Eleven is such a breath of fresh air - you've captured it quite well when you say "he's not trying to blend in, he's completely himself". It's so true. Ten tried to be human and romantic but his alien-ness would still poke through occasionally. With Eleven the mask has fallen away and you can see he feels the relief of that. And then with Twelve the mask falls away even more. I love the Moffat era. The Doctor is no longer trying to be a tragic hero - he's embracing the fact that he's just a glorious madman with a box. :D

Couldn’t have said it better myself. This episode was my introduction into this show before I started with Rose. The Moffat Era remains my favorite, and 11 was my Doctor from the moment I was introduced, up until The Zygon Inversion, when 12 became my Doctor. Either way, I believe Moffat is wildly underrated, and is not only a brilliant writer but a brilliant showrunner as well.

I feel like 11 was basically ptsd from 10.
The reason 11 is so alien is because he tried being human with 10 (which he did after realising the folly of the anger of 9), and it broke his hearts multiple times over.
These regenerations lead into each other so seamlessly, despite, even because of, the drastic changes in personality between each one.

Banger of an episode. 9, 10, AND 11’s intro episodes are just ALL bangers! Amy starts off a bit rocky as a companion, but imo evolves into the most loveable by far aside from Catherine Tate’s Donna. No spoilers for story/character evolution, but keep the idea of a “TARDIS TEAM” in mind, it’ll end up a riot I promise, nothing like Mickey and Rose :) And yes, what a distinct and defining episode aesthetic.

  • @bobdallas4860

This was my first full episode of DW that I've ever seen back in 2010 (I saw bits and pieces from Rose and Doomsday previously, but this was my 1st full episode) and I totally agree, it was made for new audiences and it did not disappoint the old ones, great jumping on point, oftenly regarded as the best introduction to a Doctor/era.
This season is my absolute favourite of Doctor Who (both classic and new as I've come to love both versions and it's all because of this season), the characters, the arc, everything worked for me and Matt Smith is truly charming.
There is not one single episode that I despise and, hopefully, without overhyping (as I'm well aware we are unique and we have different tastes) you will love this season as well (some gems are also sprinkled here, particularly one episode in the second half of the season, those who know, know).
Either way it will be one hell of a journey and I can't wait for your next reactions.

The Girl in the Fireplace is pretty much the guide book for the whole of Moffat's time as showrunner.
And yes, "Fairytale," is the lens through which it operates.

Took less than half an episode for me to accept Smith as the Doctor [even though Tennant is MY Doctor]. Moffat said that he knew he needed to pull all the stops out with introducing a new Doctor and new companion.
I loved it when they showed all the previous Doctors and 11 stepped through them.
I did think young Amelia was rather young to be a companion - even younger than Susan who was, I think, the youngest companion eve; she was a teen.
Young Amelia was played by Karen's cousin, so there's a strong family resemblance apart from the hair colour.

I think this is the first companion who we meet through the doctors eyes. She isn't the most relatable character because of her history with the doctor, but she still oozes enough charm to be on board with her. She's almost a mystery for the doctor to solve.

I love your analysis of this episode. You picked up on the fairytale elements which is something that Moffat himself said, when he took over as showrunner, was to be at the heart of the Smith era. I think you will enjoy what is to come. Many here will disagree, but it is my personal favourite era of New Who. When the series was rebooted in 2005, I really loved Ecclestone. I loved Tennant’s run, but I always wished 9 had been around for more than one series. If I had to choose, 11 would be My Doctor, although I have loved each incarnation. If you like the visual style of this episode, you would probably also enjoy Sherlock (another Moffat penned series). If you haven’t seen it yet it’s worth checking out. Visually, this episode has Sherlock/Moffat stamped all over it and it’s one of the many reasons why I love it. For me, it’s the best introduction to a Doctor that we get in New Who…so far

Love your reaction. As you mentioned at the start, I am new to your channel because I saw that you were starting the Matt Smith era. I grew up with Tom Baker in the 1970s and 1980s and he was always my Doctor but Matt became my favourite. (I liked Eccleston and Tennant was very good but for me, Matt is the perfect blend of goofy, dorky but, at times, dark and angry). Really good discussion after the reaction. You picked up on lots of things other reactors miss. So, great job - I will have to go back and watch some of your earlier reactions! FYI - young Amy is played by Karen Gillan's cousin. And it was the Pandorica will open.

    It was "Pandorica".
Matt Smith was far from my first Doctor, but (for me) he has been the best to date in terms of characterisation and overall performance. We all see and like different things in different people, though. 😀
This episode is a very strong one: in terms of what it tries to do, how it tries to do it, and the extent to which it succeeds in that attempt.

I love, love, love your reaction. I also appreciate the depth of your analysis, covering all the angles from this episode, which is one of my most-endeared episodes of the New Who scope. Through you, I was able to solidify elements that make the eleventh my doctor. It is not just Matt Smith, an actor who shines in his role as The Doctor. It is the writing (Steven Moffat), the chemistry between the doctor and the companion, the depth and complexity of their relationship, the cinema, the photography, and all those imaginary details that you point out. I was so glad to see this video, because of the joyful way you received eleventh, and went on board with it.

