The WORST Analog Horror Series Ever (in my opinion)

- This controversial, disturbing analog horror series has been making the rounds for some time, and I'll explain why some people felt really strongly that this series was so tasteless and edgy.
urbanSpook's series is extremely graphic and doesn't skimp out on the shocking details, which attracts claims that he's getting off on it in some sense, which are probably true

this is the best explanation ive seen of this series yet
Honestly a great generalization of the series. Urbanspook is like that one kid that makes super edgy jokes at all the wrong times that nobody actually likes put gives him a pity giggle.
@@bananabanana1 To quote PointlessHub, Urbanspook is like that guy who stumbles on the stage on an open-mic night, says they’re a master of satire, then says the n-word. Just make him into a master of horror instead and replace the n-word with a real-life photo of a dead baby shown through a Powerpoint presentation, and you'll get Urbanspook.
bot recycled comment
what ticks me off is that lots of the pictures are genuinely terrifying, but there’s SO many of them shown rapid-fire that they loose any actual impact for the story
if i remember correctly, urbanspook made/makes the art first and *then* adds the story to explain it. literally the jeff the killer approach to creating horror content
@@anonymous-rq2lhsure, it can be shocking, but just like with most repetition, it gets boring and monotonous.

FRRR. On their own, I genuinely think urban is a great artist and any arg that uses a lot of handmade art is appreciated since ai is so common. But sadly, the plot isn't as good :/
honestly, i think Urban just likes drawing disturbing shit, but wanted to add more to it. At least, that's how i believe it began, it would also explain why all of it is repetitive
i feel like most people defending urbanspook don't know the difference between gory horror and torture porn
Good point
I genuinely believe him and his defenders jack off to Guro.

"Juvenile" is definitely the best way to describe this series. It comes across as something an edgy middle schooler would write - all gore with no cohesive thought or story. Definitely something that they'd turn into the teacher and get promptly flagged for a counseling session.
“Jimmy, what the hell did you turn in into your teacher?”
I think the main problem with the whole series is that it feels like a kid trying to tell you a scary story, but they notice youre not really scared at all so they just start listing over the top "scary things" to get that reaction out of you. Theres not really much of a plot or deeper meaning, its just shock value
This is the perfect analogy. It's all attention grabbers, not actual talent.
Yeah, the stuff almost seems like something I could come up with when I was obssessed with creepy pastas as a 12 to 15-year-old but without the s3xual violence parts.
I think it's just him showing off his art, there's still story, still the same killers, the killings are connected, there's still talent, it's unsettling extreme horror, almost like splatterpunk
@@owen2576 yes but the story doesn't seem to be the main focus, as there's barely any developments made over the course of the series so far. Every episode is just formulaic and it really feels like the purpose is just to show off his art like you said and to make bad lazy shock horror

Police still have no clue how to find the culprit."
pretty much how it works in the series...
The implication from the line "three rabid hamsters in _each_ of his eye sockets" is far too subtle for this to be accurate. Somehow you accidentally (at least I assume) made something scarier than the thing you're mocking.

It doesn't make me wonder "gasp! why did the character do that?" It makes me wonder "ugh why did the author do that?"
Right? You know it's piss-poor horror art, when the artist's personal drama is easily a more "interesting" horror show than the art is, and you can barely care about the drama!
best summary
Ur actually so right
When it comes to making anything horror. That is my number one rule. If the reader is more disturbed by the author then they are the actual art then something is certainly wrong
Basically
"how is a picture taken by a kid a better lead than the police could get?"
I mean, police being incompetent is by far the most realistic thing in the series, if we're being honest.
Y’know, normally I’d call that amount of police incompetence comical, but I’ve seen real world cases where the police are equally oblivious
The police are too busy making analog horror videos to do their jobs.
The police waiting for someone else to get footage for them is way too accurate to where I live.

