To both Catherine Caroline Forbes and Cubetrosity: thank you for your comments. This is general common sense. Always ask the owner first. You don’t ever try to pet a dog or any other animal that you don’t know. Heh, though when it comes to my dad’s dog, Jet, she’ll be going straight to you for attention. She’s a love bug and loves attention. Not to mention she’s hyper, very hyper. Don’t know what breed she is. But still, love your comments.
@@BirdLady2782 Really? The whole point of the original post was that no matter what, ask the owner first. I was just sharing info about my dad's dog who's a love bug but hyper.
Saw one (a younger dog) at my local Walmart in Northern Michigan; the second time I saw it, with its handler/trainer, I HAD to ask what breed it was. You could see it was a "pedigreed" pooch. The gentleman told me I COULD pet him, (never DO so WITHOUT permission, people!) and stated that he was a "Redbone." (Coon Hound) Being a "Lab" man myself, (Labrador Retrievers) I STILL have high regard for ANY good looking, quality dog--words HERE can't describe how AWESOME that Service Dog In Training looked--well, maybe "magnificent"---and he WAS... lol
P.S. I THOUGHT it was a "Redbone," but you really don't SEE any up here. Down South, I would think they're much more common. That dog was something special, that's for SURE...
Dogs are the best animals in the world to humans, and I think that there should be a DOGGO prison for dogs who attack people and it should be run by moderate prison offenders.
I' work in the transportation industry and have witnessed passengers lie and call they're pets service animals. A service animal is trained and does not go around sniffing people or urinates on floors. Unfortunately there are low life people who abuse a law and make it harder for people who truly need service animals. Just waiting for the day when someone puts a vest on a raccoon and now it's a service animal. That's the real abuse.
@Jim Elliott Diabetics can have service dogs. Diabetic coma can in worst cases lead to death and losses of limbs and the illness is very dangerous, fitting the needs for service dogs. Before you try insult me, I am the daughter of a blind and deaf woman, who is looking for a guide dog. I'm not stupid and I will advise you to actually learn on the subject before trying to fly out insults and try to hurt people.
As a wheelchair user, nothing rang more true to me than "Its like telling someone 'i need your wheelchair, get out'" like no. Service dogs are there for Medical reasons. People NEED them. Just because its not a lab like most people assume all service dogs are, doesnt mean its not a service dog!
@@SteveLeicht1 I agree. Service dogs should be licensed by the state, proving they are in fact service dogs with the licence clearly displayed so no one ever has to be questioned again, and fakers get turned the fuck away as they rightfully should.
Greg Hamilton I know many people think that makes sense to non service dog handlers but if service dogs were required to have licenses that would be like require the disabled to be registered and that’s very unconstitutional and illegal.
@@GregHamiltonHasaGoogle hell no it will cost those of us who need a service dog but on a fixed income. Plus it'd cost the taxes to go up in order to pay more people to do the certification. I owner trained my dog, it took me 3 yrs. These dogs go for 20 grand-60 grand from a program. Then there's the 2-8 yr waiting list. Hell no
I have a friend that appears completely fit, and healthy. He is in his early 30s, and does not appear to have a disability, but he has a German Shepherd service dog that he takes everywhere. People make rude comments, and confront him sometimes because he looks healthy, and they don't think that he should have the dog. What those people don't realize is that he has a severe seizure disorder. His service dog is trained to alert him when he is about to have a seizure, and to protect him while he is indisposed. No one has a right to confront someone with a service animal, and demand to know their medical condition.
Not ENTIRELY true. But basically yes. There are only two questions that store associates/security/etc can ask. And there isn't really a clear answer on whether the service dogs owner HAS to answer them or not. But. You CAN ask. 1. Is this animal for a disability? (Note this isn't asking WHAT disability you have) 2. What work is this animal trained to perform? (I.e. what is it supposed to do for you?) Both are designed to give employees a way to recognize that the animal is working, and what it should look like if the animal is currently performing it's function, and the person may need assistance or something.
@LooneyPlootzy Some people, kinda like the guy that is being spoken about in this video, are so conceded that THEY demand answers for something that doesn't even concern them at all. My grandma only has one functioning arm due to a botched breast surgery to remove the breast due to cancer, but she was still able to keep the non-working arm. Because of the arm and some other health issues she is able to have a handicap sign for her car. One time when she got out some jerk confronted her about it, saying that she "didn't look handicap" to him. Some people are just very ignorant.
@LooneyPlootzy No. Only the employees of a business, security officers, or officials for the property you're on, or the business you're a patron of, can ask these questions, tell anyone else to fuck off and if they continue, call the police or security. Keep in mind, like I said, even for those who are entitled to ASK it's a grey area as to whether you're REQUIRED to answer or not. As always, consult a lawyer for legal advice, not me.
It’s actually a federal offense to interfere with a service dog, or to attack a service dog. It comes with a hefty fine and jail time if a handler so chooses to push it far. As a teenager service dog handler I have been shoved, belittled, called names, my leash has almost been snatched from my hand and people have tried to hit him with shopping carts or step on my dog. As well as my last dog has been attacked by multiple fake service dogs in Walmart and had scars. The US needs to do something better for us. The way we’re treated is absolutely disgusting
Omigosh that’s insane! Who the hell would hit a dog with a shopping cart, any dog, for that matter??? I’d rather mistake a fake service dog for a real one than cause emotional distress on the part of a legitimately disabled owner by accusing them of faking. I work in retail, I haven’t encountered a service dog user yet, but how do you know if it’s a legit service dog or not? I assumed by the vest and stuff that it would be legit but I keep reading that scumbags are purchasing fake vests to have fake service animals. Is there a question I should ask or a label that would be visible?
Unfortunately, there are some people that just want their pets around and put a service dog vest and make thing so hard for us who actually need one. :(
@@juliarunn5009 a real service dog is one that has been specifically and thoroughly trained to mitigate a disabled persons disability. You can usually tell by the way they act and in America, they legally don’t need a vest or anything marking them as a service dog. If you have doubts, you can ask 2 questions. 1. Is that a service dog And if yes 2. What task or tasks is it trained to provide. If they answer with “it just makes me feel better” or anywhere along the lines of them saying emotional support, they are fake. If they slap down a card and say that’s proof, it is not as no national registry is in existence and the ADA does not recognize them. I answer with “psychiatric and medical alert and response” Even if they are real service dogs, if they are causing a scene or trouble, you have the right to ask them to leave.
Most dogs get "aggressive" if they feel their owner/companion is in danger or they feel threatened themselves. Sudden or perceived aggression movements can trigger their fight response as oppose to us where we'll either fight or flight, it's natural. It's also the way dogs are trained and treated.
@Jeff N And someone can punch you in the mouth for being an idiot too. If they aren't bothering you then you have nothing to say unless your a total douchebag.
@Jeff N that what I said! Only her doctor would even know if she needed a dog because that one those things they have to know in order to care for the patient.
@eboston7591 BS from someone who doesn't understand mammals. Any sentient mammal will respond with force (attack) if provoked enough. Attacking what a dog is guarding is a threat to their survival and as substantial a threat as attacking one of their puppies. A trained dog may not go for your throat as a wolf might, but will attack if necessary to remove a perceived threat to their pack.
I get that it was sarcasm, but why not just be professional and just say non-aggressive? The way he said it some people may not interpret that as sarcasm.
Yup. I like how the lady described service dogs as wheelchairs. Obviously dogs are not inanimate and do have feelings, but imo that makes them even more helpful in a way.
aspen anderson More helpful "In A Way"??? I'll let that slide, maybe. But as you see. Us Service Animals get treated even Worse than Wheelchairs. And when we're this Big. You could ride us Too 🤣. ...dogs by a mile !!!...

