Whenever there's a new Doctor actor, I always wait for that moment that makes me feel... that him. That's still the Doctor. For me, the 11th moment was, after all that mess at the beginning, dude is sitting art the table and says, " Of course not! Box falls out of sky, man falls out of box, man eats fish custard. And look at you... just sitting there. So you know what I think? That must be one heck of a scary crack in your wall." WE HAVE THE DOCTOR, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! The fact that he remembered and kept it in mind... knew it was important to her... That's The Doctor.
Same. It took a while with Capaldi though(season 9 maybe), and I never felt it with Jodie Whittaker. I’m still waiting for that moment with Ncuti Gatwa.
Btw on set it was almond cakes in a breadcrumb batter with custard 🍮 Matt Smith was not eating fish fingers/fish sticks & custard...But that didn't stop millions of children & adults trying it worldwide 😂😂🤯🤯
From what I remember that was just for that first scene and all subsequent fish fingers and custard appearances were legit. So, Matt does know what it tastes like.
I could’ve guessed it wasn’t real fishfingers on the day, but didn’t know what the standing was. Also not impressed at Matt for being a pussy and not trying it. I did In 2010.😅
The comment about his outfit looking like a teacher is a good observation. The actors are involved in the costume design, and Matt Smith was inspired by how Indiana Jones dressed when teaching.
Syntell, your comment about the photographic memory was spot on: remember that this is Steven Moffatt's era - he did Doctor Who and he also did BBC Sherlock. you will notice a LOT of similarities between the two in the next several seasons ;)
Yeah this is the iteration of the show that really launched the careers of both Karen Gillan and Matt Smith. Like, both had worked before, but this was what made their careers really take off. Arthur Darvill (Rory, the nurse) is also in one of the bonus episodes of the sandman on Netflix, and a few other things. Also a very underrated actor.
The cousin thing isn't fan myth as far as I know, based on extensive reporting and Gillan's own comments - although the two actors first met on set - it was nevertheless Karen Gillan who suggested her cousin Caitlin Blackwood for the part. Gillan knew that Blackwood had acting experience and, although she'd seen photos of her, she had yet to meet her.
Maybe the only reason you're saying that is because he's really good was in the position for a very long time and you didn't give the other guy a chance. Even if you go on the thing of saying "well, Gold is obviously better". Maybe so, but do keep in mind we've only had one other composer. Every composer is different :)

So glad you are onto Season 5 and Matt Smith. His performance as the Doctor is amazing - goofy, serious, funny dark. And for a young guy (the youngest ever Doctor) he manages to somehow combine youthful energy with a sense of an old soul who has been through some serious stuff. Also, Steven Moffat (the showrunner) is the best writer of Doctor Who - get ready for some seriously wibbly wobbly stories!
“The Eleventh Hour” is definitely the best post regeneration story of NuWho. It’s up there with 3 of the best classic Who post regeneration stories, namely “Power of the Daleks,” (1966 2nd Doctor, Patrick Troughton), “Spearhead from Space,” (1970 3rd Doctor, Jon Pertwee), and “Robot,” (1974 4th Doctor, Tom Baker). I think, within about 10 minutes of this episode starting, I had fully excepted Matt Smith as the Doctor. He won me and a lot of other fans over (who weren’t sure about him when his casting was announced). Many fans thought he was too young for the role, and he was the first lead actor since NuWho returned who pretty much was unknown to the general public (which probably added to fans worry). I believe Moffat was quoted as saying that he was all ready to offer the role of the Doctor to an older actor (older than Eccleston & Tennant), but changed his mind when Smith auditioned at the last minute and blew everyone away with his performance. Thank God he applied, is all I can say! 😊
Another cameo in this is the old woman who recognised the raggedy Doctor. She's played by Annette Crosbie. I don't expect you to know her, but she's been in loads of things, but probably best known for starring in the brilliant British sitcom, 'One Foot in the Grave ', which ran throughout the 90s.