The biggest issue with how UrbanSpook portrays CSA (outside of just directly making merchandise off of his CSA character) is that it adds to the very rampant problem in rape/CSA horror, that being that by using it for just shock value rather than to tell a story or a narrative, it paints rape/SA/CSA, which are two very real travesties that can lead to years upon years of trauma and pain, if not literally suicide, as though it is just a fictional concept.
By essentially not taking matters such as rape, SA and CSA seriously and only adding it in to be like “LOOK! This female character in my horror story got RAPED! Isn’t that just so SCARRRYYYY!?!?!?!”, it paints that these real, legitimate crimes that happen to real life people are just fictionalized ideas that only exist to make people go “Wow, that’s really fucked up and spooky” and nothing else, rather than being able to sit down and think about how SA is actually horrifying and why you should sympathize with the victim because of their experience. This is also why it sucks that absolutely none of the characters in the story are written with any depth, and every character is basically just a NPC waiting to be made into some grossly graphic corpse.
TL;DR: The reason it’s bad to only include rape/SA/CSA in your narrative if it’s only to shock the viewer is because it gives off the notion that you, as well as your audience, only view rape/SA/CSA as fictionalized concepts that can be used to disturb the audience and make you seem “hardcore” when all you’re actually doing is being super fucking disrespectful.
i agree with your comment but the merchandise, art, etc. was all made before The Painter series started (except the "photographs", i believe)

the worst part? this actually has a neat setup. a killer who paints his victims and leaves them behind. the amount of careful planning that the killer would have to do combined with the police's inability to find them actually makes for an interesting story. but ofc they just decided to make it all shock value.
Its sad too, because the art is also legitimately good, but its context is so distasteful and lame that I cannot fully enjoy it. this could have been legitimately good if the creator wasn't a creep that thinks edginess is a good replacement for story.
"Serial killer who views themselves as an artist" is a fairly common thing in fiction, but a lot of the time it's a "killing is my art form" thing. THIS series has visual art, the "paintings," that the audience actually gets to see (and judge). There's a lot of potential there!
Is the art beautiful despite the awful subject matter? Is the art horrifying, but the artist thinks it's beautiful? Is the artist making horrifying art with the -intention- to horrify their audience? If the painting is meant to capture the act of murder, why not take photos or shoot a snuff film instead? If the murder is done for the sake of the art, what's driving that kind of obsession?
You could do a lot with that setup.
Yeah no thats what turned it off for me, too. At first I was like "what an interesting premise! I wonder what we'll learn about the killer's motivations through these horrible murders" and then it was just like NOPE! MORE MURDER!! ACTUALLY, TWO MURDERERS WITH MORE MURDERS ON TOP. I think using csa and pedophilia in horror is something that can be done in horror effectively. This guy just doesnt do it right. You dont really hate the murderer when this revelation is revealed, you start to hate the author. Using csa as a shock factor and not in a way that effectively shows the horrors of child abuse is cruel and disgusting
This. This topics are really heavy to discuss in terms of horror. And just thinking about the idea of it is sick. So using these sensitive topics for shock value is just triggering and disrespectful at this point especially if it's not done "right" in terms of horror story telling. This analog horror has lots of potential. But the child murders (killing in general) was just too much and without the actual story it wouldn't make any sense making the audiences more turned off.
Alice: Madness Returns is one example of it done effectively I think. Everything is implied which is more than enough to trigger an uncomfortable response in most people. The Dollhouse level is pure nightmare fuel, and it manages to be that way because of implications alone.
Children under the house handles this really well, because it's less for the shock factor and more to add to the tragedy of the victims.
I think “my eyes deceive” is a good one too
It’s especially hard to hate the murderer because the murderers are such…. nothing characters.
They’re just there killing people. Do we know anything about them? No! Do we know anything about any character? No! It’s such a nothing burger of a series
Something of note is that slugs has confirmed that Cory was not "r'd", and he says there are clues that suggest this isn't the case, but I think whats more likely is that he got upset at how much people were disgusted at the cory shit and just wanted to back down to make himself look like he's a better writer than he is
yeah it was absolutely just backpedaling to avoid further accusations of pedophilia
He wrote the shit about Cory's lower half being the half that was r'd. He knew what he was doing, and trying to say it wasn't the case is a backpedal tactic. He had the killer r'd Corey while looking at his sisters face. Dead or no, it's still rape.