I'm on the other side. I was bitten in the face at 5 years old by a German Shepard and had to have several surgeries. To this day (I'm 55) I have an incredible feeling of fear around medium to large dogs. People that walk around with these larger service dogs because their scared or whatever fear they have, causes me fear. I'm not doing anything to them, but they are certainly doing something to me. To be clear, I served 21 years in the military and have gone to years of therapy, but that overwhelming fear of those types of dogs has never left me.
@@gailbatty1702 it’s horrible that you were bitten and I understand that seeing dogs can be uncomfortable for you. But service dogs will not come up to you unless their owner is in need of medical attention. Service dogs are trained to be out of the way and will stick to their owner at all times.
@@tanvivaishampayan1680 True and to be a little more clear, uncomfortable is an understatement. Full on panic if I'm too near or surprised is more applicable. Also, I know I can buy service dog vests from a dozen web sites including eBay and Amazon. I know all these big dogs are not trained. I just have no idea which ones are not. I told the employee this was illegal and he had no right to do this. The manager came and agreed with the employee. I told the blind man he should press charges,I gave the # of a lawyer that could help him. But he decided not to do anything but leave. I wished he would got the lawyer. People need to learn not to oppress these individuals or their helper animals.
Troy Evitt Vests are, sadly, faked and sold online. Stores are allowed to ask for the paperwork proving the animal is a service animal, however aren’t allowed to ask what your disability is. Only the paperwork is valid.
@@alize0623 The law bends to the prevention of the harassment of the legitimate Service Dog-handler, not to the detection of the fraudulent misrepresentation of a pet. @Main Street Boxer It's not so much knowing, or even caring about, every jot and tittle of the law/facts. I had a platonic female roommate whose boyfriend was Shock And Awe-era Iraq Veteran who was regularly bothered by businesses who thought they didn't have to admit his PTSD service dog. There were several incidents where we were confronted by employees and proprietors who A) Thought he because he wasn't blind that his dog wasn't a real service dog, or B) Thought that, just because they were private business owners who built that business with their blood, sweat and tears, they didn't have to obey the Americans With Disabilities Act. One crybaby business owner actually believed that he had the discretion to dismiss the A.D.A. as "some communist Federal Gub-Mint New World Order bullshit" because it was his precious private business, empowering them to choose who and who not to serve. Another snitched to the police who promptly told him that the ADA and Public Accommodation Law trumped his proprietorship. That piece of shit kicked out all of his customers and closed for the rest of the day in protest. Thanks to Facebook, he had to accept a "Service-Dog-In-Day" in his precious fucking private business the subsequent Saturday...some of those dogs were just wearing fake Service Dog vests, For The Win. I LOVE that shit. Same as when racists didn't want to serve blacks but were forced to do so anyway and when Christians don't want to serve LGBT but are forced to do so anyway. If you're going to run a business, you will have to submit to the edicts of a well-functioning collective society. The Rugged Individualist is dead.
Some people just like to start shite over nothing to make themselves feel superior. My mother always has an opinion when she sees a dog in any store and voices it loud enough for others to hear. I always have to tell her to shut up and if it bothers you that much go wait in the car.
It’s a service animal IN TRAINING. It’s not officially a Service Animal. She’s in the wrong and the other customers were in the right. She may wanna educate herself more with the ADA. 🤷🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️ Edit: any business can refuse service as the law doesn’t force them to allow such practice on/in their property.

