In the US we hear that crap about K&N not filtering as good as OEM or Fram Paper filters. I drove my 99 Ranger 210,000 Miles mostly on a K&N and it was perfectly clean. I had one bottle of spay on for over a decade. I think I cleaned the Filter maybe three time in 20 years. LOL. fine. I lived in AZ desert much of the time which is very similar in dust as the Outback. No issues. I think people just look for things to complain about. If you want a real answer then test the old oil for particulates and find out the truth. Finally, its is $20-30 to replace a paper filter. The K&N was $70 in 99. I only ever bought one. The truck still runs to this day LOL. I finally upgraded to a 2022 Ranger Tremor this week. The 99 got so upset she blow a alternator on the way home from the Dealer. The motor is fine. I am just jealous you Aussies get the Diesel version. Our emissions laws are written by Retarded with an agenda.

Never used "Rubber Grease", great idea. Thanks. Caught a inexperienced mechanics helper "cleaning" my K&N with compressed air. That's why I do everything myself, with help from guys like you. Appreciate your time. Cheers!

Hi Anthony, I have a 2022 Prado GXL and one of the first things I did was to buy a Terrain Tamer air box dusting and shim kit that strengthens the air box preventing dust going past the air cleaner. I ran it with the paper filter checking it every thousand Klm's for dusting and the top of the air cleaner seal was spotless, check them out its a cheap fix to an ongoing problem especially in the 200 series landcruisers.

I nearly bought the K&N last weekend but went with another Ryco. Interesting thing, the new Ryco has an extra layer that my old Ryco didn’t. It’s about a 5mm flat piece on the dirty side. I think it will help with the insects that usually get stuck in the V’s. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I ran K&N on my 3VZ 4Runner and my 5VZ Prado, now on my 1GR Hilux I use a TRD filter (same oiled cotton design), never had an issue with dust, I have found I need to regularly clean residue off the MAF. Though I use more oil than you did.

I like that idea of yours to turn the snorkel around, however I would like to try a cyclonic air separator but have had a hard time trying to source one.
    Any ideas?
I have had a K&N and now it sits in its original plastic bag on the shelf.
I found the bugs jamming in the bottom of the folds an absolute pain and very time consuming to clean throughly.
I would have thought you would have cleaned the air filter with the degreaser from the kit as it looked dirty to me.
I used to hold it up to the sun to tell.
The beauty with the design of the Toyota genuine air filter is that the pre filter looking foam/or whatever that spongy material is, is that the bigger particles cannot get to the filter part in the first place. I’m surprised that K&N don’t have something like that that can be cleaned as well. I remember having a ride-on mower that had that as well as the folded paper filter. It was a great idea as it took the brunt of the bigger particles leaving the filter to filter out the finer stuff. It actually enabled the paper filter to last longer. This bit of thin foam I could clean easily and squeeze most of the water out before letting the sun dry it throughly.
I was told that there is a film of something similar/or is silicone spray which increases the ability of the paper filter to filter as the dust “sticks” to the film, much in the same way the dust sticks to the oil in the K&N.
Did you actually clean the cross frame near the MAF sensor before you put the K&N in last time?
I hope so as that amount is too much for my liking as it can stick to the intake manifold in some places together with the oil residue from the crankcase blowby and of course the reduced amount of soot than normal due to 7mm hole.
The sides were nice and clean, so I’m thinking the plastic mesh over the intake near the MAF sensor was not cleaned before.
    Can you remember?

it would be interesting to see if you had a air filter service indicator installed somehow to see how much of a vacuum that k&n is with it at that stage of service compared to a new factory paper one, I'd be interested in seeing that if you could find a way to fit a service indicator into the clean side of the system, just for a experiment. because it might not be blocked but it may be coursing a restriction but you can't tell because it's not showing anything, and I'm not sure if it will bring up a code if it recognize a blocked air cleaner, i know a motorcycle with a oiled air cleaner will run with it nearly caked off but it runs better with it cleaned and reoiled.
