15:30 Every new actor has a moment where you stop mourning the last guy and say: "Okay, he's the Doctor now." Matt Smith got that moment in less that one episode.
@@ciarantc7881 I hate to say it but I think mine for Capaldi proper first time round was Flatline confronting the creatures. A lot of that season was, in hindsight, the Doctor trying to understand the Doctor and watching it the first time round it only really hit me that he was close to understanding it at that moment. I think that's alright though, because also in hindsight I absolutely adore that storyline throughout S8. It's a fantastic examination of the character 2000 years into his life. I also heavily heavily doubt any modern Who except maaaaaybe Tennant could've achieved anywhere near the same results with it as Capaldi did.
My favourite part of this episode is probably the way Amy is made to be an audience surrogate figure. She was abandoned as a child by the Doctor, and so when he returns she's naturally sceptical and resentful towards him. Likewise, we the audience are going in with the baggage of losing David Tennant, and we're naturally sceptical of Matt Smith and his ability to play the Doctor. The scene where he asks Amy to "believe (him) for 20 minutes" also feels like he's asking US to see him and trust him to play the Doctor as well. I think it's fair to say he succeeded. Matt is absolutely fantastic, nailing the character's ancient weariness in spite of having the face of a 27 year old. He's incredibly goofy and silly, yet he manages to still feel reassuring and commanding. Karen Gillan is also brilliant; sassy, and sarcastic, yet clearly showing a very kind and vulnerable side, and her chemistry with Matt is wonderful. The direction is great, the script is packed with great one-liners, and the music is phenomenal, easily some of Murray Gold's best work. Series 5 is my absolute favourite series of Doctor Who, and I'm looking forward to re-experiencing it with you two!
Tom Baker put it excellently. His first reaction to the announcement was 'but... he's 12!' and then watched the series and went 'oh, but he's a 900 year old 12 year old'
Re: the food stuff. The doctor was still regenerating so he was a little dingy. He’s always somehow “off” until the regeneration settles down. Ten was in a freaking coma. And before he collapsed he was completely bonkers. That’s normal for the doctor (any regen).
I'm never seen any reactor comment on this, but I'm pretty sure the food thing comes straight out of Winnie The Pooh. When Tigger first comes to the wood he says that "Tiggers like everything," but then tries a whole load of things for breakfast that it turns out he doesn't like. What he eventually goes for is not fishfingers and custard, but Roo's strengthening medicine, but otherwise it's exactly the same. And there is something definitely Tiggerish about Matt Smith.
You know, I think you're absolutely right. All this time I was putting it down as a sort of Dr Seuss tribute (and I think it still is, a bit) but now you've reminded me of the Tigger thing, it's exactly the same, as you say.
Matt Smith has such big shoes to fill. Everyone was cautious about the relatively unknown actor taking over from Tennant but as the seasons progressed he becomes another incredible incarnation of the Doctor. Looking forward to future reactions. 💕
Exactly! I was such a Tennant fan and was so sure that I was going to hate Matt Smith, but about ten minutes into the episode I realised that I completely loved his take on the Doctor. The fact that he went in such a different direction with the role was perfect.
Hah Katrina's subtle knowing glances toward the audience when Paula's not looking are a huge part of the appeal of this channel. :-) PAULA: "I hope she's not a little girl version of the new companion; that would just be weird …" KATRINA: {just looks at the camera}

I heard that Karen and her cousin met for the first time when they shot the episode. The families split time ago, and they didn`t knew each other. Two parts I missed here where "-Why did you say six months? -Why did you say FIVE MINUTES??!!" and "-Are you gonna turn your back? -NOPE!!"... I really missed you ladies!
While it's true Karen Gillan had never met her cousin (Caitlin Blackwood), she did know of her and recommended her for the role. Caitlin still had to audition, and though she'd never acted before she got the role. The difference between your (Paula's) face between when Matt Smith first showed up and when he says "I'm the Doctor" when confronting the aliens was so great to watch! Eleven ended up being my favorite Doctor and it was great to watch your reaction change over the course of the episode!
