mechanic, hang on to them and pay him/her more than fair... Thank you for sharing this video!
Thanks Tom. I’ve got an 07 f150 with 145xxx on her and just started having this same problem. I assumed my trans was going bad and was really upset. Hopefully this wiring harness is all that’s bad. I’m gettin into it now and feel a lot better. Thanks dude!
Bit late on this one - but I'm having issues with my '96 F150. Transmission was rebuilt by the previous owner, light is still on. You ever figure it out for your neighbor?
Hi Thomas thank you so very much for posting this because I was experiencing the same exact problem and four different mechanics tell me that I needed to put in a new transmission, your video helped me out in such a big way thank you so very much and you also helped me start my New Years off in a good way. Once again thank you!!
Yes it was and I’m all good now, my truck runs so much better than before. There were three wires that got burned and one was for a sensor and the other two was the transmission, transmit and receive and thats why it was slipping the way it was, that’s what the mechanic told me, Thank you again for posting this video. Cost me $65 to repair. So sorry it cost you so much to figure out what was really causing it. Thank you, I really appreciate you!!
@@Rackerintraining I’m sorry I can remember which wires they were, I just spliced the wires that got burnt and it’s called the wire harness, the one that came from the computer that runs right over the exhaust manifold like Thomas said in the video
Thank you Tom you’ve been a big help. I will check my wiring on my 2003 5.4 F250 I have same problem with the overdrive light flashing it also shows a check engine light with torque converter and shift solenoid A and B circuit problem.
Mine was doing the same thing I was fixing to take it to the shop I wiggled them wires that you said around and it quit doing it I’m so thankful that I watched your video thank you
Currently getting my 03 F-150 xlt super crew transmission relooked at just got it rebuilt at a professional shop and 1 day later o/d flashing and jerking and bucking into 3rd gear. I’ll most definitely point this out it when I go to pickup my truck tomorrow
Thank you!! I have P0705 and P0702 code and OD light blinking and I could've looked into it but I gave up and came to the mechanic but atleast I know what it is now so no bullshit from the mechanic
This video was actually first recorded in 2017 on Facebook. The 2002 Ford F-150 with 267,000 miles actually runs better today than it did when I bought it brand new.
Sorry to hear of your experience. I have an 02 F150. You are so right when you say that we have to be so careful where we take our vehicles for repair. Of course we have to watch for dishonesty but the second thing is the high level of incompetency and or laziness in doing their job. The levels of apathy out there are off the charts! Thank you Sir for sharing!
WOW , i think you just saved me with my 2009 F150.. Autozone error machine today said Right front wheel speed sensor input signal fault.. I guess i can goto a bodyshop and tell them thats all i need.. My overdrive been starts flashing every time i get on highway
@@pokerlife123 my experience is that it is usually a wiring issue, designed to force you back to the dealership. Wiring harness or bare wiring in the steering column. That is usually where the problem is found. Melted shielding on wiring harness

Thank you so much Mr.Tom, I am experiencing the same problem and people kept telling me it's the transmission, but I dont believe them and knew it was something else.
Sorry to hear man. Crooked mechanics. With Ford it's rarely the transmission. Typically electrical. I wish this video had more views and helped more people. Anyway, thanks.

Xmas eve od light starts flashing ,I'VE BEEN UP AND DOWN U TUBE and this video makes the most sense know I'm on my 3rd f150 . I remember moving a ground wire off the rust when it was dead .The 3 times Ihave fixed wiring that will just shut everything down. Well its either a faulty wire or A $1500 tranny. No slipping then one day It doesn't drive, thank you sr for venting your frustrations I should have known as well after all.
Sorry that you had so much trouble with this issue. Thanks for posting! May I say respectfully say that you're first mistake was trusting ANY Trans or mechanic shop to begin with! Of course you know that NOW!
