I have a 2015 79 series single cab gxl. Bought it brand new. Have got a 4 inch long arm coil conversion, 315’s bullbar/siderails, 2m tray, 1600L canopy. Front mount, red wheel gturbo. Also only just hit 80,000. I wont be buying another car again. It goes everywhere and anywhere. You got a subscriber from me. Not because we both like cruisers but how your honest review with everything is with your videos. I feel like most channels these days have lost that. Good luck with the channel mate 👍🏻
What a legend! Thanks mate. I really feel like these vehicles can grow with us. If I want to go a bit crazy with it, I can. But for now, it’s a very capable stock vehicle that I can tinker with. It’s a great time 👍
i feel like this review is a great testimony to why the gxl 79 is well worth the money, whilst it’s not going to change the fact the car is outdated by todays standards, it would include a few features that make the car feel a little more usable when daily driving. excited to see the comparison video when it releases!
Thanks for the comment mate! Absolutely, and I’ll be mentioning what it’ll cost to add things like power windows in the aftermarket to a workmate as there are some people that might want that. I’ll be filming that video in the next few days 👍
People buy it BECAUSE it is outdated. I don't want a modern car with everything in a screen, and cars will only get worse. Software defined vehicle will make them an advertising and subscription platform that you don't own, the manufacturer has control over what your car displays. I DON'T want that!
Pulling badly to the left is pretty standard; I had the same issue in all my (4) LC70 in the last 10 years but the wheels alignment usually is able to solve it. Not for my LC79 2021 with a bad rear toe; I asked Toyota to recheck the rear axle, I tried different wheels but no way, the car pulled on the left. About the parking brake, the LC 79 is an off road car with an huge load capability and the brakes could get really hot and sometimes the classic four clicks for the handbrake might not guarantee enough tolerance. That's why the factory sets 7 clicks for the HB. Lot of noise, that's why you don't want upgrade the audio system. Armrest is a must, in the doors as well. Airco is great if you don't add any sort of air filter ..11:26 the balls 15:43 totally agree, I got my 2022 one month ago and I didn't order the new model so far. 18:51 the purpose of this car is to work offroad and safely bring you back home.
All great points and good to hear that it’s not just my vehicle with this issue. I have heard it from a few owners now that the alignment is hit or miss on these 👍
I done the same thing as you traded my 2020 Hilux SR5 for the 2024 V8 Land Cruiser, the first week i was like what have i done ? Now two weeks on I can’t believe how good the Cruiser is, love it!!
I know it's only early days. An update in 12 months would be awesome, but it felt like i was looking in the mirror watching this. My first 4wd was an 08 n70 hilux. I loved it but soon learnt that ifs was really annoying off road, every trip or 2 id split my cv boots and need to have them replaced and that was just from driving on the beach. About 2 or 3 years ago i bought a 98 gu patrol. I love it but it is very easy to be tempted by a 300 series for example. I think as long as you focus on the benefits of a more basic car like your 79 or my patrol has to offer then you will be happy with your decision. The wind noise can get annoying so i can 100% relate with you there 😂
Absolutely, ifs is not great for off-road but is superior everywhere else. Remember, a lot of people don’t take their 4wd’s off-road so I can see why the manufacturers shifted to the ifs. A 200 or 300 was on my list but went with a 79 for that exact reason of basic and tough. Perhaps Ill call you in your GU and we can shout at each other over our wind noise 😆
Yeah I can definitely see why the market has shifted to ifs. It's sad that the only solid axle options we have are the 70 series, jeep (which I wouldn't risk taking remote) or a jimny which is too small to go touring. It makes the 70 series the easy and only choice Ahaha can you imagine! On that note, if you install a good microphone to pair with your head unit for your hands free calls, assuming you can do that on a 70 series, that might be a good video people (myself included) might find helpful I don't know if you're part of some of the new car fb groups, I am just to see what I'm missing out on and if I should jump ship, but a lot of the time all different makes and models, Toyota included, the technology in them failing or throwing a code can ruin your trip. I've heard of people having to tow their car to a dealership just so they can clear the code which then takes the car out of limp mode. That honestly scares me off a new car. I think the 70 series is the only exception I'm glad you're happy with it mate, it should serve you well for many years
Good to see you are positive about your vehicle Mark,I've just recently got mine which is a single cab but I can't fault mine at all , good onya mate hope you continue to enjoy it,I no I am
Great video, just traded my 2021 Hilux for one of the few remaining 2023 LC76 available in South Africa. So happy with my purchase can't wait to test it on my trip to Botswana next year. I wish I got your fuel consumption, but agree with all your feedback.