As a DW fan from the 80's, I remember Matt Smith was the first actor who I immediately liked as The Doctor. Back in 2010, Doctor Who got a big marketing blitz by BBC America. I had never before seen the show advertised so prominently on the sides of NYC buses.
I actually found it harder because it was so "new" I was so used to David Tennant as he was the Doctor when I first watched it growing up and then went back to watch 9 properly after Series 2 when I properly loved it. So to have nothing carrying on from that to make it familiar at all was hard to take and because of that I still don't like 11 as much as I properly should. 10 was just too hard to follow, especially given my nostalgia.
To be honest, I really didn't care for the eleventh Doctor. I feel bad for Matt Smith, though, as it was not because of him. I thought, and still think, that Moffat's full time writing for Doctor Who is pure garbage. The Doctor was taken from being a living legend who always had the whole field in his mind, always had a plan, to a child who literally never did anything implying intelligence that had to flounder his way through every episode until he accidentally put the square peg in the proper hole.
It doesn’t get any better for opening season episodes, I’ve seen this one too many times and I still love it. I’m so happy that I get to go along with you guys for the journey. He sent the aliens packing then bought them back for a scoulding.... How awesome is that!?
There are better openers imo but this one is pretty great. And although I don't like Moffat's tenure as showrunner and Smith is only my 3rd/4th favourite doctor of modern who, Series 5 is amazing.

This is one of my favorite episodes. Such a great starting episode for newbies, as well. Whenever I talk to someone who is daunted by the sheer number of episodes with no idea where to start, I tend to recommend Eccleston's first episode or this one. I also think Matt Smith's run has some of the best music in all of Doctor Who. I'm looking forward to all the new reactions. Congrats on the new channel. So glad to see the Galifrey Gals back!

He was "discovered" by former companion actress-turned-agent Wendy Padbury, the same agent young actor David Tennant scared away by going all intense supergeek fanboy on her.
Paula: "Olivia Coleman. She would make a great Doctor!" And she nearly did, apparently;but chose to turn it down. This is my joint favourite opening story for a Doctor (tied with the one for Doctor #3.) It makes few concessions for fans of Tenant's era,as it basically wipes the slate clean and goes with a whole new set of characters. It sets plenty up;but stands as a self-contained story in its own right. Looking forward to everything that lies ahead :)

I know David Tennant remains many people's favorite Doctor even now, but Matt Smith will always be "My Doctor", I absolutely loved his run on the show. I love how he can seem both childlike and ancient, often at the same time. He had me pretty much from "Hello, I'm the Doctor. Basically....run!" I do think it's interesting seeing the differences in regeneration stories depending on whether there are people around who knew him before.
We all have a Doctor who is OUR Doctor. Mine was eleventh, even though ninth was the first one I ever see. Oooh, how I loved Rose Tyler un those days... When Eleventh regenerate, I was so sad.. Almost stopped seeing Doctor Who (in fact, I still haven't recovered)
The storyline was a good way to introduce the main characters to each other and get them off on their travels in time and space. At the time of broadcasting the new look TARDIS took me by surprise. Previous changes to interiors had just happened without fanfare of any kind and without a comment.
The 11th Doctor was always my favorite, I liked all the other Doctors too, but the 11th stood out as something special to me; not just because of the actor, but the writing. The show kind of adopted a sort of "fairy tale" feel to it during Moffats era, and as someone who always leaned more to fantasy than sci-fi (though I enjoy both), I greatly enjoyed that change in the mood.
Surely, Amy's childhood obsession with the Doctor is only the mirror of every fan over a certain age who hasn't been able to let go of this character? Which, at the last count, was all of us.
It is fun watching a couple of newbies. Your comments about Matt Smith echo the sentiments that we had back when Tom Baker left the show. But we knew Peter Davidson from Hitchhiker's Guide so we were excited to see how he did.
We all change, when you think about it. We’re all different people all through our lives. And that’s OK, that’s good, you gotta keep moving, so long as you remember all the people that you used to be.
I think I was the thousandth like on this video and I think that's pretty cool? Never seen your channel before but I'm really happy to have found it. Watching someone see these older episodes with fresh eyes is really charming.