You know the phase Creepypasta's went through when they were getting popular. Where every 14 year old just added shock and gore scenes into their story thinking it would make it scary and then rip off Ben Drowned tropes without understanding why those tropes worked in that story in the first place

This really typifies my major complaints with Analog horror: Why is this all on old VHS tapes? Like, the main artifacts of the series are the paintings, so the focus should be more on those. Analog horror really created a whole aesthetic within horror and other spooky media on TH-cam. There are some TH-camrs on here who will be talking about something that happened on TV in like 2013, but they'll throw some fake VHS scanlines on the video (this may be a copyright work around, but it always rubs me the wrong way). I feel like this series could have been good like 10 years ago, if it was set up as a blog, where someone was finding these paintings and having to link them to the actual crimes. I guess the modern version of that would be a reddit post, but I guess the creator wanted to show off their music too.
What got to me was horror videogames being made to look like PS1 or other old consoles and then adding VHS filters on top for no reason. I could understand if it's meant to be vintage gameplay recordings but it makes no sense in an actual game and ruins the immersion it could have had. Is that just how some young people think TVs worked before flatscreens?
On the topic of this series, I feel they could have added the analog aspect by having the paintings appear like scans of old police photos that were developed on film, while the video is regular digital, perhaps with font/formatting that makes it seem old. The blog idea really does seem like the best format though, especially if it was made to look like something from the 90s or like Ted The Caver. Could have potentially tricked plenty of people into thinking it's a real old forgotten site if done well.
@@chrisbeaumont4630 I get the feeling that most analog horror is made by people who are too young to even remember stuff like VHS tapes and the PS1. It would certainly explain the thinf you said about people adding VHS scanlines to games that are supposed to resemble 90s consoles. They think scanlines were a part of old TVs, not of the VHS tapes themselves.
You know what could drastically improve the "Two months old" bit? Simply removing that entire frame. Doing so would force the viewer to connect the dots themselves when the painting is shown, the realization that the victim was an actual baby hitting as hard as it possibly could.

About a month late to this party, but I know of a similar situation. There was a FNaF fan-game called Dormitabis that suffered from pretty much the exact same problem. It was promising in terms of initial presentation with interesting design, but when it came to actually trying to formulate a "story," all the writer did was throw in a bunch of gross-out garbage in a way that just made people mad because there was nothing to it other than being gross-out garbage. Then later a completely unassociated team rebuilt the mess from the ground up, removing the garbage and actually trying to make a story with rhyme and reason, then suddenly it became really good.
The lesson both Dormitabis and this analog horror series prove is that just slapping gross-out/shock after gross-out/shock is not writing, much less good writing, and pretending that everyone else is "dumb and over-sensitive" for hating it just makes you look like a complete idiot.
I think the thing that’s scariest to me in analog horror is that they leave things up to the imagination. Things like Mandela catalogue (which this seems greatly inspired by) describing the hanging corpse being unnaturally moved around but being so censored that we have a lot of wiggle room to picture it in whichever way is most disturbing to us. Or the backrooms barely giving us a glimpse of the “bacteria” and the only thing we have to go off is the protagonist in that moment saying “that’s not a fucking human.” Or when Walten Files describes things like “inside, it felt like every single part of her body was bleeding.” It doesn’t show the violence, it doesn’t describe it in detail, it’s left up to our horrid minds to fill in all the blanks leading up to the information we know.
Yeah I think very brief descriptions of the crime (name, date of the murder and an undetailed, clinical cause of death) along with just the paintings and the titles the painter gave them would have worked a lot better. Most news reports/police information about crimes go into very little detail but enough to get an idea. Could have left a lot up to the imagination that way and used the abstract artistic approach paintings allow to subtly reveal things about the killer and what actually occurred in each murder. I think the wasted potential is more frustrating than anything with this series, there are far worse attempts at analogue horror.
Maybe I'm just desensitized or some shit but it was so funny when Urban called his series "extreme horror" when the "horror" in question is just some goofy aah faces.
@German_Empire_ I mean yeah but at the very least other series have more going for them then just "BOO A RED FACE". Like sound design is a big part. The Walten Files employs sound design really well, at least for what it's going for and I love it for that. I honestly hate "Pigs" because the sound design is garbage. It's just noise.
@awkwardaidan the "goofy faces" were more than just jumpscares, the implications and sheer sickness and cruelty of the killer is what makes each one scary.
@@SK-ib5hi Yeah but that's kind of cheap imo. I'd like my horror to have a bit more substance than shock value and using my imagination to fill in the gaps and convince myself it's scary. I'd rather the creator put in the work to scare me and Urbanspook doesn't do that, at least for me.
@@SK-ib5hi shock value is pretty cheap and lazy tbh… you can’t just throw in a dead kid and expect me to be scared. it’s just gross. there’s no story beyond “dude kills a bunch of people, look how gruesome they are.” if the series did more than sound like a coroner’s report, then maybe it would be decent but it’s just a gore fest rn