Hi, i think what really lets me down is the track width. The reason for the suspension creaking and groaning is the lateral forces as the rear tries to follow the front. The clutch issue has occured from about 2019 on. Ive got everything in the hilux that the 70 now has eg dash info, safety suite, steering wheel. What we need on cattle stations is about where we were in 2006. Simple, rugged, excellent payload life front axle. I think toyota are taking the mickey out of us, trying to make the 70 all things to all men and therefore nowhere. Same for the 300. Its a tribute and we get less quality engineering and more “bling”.
I’m glad to hear that you like the standard seats, etc as I have just ordered one of the very last new Troopys available in New Zealand and it’s due next month. For 2024 model year there’s no more available Troop Carriers. Also the LT V8 LC 78 in NZ come with the manual winding windows (superior Electric I feel) and come standard with front and rear differential locks.
That sounds like a great spec! Congrats on the purchase. I hope you get some ideas from the videos. Looking forward to your thoughts on future videos 👍
@@NorthOz yes thank you, I have also ordered the Toyota genuine Bullbar, winch, towbar and have plans for a extremely light basic rear camping set up to sleep inside the back.
@@imnotusingmyrealname4566 it’s part of the worlds legislating system that forced change on Toyota to change the design. Some things are good when they force changes, but some things are really bad. What is very interesting to me is that the African spec 2024 70 Series has more modern sideview mirrors than the Australian spec. They have a modern plastic shell meanwhile the Australian spec has the same sheet metal arm and mirror as the previous one. I think they fit the car better as they're more old-school.
Honest review I brought the 3rd last one in the country white work mate, but with the factory diff locks, July 23 build, and I'm in love for all the same reasons keep the videos coming 👍
I’ve been trying to work out why your LC79 looks so strange for weeks now, and it finally dawned on me; just about EVERY LC79 I see has had the chassis stretch to move the rear axle rearwards. Is that one of the things you are considering on doing down the line?
The chassis stretch is a common mod for sure! I may consider it down the track but there are other modifications to do first to make it more capable. I like the dimensions of the stock dual cab too I will have to think about it for sure
I have a dual cab V6 Petrol. I invested on sound proofing, also thicker door rubbers. Its now muxh better. The only thing I may do finally us a taller 5th and 2nd gear. I've fitted 4 new speakers and deleted the old tiny ones. The list never ends but with each addition, comes a leap in user-friendness.
Great review Mark, thanks. Just to add to the whole hand brake thing - when I first got my 76 series I parked facing downhill - but in Reverse gear. As I was about to walk away, I noticed it was very slowly inching forward. I later found out that the gear you leave it in should match the roll direction. ie: facing downhill should be left in 1st gear, and facing up hill should be left in Reverse gear. Apparently the engine compression is greatest in the direction of the gear. So in my case it was rolling forward because there was not enough compression from Reverse gear. Maybe something you're aware of already, but thought I'd mention in case!
Great idea! I always leave it in first but like you said, I always notice it rolling back a bit when parked up. I’ll try reverse. Thanks for the heads up and I’ll include that in a tips and tricks video in the future 👍 Thank you for your kind words too
Hi mate, I did. It has gotten better though. First gear is very short and I find myself using 2nd and slipping the clutch a bit instead of taking off in first
Your seatbelt beeps mine does on my 2023 troopy. Check your paint for micro rust spots , I found few spots on mine , paint is really thin not enough on edges of hinges and heaps of other spot I’m trying to do a warranty. Same paint issues in the gxl . I feel like the quality isn’t there in the paint compare to earlier models.
Hey mate. You're talking me into one 😂. One cheap mod I'd suggest is terrain tamer's steel gasket for the air box. It stopped my brothers troopy getting dust past the filter. Cheap effective mod
@@NorthOz glad to hear it mate. I'm thinking about the new auto down the track for a long term purchase. Google " terrain tamer air box gasket" you'll see what I mean. Least invasive mod for cars under warranty. Just take it out before service by unclipped the air box.