Man what a treat to get home from work, juice up the ol lap top and see a 5x1 reaction from you guys. Katrina has the hard job of "knowing" how all of this plays out. When he tells little Amellia that he'll be right back...poor kat has to hold in those tears. It's still fresh for Paula but that was an Iconic moment. Just wanted you two to know I that I really enjoy watching your videos. (Both this and Trek) Thank you for another season!!!
I had that book when I was a kid too. It was one of those ones with the hidden items that you had to find to figure stuff out (or something like that). It was pretty cool back then.
The fish fingers were coconut cakes in breadcrumbs. When I hear people have tried fish fingers and custard I just smile because what would possess you to try it!
Yay!!!! God I love this episode. So glad you are back to the reactions :) All these years, and all the many times I have rewatched this series, Amy's theme still catches my throat.
Been waiting for this. Paula has now finally met my favorite Doctor! I had to laugh at the beginning when she said she wasn't expecting to like him very much at first. I had a feeling it wouldn't take her very long at all to warm up to him. Matt Smith has that effect on people. :) I do like that this season is basically a clean slate; makes it easier for people to jump in. This was the first episode I watched, and I was hooked instantly. Looking forward to seeing your reactions to the rest of the season! :)
You guys are great. I'm a long-time fan of Doctor Who and I love watching reaction videos to feel everything for the first time again. Please continue reacting to the Smith run and beyond!!
I'm sorry Paula, are you honestly saying that the Doctor has ever been reliable? Lol. I loved 11 from the start, you can just tell he's going to be zany and fun. I think I would have struggled if they'd cast someone darker like Eccleston was straight after Tennant. Another great reaction.
I saw Matt Smith on stage at the Old Vic in London last year. He really is brilliant, and proved why he's my favourite Doctor. All things being well (cough cough) I'm seeing David Tennant in December so I'll be able to compare.
After months of wandering aimlessly on the web, i have made it back to the oasis that is The Gallifrey Gals Who reactions. (BTW, you need a WHO version of fan/newb for your Wibbly Wobbly intro). Paula, i hope you love the future episodes as much as i have and Katrina, good luck with keeping those secret knowing looks hidden and/or repressed.. While 9 is my favorite Doctor personality and 10 has some of the best episodes ever written, the 11 team and overall arc is phenomenal and the reason DW exploded in popularity on this side of the pond. I just wish you hadn't seen River in the trailer cause the entrance is LEGEN... wait 14 years for it cause the Doctor has Tardis timing issues.... DARY
I'm watching the TNG videos too, but this really feels like you've properly returned. Never seen someone take to Matt Smith so quickly! He really does have some cracking episodes so this is going to be a great run.
This is the first episode of Dr Who I ever watched and I was hooked so this is my Doctor but once I came back around and saw Tennants run I could understand why 10 was so many others Doctor.
Great reaction, you two! I love Tennant too, but Matt Smith came in and blew me away. Don’t feel pressured, Paula, he doesn’t have to be your favorite, just enjoy yourself.
YAY!! Welcome back girls! Im so happy youre back on this journey together. Also it was originall intended for tennant to be in series 5 which is why some of the stories feel like something tennant could have done which is why many people had a hard time with the transition. He unexpectedly decided he would leave with russell t davies so they had to get a new doctor and rework some of the episodes a bit.
@@robvanriot ok ok they didnt write specifically for tennant but the plan was for tennant to do season 5 and i think thats why they did those specials and had such a long gap between seasons 4 and 5 because they had to get a new doctor and do the transition because tennant and davies were leaving. Also there are absolutley more than a few episodes in series 5 that were written before tennant left.
I am adding you both to my Patreon list-so much fun to watch you! As an old-school Dr Who fan (started watching in 1980, went to my first con in ‘82, a DW one in Chicagoland, where I met and kissed the cheek of Tom Baker), I will say that this is one of my favorite seasons of the entire series, even beating peak Four/Sarah Jane or Seven/Ace, and coming just ahead of Ten/Donna. Can’t wait to see what you think!