Brother I feel your pain! You are right shops just want money! Is hard to trust anyone . I’m having the same problem right now. Today I took my ford e350 to a shop and they told me it was the transmission, so of course i didn’t believe it because the van is running very good, so I’m going to do some research and follow your advice! Thx
We learned growing up to avoid the shops because of $$, and the scams. I do my own work as much as possible. EVERY time I've went to the shop (2 or 3 times in the last 20yrs, in 3 different states) I got overcharged and often an incomplete repair. Get some basic tools, watch a bunch of videos on your model and issue and tackle it up yourself. The worst is you'll still end up at a shop. The best is you've fixed it yourself, knowing it's fixed right, and saving $$.
I feel Tom's pain; my Windstar has been doing this for about a year and I still can't find the short. I too took it to various cerifir=ed mechanics, who all said I needed a new transmission. Only the poor mechanic on the bad side of town said it's not the transmission, it's an electrical short, probably a cut wire or wire making contact with another component. So back I go, looking for the shorted wire. If America is really to be great again, start telling the truth, instead of placing profits above people and taking them for a financial ride. Let's be fair, people.
On the Windstar with the 3 L V6. It can be the speed sensor on the back of the transmission. Extremely hard to get to. Typically when you’re sitting in traffic in the hot summer have your air conditioner blasting hot air on to the engine. Your transmission will go in limp mode. Transmission shops will say Oops you need to rebuild. Guess what a $40 speed sensor will get you back on the road. And I wonder how many people have actually got rebuilt transmissions or did they just get very expensive speed sensors.
@@philipchamp594y windstar just started doing it a week ago. it shifts perfectly. it starts blinking when i first start the engine but only need to drive a few feet and it stops blinking. ill change the sensor and see what happens. thanks
Thank you so much that gives me something else to look at I'm going through the same problem you went through transmission shops just want to Rebuild your transmission without even checking it

How did it go?
My 2003 just started blinking intermittently this evening, Fathersday . . . Thanks a bunch for the heads-up !
What was it? I seen another video on the speed sensor
@calebmcallister2723 , not sure it hasn't happened again.
Any luck having the same problem
Thank you Tom your a gentleman and a scholar. Your a class act and I appreciate you letting us know about this electrical problem .
Thanks Mr Tom for your info you took a lot of B's to fix y,our truck thanks again
Man I'm sorry to hear what you went through, I've known a lot of people who have gotten ripped off or taken advantage of. Thank you for this video I hope it's a wire. I know this might not mean much but at least you're using what you've been through to help people like myself and I think that people like you sir go through these things because you can take whatever is thrown at you in life.
Wow..my truck is doing exactly that...after I replaced all the solenoids and wires and sensor.....😮
Will check that out asap...
Thank you man...for sharing your story❤
2004 F-150 5.4L triton with only 67K miles. Today the O/D started flashing and felt the truck sluggish. I hope its an easy fix... Thanks Tom I will definitely check the wiring first.
Omar Escamilla did that ever fix your problems mine doing the same thing
My overdrive light has been flashing with in the past few days & it's getting were it dosent want to shift, so this video was very helpful. Thank you .
Thank you for your contribution to all who are having this same issue. I wish you well sir. I feel bad that you spent to much to find out it was something so simple. I’ll be tracing wires this weekend. Do take care.
now it's my turn
Thank you for this video, you just saved me a lot of headache and expenses
Rebuilt my motor last year now I'm having this problem and everything I researched led to shift solenoids so I replaced them and still have a issue.
Had it to ford yesterday and they couldn't get a reading so said they needed $400 to tear it apart and analyze it.
He told me that he factory reset it to a learn mode.
I didn't make it a 1/4 mile away and got a trans fault code so I started to research that and found your video.
I'm gonna dig into this and check it out.
Thanks much for sharing this Tom much appreciated.
Ever figured it out ?
I just traded for an 04 with the light flashing, I appreciate you posting this, may save me a ton. Thank you and I'm sorry you went through all that.