They had to change the console room as this series marked the change to filming in high-definition, which meant that flaws and imperfections not visible in standard definition would really stand out. I think this console room has a steampunk vibe to it.
I love that The Doctor is famous for running. You said yourself this episode its not the doctor unless we're running. But at the end he tells the bad guys to run! This is the beginning of a great run!

David Tennant nearly stayed on for S5. David was wavering on leaving once he found out Moffat was due to take over, he met with him & discussed his plans. It would definitely have been Tennant's last season but what would happen was that 10 would land in Amelia's garden on the verge of regeneration then fly off the same here. He would then meet Amy years later BUT she would know him but he wouldn't know her! We would find out the Doctor who landed in Amelia's garden was in his future from his standpoint in the season finale. Timey, wimey 😂 In the end David left Moffat an answerphone message thanking him for the meeting but declined the offer
Your reaction to the metaform was hilarious! Also, what the screen on the Tardis showed was the crack in the wall-it wasn’t a smile. So he’s not just taking her along for no reason-he wants to solve that mystery.
Young Amelia (Caitlin Blackwood) is indeed Karen Gillan’s cousin. The two were cast in their roles independently, though Karen did push for her cousin to be chosen. However, the two had never met until they were on set, as young Caitlin lived in Northern Ireland and Karen in Scotland. Today Caitlin is even more so the spitting image of her older cousin, and has had some relatively “minor” roles, including a lead in an award winning short film called Sundown, which I highly recommend (also in that film is Frazer Hines), who as a young man played Jamie McCrimmon, companion to the 2nd Doctor in the 1960s.
Murray Gold becomes the companion of the doctor during the Moffat era. His score underpins the whole of time & space, Also you sound like solid gentleman so I guarantee to you the words “raggedy Doctor” will break your hearts when it gets it call back,
I’ve been waiting for so long for you guys to get to this episode to see how you felt about it, especially as you were such a fan of the RTD era and of both Ecclestone and Tennant. That was one of my favourite episodes ever! Matt brought such a different feel to the doctor and yet it still felt the same. Genius! The score, particularly what becomes Amy’s theme was superb. Every character is so well acted, Karen and Arthur particularly. By the end of the episode there was this wonderful brother - sister chemistry between the Doctor and Amy which felt so fresh at the time. The cinematography again felt like a fresh new take on the show. Everything so crisp and vibrant. I was gutted when DT left, yet no sooner had this episode started and MS felt like THE doctor. The “I’m the doctor” speech at the end was a tad cheesy but hell I loved it! This is how you do a show refresh - everything is different but it still feels the same. A 10/10 for me! You should also rewatch the Fires of Pompei episode again and see if you can spot Karen Gillan! Great reaction guys as always, great to watch. 👏🏻
Funny you mentioned that the photographic memory thing was like Sherlock. Steven Moffat also created and wrote the Sherlock series as well as being the showrunner on this Doctor Who era.
My favorite doctor is David tenant and I loved rose and Donna. But I loved the way they filmed this season, it is in a way a more magical feeling for me maybe because of the music and I like how the story line flows. I think you’ll enjoy it!
So glad you guys are loving this show and that you've reached what I consider so of the highest eras (or at least some of my favourite) of Who. Time and Space, you watch us run! 💙
You will have a FUN time with this one. Especially the time travel storylines are particularly good. You gonna get some amazing scenes and yes some great score
Most of the stars you mentioned have acted for years and the stuff you know them from in many cases came out AFTER this episode. Doctor Who has been a mainstay of many British careers. It's a small tight community across the pond, and almost all the working actors work in Doctor Who at one time or another. Great reaction -- this is a fantastic season coming up. Enjoy!
Yes they are cousins karen recommended her but they hadn’t met until they started filming .no myth it was on the documentary’s and both actresses have talked about it at conventions.