I thought Urbanspook was making the point of not romantizing serial killers by making his fictional killer as evil and disgusting as possible to drive home the fact that these people should never be romantized or glorified, as this problem existed for a long time.
But Urbanspook just seems to be doing this out of shock value and The Poughkeepsie Tapes does a better job that making the message of not romantizing a killer.

For me Silent Hill is the gold standard for horror involving SA. The Abstract Daddy of SH2 is the perfect example, it’s VERY obvious what the monster is supposed to represent and it’s fucking horrifying and deeply disturbing but the game and story takes what happened to Angela VERY seriously. Angela’s abuse is not used just to shock you for the sake of shock, it’s a sad part of her character and the reason she’s ended up in the town. At no point does it feel exploitative despite the blatancy of it.

Friendly reminder that UrbanSlug’s response to valid and warranted criticism of his series from an amazing horror TH-camr, Pastra, was to make ableist and homophobic comments to them.

My main problem with this series is it seems disgustingly self indulgent in regards to the body horror. It’s like a wimpy homemade snuff film

Bro can’t accept that his series is just ass!
I think that's my issue here. It's gross and grotesque and unnecessary, but sometimes that's art and creation.
But not being able to take that and create stuff with the constructive criticism or even just mean criticism...man. thats where I get hung up.
The creator being a child about criticism is too much for my brain. Fuck it I don't care. That's my entire emotion for it. Just get bent at that point. I hate that kinda shit.
Not just that but if you look up his issues, hes got a pattern of both the r-word and p-word in his works.

I also find it weird and distasteful that his merch is composed of the victims. Like, yeah, they're not real, but when you add in the context on these images, it feels wrong, especially cory, Mae, and the hanging angel.
Like, imagine buying one of the 30$ shirts and telling your friends about it and mentioning that this image comes from a moment where a woman got SA by a horse drugged with viagra
Urban was harassed for an entire year by pastra and many others, he only flipped out and broke characger there because it was the last straw. He apologized for it too so it’s kinda redundant to mention that now.
the fact that the Chezzkids Archive literally broke character just to tell him to fuck off had me rolling 💀

