- Premiering on Viaplay in Canada (Viaplay.com) and all Nordic territories on Sunday, November 19, Börje - The Journey of a Legend is the highly anticipated, new six-part drama series inspired by the remarkable true story of Swedish hockey legend and sports icon Börje Salming, affectionately known as “The King” in Canada.
The biopic stars Valter Skarsgård (The Playlist, A Class Apart), Hedda Stiernstedt (Kristallen Best Actress winner for The Restaurant), and Jason Priestley (Beverly Hills 90210, Private Eyes) and is directed by Amir Chamdin (Canneseries winner Partisan).
The inspiring series follows Börje Salming’s journey from a small-town Swedish outcast struggling to find his place in society, to becoming a beloved and world-famous hockey player and trailblazer for European players in the NHL. A six-time all-star for the Toronto Maple Leafs during hockey’s aggressive 1970s era, Börje faced violent resistance on his journey - his famously scarred face comes to represent an unbreakable spirit that hockey players everywhere aspire to possess.
It’s also the story of unconditional love between Börje (Skarsgård) and Margitta (Stiernstedt), who follows him to Canada. As he’s thrown into instant hockey stardom, she tries to cope with the unwritten rules surrounding the team and norms of being married to the NHL player of the year.
The late Börje Salming, who tragically passed away from ALS in November 2022, is one of the greatest legends of all time in ice hockey. He spent 16 years with the Toronto Maple Leafs, was the first European player inducted into the prestigious Hockey Hall of Fame, broke numerous records, captured the hearts of millions of fans, and paved the way for countless Europeans to forge careers in the NHL, the world's best and toughest ice hockey league.

As a life-long Leafs fan, I have to see this!!! Jason Priestley as Gerry McNamara? So cool...his greatest role. Priestley loves the Leafs!
I really enjoyed this, for a shot in the dark that looked interesting that I saw on a random ad, this series really delivered and introduced me to a man-even though I hadn't heard of him before-makes me proud to be Canadian. I learned so much and by the end, I was so proud of Borje's accomplishments.
He was my parents' generation, just a few years older. I liked his family life being shown, seeing all these old men as young men, learning about others I didn't know about, and speaking Sweedish was authentic.
I loved Borje and Smokey's relationship (his narration all through) and the original photos and write-up at the end.

When I was a kid I got to watch Salming play and he was my favourite player next to Lafluer. But I watched 2 episodes of this series and I just stopped. It was horrible, horrible acting, writing and just boring as hell. To top it off you had to read what they were saying. Im sorry but if this is for an English audience have the speak English. It doesnt make it any less authentic. I was really excited about this when I first heard about it. Now I just hope someone re does it properly. Dont waste your time