I concur that this is an excellent jumping-on point; this was the first episode I ever watched and it sucked me in immediately. I was already familiar with the premise of the show thanks to some Whovian friends who told me about it, but I think I would have been able to follow this just fine even if I'd gone in completely blind.
As for Matt Smith, he is 100% my Doctor, for reasons you will have already seen by now. Part of it is simply the fact that he was the one I started with and got me hooked on the show, but even after having seen all the others, there's something about his portrayal that I find particularly endearing. I think he also benefited from (on the whole) really good writing. Moffat's take on Doctor Who is decidedly whimsical/fairytale-esque, and Matt played the Doctor accordingly and the result was pure magic. :)

    1. Smith
    2. Capaldi
    3. Eccleston
    4. Tennant
    5. Whittaker

Moffat is a writing hero of mine. I like Matt Smith as the Doctor, but when I first watched the show I struggled for about 4 episodes because I had only seen Matt Smith play Prince Phillip in The Crown. It was hard to determine if I liked the new Doctor for a while.... By the way, I heard that it wasn't in the script for the doctor to walk into the tree at the beginning. But Matt ran into the tree and they decided to keep it in the show.

And here we are FilmBuff! Welcome to the fairytale! You're about to embark into what is widely considered to be the writing *PEAK* of this show.
And already you're picking up on SO MUCH nuance with these characters, I'm *so* impressed!
So interesting what you said about the 11th being so open, and also having clocked that so early as I think it's an interesting and important characteristic of this Doctor that is vastly overlooked! And also the note about him being paternal... As someone who has seen a bit of Classic Who... that is, afterall who the Doctor is. Fundamentally, he's a dad.
And also *very* interesting what you clocked about Amy seeing the Doctor as archetypal 'partner.' Not something I'd even considered (at least this early in such a conscious way perhaps.) I love that you see Amy's vulnerability behind her rough Scottish exterior also, seeing how unwilling she is to take a chance, to weigh the risk against the reward etc etc. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that that's going to be a recurring challenge for her, although the narrative vehicles that are going to be used to play that out you're going to LOVE.
Also, ONLY TWO EPISODES TO GO EVERYONE, *HYPE.*