Wow finally we saw a reviewer that is not a seller for after market product! Those TH-camr are makes me feel stock 70 series is hard rock riding extremely uncomfortable seats very enduring to drive
Thank you for the kind words. I don’t see why these trucks get hated on. I’m loving it more and more everyday too! Just a few choice mods and they are very functional and comfortable 👍
Haha my problem is I love them all but I can only hang onto 1 at a time. I’m planning on hanging onto this one longer 😂 A troopy sounds good but not sure if I could stomach the 4 cylinder after being spoilt by a v8 now
Change the snorkel head and put some window shields on the doors and you’ll lose a lot of the wind noise. Also welcome to landcruiser handbrakes. You’ll constantly be adjusting them. Word of advice though, never ever rely on the handbrake alone. Ain’t worth the risk of a roll away.
Thanks for the tips and for the recommendation on SSV. I always park it 1st anyway so chances of a rollaway are lessened. I always give it a little test before I get out though. Not to be trusted 😂
Great video and I agree about if you love the vehicle keep it. I have a 2023 Diesel prado and love it. And it serves the purpose I need it for, as a result I have no intention of changing for the new Lc250, I just wouldn't get anything extra from buying the 250series
I have a 2023 GLX 79 love having the window down listening to the snorkle suck in air, Love the old school vibe and simplicity Not sure why modern uts identify as car It also has plenty of room bihind the back seat along side the tiny car jack ha ha ha
I did 👍 I sold it to a young apprentice. He loves it. I got it to a point where the main things were fixed and it was road worthy and decided to move it along. I didn’t have the budget to do anything crazy with it like a engine swap and the interest from the audience wasn’t there so I decided to sell it. I have a lot of great memories in the patrol though. It was definitely an experience
How was the audio quality in the rogue? ive got one coming in the next month or so and not to manny reviews on because of copy right. also what tint did you have on hilux? keep up the great vids, cheers!
Hi mate, I have the non JBL system and the audio was great! I’m sure the JBL would be even better. I had the darkest legal tint on it 👍 Congrats on the purchase! I loved my rogue
Hey mate great common sence video. Its a work truck, uncivilised, bit bumpy, raw. Its not a luxury vehicle with all the amenities and the kitchen sink. And I love that it isn't! Reminds me very much of my old 62 series Sahara and that old thing is still going strong after 37 years and nearly three quarter of a million km. I wonder if my 100 series gets there? 70 series, A vehicle made for a purpose no compromise, no bs. BTW that sixty series cost $ 52.000 in 1987 (think about that?!! Thats *36 years ago when a Commodore cost about 8 or 9 grand!!!).
Great insights and I appreciate the comment Paul. $52k would probably put it around what I paid for the 79 I suppose? I’m looking forward to racking up a lot of kms on this just like you did with your 62. I’m glad you get it as it does take a type of person to own and appreciate these vehicles. Those 100’s are bulletproof too!!
@@NorthOz the thing is commodores went up 5x the price in their time, to 40 grand or so, the Cruiser went up maybe 2.5 times the price, comparing it to the early 70 series. And it didn't have the extra bells and whistles, like V8, turbo good seats etc, ever sat for any length of time in a 75, painful! When you look at it like that the 79 is a bargain hey?
The DPF thing on your hilux sounds strange. I have a 2023 prado 150 series and when it does the dpf burn apart from the display showing the chart you would not know its running. The revs do not change and no extra air sounds or anything.
Great review. Ive had 4 v8 79, a 200, a 2006 factory turbo 70, a 1997 78 troopie, 60,80,100 blah blah. Best? 80 series turbo wagon and the 2006 turbo 70. 3 of my v8 70 series have had “issues” eg rear suspension groaning, noisy gearbox, clutch. I was toyota australias auctioneer and as youncan see by my profile pic i have a beaut fj45. I got out of the 300 (hated it. Stupid tailgate etc), sold the 79 and bought a hilux to see if I like the 2.8 and auto before i buy a new 70. Now im struggling to justify why I should. I doubt i will every buy another landcruiser. They are taking the mickey out of us. Time will tell. In the meantime inwill drive my fj45 to remind me of how it once was.