Why did this man take the issue upon himself? It was NOT his place whatsoever. He should have addressed the issue with the store manager. With that being said, the issue he had was between his ears and why would people join into the malay? Instead of a KAREN, we have a KEN issue. I'm sorry this lady had to endure this. God bless.
Don't belittle Kens or Karens . Ken is innocuous. So was Karen Carpenter. How about using "Carrion" for both genders with that personality disorder instead?
Thank you for saying that, I've been trying for quite a while to tell people to stop using the name Karen or other names that they call obnoxious people, because they're actually being the same way. I know a really nice lady whose name is Karen, and by these idiots calling someone that they consider obnoxious, they are the same kind of people that they find offensive.
a big argument is people act like the dogs are gonna contaminate the grocery store but I bet they don’t even wash their hands and their fridge is full of cross contamination.
Usually the "Karen's" and "Ken's" are afraid of the dog. I get angry about fake service animals. People don't understand how much harder it is to go in public with a service animal. That makes me sick. Service animals are necessary and people who try to take them are committing assault. Comic Drew Lynch (he's on TH-cam) has a stutter and a service dog. He talks about incidents like this that have happened to him and others, plus some of his commenters also share such stories. Always get the police involved and get a record of each incident. I understand this lady was shook up, so I'm not criticizing her, but do try to get these offenders held accountable.
I used to work for a King Soopers myself and we had no problems allowing service animals into the store. In fact many people there welcomed them, thinking they were a bit of sweetness for a sour day. If memory serves, we only had one incident where a man with a prosthetic leg was driving around in a motorcart and he was YELLING at an elderly man for having a service dog 'in the fucking way.' Now. State law FORBIDS us from getting physically involved... but someone did wheel a cart around and separated the two as the elderly man tried to move away. Security had to be called in... Made me FURIOUS We couldn't interfere.
The store should have surveillance tapes that could be turned over to the authorities for possible identification of the harasser. I also agree with the woman, it’s the cheaters that cast bonafide service animals in a bad light. I used to work in a grocery store and would see folks bring in little “purse dogs” and say that the animals were emotional support animals - which does NOT mean they are automatically service animals! - or try to claim them as service animals. We were prevented from confronting them or even raising the issue because the law prevented us. Service animals are specially trained to perform tasks to assist their owners. They are also trained to high standards of behavior in public. Think Guide Dogs for the blind and that’s the sort of training involved. The animals must pass rigorous training and tests to gain the skills needed to operate in potentially high-stress situations, such as heavy crowds and areas with obstacles/hazards, while keeping calm and focused. A very sad incident in my area a couple years ago involved an actual service dog being violently attacked by a non-service dog on a public bus. If memory serves, the service dog was a smaller breed and ended up dying as a result of its injuries. The initial claims of the owner of the attacking dog were that it was a service dog, too. This was found to be total bullshit. It was a horrific example of what can happen when folks cheat so they can take their f’ing pet where they shouldn’t.

Main Street Boxer-I'm not sure what legislation you are referring to unless it's something to do with the ADA act. That's fine but many many people don't have a clue about service dogs. Even the reporter stated there aren't many regulations about these animals. So if a dog is too big like this man thought, then they go off half cocked and that's not a regulation. So I have to disagree with you. There aren't enough laws about service animals and where they are allowed.
To the man in this video: You should stay inside your home and have your stuff delivered to your house because you want to discriminate against people with disabilities.
I say there are times you need to impose your will someone trip kicked another person. Well it may not affect me but I don’t want someone to kick another person so I stop the person from kicking again. Imposing your will isn’t ways a bad thing I don’t have problem with people imposing their will just imposing their will unreasonable. Another situation is on the subway a man using a cane to walk needs a seat though someone is taking up two. Well it doesn’t affect me so I should let the man fall. It’s not illegal to take up two seats if you report it then nothing will happen either. The man doesn’t have a right to a seat. Still I would impose my will and ask him to give up seat or shame him for not giving up his seat to the disabled old man.
CavedMan Jim Though if it isn’t by law then it is imposing your will. You think they should stop taking up the seat it not based on law or anything written just what you want. It is my will when it doesn’t effect me it’s just me talking to them because I want the guy to have a seat. When you try to do something that will effect others when it wouldn’t effect you I would say is imposing your will. I take the train everyday and people often times people take up two seats even the disabled and sometimes I don’t have seat to give up. When I have a seat I give it up and my ride is like 15 mins so it’s pretty short. I think politics need to improve because people take things has you are with me or against me. That’s not healthy way of think and all you are doing is dividing yourself. People need to listen to other ideas instead of just trying to put them in categories like democrat or republican. The choices are limited which supports the you are with me or against me argument because you have two choices if you vote one party you are voting against the other.
CavedMan Jim m I think since Social Law is constantly changing and is different for each person then it can’t really be used in situations since it’s not official or written. Since the guy you are talking to could have a very different view point. It’s basically what you think because of it being different and unofficial. So I think that is imposing your will. It will probably take centuries for our political system to advance though it going to happen there were times when we had one party and times when we had three. It’s going to change eventually.
We had a dog on the farm that liked everyone EXCEPT a worker sand blasting the house. Kinda crazy. Met a guy who had and probably trained a racist dog. He said he's barking at the right people. Me, what do you mean? He said he didn't bark at you when you walked up. Just saying there's possibilities.
Also, the idiot is extremely lucky that the dog is very well trained. Bernese are closely related to Rotties. Same size, same strength, etc. Now if when my wife and I still had our Rottie (RIP Raven) and approached my wife like that, the police would not have been the idiot's most pressing concern.