Sadly, at times, people can't bother to see what our good natures deep within us can. We have a born fault, to judge harshly, & without knowledge, we all expect to be respected, & accepted, only to have fear, & confuse the situation before us. Out of self defense, even lash out, at an unfamiliar place, & other face that may not understand the what, where, or why¿ Or Who¿
Often the chance, to actually experience wonder thru a wide child's like glance. Is so dismissed, & not valued as adults are taught thru life, to not believe in what can't possibly be.
Uninvested, uninterested, & no time for fun, & exploration.
Given our inner child, a chance to truly live, & experiment, gives us a chance, to truly see with a different lens, & in the openess of other faces. As if each previous & precious moment of a camera, captures, encapsulates, captivates, & enchants seeking to amuse... & Entertains us, but more, entertains himself more. As the Mad man who charms, & more his desire to assist, he insists us to learn, from mistakes, even mistakes he himself has created.
    🪄🎩🎭🎬
The fear abates, we learn to trust in the Mad man with a mysterious, blue box, hope to let ourselves see beyond what people, usually are only enabled to.
The need to question everything, & everyone.
The Eleventh Doctor, is constantly on the move like our inner child, starved for the need to find out more, but constantly growing, he tests us, showing us his camera focus, & out of focus, the Looney Cartoon with the wide eyed vision, who is afraid of people findingout he is unable to see the wonders, of the universe, he had run away to, with his ever faithful Companion's, & Magic Time machine, we all want to come along, as an extra Companion, to witness, & be a part of something spectacular, we could only dream of, or play out, as junior Spacemen, & Space women, with a mischief, spinning lines beyond, what is already written, & what may be.
Matt Smith was actually my fourth Doctor.
Tom Baker was my first, definitely mad man with jelly babies.
As a little Amelia Pond, I seaked for so much more then my loneliness would allow, may be one daze, get to reach those who rather mock, or misunderstand. Actually join in the excitement & wylde fun.
The Tardis has a Camealian circuit, that may be broken, but insides ever changing, so as it's ever changing, & refreshed & renewed Doctor. An Ancient Alien life form, who is more like a fariy god parent, or worse then anyone's Aunt, really to sum him up, is like trying to verbalize with a human understanding, can only be considered an insult, he can be thought of a strange tinker toy, that keeps exploding, with a fusion intensity, & to do so, the man will only revert back into the understated, casual, yet familiar blue box...
Matt Smith as the lovable yet ever wacked out Doctor with the child's like sensibility, & precocious spirit of the mischievous Cat in the hat,top hat tails & a really daft dance to either warm your heart, or fool you into an adventure with a purple Cheshire cat. The mad Hatter, Smith plays with a child like abandon, & no clear direction, yet always one step ahead of himself.
Only too accepting of faults in those he adores, yet sadly like us all, he can never feel completely a part of.
The Humany woomany, people he sees as Giants, as Unique as the Stars themselves.
Yet ever Alone, The Doctor finds himself trapped in his dark past, he has had to hide, from those he hopes to protect, as well as his own misjudgement, he holds conveniently over others, calling the tea kettle black, only to realize too late, he can't be alone for long.
He admires His first face that sees his, with her sweet pink cheeks, as she smiles back at the stars, fearless lil Amelia Pond, before we find out the Tardis has over shot the time, as Amelia & her ever boyfriend, Rory, grew up, without the weird Raggedy Doctor. Disillusioned & distrustfully, maybe even PTSD, only aware, that her imaginary friend, the harmless Raggedy man, who extended his concern, & kindness to help her, after the slight meal, that only the child within us all, could appreciate. Now Unable to stomach, certain foods he could have maybe eaten & craved before. What he feels is unfamiliar, with a whole new body, finding the broccoli, & lima beans on the plate hard to suddenly finish. Instead settling on custard & fish fingers.
This particular Doctor seems more as a observant man child, & tho he's been thru a past adults would only gape at. Among his scattered, & displaced memories, & his need to constantly explore, to hardly sleep, like a space cat. Unless you have a Dream lord, in your Time lord, he can't turn off the Manic energy, he was created from.
The youngest of the Doctor's & Time Lord's, searches for answers, to the ultimate questions, that his Companions hold, & give him so much more then he himself ever expected.
It is a chaotic, often perilous, & peculiar journey thru time & space, into the unknown, & very dangerous, parelle universes, against laws & rules, seems the Doctor hopes to avoid, but isn't to be so trusted when the Doctor's lies, don't ring true, by those he considers his enemies thru time. Same he continues to abandon logic, to fix. Including sorting out the puzzle that is his Dear Amy Pond.💖👩🏻‍🦰💖
Matt took on the role directly after beloved David Ten's, Doctor Tennant.
No one wants their Doctor to leave, to go even where the stars blink out, Don't Blink.
But our adored Actor's, in truth, can't keep playing one part, forever, no matter how fun a part might be. Unique that, no Actor could stay on the stage playing over, & over a part that no longer fits them.
The True Whovian fan's, know what's coming.
& even tho like a comet, one Star takes the role of their personal Doctor, respectfully, up, & only hopes to enhance our fulfillment, even with ever limited attention spans, yet unquenchable need for more...🍿🥤
Enter the Eleventh Doctor, freshly off of Ten's destructive, & unwanted last bow from the Doctor's TARDIS, & Unfairly another Actor steps in to be the next, doesn't necessarily mean that Persona is going to be a good one...
Enter Matt's often non stop, ball of erratic & energized, positively infectious, & so enthusiastic, yet ever mysterious Doctor Eleven, is Unbelievably heart warmmingly, fun loving. Cute yet Wise Mad man, but also the best friend you didn't know you needed, & sometimes you think you don't. When you should.
But Eleven full of tricks, & surprises, turns out is just as in need, as all of us are, of an amazing Companion or two, individuality. To come along on never ending adventures, tho sometimes off the wall, or unintentionally endangering his Tardis buds as they dare to continues their travels in Space, with their amazing Doctor from the imagination from the Moff. & Matt Smith.
Only given over to the child like splendor, & wonder, that can still be there, within us all.
We just have to see it...
Thank you FB. & Forever favorite impossible, yet possible incredibly, & ever Amazing, award winning,🪄✨⭐ Doctor Matt Smith.
    💖✨🌝🌝🌝✨
    ✨🤠😎🥺🙂🤓👩🏻‍🦰🧑🏻👩🏼‍🦱👧🏻❤️✨⭐✨
& his just as incredible, Time & spacey Humanwoomee Tardis family.
& Thank you so much for all the Jammy dodgers, yum. Thank you Canada, Love from American Whovian. ✨💫🎩✨⭐✨💫💖🎭
    💖🌍🌏🌎💖🐶👩🏻‍🚀💖💫🎭😎💖
    😢 Missing Matt as 11.❤️✨🐶👩🏻‍🚀✨🌝✨

Not my favorite era (not a fan of the forced "WHACKY ALIEN!" stuff where the Doctor becomes essentially a cartoon character surrounded by not-so-thinly-veiled sex jokes), but it did have a good start. I had some hope with Series 5. Then...Series 6 happened and my hope died, along with my faith in Moffat. Seriously, between Series 4's end and Series 5's beginning, I even had a pin that said "In Moffat We Trust". I threw it in the trash about three or four episodes into Series 6. It taught me that just because a writer can write really great single episodes (or two-parters) does *not* necessarily mean they can put together a whole series well.
