I drove over my 35 year old hat with the tractor.. I was thinking of sewing it back together.. I nearly cried, bought it at the Real Mother Goose shop in downtown Portland.. 😢

I actually wore out a sun/shade hat this year too!
First time I ever wore a hat out.
It looks a lot like yours.
Seeing that it was tearing apart, I started looking for a new one months ago.
But it was still early Spring, and too soon for them to be available.
When the stores finally got them in, every single one of them is just WAY TOO BIG for my head!
I don't know if my head shrunk, or others are just getting bigger!
But all the hats in the stores will blow off my head in a slight breeze!
And there's just no way I can pay $100 or more for a hat, and still sleep easy at night!
I just can NOT do it!!
I guess I'm going to have to mend mine too... ?
    Yours looks cute mended!
I hope mine looks half decent after I attempt the mending!
Altho, I'll basically be sewing the top part back onto the rim bcuz the split is 80% the way around where the rim attaches to the head part.
Maybe I'll just add a bandana with hot glue to that intersection?
    I dunno...
But finding a new one is turning into a big deal !

I found a great condition 'Sun Body Hat's' that are hand made from palm leaves in Guatemala, in my thrift store for $5. It's awesome and I hope it lasts for a long long time.

Sun protection is so important, especially if one has autoimmune issues or if you're like me and of Northern European descent and all of your family gets skin cancer. I need a better hat, I actually was getting sunburned *through my hat* and had to put a piece of cardboard inside of it so I could go outside without getting burned. I want to look into getting some UPF rated clothing too!

Love the family heritage story behind your hat ❤ I loathe throwing things out. I’d rather repair, repurpose or give away if possible.

So many cheap wicker hats don't last five years.
So it might be worth paying $120 once than $25 every four or five years.
That being said, I, too, take good care of the things I like, even the cheap things, because I know I don't have much $$$.

Oh, I think it probably is very much worth it if the hat will last 30 years! You are totally right investing in something better made of better quality materials often ends up being much cheaper in the long run

I have a hat like this but it has gotten very floppy not sure how to fix that issue. Still sorta works but I wish it held up.

Maybe it's too much work or it wouldn't look good, but I wonder if there's a way to create some supports that run perpendicular to the brim?