Can’t go wrong with the FJ45. Just to play devil’s advocate, do you think the reason why you are let down is because you come to expect more of the vehicles? As an example, groaning suspension and noisy gearboxes to me is what I expect from a truck like this but I could see how this would be a let down for others who were expecting more from a modern vehicle. At the end of the day, this is an old vehicle and it will behave like one. It’s certainly not for everyone. Thank you for your insights, I bet you would’ve seen some cool stuff as a Toyota auctioneer 👍
Hi Mark thanks for your video mate, subscriber from Sydney💪. Question- what did you mean by the intake only being raised but not sealed? And 2 piece? Maybe do a shorts video for us. Cheers
Thanks for subscribing! Sydney is a great place. The intake is sectional so it has 2 pieces being divided in the middle which has the potential to allow water in when crossing rivers. I absolutely will make some content on it to show you 👍
No thought for aircon in the back.. ya gota fork out for seat covers floor covers stereo system suspenshion& tyres just to get it bush friendly .be prepaired to be $broke lol
Haha I see your point. I finished the build and it luckily it didn’t send me broke. There is a smart way of modifying these. Seats don’t need covers because they are vinyl in the workmate. Tyres are a 33 inch AT and the sound system cost me $100 in speakers and the speaker pods didn’t cost much. AC in the back hasn’t been an issue for my passengers as they sit pretty close to the dash. Luckily the issues you raised aren’t the biggest issues 👍
Dude, I'm struggling to understand why you are counting diff locks and wheels as a negative when you picked the workmate over the gxl.. That's not a negative that's a choice you made.
Hi mate, thanks for the comment and for watching. After spending $90k on a 4wd, I’d say it’s a negative. They come standard in a GXL and in all 4wd hiluxes and Prado’s
@@NorthOz yep they are expensive, I'm waiting for my new gxl troopy and am gutted at the price but it is what it is. I'd suggest the negative is the price though not the options you chose not to take. Still enjoying your viids and review though. Keep em coming.
I had the 2.8 in my last 2 4wd’s. Great engines and would recommend them to 99% of people. I went with the V8 based off my experience with them and the job I need it to do
@@kromey111 only time will tell mate. I got the V8 as it was the last to own one. The auto transmission in 4 cylinder annoyed me too much with its second guessing. Thus, this is the only manual in the lineup now. The boost pushing through the 4 cylinder is very high whereas my v8 rarely gets above 5psi. Not an issue for most but I put big kms on my 4wd’s and the V8 will take it better over time. Something else no one talks about is the fuel economy. I don’t know what tests these reviewers are doing but my v8 outperforms the 4 cylinder every day of the week. I live near mountain ranges and I would be easily over 15-16L/100km on a mountain run. My v8 gets the same regardless if I’m on the highway, mountains, or driving to and from work. It’s a reliable 10.5L/100km all year round. These are some of my thoughts. I definitely need to make a video on it but will anyone listen with all of the big TH-cam channels saying otherwise? I think everyone is convinced the 4 cylinder is better and I think I might leave it at that. Or will I…
Knowing what I know now, the gxl is the path of least resistance and would suit 99% of people. However, for me I’m happy with the workmate. The vinyl is a major plus due to my daily activities and having a dog. Also, I love to tinker so adding all the extra bits is a lot of fun for me. In short, yes and no

Jesus Toyota.. my 93 GQ patrol has a large factory armrest and 2 factory centre console cup holders… it’s pretty embarrassing, especially for the price..

I still can’t believe that antique was only a few thousand dollars less then my next gen ranger raptor, Toyota don’t even bother using lube when they bend you over 😂😂
Land cruisers aren’t worth what you pay for them, I love em but they really aren’t a luxury car they are a basic one and should be priced accordingly, unfortunately your paying for the brand and reputation more so than the actual vehicle. Again love the 79 but damn id rather own my house 😂😂

Maybe something you're aware of already, but thought I'd mention in case!
Great idea! I always leave it in first but like you said, I always notice it rolling back a bit when parked up. I’ll try reverse. Thanks for the heads up and I’ll include that in a tips and tricks video in the future 👍 Thank you for your kind words too
Did you find it hard to select first gear when the vehicle was new ?