It used to be only guide dogs but service dogs role have so expanded because of what dogs can do. I don't know why people freak out about animals. I always love seeing animals at stores whether it's a dog, snake, cat, goat, or chicken. It brightens my day.
It's just too bad some owners can't control the animals. I was on Lowe's once and a man with a HUGE dark gray dog (probably a lab mixed with something) was walking around the outside garden near me. It's just a dog, GEEEEZ! It's just a DOG!" He had no sense of other people's entitlement not to have dog snot wiped on them. In his world, dog snot is like water from the faucet, like the air we breathe, as in "dog snot is part of daily life". An employee came over and the man whined at the employee I was complaining about his dog and I called out "he wiped his snot all over me. Take better control of your dog. I've been spoken to like shit under the shoe of an asshole young woman who scolded me for having my leashed (on the ground) chihuahua in the apartment elevator in a pet friendly complex that I paid fair and square to be there. Scathed at me about people with allergies like I was behaving like the man in Lowes or the lady in your situation. I was scum to her. This is a problem about assholes on both sides believing everyone else is wrong and forcing themselves on innocent fellow citizens.
Here’s the deal. If you have a SERVICE dog. It’s completely legit to have it in a store. I have no problem with people and their pets in their own house apts etc. I am an animal lover. And have my own. One thing I don’t do or understand. ASIDE FROM SERVICE DOGS. Why do you have to take fee fee grocery shopping with you. I’ve seen this in FL, and only with the seasonal people coming down. Sitting fee fee in the grocery cart, while grocery shopping. There’s a reason the FDA have laws about animals where food is. Hookworms and roundworms are two of the most common parasites found in our pets that have zoonotic potential for humans. These worms can be very prolific and one worm can produce more than 100,000 eggs a day. I don’t know the health of your animal. Nor do I want to be bothered while grocery shopping. Or have some mother put their child in a cart a dog has been sitting in after fee fee has been sitting there. Leave your pet home if you are going to be where food is. That’s all I care about.
@@C.Church that’s discusting and I don’t blame you actually. And there is also a difference between a service dog and what people claim to be “emotional support”. Even the Americans with Disabilities state this: . Americans With Disabilities cites that emotional support dogs or animals do not have the training to do specific tasks in assisting a person with disability or impairment, unlike service animals. Hence, the pets may not be allowed to accompany their owner in public places ie. restaurants, stores, hotels
Deeply sickened over what the woman endured. No different than attacking someone in a wheelchair. People need to stop being ignorant. We know it won’t change look at racism.
@@bookmouse2719 The racist card? Wasn't aware that someone was talking about this woman's race or saying that her dog was a race. Yes, I know what you really mean. You have a problem with someone claiming discrimination of any kind. Tell you what. If you ever develop a disability of some kind and need some kind of accommodation for it, we'll see what you think then.
That STORE should have gotten security and held that man until police arrived!! He should have been arrested for attempted theft of a service dog!! If he doesn't like service dogs, stay home and get someone else to do your shopping!! This woman has a RIGHT to have a service dog and this man needs to be told that by a JUDGE!!! At the very least this male (male bullies are NOT men!!) should have been heavily fined!!
Agreed. Should have called the Popo (however the odds of them shooting the dog are high) that way the store can say - We’re following the law, one person does not represent our business. Instead they have a potential for lost business and a law suit.
She is right about that being like taking someones wheelchair. Why do you think service dogs fly free on airplanes? Because they are medical equipment. You wouldn't charge someone extra to bring their oxygen tank on or a wheelchair, because they need those things. I had a mom with two kids ask me to leave a restaurant cause my service dog, a doberman, was a threat to her family. No, screw you. My dog isn't doing anything but laying there. You move or you leave the restaurant.
You realize, an actual person that needs a service dog isn't some "entitled dipshit special snowflake princess". If you're deaf and don't have anyone to speak sign language with to tell you what's going on, and a fire starts blazing, you don't know what's happening, and your dog would save you. In the case of the woman in this news story, she can't leave the house without her dog. What would you propose she do if she goes out to eat? Leave her dog outside the restaurant for an hour +? No! That would be stupid. And if you think ALL dogs shed hair, bark, and bite, you're retarded. Here's 5 dog breeds I can think of off the top of my head that don't shed. 1. Maltese 2. Shih Tzu 3. Tibetan terrier 4. Brussels griffon 5. Portuguese water dogs For the other 2, Just train your dog that barking and biting isn't ok, and problem solved. And this is just talking about normal "pet" dogs. A certified service dog, (or any animal for that matter.) will be trained not to bark, bite, or generally do anything that could hurt anyone. Do you think they just give out dogs willy-nilly and say they're service animals? No! All your reasons for thinking people shouldn't have service animals are complete shit that logic quickly and mercilessly destroys. If you come up with a fake argument, and resort to insulting me in response to this, then I will be convinced you are mentally challenged.
@@WhoStoleMyNachos Bernese Mountain dogs don't shed much, either. I have 2 that live in my neighborhood, and they're lovely to pet because I don't get fur all over my clothes.

@@Azishome Don't try to blame the dog for the attack. Sometimes its not their fault. Some strays fight to protect themselves. Others have diseases and should be put down if can't be helped. How is it any of the customer's business in the first place whether she has her dog with her in the store or not. If the customer had an issue, he should have gone to the manager of the store and let him sort it out rather than attacking this poor woman and trying to take her dog from her. The customer doesn't know why she needed the service dog. What if she had been blind? Or subject to seizures? How dare he try to interfere with her animal.
Was looking for this comment. Even if the other customer knew for a fact that she was faking a disability merely to take her spoiled-rotten pet into a store, it's not his right to even so much as bar her way, let alone assault her. Even if he were an _employee_ I'd say he wouldn't be entitled unless he had a manager's permission; as a customer, his only legitimate recourse was to report her to an employee or the manager.
@@howardsmith9342 Sadly stores like the big box marts and regional chain usually have the policy of without a vest all a store employee can ask is "is that a service dog" and if "yes" then full stop and and walk away nothing else.
WTF! The most disturbing part of this story to me was, that the man who was offended by the dog being in the store got other patrons on HIS side! WHAT!? It's a sad day for humanity when a crowd of people gangs up on someone with a disability even if she didn't have a disability and was a trainee of service dogs, people who need help navigating day to day life need their dogs and as decent human beings we should appreciate and respect that.
I get offended when parents allow their little kids to run around yelling and screaming in the aisles, pushing those damned little carts around and running into people or allow them to have temper tantrums in public. But we all have to put up with that. I've yet to see a dog in a store, service or just pet, do any of that. Yet they offend people in a store.
barbara dufner - The most disturbing part is forming an opinion based strictly on one side of the events. This 2 year old dog is a Service Dog "In Training".🙄 I guarantee the dog was not behaving in an appropriate manner. It may have jumped or lunged...who knows? But a group of people do not tell a lady to get her dog out for no reason. Obviously. Of course, females don't ever consider facts.🙄
A service dog is literally a medical tool. It is a crime to distract them or cause harm to their owners. Yes, it is a dog and yes it is a part of their owner's family, but that dog has a job. They cannot be distracted as you don't know why that dog is needed. Be it seizures, fainting spells, etc. You are putting a person's life at risk because you want to pet the dog, your disgusting kids want to pet the dog, you don't think the dog belongs there or whatever other reason you have to distract a WORKING, MEDICAL EQUIPMENT ANIMAL. It isn't hard to teach your kids to leave dogs (or ponies or whatever else animal is being used as a service animal) alone. It isn't hard to ignore them. It isn't hard to let another person live their life without fear you're going to be a risk to them. You also don't have any right to know what disability a person has to require a fucking service dog. Just ignore them, keep walking, stay out of their way and control your brats.
I would lime to emphasize something you said. It is literally a crime to interfere with a service animal preforming their job. It isn't a civil violation but a criminal one. It is considered assault. Now of course no one would go after a curious child or even an adult who listened when told to please leave the animal alone. But the man in this story could have wound up in handcuffs if the woman had called the police and pushed the issue.
+Tirnanog i'm sorry you can't have children. must be hard having shriveled ovaries.... wait, it's not that you are barren, it's that nobody wanted kids with you. oh well, take your frustration out on youtube, but that won't get you any closer to motherhood.
On my job at a halloween store one year, these people brought two """"service dogs"""". They were running around, barking at people, knocking stuff down, not trained AT ALL, and the owners werent stopping them. This was a full sized poodle and a pomeranian. We couldnt say anything, of course, because they were "service dogs". People NEED to be fined for abusing the system.
Are you sure it wasn't an emotional support animal? ESA's are not regulated at all, you can get fake licenses online. Businesses actually do have a right to deny entry to ESA's. ESA's do not have to go through specialized training and are not covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act. You can learn more here: www.servicedogcertifications.org/emotional-support-animal-laws/
@@jennislater8299 emotional support animals is the biggest load of bullshit to hit since y2k, they should be regulated the same as service animals and HIPAA laws need to be changed to where the animal must possess and show credentials. Actually YES you can ask a handler to take their dogs out of the store. ADA is very clear that a service dog MUST be well behaved and under the control of the handler. If either is not true, you can DEFINITELY ask them to leave without fear of repercussions.
A disorderly customer, whether disabled or not. can always be refused service and asked to leave. If they refuse, that is what police and private security are paid to take care of. Entire families have been escorted out of stores because of the behavior of their children.