How did this work out for you? Did you find an electrical problem?
I was in the same boat but man
Thank you for your video
I had P0705 code
I found orange/yellow wire to the safety neutral switch and 2 other had little bare spots spliced 1 and put electrical tape on the other also rezip tied the harness up and away from the exhaust
No codes and truck shifts smoothly
Thank you sir
Thank you!
Mr Bryant, what a helpful video. im gonna look into the prob as electrical. keep up the good work. 1995 ford f150 400K miles woot woot!
I have hope now to lol im praying
I love your video! I own a 2004 F350 6.0 that I had that problem and others with. My overdrive button is not working right now. Probably a bad wire. watching your video made me feel like I was watching Tim Allen doing a video on Last Man Standing! You're awesome
Thank you so much for the pointer! I have a 2003 f150 and I took your advice and it fixed the problem with the melted harness exactly in the same spot you talked about.
Where did u find the melted wire
I decided to pull the harness completely out and inspect each wire. Found another wire that was bare. No more problems now.
What were the wire colors? My 03 just started doing this today. I've over 285k on that transmission. Thank you for the heads up on the harness.
Just wanted to say thanks for the information and sorry you had to go through that
Thanks for the heads up.
Did you find the problem? I have a 98 mazda with the same problem.
That’s exactly what’s going on with my 01 lightning....just about to drop $4500 on a bulletproof transmission upgrade....THANK YOU SO MUCH
Thank you so much for posting this.
My 2000 F150 triton 4.6L OD just started flashing yesterday and am happy I came across this video. Am just going to check the wires out. Thanks man
Hello , did you found the problem ?
Daniel Andrade yeah all I did was look through the wires and suddenly it stopped but the gear later break down.
Thank you very much, after what you've been through you didn't have to make this video but you still did and thank you very very much there are more people like you in this world I know I'd be a lot happier having the same problem with my truck and I feel much better already thank you again
Thank you so very much for making this video and helping me out because I am having the same problem and I am getting ready and feel confident that your video is going to help me bless you for taking your time to save others money
Thank you Thomas, im so sorry you were ripped off. Appreciate you posting this video to help others out. Ill be checking every wire on my truck.
I want this guy a neighbor God bless this man 🙏👍
Own a 96 Ford Explorer V8 thanks for the tip.
I’m a female and my f150 the o/d came on I’ll check the wire, thank you very much for your video it helps a lot.
Man thanks fix my truck helped me a lot!
And?
Thank you Tom. My neighbor's F150 has the same symptoms so I will take a gander at it and hopefully this will fix the OD light.
Bit late on this one - but I'm having issues with my '96 F150. Transmission was rebuilt by the previous owner, light is still on. You ever figure it out for your neighbor?
I hear your frustration. I’m having that od light flashing now and I’m glad I ran into your video thank you
Hi Thomas thank you so very much for posting this because I was experiencing the same exact problem and four different mechanics tell me that I needed to put in a new transmission, your video helped me out in such a big way thank you so very much and you also helped me start my New Years off in a good way.
@@surgikal77 f
@@surgikal77 Do you remember the 3 wires that got burnt. What was that part or bundle called? Dealing with a similar issue and trying to diagnose.
@@Rackerintraining I’m sorry I can remember which wires they were, I just spliced the wires that got burnt and it’s called the wire harness, the one that came from the computer that runs right over the exhaust manifold like Thomas said in the video
Thanks So Much... this video literally fell out the sky just when I decided to just give up. Thanks Again.
Thanks Tom your a good man there’s still a few good people out there !
Nice video very help full and you right don’t trust any mechanic just doit yourself. Thanks for the video
Thank you for your advice, I have the same issues with the flashing light.
Hello my truck has overdrive light is flashing to could you tell me what it was
Thank you from Anaheim California. I just got that stupid light od. Thanks ill look it up
I feel for you.the struggle is real. This is happening to me now on my 1999 f-150 4x4 xlt thanks for the heads up.
