Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710-1784), the eldest son of Johann Sebastian, excelled as organist at Dresden's Sophienkirche. He impressed not only on the organ but also at aristocratic gatherings. This flute sonata, from his Dresden years, was only late credited to Wilhelm Friedemann. The slow movement showcases the high standard for flute set by virtuosos like Buffardin and Quantz. Rooted in the baroque, it hints at emerging empfindsamkeit, galant, and pre-classical styles.
