Honestly as a dude, I don't blame women for being extra careful. It's better to be safe and have people think you are an a-hole, instead potentially letting yourself be hurt.
I always say: *I'd rather be a living b!tch than a nice dead girl.* I'll never stop to give someone directions, I'll never let someone approach me when I'm alone at night, I'll always cross the street alone at night when a man is walking towards me, and I'll CERTAINLY never let someone into my apartment building if I'm there alone!! We all know men shouldn't do these things, we know this. They know this. But bad ones are bad BECAUSE they know this is a bad thing to do and still do it. My self-preservation is more important than coming across as "rude", and only bad people with bad intentions will be offended when a woman does something to protect herself. I'm assuming that you need a key to get into the apartment to begin with so trying to get into the gym I could see why she would think he just forgot it and was a resident. It's not like some random guy would come in (unless someone just let him into the building which is a different story). It would make more sense to let someone into an apartment gym then into the apartment itself.
You can never be too careful. My sister's co-worker was at a stoplight, when a guy came running up to her car saying he needed her phone to call for help cuz someone had been shot. The co-worker must have thrown her car into park, not knowing it trips the unlock button for the car doors. When that happened, the guy yanked open the door, dragged the woman out of her car and stole her vehicle.

He was crazy enough to knock at someone's door after watching them from their balcony so you just never know in these types of situations. So she was both right and wrong in this situation in my opinion.