My grandmother has a service dog for her oxygen. She has trouble breathing otherwise. In the last year though she's kind of become the service human. The pup has been having sesures when she gets too hot. Shes only 8, but now relies on my grandmother to keep her cool and safe. They work for eachother now. Grandma keeps her cool and safe and helps through sesures, and gives her meds. And the pup helps my grandmother when her breathing gets labored due to lack of oxygen.
@@sandrasharp2934 oh she loves her dearly. She's been worried though many times that she will wake up and her pup will be gone. Things as of right now are good, but the pups meds had to be uped again a few months ago. Still my grandmother will do everything she could have done prior. Even play pokemon Go(I play with her when I'm able to get to her place). Usually though after about 8 or 9 years the service dog is retired, but she's not been due to her own medical problems. It's a way to keep an eye on her.
Someone actually tried to take a disabled girls wheel chair so "her little angel can sit and she deserves it". It pisses me off that there are people like that.
You’re ignoring what the actual problem was though: the dog. It was only a Service Animal IN TRAINING. It was not officially a Service Animal to the ADA’s regulations and she actually had no leverage here. Any business is not required to allow her to practice in/on their premises 🤷🏼♂️. The guy wins and the lady loses.
I'm almost completely blind in one eye and gave up on training my service dog because people were so unkind about it that I started to get severe anxiety.
I am glad to see so many people speak up about this issue. I and my young daughter encountered a woman and her service dog at our family doctor's. I had taught my daughter not to touch stranger's pets because you never know the animal's disposition. My daughter was very young, 3 or 4 yrs and she almost reached out to pet the woman's service dog, but she must have remembered the rules and she pulled back her hand and turned to me and asked. I didn't know the rules about service dogs, but I told her the rule about unknown animals and told her to ask the woman (who engaged in eye and verbal contact). The woman was kind and explained "No, because he's a service dog and on duty." We both respected the woman's wishes. After about fifteen minutes, she spoke to her dog briefly, and turned my daughter and I, giving my daughter permission to talk to and pet her dog. The dog was so friendly and beautifully trained. The woman thanked my daughter and then me, and explained about service dogs and how to tell which dogs are service animals. We all learned much that day by being respectful to each other. My little girl and I were educated that day, but I wish we had known already because little ones and naive older ones can make a huge mistake with these working animals who are partners, not just pets.
The fundamental problem with touching a trained service animal at work isn't that they might be dangerous. It's that you distract them from their job, which is protecting someone. Touch a working service animal and you endanger that person. Animal companions that aren't trained service animals re social animals with the same instincts. They may think of a stranger touching them incautiously as an attack on them or their "pack".
It doesn’t matter if the man thought it was a fake service dog. If you thought someone was faking being paralyzed, taking their wheelchair from them would still be just as malicious.

The store manager was not the one to okay a pet into the store. The customer was right to have a fit, because only SERVICE DOGS are allowed in the store. If the manager allowed every dog and cat into the store that was not trained service animals, he could get into trouble with the health department. A dog will pee at any spot in the store, thus insuring a health hazard. You should have not taken the dog with you in the vehicle, should have left it at home where it belongs, not in a grocery store. Trained service dogs serve a purpose to help its owner with his/her health issue. A pet dog belongs at home. Next time, leave it at home.

"There's not a lot of regulations when it comes to service dogs." There's a whole federal guideline put out under the ADA. It's not HIPPA that protects service dogs and their owners, it's the ADA. Does no journalist do research anymore?
The HIPPA laws are factored in because whatever the medical condition, you CANNOT ask the person. Veterans carry certification papers to the dogs training.
So tragic!! People are just crazy!! If the dog is performing a service that's all there is to it. The line is crossed if a dog is creating a disturbance (aggression, destruction etc). Otherwise, the dog has a job to do and that's it. Doesn't matter the breed, the size, the age etc. I know she was upset but my advice to people is, if a worker is denying access and doesn't want to budge, you keep calm, walk out and call 911. Let the police handle the situation (also ask for a senior officer so you're dealing with someone who has handled these situations in the past and is familiar with the law). Don't leave, just step outside and wait for police
This happened me at Christmas Eve 2020, I stood my ground and I was screaming at the guy. The guy tried to tell me by law I have to show him my paperwork and that only service dog out there is for the blind according to the ADA. He said vicious dogs and mean little people aren't aloud in the store. When I said he is a seizure alert dog, the guy had the nerve to say let me it then. I'm like yea I can call upon the seizures gods and have one anytime I want it doesn't work that way dude. Three managers came raising over and escorted the guy that was harassing me out and had trespassed. All the managers and security personnel at the store know me and my service dog. In fact the manager ask us a few times if we can help train employees on what to do around service dogs. I was more then willing too. Honestly I will turn into a mean little person if you touch my service dog without ask, ok a kid I get adult no.