Hi I have a 2002 ford explorer sport trac new rebuilt transmission. Same problem od/flashing going try this.
@@pokerlife123 my 2002 4.6 f150 has 285k miles. Rebuilt engine. Runs better today than the day I built it brand new. I just wish it looked better. But, oh well, it’s paid for!
This video is a life saver.... i wish.. may professional mechanics see this video....
I’m sorry to hear that, but I’m glad you figured it out. I appreciate you sharing your story to the masses. I’m experiencing the same issue with my Toyota celica.
The professionals failed your not an idiot thanks for the information.
Thanks so much 💯
he funny
Hey, tom..I feel your pain.. my overdrive light is flashing just like the one on my f 150...anyway, I feel more like I do right now than I did a while ago....good video...thanks
Yup most dealerships make their money off of repairs not selling the vehicles
Sorry for your pain and thank you for sharing. I am rebuilding my own trans as I cant afford a shop. lots to learn.
Thanks for the help my pick up truck had the same issue you save me alot of time and headaches, because I was going crazy in my pickup truck trying to figure out what was happening with the transmission thanks for the video
glad i do my research first, saved me a few hours of digging through manuals
Xmas eve od light starts flashing ,I'VE BEEN UP AND DOWN U TUBE and this video makes the most sense know I'm on my 3rd f150 . I remember moving a ground wire off the rust when it was dead .The 3 times Ihave fixed wiring that will just shut everything down. Well its either a faulty wire or A $1500 tranny. No slipping then one day It doesn't drive, thank you sr for venting your frustrations I should have known as well after all.
Thanks for this video. My 2003 mustang gt OD sensor goes off and on all the time. No one seems to know why. Now I do thanks to you.👍
Sorry that you had so much trouble with this issue. Thanks for posting! May I say respectfully say that you're first mistake was trusting ANY Trans or mechanic shop to begin with! Of course you know that NOW!
Thanks Tom this is where I was with my Ford I was ready to set it a fire!!! Your video helped me
Thank you you just saved me so much money and headaches
@@philipchamp594y windstar just started doing it a week ago. it shifts perfectly. it starts blinking when i first start the engine but only need to drive a few feet and it stops blinking. ill change the sensor and see what happens. thanks
My wind star just started to today same as you turns. Of when I drive a bit and was driving fine up untill this
Thank you so much that gives me something else to look at I'm going through the same problem you went through transmission shops just want to Rebuild your transmission without even checking it
You are a hero by sharing this God bless you
Thank you so much for your video!! As a happy single female I truly needed this info!! This is exactly what my Ford Explorer is doing.... Now at least I will get another opinion if they automatically say it's the transmission!!
Hey welcome to my world… ain’t it crazy when the guys tell you everything super expensive…. Uugghh pisses me off … but then I find it…. It’s something super simple… Thank you for that… sucks don’t it….
Very frustrating… I still do allot of my own work for just that reason… Thank kindly for sharing.. really appreciate the fact that you did… Hope it’s smooth sailing for you now… All my best T
I want to say Thank You so much......i was just getting ready to take mine in to be rebuilt....i dont have to now....You saved me a ton of money
this video helped me... i used it to fix my 2002 ford f150...
So frustrating that you can't know who to trust anymore!
This is why everyone should have a good, trustworthy mechanic on speed dial!!!
I've been dealing with the same problem in my 98 GT, but only comes on randomly. Also when I turn hard right I hear a grind. Thanks, I now know what to look for first. Great video. Thinking I'm rubbing wires now🧐
Thank u. For the info. My truck just started flashing overdrive light on.
My 08 been sitting for a month for same problem will check it in morning thanks 👍
You are God sent Mr Bryant thank you. I wish every one was as homest as you.
Thank you sir. My light came up yesterday. I flashed it today, light still on and tomorrow I was going to take it in. I'll check my wires first.
Thank You. Greed seems to win over honesty.
