Electric Volkswagen E Transporter UK charge points DO NOT GO ELECTRIC JUST YET

  • If you are considering a fully electric van or vehicle my opinion is to steer clear, the UK does not have the infastructure to charge the vehicles on demand, rapid chargers are in very short supply and 9 times out of 10
you can't use them either because they are in use or broken.
The UK simply is not at a point to cope with everyone going electric I struggle to find rapid chargers in Manchester and I would say there are around 20 rapid charge points in the whole of Manchester.

@@ProBuildCarpenter That’s just crazy mate! I’d be protesting outside seriously. The vehicle has to be fit for use. The main issue is that city charging is so damn expensive so not only costing you money but precious time. Car makers only want to get around legislation so build these low volume vehicles without actually qualifying it the vehicle works! We will build them, charge a premium for them and when it doesn’t work we’ll do nothing. It’s not good enough!

  • @paulhurt839

The current electric Transporter looks pretty but it’s a third-party conversion, and was never designed to be an electric vehicle. It’s basically a stopgap that VW released just so they could say they made an electric van. Works ok for short trips around town, if you can charge back at base every night, but that’s about all. The Vauxhall / Peugeot/ Citroen vans are the only game in town currently (200 mile range, 100kW charging) and with one of those and overnight charging at home your experience would be totally different. The other van manufacturers really need to get cracking on proper electric vans asap - it’s like they’re still making mobile phones from the late 90s while everyone else has iPhones. The only other thing I’d say is, if you must charge the Transporter while on the road, find a 50kW charger where electricity is much cheaper. You’ll always pay a big premium at 150kW chargers (almost twice as much), and the Transporter is limited to 50kW so won’t charge any faster.

@@ProBuildCarpenter I expect it’s a question of how the van calculates it’s remaining range, not that it’s not charging the battery to (near) full capacity. Most EVs keep a history of your style of driving and usage and work out the available range based on that, so different owners may see a different range when the battery is full. It’s a software thing, and I agree it doesn’t sound like the Transporter is particularly smart at it.

@@paulhurt839 yes a few people have messaged me saying the same they can only get a charge to 40-43 miles it is quite simply the VW scam same as the diesel emissions, the van runs as it should for a few months then "learns" it can't really drive that far anymore, it is insane it literally was doing 76-78 miles for at least 3 months then went lower and lower

I have a 150 BHP t6.1 and I get around 60MPG in the summer at 60MPH, late 40s early 50s around town in the summer and mid to late 40s in the winter. It’s an insanely efficient van and practically as cheap to run as a decent car. Electricity prices have hiked, raw materials are really expensive and this decline in EVs and battery pack costs everyone banged on about really isn’t happening right now due to the shortages of everything, and will take a good 5-7 years to catch up with itself. I love the idea of an electric car and van, but the world clearly isn’t ready for them for the average consumer.

Ev is ok for hitting the shops and local infrequent trips but if you need to travel or do multiple trips like a courier the van is garbage and it is literally aimed at being a couriers van ! The problem is range and the transporter is as van man talks angle towards a very particular use case. Look in to the iD buzz cargo which should have 300 miles plus. I for one would love to have an electric transporter with comparable range to the diesel so I could do a camper conversion. To me bother the e crafter and e transporter are not attractive to me because of the lack of range. Add to that the degradation of the battery over time and it becomes even more unappealing. Hopefully Tesla will open there network soon like they are trialing in Holland and there will be more charge points, but a home charger is a must. Get a good EV friendly tariff and you’ll save loads of cash. Good luck anyway! You could always trade in the car for an ID buzz cargo if you need more range?

    • @ProBuildCarpenter

I'm looking at rejecting the van, the battery's have been dying for over 3 weeks now, it won't charge past 51 miles and they have said I have to wait until 12 Dec until they can even LOOK at it god knows how long battery's take to order and replace, we just aren't there yet with electric, vans shouldn't be unusable after 4 months, so I get 51 miles, at 18 miles comfort is restricted (in winter) no heaters, at 8 miles performance is restricted so I am getting a van that can do 20-25 miles max before it starts turning systems off.

Went to same Dealership to purchase 2 Replacements, SAME MANUFACTURER, and was advised that due to the age of the first purchases both Cars would need to have the Batteries TOTALLY replaced before they could put them on their Forecourt to resell, needless to confirm both Cars were worth NOTHING to the Dealership in Resale value, hence NO residual value to p/x for new vehicles.
CONCLUSION...Farmer went back to his Acres, informed our Local Fire Brigade, took BOTH Cars into the centre of one of the Larger fields and set light to them.
I must add that the Farmer, being an Environmentalist, made arrangements for what was left of the Cars to be Professionally removed from his Field.
To add "insult to injury" this particular wealthy Farmer has his own very efficient WIND TURBINES....Needless to confirm both He and his Wife, (and extended Families), are in the process of purchasing NEW Petrol Hybrid Vehicles...STAY SAFE..above all STAY CALM, Friend.,,G.A.R.