If you need a service dog, and if the doctor agrees that it would help you, then yes definitely get a service dog! There will always be rude, ignorant, and stupid people in this world, but do not let them affect your quality of life. As someone who is trapped in their house I feel the same way. A dog could alert me to an attack but likewise I'm taking the risk that someone is going to lose their mind ate because they think my dog isn't trained and I don't know how more agoraphobic that's going to make me (I have agoraphobia due to my illness that makes going outside risky). I don't want that to get worse. It's bad enough already.
Only the young-ish adults. This newest and really young generation seems to be much more compassionate than the previous one, from what I've seen, thank God. Afmedic85 - I once watched an elderly woman in line before me take a shit on the floor of the local Rite Aid pharmacy without even knowing it (yep, leaked out her pant leg). Other than the fact that dogs don't wear pants, what's your point?
Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) makes it legal for people with disabilities to be able to have their dogs with them anywhere. The dog does NOT need a license of any kind. The dog does NOT have to be in a vest of any kind. Your dog can be trained by their owner to do these tasks. People are only allowed to ask if it is a service dog?....and what task does the dog perform for you? The dog DOES have to be non aggressive and is not allowed to misbehave. They are allowed to bark, if that is an alert to their owner. People are not allowed to interfere with a service dog in any way.
Betta Blue yes but, a service dog IN TRAINING does not have public access rights under ADA law. Therefore should not have been in the store except by permission or if all pets were allowed. And yes the man is still a jerk.
Not everywhere. Any public place a service dog is allowed to go. Private places ( like a home or party ) the owner can tell you the dog isn’t allowed..but if the owner tells you to not bring something you need like your service animal then you should forget them and leave them
There’s no “tests” for a service dog. You don’t have to have the dog go do tests. They need to be able to do their job. Like responding to a seizure..or reminding someone to take their medication. On top of that the owner needs to train the dog to behave in public and teach them right from wrong and to ignore other people. They can behave like a service dog in public but if they don’t do something for their owner who has a disability or illness then they aren’t a service animal..their isn’t any real registration or tests that mean anything
It doesn’t matter. First off just because someone can’t tell what’s wrong with you just by looking at you doesn’t mean you have to explain yourself. He doesn’t need to know why you have the dog there. As long as you have everything that’s required then that’s all that matters!!! Not what’s wrong not what kinda of dog it is!!! No I do not have one myself. I do have a lot of dogs and they are a big help because I have a lot of things wrong with me but I don’t really go anywhere or anything so I don’t do the service thing. However if I wanted to then it’s my choice and my doctors or who ever else who have to talk to do it. If someone like him had the same problems as me or someone else who needs help then they would change the attitude!!!!
When I was in Germany (30 years ago) there were restaurants and other businesses where you could take your dog but you couldn't take your kids. I wish America was more like that. It's obvious who the animal is in this situation.

There used to be a blind woman who rode the same bus with me. She had a yellow Lab as her guide dog. One old fool who got on this bus would always pass the dog and slap it over the head saying, "Hey, doggy, doggy, doggy!' That really burned my a-s. Just as bad are parents who get on the bus with their brats who immediately want to roughhouse with the dog and the parents do nothing. Didn't anybody ever tell them that this animal is on duty and they should never touch it?
Just an observation to what she said, 'it's because people abuse the system, is what made this man re-act this way to her dog' No he was being an Immature Bully, Its' not his business why you have a service animal nor anyone else's. He's an ass and probably always has been. I'm sorry you had to deal with this!
R Vandenburg I thought the same. He’s bullying her because he knows that she won’t put up a fight. A coward bully. What a sorry excuse of a person, don’t you think?
R Vandenburg actually that’s what’s happening a lot in our world today. People are getting influenced by the media and that sometimes makes them make dumb assumptions. Like I remember one time seeing a news video about a mom complaining about an airport security system for doing a pat down on her and her son. Like that’s basic procedure and after 9/11 they’ve become even stricter. Before everyone thought that service dogs were completely okay but now that there are people who abuse the system people are starting to think that any service dog they see is fake. They don’t know if it’s fake or not but now that the people who fake it are becoming more in the known that makes them even more paranoid. I’m not trying to justify this guys actions or the people who abuse the system at all but the fact that you’re so willing to assume what a person is regularly like just because of one incident they had?? I’m sorry but I just couldn’t believe this at all.
Exactly whenever I see a service dog, I never assume that the person is abusing the system. If anything I might be curious what kind of medical issue that individual might have. Cause I do have a lot of compassion for people with medical disabilities. The guy was just some asshole who was on a power trip.
I have a close friend who uses a service dog. These people who think they're being helpful by "making sure" it's a real service dog and not one of the fakers are honestly the worst kinds of people she has to deal with. And I relate because I also have a disability (partial sight) and people are _obsessed_ with proving that I'm "not really blind", to the point of getting angry and nearly assaulting me. Honestly, I don't care if there are a ton of people out there pretending to be blind. (and there really aren't) I'd rather that than be interrogated by the disability police when I'm trying to mind my own business. Disabled people legitimately live in fear of disability policing
Having someone try to take your service dog really is like someone trying to take your wheelchair, I should know since I need both. And the feeling when someone is trying to intimidate you and make you leave because they aren’t happy being near what you need to function every day is indescribable. I’m fortunate in Texas there are laws protecting service dog owners from harassment that are actually enforced and it is never been an issue here but in Maryland it certainly was in many many places. I’m so sick of these people that take advantage of the service dog regulations, or should I say lack of regulations, they are making life more of a hell for those of us who really do need our SDs just because they want to take their puppy everywhere or not be charged extra for a plane or hotel.
alpha 1997 since service dogs are legally considered medical equipment, it is the exact same technically. The ADAs rule of thumb is, if a wheelchair is allowed somewhere then so is a service dog. For me personally, both my wheelchair and service dog are equally important to mitigate my disability as best possible.
Farrah Ray can some one move with out a service dog? Yes. they are far from the same 😂 comparing metal to a dog is the stupidest thing ive ever heard 😂 sadly its not the 1st time
alpha 1997 You can call it stupid all you want but in the United States of America they are legally considered the same thing because they are both medical equipment. I’m not going to argue with someone that is going to laugh at me because they think they know what I need to function better than I do. I really hope that you never need either a wheelchair and/or a service dog, good day to you.
Farrah Ray bye person that needs to relie on an animal 😂 an when people start rideing dogs to get around then it will be the same thing 😂 comparing metel to an animal. Cant get any dumber 😂😂