Aside from minor tinkering, I make this the 6th variation on the theme tune since 1963 - at one point in the 1980s it had a different arrangement 3 years running!
Good to see you all back doing DW again! Glad you like the new, revamped show too. It's certainly different but definitely in a good way. Also, those weren't actually fish-fingers, they're just sponge fingers instead (like you use in a trifle!).
Wow. You two look a lot like two ladies I used to watch react to Doctor Who on another channel. Oh, wait... This episode, which reinvents Doctor Who while still remaining the same series, is the perfect launch for your new channel, where you're reinventing your reaction series while still remaining the same. Glad to see you back in action!
You've now reached the end of Matt Smith's time as the Doctor, so now you know what he's about. But even so, I feel compelled to respond. 1) The Doctor is never at his most reliable when he's in the middle of regenerating. Ten slept through most of his post-regeneration process, and Rose had to pick up the slack for a large part of "The Christmas Invasion". Also, keep in mind the TARDIS was severely damaged. She wasn't exactly at her best. 2) As for Eleven's trustworthiness, at least he never goes off the deep end and declares himself "Time Lord Victorious" in a fit of pique. As much as I enjoyed Tennant's Tenth Doctor, by the time "The Waters Of Mars" wrapped, I was ready for him to regenerate.
For me Matt Smith was the Doctor as soon as he walked through the how a gram of all the past Doctors and said "hello. I'm the Doctor. Basically run." 😁❤
Also a little titbit of information when Karen Gillan was going to her auditions it was all very secret. So at BBC reception she had to say she was auditioning for a show called 'Panic Moon'.
My goodness, the wait has been too long ladies! Hahaha Fun fact: The Eleventh Hour was a book from the Animalia series.. kinda a Where's Wally with animals..
That was fun, watching someone else's reaction to watching a DW episode for the first time. I'm interested in seeing what you make of upcoming stories.
Yay, you're back. I'm with Kat, I didn't like 11 for a long time. I'm glad Paula's warming to him faster than I did. This is a great introduction to the new Doctor. The ending is so... him. After getting the Axtraxi to leave just in time, he called them back... just to theaten them into leaving for good. The best part is that it was total and utter bluff. He had no tricks left to play.
Fun fact: about the real-life cousin of Karen Gillan. She's now 19-going-on-20, and still acting. Here she is doing an interview at a premiere last year: th-cam.com/video/MuTERNVqYLc/w-d-xo.html

The storyline was a good way to introduce the main characters to each other and get them off on their travels in time and space. At the time of broadcasting the new look TARDIS took me by surprise. Previous changes to interiors had just happened without fanfare of any kind and without a comment.
"I've seen that man turn away whole armies at the mention of his name " Hello, I'm the Doctor. Basically.....RUN"
Just found your channel and really enjoyed this reaction. Looking forward to more. I love re-watching DW with other Whovians.
It is fun watching a couple of newbies. Your comments about Matt Smith echo the sentiments that we had back when Tom Baker left the show. But we knew Peter Davidson from Hitchhiker's Guide so we were excited to see how he did.
Oh, and for the fish custard, the fish sticks were coconut-crusted cakes made to look like fish fingers.
I believe they also used some real fish fingers initially.
Yay, Gallifrey Gals are back!!!
Took me a while to get over Tenant, but I can say now you got some awesome stories coming.
I loved David but warmed up to Matt instantly and he became my favorite doctor. You has some epic episode's coming can't wait.
We all change, when you think about it. We’re all different people all through our lives. And that’s OK, that’s good, you gotta keep moving, so long as you remember all the people that you used to be.
Paula’s wide eyed reaction is so adorable.
Been waiting a LONG time! They are back in action!
I think I was the thousandth like on this video and I think that's pretty cool? Never seen your channel before but I'm really happy to have found it. Watching someone see these older episodes with fresh eyes is really charming.
Welcome to our adventure!! ☺️
Missed the start to clap for my beloved N.H.S. but I’m here now and I am very very excited! Love you both :))
I was really ready to hate Eleven after Ten but the whole food scene made me love him and now I consider Eleven my Doctor.
