The Leaf: A Legend, An Icon and Hope

  • There are about 6000 kilometres between Sweden and Canada, and this season, 67 different Swedes appeared in at least 1 NHL game.
    It’s clear the Toronto Maple Leafs aren’t the only team in the NHL to have welcomed Swedish players - but the impact that Swedes have had on this franchise in the last 40 years is undeniable.
    There is a lifetime between where Borje Salming started his Maple Leafs career, and where William Nylander is starting his. Salming first made contact with the Leafs in a dressing room during a game in Sweden. Nylander first donned the Maple Leaf on a big stage in front of a national television audience as the 5th overall pick. In between them, there was a pretty good player named Mats, too.

    RIP Borje. Even during some of the Leafs' darkest years, Salming made the games worth watching. He embodied everything that Leafs Nation hoped for from every player donning the jersey.

    Went down a rabbit hole tonight. On this night, where Nylander just got 2 goals on a Saturday night for a 3rd win in a row. By all reports, Willy is getting closer to signing an 8 year extension any day now, while putting together a career year, in his 9th season as a leaf.
    The foreshadowing in this video and the timing in which I found it is incredible. Go Sweden, Go Willy, Go Leafs.

      I went back to watch this after willy signed his extension! what an incredible video to tie them all together. he really came up this whole way from the marlies, and may just retire as a leaf at the end of all of it. so proud! go leafs go :)

    Salming once ripped some tape off his stick and tossed it over the boards. No one paid it any mind but I left my seat and ran down 5 rows to grab it.

      If Borje had a carbon stick - there would be a few less NHLers walking on the face of this earth. It would have ripped flesh off their bodies. Like a 50 cal. Bullet hitting a human body. Not a pretty image to imagine. RIP my gentle giant. Tensile steel made into a hockey player with a heavy Swedish accent.

    I can't pick one over the other. Salming and Sundin? How do you choose. I guess it has to be Borje since he was the first and that took guts. Canada loves the Swedes.

    The future is bright for the maple leafs. We will be getting back to the way we used to be, skilled & feared. 10 years of misery for a future of success. Blue and White forever & always.

    With Nylander coming up....our 4th (either hopefully Strome, haff or Mitch) cant lose.
    Bottom line, with babs coaching and these great prospects coming about.
    Plus im sure we'll get another top 5 pick next year and possibly even the next we hAve a bright future ahead of us.
    We just have to be patient , but im confident this time we will finally have the development needed to be a successful franchise! I-be-leaf!

    How didn’t he win a Norris ? Oh because they hated Europeans

    • @mike196212
      @mike196212 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That used to annoy me too. I think the only people in the way were named Robinson and Potvin. I too used to think xenophobia was involved(I THINK Don Cherry is still essentially anti-European.). I don't know how many pucks Salming stopped from entering the Leafs' net. He saved the day SO MANY times when Palmateer and his successors were nowhere near the net. And he was a six-time all-star,a feat no Leaf has come anywhere close to since. One of the best players ever.
