      Yeah, it definitely wasn't what I was expecting. It's just not nearly as refined. There are some nice ideas, but it reeks of an ultra low budget.

    I would agree with your implicit point that Taito bungled the opportunity of a lifetime on the Genesis, or, more broadly, in the 16 bit era; I'd just add that if you made a video about every Taito game _on the Master System and Game Gear_ -by contrast- you'd have a fairly positive opinion of their contribution to the 8-bit era.

  • @roberto1519
    @roberto1519 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You nailed it in the Darius segment, basic a 1:1 port (not counting wider display, that is), without the limited rom size and tight release schedules of the day, not only the Genesis, but the SNES and even the 8-bit consoles would benefit a LOT from not having such shortcomings. It's to show that their base hardware were really capable of doing so much more we were used to.

    • @InglebardGaming
      @InglebardGaming  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, the Genesis in particular I feel was limited by the small rom sizes devs had to use in its first couple of years. Since the SNES came along two years later, it didn't really have that issue to the same degree the Genesis did. I'm not quite sure why some later arcade ports weren't a little better on both platforms, by then it was probably more development times and budgets that played the biggest role.

    • @roberto1519
      @roberto1519 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@InglebardGaming True, it was common for the SNES to have a minimum of 8Mb roms at least. The NEO GEO was what it was, though, due to it having expensive, but vast amount of space compared to anything else at the time, SNK ports to the 16-bit consoles are severely cut down, but they'd be much more impressive if there were no such cart limitations to them.

    • @ostiariusalpha
      @ostiariusalpha ปีที่แล้ว

      @@roberto1519 More impressive certainly, but would they have sold as well at $90 vs $60? Extra man hours and ROM capacity would've pushed the cost up pretty quickly back then.

    • @roberto1519
      @roberto1519 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ostiariusalpha I agree, but you see, I was saying that almost always, we ended up with a cutdown product not due to technical limitations, as the stock hardware is quite capable, the NEO GEO example is that, if not for the large capacity cartridges, the console wouldn't look so impressive. It's not about costs, but no arguing it was the major aspect of it all.

    • @ostiariusalpha
      @ostiariusalpha ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@roberto1519 Of course. And if you think about it, the developer could have put in the resources to make a $70-$80 game. and still make a nice profit pricing it at $60-$70 because more copies would be sold. There was a real fear of committing to more quality when there was so much risk of poor sales though; which happened frequently. Little Samson was a big loss for Taito in Europe and the U.S., despite its obvious high quality. Dragon Quest II/III/IV basically ruined Enix' American branch due to poor sales as well.

    You're going to have a love-hate relationship with _Dahna: Megami Tanjou_ on the Genesis -and it is completely inevitable that your love of Rastan will draw your eye in that direction sooner or later. My theory: that whole genre had a difficult time escaping from the gameplay assumptions of Irem's Kung Fu (and the PC Engine's China Warrior)… although it seems obvious to us today that these games should play like Double Dragon 1, I'd infer that many of the programmers were still looking at Irem's Kung Fu as their model for imitation.

    Rainbow Islands Extra's Extra Mode on the MD is also a port of the arcade's RI Extra, the only other port of Extra was to the FM Towns Marty over in Japan. The sad part is, the Extra Mode in the MD port behaves more internally like the original RI, and not EXTRA at all. In the arcade original, you could get the gems in ROYGBIV order (that exact order gathering them, no deviations) and a silver door will appear in the boss rooms, inside those doors is a special item (permanent speed shoes, permanent double and triple rainbows, protection fairy, the ability to get 10,000 point money bags when hidden goodies are uncovered in levels, Big Book of Continues which lets you continue past island 7, wings to fly upward for the rest of the game, and a sideways show that lets you kill the final boss in 1 hit). After you collect the gems in the correct order, the next colored gem you collect before thee boss determines what items you get in the silver door rooms, meaning you could get the Big Book of Continues in Island 1 instead of having to wait till Island 7 to be able to retrieve it.
    Well Taito screwed up on the MD port, you can't manipulate the items anymore, meaning the game behaves like the regular Rainbow Islands. That Big Book of Continues I mentioned earlier, well it does squat in the MD port as you are still limited to the 7 credits max the game gives to you. Rainbow Islands Extra has never appeared on a console in the US, even it's last release on the PS2 was on Taito Memories, and PSP Taito Memories Pocket (the US version of the PSP compilation cut RI Extra out), both Japan releases.
    Taito did not develop Saint Sword, just released it, the game was done by some company called Cyclone Systems. Super Space Invaders 91 never made it to the SNES, SNES got a port of Space Invaders DX instead, minus the parody mode found in the arcade version, and the DX got lopped off of the title in the US and Japan (where it is called Space Invaders the Original Game).