Nine through Eleven are all my favorite depending on my mood. Admittedly I didn't stay through Eleven's whole tenure - Amy is DEFINITELY my favorite.
I’m so excited for Paula. I love his story lines. Just watching this makes me want to rewatch again, and I just watched it in February.
I do like that this season is basically a clean slate; makes it easier for people to jump in. This was the first episode I watched, and I was hooked instantly.
Looking forward to seeing your reactions to the rest of the season! :)
You guys are great. I'm a long-time fan of Doctor Who and I love watching reaction videos to feel everything for the first time again. Please continue reacting to the Smith run and beyond!!
we could never imagine stopping!! ☺️
the little face of pain Katrina made when hearing "silence will fall" I felt that in my core
Wait for Jodie Whittaker.
To think Olivia Coleman was prisoner zero lol
Matt Smith and Amy are one of the best combinations in the history of Doctor Who.
Karen Gillian was Soothsayer Girl in Fire of Pompeji that first saw the Tardis
the prettiest one...
Are you going to watch the minisode 'Meanwhile, back in the Tardis'"? There are two, so I mean the first one, obviously.
I haven't gotten into the reaction yet, but I have to say I had that puzzle book called "The 11th Hour" as a Kid. I loved it :)
Matt Smith is the youngest Doctor. Matt Smith was 26 when he took over as the Doctor.
This is the first episode of Dr Who I ever watched and I was hooked so this is my Doctor but once I came back around and saw Tennants run I could understand why 10 was so many others Doctor.
I've never seen someone look so concerned watching a new doctor hahahahaha
Great reaction, you two! I love Tennant too, but Matt Smith came in and blew me away. Don’t feel pressured, Paula, he doesn’t have to be your favorite, just enjoy yourself.
I loved Eccleston and Tennant but Matt Smith is my Doctor. I still think this episode is, by far, the best first episode for a Doctor.
Funnily enough this season is my FAVOURITE after Series 4
You're back !! Yay ....you "Gals" have been missed ....lockdown just got a little less grim ! Xx
Loving the energy of this and I look forward to many more😀
The book Paula mentions is The Eleventh Hour by Graeme Base (1989).
Also, her cousin who plays young her is now 18 and IDENTICAL to her
YAY!! Welcome back girls! Im so happy youre back on this journey together. Also it was originall intended for tennant to be in series 5 which is why some of the stories feel like something tennant could have done which is why many people had a hard time with the transition. He unexpectedly decided he would leave with russell t davies so they had to get a new doctor and rework some of the episodes a bit.
....no. None of that is true.
Finally! I can't wait to watch all of your reactions. 11 is my favorite doctor :)
I know it's probably a lot easier for you to do this remotely, but I really miss seeing you two on the couch.
GERONIMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Edit: are you guys reacting to the mini episodes?
My fave Doctor is Capaldi but this was the era where Who was at the peak of cool. Matt Smith was fantastic as the Doctor.
Aside from minor tinkering, I make this the 6th variation on the theme tune since 1963 - at one point in the 1980s it had a different arrangement 3 years running!
welcome back and welcome to season 5. first season is great and amy is one of my favorites. matt is great and he warms up very fast.
New sub! I was a kid of the 80s and grew up with classic Who. You remind me of my trauma when Baker left... Sad...
If you miss Tennant, you should dive into Good Omens
Hi. You.might like Broadchurch.
"Sorry Rory". Girls, you have not idea...
11 will grow on you. He stole my heart.
Ok ill admit it. I watched both this version and the full patreon verson thinking the two would be differnt reaction😂😂
My goodness, the wait has been too long ladies! Hahaha
Fun fact: The Eleventh Hour was a book from the Animalia series.. kinda a Where's Wally with animals..
That was fun, watching someone else's reaction to watching a DW episode for the first time. I'm interested in seeing what you make of upcoming stories.
There was also a BBC series starting Patrick Steward named The Eleventh Hour. There was a US adaptation. It only lasted one season, but I liked it.
I think Karen Gillian made Matt Smith's Doctor better, they play off each other so great!