As a writer, my main issue with the series is that we know nothing of the serial killer’s motivation. That could be changed in future uploads, but so far he just seems like a guy who likes killing for no reason. While there are some serial killers out there who are actually like that, even those types of killers have some form of reason or motivation as to why they even started in the first place. Right now, he is just a generic one dimensional villain.
my main issue with the story is that like, there’s no real pattern to the gruesome fates. like, okay, genital mutilation is not outside the purview of a serial killer, but like, the pig’s eyes? the fucking brick? there’s no characterization to the killer beyond he does paintings and is a twisted fucking cycle path, they dont feel like they were done by the same person, with wildly varying skill levels to what they would need to accomplish them.
Cycle path?
Yea- obviously not every single killer has a 100% consistent pattern to their killings, but none of these really feel very….consistent? Like the wax doll was stupid yea, but if he was more consistent with the idea of his killing being “art” other than just the paintings which don’t feel really relevant anymore other than for shock value
@@axolotlfairy2473 There are multiple killers if you pay attention to the series. Possibly 2 or 3 of them working together, which is why the murders may not be consistent.

I'm three months behind, but I'd still like to say that this is refreshing. Thank you-THANK YOU-for addressing the language used. I love horror, but kills my interest like writing that's sloppy/ignorant/etc.
I scare really easily but the moment I noticed some of the language/ grammar issues this ceased to scare me at all. I just find it icky tbh
15:28 A possibly dumb thought, but. One option to save the series could be finding out the killer made those tapes too, left them for the next victim to find, and oops. They uploaded it all. Ah well. This can be their last one.
And we could end on the killer recording an interrogation with the victim that uploaded all of the videos, asking them what they thought of his work, why he took the effort to upload the videos, finding this victim interesting. After all, most of the others just got horrified, never got deep enough into the videos to know if the videos were legitimately from the cops or not, if he even toyed with them with videos or paintings.. but this one was different.
And since they liked uploading the videos, why not contribute to their uploads with a final video?
Sure, it.. wouldn't fix the Cory thing. But it could be an interesting way to end it, as well as explain why it ended. 🤷♂️
This series was such a waste of a good and scary setup. I'm not usually into analog horror because I find most of it to be too much of the same but the art for this series is so well done it's a shame that the "story" doesn't go anywhere past, some murderer shows up and kills like 38 people and the police are too busy fucking around in the station to do anything about it.

@@Prostate_Doctor you'd be surprised at how many stupid police departments are out there with a lot of stupid police officers
@@German_Empire_ TBH I think they should have left that kill on the cutting room floor and just focused on making the series more realistic.
@@Prostate_Doctor honestly probably most of them. If you look at true crime and stuff (I used watch a bit but stopped becuase a lot of it feels very exploitative) there's a disturbing amount of cases that the police fuck up do to their incompetence. There's also a lot of cases where the cops do very little to nothing because the victims aren't ""the right people"
For instance, Jeffery dahmer was almost caught several times, but the cops ignored his suspicous activities because he killed a lot of gay men (or exculsivey gay men I don't exactly remember), and the cops didn't care about protecting marginalized people.
I imagine the entire police department sitting criss cross applesauce on the floor going "woaaaah" over and over during a slideshow of the paintings as the lead detective points a flashlight under his chin and spookily goes over the most disturbing details. That's the investigation in a nutshell.
This is exactly the issue that the Arkham games had with their background lore unlockables, especially Arkham City - they just couldn't stop taking things too far, so the stories just failed to be shocking it was just "And then Calendar Man/Joker/Whoever murdered 50 children in ways that are vaguely related to their gimmick" and it just gets boring, especially because there are moments where they actually have fun ideas, like Calendar Man is planning a thing on Halloween because tradition, and the last line in his story is "Damn you, Scarecrow ;_;" which is pretty funny. It just gets spoiled by the dumb edgy stuff.
This is the treason of the artist: a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain. -Ursula Le Guin
This series is just history repeating itself with early 2010's creepypasta. Where the authors would have their ocs kill, maim and assault people in the most over the top ways possible, often delving into topics such as SA for shock.
And - bare in mind - all said OCs would be unbelievably young (because it probably reflects how old the author was), further adding to the uncomfortable vibe

To be fair, a lot of the paintings are creepy as fuck. I’m a massive wimp myself, and those two close ups on the killer made me extremely antsy…but that’s all. I’m not truly scared, more fascinated with the art, and the fact that there is literally no story to speak of just turns me off of this even more. There really was only thought put into the shock value and that’s it.