Hi mate, I did. It has gotten better though. First gear is very short and I find myself using 2nd and slipping the clutch a bit instead of taking off in first
Your seatbelt beeps mine does on my 2023 troopy. Check your paint for micro rust spots , I found few spots on mine , paint is really thin not enough on edges of hinges and heaps of other spot I’m trying to do a warranty. Same paint issues in the gxl . I feel like the quality isn’t there in the paint compare to earlier models.
Looking forward to your off-road review mark! Especially if you think lockers are worth it? Cheers
Thanks for the comment mate! I just did an afternoon of off-roading and river crossings so I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts 👍
I like your Analysis very clear and educative much love bro ❤❤❤❤
Thank you 🙏
@@NorthOz sure
I was surprise with the fuel consumption too, I keep it under 90 k/ hr and I got a tray and half canopy
I couldn’t believe it. I was expecting 15L/100km or more! Thanks for commenting and subscribing 👍
@@NorthOz as long as you keep the skinny tires it will be low, you will get 15 at the moment you put 35s on it ;-)
@@NorthOz i am the same shoes as you, brought it by suprise, when i saw they coming in, and got one with 2 month waiting. thanks pacific toyota.
Hey mate. You're talking me into one 😂.
One cheap mod I'd suggest is terrain tamer's steel gasket for the air box. It stopped my brothers troopy getting dust past the filter. Cheap effective mod
Haha I’m loving it heaps!! Thanks for the tip. I’m trying not to mess around too much with intakes due to warranty but I’ll definitely consider it 👍
@@NorthOz glad to hear it mate. I'm thinking about the new auto down the track for a long term purchase.
Google " terrain tamer air box gasket" you'll see what I mean. Least invasive mod for cars under warranty. Just take it out before service by unclipped the air box.
When did the recommended first oil change
6 month service intervals through Toyota. I’ll be doing it every 5000 kms though
The consul looks great
I think it turned out really nice!
Did you do the reverse camera? Which brand?
Hi mate, I just bought one from jaycar. It’s a wireless one. Hoping it fits up okay. I may do a video about it
How long did you have the hilux and how much did you lose when you sold it
Nearly a year, I lost $2k on it 👍
@@NorthOz that’s not a lot of deprecation really
Ohh I forgot to mention it’s a gxl and I also own a 75 series 1995 tray back since new my work horse , allways been a cruiser man .😅
How about fuel consumption?
It’s 10.5L/100km on average so far over 5000 kms
mate when you got the Hilux, you said you were going to hold it for 10 years... I can see you trading this for a 4-cylinder troop carrier :)
Haha my problem is I love them all but I can only hang onto 1 at a time. I’m planning on hanging onto this one longer 😂 A troopy sounds good but not sure if I could stomach the 4 cylinder after being spoilt by a v8 now
@@NorthOzthe 8 cylinder has no real world advantages compared to the 4 cylinder
Change the snorkel head and put some window shields on the doors and you’ll lose a lot of the wind noise. Also welcome to landcruiser handbrakes. You’ll constantly be adjusting them. Word of advice though, never ever rely on the handbrake alone. Ain’t worth the risk of a roll away.
Also SSV (street sound vision) have bulk audio upgrades for 70 series landcruisers. I’ve used them for my last 2 cruisers and they got quality gear
Thanks for the tips and for the recommendation on SSV. I always park it 1st anyway so chances of a rollaway are lessened. I always give it a little test before I get out though. Not to be trusted 😂
I have two wheel chocks for my single cab and they get used.
Great video and I agree about if you love the vehicle keep it. I have a 2023 Diesel prado and love it. And it serves the purpose I need it for, as a result I have no intention of changing for the new Lc250, I just wouldn't get anything extra from buying the 250series
Thanks mate! I completely agree. The 150 has everything the new 250 has except the useless tech. We won’t be trading our 150 either 👍
I have a 2023 GLX 79 love having the window down listening to the snorkle suck in air, Love the old school vibe and simplicity
Not sure why modern uts identify as car
It also has plenty of room bihind the back seat along side the tiny car jack ha ha ha
Me too mate! Love the induction sound 👍 Heaps of space for dual batteries and sub setups. It really is like Lego. That jack is tiny 😂
@@NorthOz ha ha true thats what i told the misses when she found out what i paid for it
I love all the bolt on kit and mods and raw grunt of the 4.5
Did you sell the patrol? Haven’t really been watching lately, was looking forward to more vids on it
I did 👍 I sold it to a young apprentice.