I see ads teaching people how to get their animal registered as an emotional support pet all the time, this is doing such a disservice to the people who actually need service animals for legitimate reasons
I have a little boy and have been teaching him that no matter what we never interact with a servos dog. Because we want to make sure their orwneris safe while they are out so means dogs can't be bothered.
It's probably a good thing I wasn't at this store. I'd help this lady out. She shouldn't have to worry about anyone being abusive towards her or her SD. There are way too many fake ones out there, but that's no excuse to treat any SD or their person this way. What ever happened to respecting others anymore?
L Whitby if you have a clue what a service dog is about and when they are around, you can see they are trained. They stay calm in all situations and have not one ounce of aggression in them. Non-service dogs have no training, they bark, they are out of control and some can be aggressive towards people and other animals. These are just a couple ways to tell. There are so many different duties these dog do for their owners, so maybe you should do a little research yourself and then you will be able to pick out the fakes too. I've researched and been around SD's so that's how the fuck I know.
Yeah we have people that have a therapy dog but it barks all day and goes after people in an apartment complex of all things because snowflakes are allowed to do whatever they want or they will have a tantrum like a 3 year old not every dog is a therapy dog just cause you say so
It's because people lie about needing service dogs too often. I remember a woman took her dog to this festival and the dog got loose and took off running all over. She called and called for it to come back chasing it around. Took her a good 20 minutes to get him. Now on the other hand my aunt is legally blind and has an amazing service dog. It can learn up to 2,000 words. Her's knows left, right, 360, 180, etc. Pretty amazing. And they don't just place you with any dog either. They flew her out to the training facility where she stayed 1 month to get to know the dog and train with the dog. They make sure the dog is compatible with you.
@@WilfBond55 The woman interviewed said the same thing - that some people are pretending they have service dogs, ruining it for the rest. People are taking semi-trained companion animals, slapping on a vest and demanding access.
No one "caused" that man to do anything other than himself. He was 100% responsible for his decision to try to regulate another customer's behavior and attempt to steal their service animal. "Fraudulent service dogs" is not the cause of this. That man thinking he had any right to tell anyone else what to do was.
Majestic Wolf Girls ADA states that a service dog is not required to be vested no matter what the task it is trained for. A vest is a courtesy for the general public. No labels are required.
Unfortunately having a vest on means absolutely nothing. Tens of thousands are purchased on ebay by those that want to take their animals where they don't belong. Legit service animal owners should be happy when they are challenged as a small price to pay to root out those that abuse the ADA.
There's no "debate". Don't touch anyone or their dog without permission.
The gentleman told me I COULD pet him, (never DO so WITHOUT permission, people!) and stated that he was a "Redbone." (Coon Hound) Being a "Lab" man myself, (Labrador Retrievers) I STILL have high regard for ANY good looking, quality dog--words HERE can't describe how AWESOME that Service Dog In Training looked--well, maybe "magnificent"---and he WAS... lol

Yeah this lady is the epitome of entitled and stupid
That reminded me of the Basset Hound towing a wheelchair at the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco. Bassets aren’t common service dogs.
Or that they see someone abled when the handler has a legitimate disability under the ADA. 🙄
So the lady is legit deaf to frequencies like sirens or crosswalks. Totally justifiable reason to have a service dog. Case closed.
My point is she should never have to explain.
Exactly
@@GregHamiltonHasaGoogle hell no it will cost those of us who need a service dog but on a fixed income. Plus it'd cost the taxes to go up in order to pay more people to do the certification.
(Note this isn't asking WHAT disability you have)
2. What work is this animal trained to perform? (I.e. what is it supposed to do for you?)
Both are designed to give employees a way to recognize that the animal is working, and what it should look like if the animal is currently performing it's function, and the person may need assistance or something.

1. Is that a service dog
And if yes
2. What task or tasks is it trained to provide.
If they answer with “it just makes me feel better” or anywhere along the lines of them saying emotional support, they are fake. If they slap down a card and say that’s proof, it is not as no national registry is in existence and the ADA does not recognize them.

It's actually federal law that people can't harass a service animal here in the US. This man should definitely be held accountable.

No properly trained assistance/service dog would com near you there. they are properly and strictly trained not to. assume this is the case in US. in the UK you would potentially be commiting moren than one offence by putting a velcro tag or a coat on an pet dog ad trying to pass itnof as a workijg dog, say in a restuarant. in the UK you can have confidence in the dog ifnyoumpolitely askmthe hqndler. All of us would welcome your polite interest and probably introduce you to the dog if you wanted. Be guided by the handler. i certainly welcome polite interest.
It is perfectly fine to tell the handler that their dog is cute or that they are a good boy or girl. That's perfectly acceptable and polite. But that's IT. Keep walking! Don't talk to the dog, don't touch the dog, don't maintain eye contact with the dog.
My FOUR YEAR OLD knows better. She asks ME first, doesn't just lunge at random dogs! She looks at me and asks, "Mommy, can I pet the dog?" And then, if the dog is a service dog, I tell her no and we move on! Teach your kids!

idil ali perfectly stated!!!
Strangely a lot of people do. I deal with people like that all my life.
CavedMan Jim
Though if it isn’t by law then it is imposing your will.
CavedMan Jim m
I think since Social Law is constantly changing and is different for each person then it can’t really be used in situations since it’s not official or written. Since the guy you are talking to could have a very different view point. It’s basically what you think because of it being different and unofficial. So I think that is imposing your will.
It will probably take centuries for our political system to advance though it going to happen there were times when we had one party and times when we had three. It’s going to change eventually.

