  • This video is about the difference between health and fitness. People often group these words together to mean the same thing, but let me explain why fitness has become something completely different than what most people think of when they hear the word health. As social media is becoming a bigger part of our lives, we’re also seeing a decline in overall health. Holistic health is about mind, body, and spirit. All three of these work together as part of a healthy lifestyle.
On one hand, fitness is about keeping up an image. It’s about getting attention and simply looking like you work out. The fitness industry is all about the content we see on social media. As long as you look physically fit, that’s the only requirement for being into fitness. Health on the other hand, is about more than keeping up an appearance. Health and wellness is multi-dimensional, and the physical dimension is only one part of it. Even though it’s good to look healthy, your physique only tells a part of the story.
In 2016, I spent a lot of time on social media and was very much into fitness and the bodybuilding culture. Even though I looked healthy on the outside, I didn’t care much about my health at all. I took fitness to the extent where I became obsessed with body image. It’s no coincidence that it got worse as I started using social media more. I constantly felt like I wasn’t good enough, despite the fact that I’d get compliments about my physique all the time.
Even though I ate a very clean diet, exercised regularly, and focused on rest and recovery, I still smoked a pack of cigarettes every day. I didn’t have a social life. I had no connection with God. I didn’t feel good about who I was on the inside. I was using dating apps and watching adult content. I struggled with my mental and spiritual health. But on the outside, I looked fantastic.
Fitness, which was once about self improvement, and being healthy and happy, turned into an obsession that consumed me almost to the point of putting my health, and future at risk. The current fitness culture is not about living a healthy life. Many people compromise their health for the sake of fitness.
The main takeaway is that there’s more to health than what we look like. Holistic health is about improving our mind, body, and spirit. Building a physique means little if our mental and spiritual health isn’t right.