Did you sell the rouge mate?
I did. Like I said, it was opportunistic and couldn’t pass this up
Onwards and upwards 🍻
The DPF thing on your hilux sounds strange. I have a 2023 prado 150 series and when it does the dpf burn apart from the display showing the chart you would not know its running. The revs do not change and no extra air sounds or anything.
Interesting. Do you have a snorkel fitted? I wonder if it had something to do with the snorkel? Thanks for commenting and subscribing 👍
@NorthOz No snorkel, all standard as far that goes.
Can't believe the Workmate has cruise control. Or was that an aftermarket addition?
It was there from the factory. They introduced it to all models as standard towards the end of this model’s run
@@NorthOz Cheers. I haven't been through all of your videos. Have you done anything for track correction?
I absolutely will make some content on it to show you 👍
@@NorthOz thanks mate👍 yea I’m trying to picture it but can’t understand why they set it up like that and the reasoning and benefits. Cheers
Nice insights, Mate...
Thanks legend! I appreciate you watching 👍
He didn't pick the workmate that is what was available at the dealer
I still enjoy your content but was bummed you sold the rogue
Me too mate. If I could keep multiple cars I would but I can only have 1 new car at a time 😢
What happened to the patrol mate
Sold it to a young fella. I fixed the big problems and got it road worthied and running. Sold it a young apprentice up here. He loves it 👍
Its about the feeling and trust indeed!, But...... I will opt for the new auto. Thanks!
Hi mate! I’d love to hear your thoughts on purchasing the 4 cylinder and auto combo over the v8 👍
Love the 79s i would own 1 any day 🤙
Couldn’t agree more 🤙
And my quarters glass on both sides leaks 2023 troopy.
10/10 review.
Thanks legend 👍
I drive these everyday at work. Take an absolute beating yet still show up everyday and take the abuse haha!
Haha they are built tough as that’s for sure. If it can withstand workers flogging it, then it must be decent 😂
being thrashed underground constantly for 12hrs a day then yep, can handle most stuff 😂@@NorthOz
Mate you def should have bought the 2.8 looking at comparison videos
I had the 2.8 in my last 2 4wd’s. Great engines and would recommend them to 99% of people. I went with the V8 based off my experience with them and the job I need it to do
@@NorthOz unsure what the v8 will do over the 2.8 though. I haven’t seen one video comparison where the v8 is better. Even towing
Or will I…
@@NorthOzbetter trans in the cruiser with power haul mode and better diff ratio. Hence the improved fuel consumption
I admire your ability to rationalise poverty as a virtue. Do you wish you had been able to get your hands on the GXL?
Knowing what I know now, the gxl is the path of least resistance and would suit 99% of people. However, for me I’m happy with the workmate. The vinyl is a major plus due to my daily activities and having a dog. Also, I love to tinker so adding all the extra bits is a lot of fun for me. In short, yes and no
Great video there Mark.

Yes they are a farm truck
I’m sure they would make a great farm truck
Jesus Toyota.. my 93 GQ patrol has a large factory armrest and 2 factory centre console cup holders… it’s pretty embarrassing, especially for the price..
I agree. My GU had a decent arm rest and cup holders. I’ll be honest, the lack of a useable arm rest/console is disgraceful. Even NGO’s and agricultural users would benefit from one. That makes little sense.
I still can’t believe that antique was only a few thousand dollars less then my next gen ranger raptor, Toyota don’t even bother using lube when they bend you over 😂😂
I wouldn’t brag about an over priced ranger that is weak and won’t last long at all. 👍
Apart from wheel alignment thing everything else is 70 series typics. Welcome to to 70 life boy.
Stop compare with Luxi
Thanks mate. 100% but I feel like it’s always good to give my opinion while I’m fresh from the hilux 👍
Land cruisers aren’t worth what you pay for them, I love em but they really aren’t a luxury car they are a basic one and should be priced accordingly, unfortunately your paying for the brand and reputation more so than the actual vehicle. Again love the 79 but damn id rather own my house 😂😂
They are a good vehicle but 90 000. Yeah Na
90k car and it comes with cruise control😂
Haha it’s got that at least 😂 But not electric windows 🫣

my old mans tractor drives and turns better then this 79 cruiser