    • @InglebardGaming
      @InglebardGaming  ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't even realize there was an arcade version of Rainbow Islands Extra version, so thanks for the info on that one. Interesting to hear about the differences there, might have to track it down for a comparison down the line sometime.
      As for Saint Sword, I was covering every game that met at least one of the following criteria: 1) an original arcade version was developed or distributed by Taito 2) it was published by on the Genesis or 3) it was a port of a taito arcade game published by someone else.

      Yeah, Rastan II, what a disappointment that was. I lived the first game despite some rough edges but the sequel is just a mess on every platform that got it. Warrior Blade (Rastan 3) is better but isn't as good as the other brawlers that came out around the same time.

      Since Darius 1 saw an official Genesis/MD release in the last year or so, you can get it legally that way, the prices though on it might not be pretty due to people who bought copies just to flip them on places like Ebay.

    Taito's Sega MegaDrive efforts are par for the course and no doubt based on having to decide where to put your best ports... the lowest install base with the most powerful specs or the highest install base with some advantages FamiCom/NES/PCE?
    Basically as frustrating Taito's Sega MegaDrive/Genesis ports are, they make sense... no reason to make them the best or higher rom Cartridge size possible if the install base is struggling. This is why devs who made games for Sega of America's 32X went either near or full bankrupcy and lost millions of dollars and time. Super Chase H.Q. is pretty obvious, the MD original is ok or passable for what it is.

    • @InglebardGaming
      @InglebardGaming  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's comparable to the 32X situation. The Genesis/MD did huge numbers in US, Europe and other places, so there was a lot of sales potential in much of the world. Also, it's not like their PCE ports were spectacular quality, either.

    Taito's status as a B tier arcade developer in the late 80's - at best - might be why they've cast such a large shadow in the UK retrogaming scene.
    It's probably the only reason most of their arcade games weren't immediately up snapped by US Gold and sent to the Tiertex factories to be turned into child torture devices. It helps that what was considered "average" by Japanese standards, was often way more polished and forgiving than what was considered "good" by western.
    But c'mon, be fair. They're known for more than Darius. There's Daddy Mulk and that Bubble Bobble earworm, for example. Good luck getting either one out of your head! And there's everyone's favorite wallet busting platformer on the NES, Little Sampson. Or you could spend $160 on the Saturn's Elevator Action Returns, and not even get the game!
    All of this pales in comparison to their greatest accomplishment, of course: Those Taito Legends collections on PS2/XBox/Windows. We were so spoiled, back then...

    • @InglebardGaming

      On the plus side, many of the western computer Taito arcade ports are actually pretty decent, unlike Capcom and Konami ports from the same era.

      I think Taito were a top developer. I know Inglebard doesn't like it but Darius is, imo, one of the best shooting games ever made and very innovative. Some of the games they made seemed like they were made quickly just to get money (Crime City) and some weren't that great... but many are really nice. Dungeon Magic is an example. The quality of Taito games is erratic. Capcom had off-days too though. I find Taito's output on the Megadrive very bland mostly with Rainbow Islands being the best. I think the step down in hardware was a pain for Taito and we only really got great ports of their games when the Saturn was released.
