That highlight gave me the same feeling and vibes of when internet wasn't that much of a thing and you start talking about this new game that all of you started playing at the same time and discussed about where everyone is in the game, how to beat certain things and listening to everyone's experience during school break or something.
Thats how i felt about playing shadow of the colossus when it came out. All the bosses are basically platforming puzzles, but child me didnt have internet access so i had to figure that shit out through trial and error.
Literally the demons's souls and dark souls experience. Then everything fell apart when datamining came out, I remember people hitting every wall in the game with the talisman that does nothing equipped to see if it did something. Now elden ring is all about "hardcore" gaming, with bosses that do 80% of your health with every hit, and spend half the fight in the air doing triple backflips that you can't interrupt or attack them during it. I remember when people did entire guides in how to skip Flamelurker, those were the days.

Got down into the gauntlet once as Cahara and died to the two headed mauler. First run I did where I found the hexen and realized what it was I beat it in 6 hours getting Caraha A ending.
pathologic and rain world are games that are conceptually similar to Fear and Hunger. both are wary punishing in a way that fits with thier storys themes. rain world is a beautiful commentary on the unfairness of nature and pathologic straight up just mocks you.

First time i played the game i refunded that shit, because of that part. The game just made me feel physically sick, seeing all the gore, dicks and macabre atmosphere. But then picked it back up after hearing about the second game coming out and i love it. XD
16:21 The defense stat isn't broken, it's just that it's a number that gives you a general idea of how powerful the armor should be because the true defense percentages are hidden, probably due to the developer struggling with the spaghetti code. The defense stat actually does a decent job at that most of the time. Like, try starting the game with the knight using the Long sword so you'll get the shield and see how fast the enemies will take you down with and without the armor to see how huge the difference is.
They aren't talking of the defense stat itself, but buffs towards it, like the defense stance, which decreases PHYSICAL damage and increases evasion, however RPGMaker has 3 types of attacks, "Certain Hits", Physical and Magic. Of the 300+ attacks in the game, less than 50 are actually classified as physical attacks in the code and the remaining 260 attacks are "Certain Hits" which aren't affected by evasion.

8:22 A new player will trust a character literally named after torture and get tortured to death. A normal player will know to ambush Trortur and he’s one of the easiest fights in the game. People who have beaten the game will know you can talk to him and sell out Buckman, befriending Trortur sending you on a special quest line that will end with him gifting you a key that unlocks the strongest armor in the game. An absolute degenerate player will know you can just use Cahara’s pickpocket skill on Trortur during the fight and steal the key. Fear and Hunger is filled with these examples of the iceberg going deeper than originally anticipated.
Garnt playing Fear and Hunger is so funny to me after the '75%? I don't like the sound of those odds' moment when he heard how the lucky coin mechanic works Even tho he's a gacha player, but then again one could argue its just usual png gambling compared to hours of playthrough
That's the thing with gacha mechanics though: it is usually only fun when you know it's going to happen, and it doesn't determine every single step of progress. When it comes down to pure luck if you are allowed to make it to the next area of the game..... It definitely loses its appeal. I think the save mechanics really saved this series, frankly; I recall many soured experiences over most of the beginning stages, back when this game wasn't fully completed. Honestly, people warm up more to the game as a whole once they encounter the save mechanic, albeit only slightly for some lol. It's also a pretty good compromise between the brutality the game is going for by keeping it limited, while giving something for the player to at least build off of.
This is why I love games that don't had Yellow lines that would tell you what to do or will hand hold you like an infant who never played a game before. Fear & Hunger, Kenshi, Project Zomboid, and other Indie games that will let you roam around are the best kind of roleplay games. There is no need for Hollywood Cinematic Cutscenes, there is no Need for Narration, and just leave you there to learn and play the game. The same reason why these games had avid fans cuz they are good game and just pure gameplay.

My first run the dogs ran inside to get me and it was on F&H...I thought i might get something for beating a dead horse but instead i had to kill 2 dogs to get chased into the main gate by a dog that ended up killing me
Only type of thing that I think is worth sharing, regardless of spoiler beliefs, is that whole thing with the blank scrolls.... There's just no way you are going to know what to type into that. Things like that, definitely worth "spoiling" as it's essentially expecting you to pull from communal knowledge or waste the thing entirely.
There is only one instance of the game "telling" you how to use empty scrolls and it requires you to remember a seemingly meaningless flavor text you get from interacting with a miscellaneous object. Miro really did a good job of making his game as unplayable as possible while still being a game and I fucking love it! It's usually in the room where you meet Enki (the black priest playable character) if you play as other characters. But here's the kicker of this "tutorial" moment - it's literally just a bookstand that says: "O LORD" "TEACH" "HURTING" You either need a massive brain or a huge leap in logic to figure out how to use empty scrolls

Fear and hunger is alot like dark souls. You gotta explore and just throw yourself into the meat grinder to figure stuff out. Whats nice with dark souls especially is someone can tell you exactly how to defeat a boss and it doesnt really help you unless its a gimmick boss which dark souls 3 oh so loved. you just have to get good at the game to beat a boss that requires skill.
bruh its way more punishing than dark souls. Atleast in dark souls you have guaranteed saves at bonfires. In fear and hunger even saves depend on luck most of the time
I could NEVER play a game like this and enjoy it. Repeated deaths, and punishing difficulty demoralizes me and does not make me want to keep playing. And no, even if I overcome a hard obstacle, it doesn't make the torture getting there worth it. I just have such a hollow feeling and like my time has been wasted.
Fair enough, the game isn't gonna be for everyone, and thats ok; at the very least, hope you can enjoy watching others play the game, like conners playthrough

Not to forget about their souls, whether it's for the immediate benefit or ability to improve yourself.
The Pinecone Pig also benefits doing combats. You can get some super useful items from it

If you beat a guard, he might drop a skeletal arm which the girl can use as a mace (and is stronger than a knife)
she cannot in fact use the skeletal arm as a weapon, not for the girl nor anyone else. Frapollo already mentioned this in a video of his.