It's just too bad some owners can't control the animals. I was on Lowe's once and a man with a HUGE dark gray dog (probably a lab mixed with something) was walking around the outside garden near me. I avoided them. Then I was in the trees section (where they put them on pallets with an aisle to go down, but it was narrow and loads of foliage crowding the space). And this manchild decides his best route to get to the front of the garden section isn't going up one aisle over, he decides to come crowd into the aisle I'm in with his horse dog. I had to scootch over and this dog (who I don't blame) begins nosing and sniffing and rubbing his snot snout on me. I was furious and scolded the manboy who then threw a tantrum "It's just a dog! It's just a dog, GEEEEZ! It's just a DOG!" He had no sense of other people's entitlement not to have dog snot wiped on them. In his world, dog snot is like water from the faucet, like the air we breathe, as in "dog snot is part of daily life".

But we all have to put up with that. I've yet to see a dog in a store, service or just pet, do any of that. Yet they offend people in a store.
barbara dufner - The most disturbing part is forming an opinion based strictly on one side of the events. This 2 year old dog is a Service Dog "In Training".🙄
I guarantee the dog was not behaving in an appropriate manner. It may have jumped or lunged...who knows? But a group of people do not tell a lady to get her dog out for no reason.

Check your spelling Kitty Cat
Dakota Showalter check her spelling? What word are you suggesting that she checks? She could definitely use a lesson on proper punctuation, however, her spelling is average. Sure she may have used the same word twice, and her sentence structure could be better but it is not an English test. Wow.
@@Tata-iu3fy Well.... It's not like it's impossible to understand. I would change the "she can have her dog in the store" to "she CAN'T have her dog in the store", just to cut out any confusion.
If I was standing there and he attempted to take her service dog he would most likely have still been there when the police arrived.

"There's not a lot of regulations when it comes to service dogs." There's a whole federal guideline put out under the ADA. It's not HIPPA that protects service dogs and their owners, it's the ADA. Does no journalist do research anymore?
No.
Casey Wolfe I thought that you didn’t have to do anything with ADA.
Can you give like an example?
I’m really confused lol.
The journalist is right HIPPA protects the human from not having to disclose the reason why they have a service dog.
The HIPPA laws are factored in because whatever the medical condition, you CANNOT ask the person. Veterans carry certification papers to the dogs training.
HIPPA is for the human's medical records. More know for that purpose, but doesn't involve SD
woah woah woah they tried taking her dog, what is wrong with people leave people alone please
The most effective thing for a woman or man to scream in public when attacked is HELP ME! I'M BEING ATTACKED!! That will make most "Carrions" back off.
He could have easily been looking at a lawsuit had he taken the dog away and she had an attack of some kind that the dog couldnt alert her to (He didn't even know what she had.) People like this is why im scared to get a service dog for my narcolepsy/cataplexy...
I understand your concern but you need a service dog to help you gain confident and help you through your condition. There will be times when people are so rude and arrogant that they don’t stop and think about the person.
Please don’t let it stop you gaining a service dog that will help you through your problems but mostly be your best friend and companion.
If you need a service dog, and if the doctor agrees that it would help you, then yes definitely get a service dog! There will always be rude, ignorant, and stupid people in this world, but do not let them affect your quality of life. Also, if management is not helping or is going against the law, do not be afraid to call the police. They are there to help you.
Hey..my Blue Nose/Mastiff is a SD..for my Narcolepsy (among my other problems) & if someone has a problem with his breed & tries to bar him then I call the cops...a person who has a SD NEEDS to be able & WILLING to not 'just let it slide'..
She said she needs a service dog because she can't hear computer sounds like beepers. I don't know what attack that would ensue though

Main Street Boxer ....thanks for the correction!
Betta Blue yes but, a service dog IN TRAINING does not have public access rights under ADA law. Therefore should not have been in the store except by permission or if all pets were allowed. And yes the man is still a jerk.
Service animals HAVE TO be TRAINED and pass all tests. I dont know what world you live in but as a dog owner myself you need to get some education.
Service dog, the title says it all a dog trained to help individuals in need of service

SissyFlower5 that is horrible! I’m so sorry that you have to go through that. There are some real shitty people in this world.
Farrah Ray its nothing like trying to take a wheel chair but ok
alpha 1997 since service dogs are legally considered medical equipment, it is the exact same technically. The ADAs rule of thumb is, if a wheelchair is allowed somewhere then so is a service dog. For me personally, both my wheelchair and service dog are equally important to mitigate my disability as best possible.

I really hope that you never need either a wheelchair and/or a service dog, good day to you.

It's probably a good thing I wasn't at this store. I'd help this lady out. She shouldn't have to worry about anyone being abusive towards her or her SD. There are way too many fake ones out there, but that's no excuse to treat any SD or their person this way. What ever happened to respecting others anymore?
Katz totally. ..i hate nosy ppl who have NO CLUE
You see "way too many" "fake" service dogs? Really? How the fuck do you KNOW they're "fake"?
L Whitby if you have a clue what a service dog is about and when they are around, you can see they are trained. They stay calm in all situations and have not one ounce of aggression in them. Non-service dogs have no training, they bark, they are out of control and some can be aggressive towards people and other animals. These are just a couple ways to tell. There are so many different duties these dog do for their owners, so maybe you should do a little research yourself and then you will be able to pick out the fakes too. I've researched and been around SD's so that's how the fuck I know.
But it is true that now a days we have a lot of people taking non service dogs to stores and restaurants.
Doesn’t give that man or anyone else the right to verbally harass her and try to take her dog.
Thaat's a legitimate complaint--but not the subject here. This is about someone trying to take a service dog that's in a store for a very good reason.
Yeah, I think the story tried to conflate two very separate issues.
So damn typical of men 🤨
Here's a solution: STOP SELLING SERVICE PET COSTUME FOR HALLOWEEN AND ONLY ALLOWS ACTUAL SERVICE PET TO WEAR THEM.
Makuro Shinya vests are not required to be worn. Just so you know.
Service animals aren't pets. Just letting you know.
+Robert Moore Mobility dogs may need vests
Majestic Wolf Girls ADA states that a service dog is not required to be vested no matter what the task it is trained for. A vest is a courtesy for the general public. No labels are required.
+Robert Moore I'm not saying they need them by law. I'm saying they may need one to help them perform their job.
The man should have continued his shopping and minded his business!!
Unfortunately having a vest on means absolutely nothing. Tens of thousands are purchased on ebay by those that want to take their animals where they don't belong. Legit service animal owners should be happy when they are challenged as a small price to pay to root out those that abuse the ADA.