Young Amelia is Karen Gillan's cousin. If it is a myth it was started by Karen and young Amelia cause they said it in the behind the scenes of this episode.
I think the myth is that they didn't know until they were both on set. As I remember it, they'd not actually met, or at least Karen hadn't seen her cousin for some time; but nevertheless it was Karen who'd suggested Caitlin to the production team.
If you want see a great movie with the actress who plays the grandmother in it, watch The Slipper And The Rose. It's my favorite Cinderella story. Annette Crosby plays the fairy godmother. She's amazing.
Way back when my sister and I convinced our dad to buy fish sticks and custard specifically so that we could try this combo. It weirdly wasn't awful. But not great lol
This was actually the first Tardis to introduce proper levels in the console room and at the time was the biggest yet. Obviously you've seen Ncuti's which obviously takes the levels element from this Tardis and blows it out of the water on scale, but this was step on the path there and pre Ncuti's it felt more impressive 😅
Yo, we're at Season 5 already?! So excited for this season, there are some stellar episodes ahead, including my absolute favorite one...for when I need a really good cry 😂 Nine was my first Doctor, Ten is amazing beyond conpare, but Eleven may almost be my favorite Doctor. He's so full of joy that it's infectious, and yet he also has a darkness to him, like in the way he calls thr aliens back and basically threatens them into leaving for good. Matt Smith absolutely crushes it. It actually took me multiple rewatches for Amy to grow on me. Karen Gillian does an amazing job, it just took me awhile to enjoy her character. I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys think of her as the season progresses!

This is a Steven Moffat episode, and he was the showrunner on Sherlock. You'll see a lot of little crossover effects.
And I love the new theme song! When he stepped through the hologram and said “Hello. I’m the Doctor.” That’s when I was like-“Okay. I like him.”
You've seen Karen Gillan before in The Fires of Pompeii, as one of the witches.
Karen Gillian actually appeared on The Fires of Pompeii as one of the seers!
“Meat candy” is craaaazy 🤣
@@jasonmarbach bwahahaha
I’ve been looking forward to your reactions to Matt : )
The girl playing Amelia *IS* the cousin of Karen Gillan (and thats GILLan, as in fish GILL)
Matt smith was a great Doctor!!! You're in for a great Ride!!!
This Tardis interior is so Beautiful!
The smile on the screen was a replica of the crack in the wall
Neat reversal - it took me ages to realise Nebula was Karen Gillan ....
And me
yess we’re finally here
I'm looking forward to episode 5-10 that episode makes me cry every single time and I will watch it again and again.
Oh heck yeah, love that Syntell missed the other name and Rekkai got all, "I got one on you!" lol
Fun fact young Amy is played by Karen Gillian’s irl cousin! Bloody nepotism 😅😂 (she’s brilliant tho really)
Young Amelia is Karen Gillan's cousin.
If it is a myth it was started by Karen and young Amelia cause they said it in the behind the scenes of this episode.
When people say it's a myth they are talking about that they didn't know until filming started.
I think the myth is that they didn't know until they were both on set. As I remember it, they'd not actually met, or at least Karen hadn't seen her cousin for some time; but nevertheless it was Karen who'd suggested Caitlin to the production team.
More recent pics of Caitlin look even more like Karen but still distinctly Caitlin.
Rose: Bad Wolf
Martha: The Woman Who Walked the Earth
Donna: The Doctor Donna
Amy: The Girl Who Waited
10:47 Arthur Darvill aka Rory was in CW Legends of tomorrow.
@31:55- that’s not a smiley, that’s the crack in her wall. It’s the ‘Bad Wolf’ this season.
The tardis wasn’t smiling, it was the crack in the wall
....also, fun fact, Young Amelia is actually played by Karren Gillian's cousin
Fun fact the actress who played the younger Amy Pond is in fact Karen Gillan's cousin. Caitlin Blackwood. :)
well I regret posting this halfway true the reaction :)