Sorry to dredge this up on your video but urbanspook has an extremely offputting, odd fixation with pedophilia / sexual crime against women & children. Some of his oldest videos are about / center around pedophiles and he made tons of "jokes" about pedophiles, csa, etc.

Making a pedophile joke in itself is not weird or make you a pedo. But if that’s primarily the type of thing you talk and joke about just because? Then that is very strange.
I know this is video is 5 months old, but I think that a way to make the "not realistic police tapes" thing would be to make the story about an old research project that someone found. Again it fixes things like the police not doing an investigation, the low tier "writing" in the tapes, and gives it a little bit of character. It also bugs me that POLICE TAPES used for POLICE INVESTIGATIONS was fr just chilling in an apartment complex.
If he wanted things to be so over the top and grisly, why didn't he make the killer a sculptor or installation artist? Also an artist who considered killing his art would have a purpose behind it. They wouldn't be random acts of violence, he'd be exploring a specific idea or theme. He should have an artist statement to go along with his work at the very least. Not to sound like a snob but this creator would have benefited greatly from going to galleries, looking at real life exhibits and how they're displayed, and also researching how serial killers actually operate because even as a serial killer his character makes no sense. Maybe I'm not being charitable enough but this feels like someone who got all their ideas from movies and did no research beyond that.

Here’s the thing: the concept has legs. A possibility supernatural serial killer committing unspeakable acts, leaving disturbing artwork as a calling card, and stumping the police is a good idea; it just needs to be packaged right. You could do so much with it: actual police reports, public safety announcements, news broadcasts, even handheld camera footage of someone encountering the killer. You don’t even need strong central characters; Local58 and Gemini Home Entertainment don’t really have any, and they’re possibly the best analog horror series to date. The problem with UrbanSpook is that it’s samey. There’s only so many times you can hear that the killer butchered someone in a gruesome way and left behind a disturbing painting before it gets repetitive. The real strength of analog horror as a genre is that it allows for inventive storytelling, and UrbanSPOOK isn’t taking advantage of that.
and doesn't need to as graphic just unsettling
Analog horror shouldn’t have so much detail, it’s supposed to be disturbing, uncomfortable not down-right horrible & freakish
That’s why it’s so bad in general now, it allows you to be inventive. But a little creativity is too hard so it just devolved into tropes.
Thats honestly what pisses me off about The Painter. The idea of a serial killer that leaves disturbing artwork after they left the scene is a genuinely creepy and decent idea. It reminds of some some small real life examples of that in real life cases like how a couple SKs were found to have some artwork stashed away of their victims. Supposedly the Black Doodler that was never caught was a serial killer that artistically depicted his victims.
The idea is a interesting one and could work but UrbanSlug did not focus on doing anything with a artistic serial killer evading the police, no instead he just focused on going into disturbing graphic detail in text on the deaths over and over again which got samey and monotonous really quickly even if you ignore the more controversial SA elements. I actually think not having much displayed text at all and what happened to the victims and just having the images being attached to a heavily censored police report would of sold the concept enough along with PSAs and maybe some camera footage. Your brain would fill the gaps in that something really awful happened to these people just by seeing the art alone of the aftermath.
Also like, have a detective or a survivor that doesn't die in 5 seconds after they are introduced. I am not that big of a fan of Mandela Catalogue but at the very least the overarching story has some actual characters and not just a dispenser of horror in the killers and no characters to be seen.
What’s worse is that, because this guy did it, the story is now just gonna be this. You can’t copyright the idea of a serial killer leaving art of their victims behind, but good luck producing an analogue horror along these lines without starting some controversy.
