I too did not have the surgery. Long story but had torn acl completely 17 years ago. Did physical therapy and thought everything was normal for 15 years, even playing recreational sports. Not until I had a contact injury a couple of years back was it discovered I had long torn my acl long ago. Physical therapy and strengthening for me back to normal once again. Thank you for this video, most don’t realize that surgery isn’t the only option. Almost glad I didn’t know for certain years ago else I would have possibly had surgery for no reason.

I hope you read this. my PT said I probably have a torn acl, but because they didn't do any MRI we don't know if complete or partial. I progressed a lot after almost 3 months of exercise and physical therapy, but what's left is the stability and when i stand it's a little painful behind the knee as I straighten it fully so I tend to bend slightly out out of fear and discomfort. Did you also experience such thing before you fully healed ? And did this feeling totally go and you went back to your normal daily functions? also how long did it take you to heal? I'm not an athlete, but I only workout at the gym and recently started calisthenics. I really don't want surgery and I'm 36 btw.

I'm 31 and a general practitioner, so i kinda know what i'm talking about.
I had an acl tear during kickboxing sparring 4 years ago. My orthopedist friend talked me into surgury and recently i have re-teared my acl. I think my experience comes to this points:
    1. You're gonna loose a great amount of muscle mass and power in post surgury period and it's gonna weaken neuromuscular connection leading to awful balance and agility.
    2. Unless you're a professional athlete with a lot of time and equipment to go through full potential rehab it's very likely that surgury just throws you in a situation that takes years to come back to same level of agility, power, balance
    3. Most of people with torn acl are not professional athletes, and not sedentary people, something in between that means there's high chance that you don't get ideal rehab, and also there's chance of re tear .
4.because for these population surgury in the best case scenario means you have the same acl but this time much weaker sorrounding structures.

This was a great video for anyone to watch with an ACL tear. When I tore my ACL, it was very confusing as every medical professional gave me a different take on what to do. Ultimately, I've decided to do the full rehab without surgery at the age of 37 because I'm not planning to do more intensive basketball training and I trust in my body's ability to heal from this and come out of this process with stronger awareness towards what caused this injury. There are so many things to consider when deciding what to do with this injury and this video, while it's short and sweet, is a great first place to start.

ACL does not heal that is why they can't use the torn ACL to repair the ACL. ACL can't heal itself because you do not get enough blood flow in your knee to heal a ACL.

If you are young involved in a sport which includes fast rapid or movement which involve pivoting of knee should consider surgery cause in the long run you will save years. If you're not an athlete don't do it just keep on doing rehab. Surgery isnt for the faint hearted it takes lot of thinking and knowledgeable takes. There are lot of football players who have done surgery and are doing just fine. The sole reason for athlete's to opt in for surgery is if you're doing your rehab and getting back on the field your knee will give in every time no matter what sort of rehab you do.

      Question
Does complete ACL tore requirs surgery?can the ACL fixes itself?
      Answer
For our general population with isolated complete ACL tear, current literature suggests ACL rehabilitation prior to ACL reconstruction. There are no black and white answer, every case is different, let’s step back for a second and ask ourself why is surgery indicated, why is rehabilitation indicated, don’t let emotions dictate our decision, actively seek information from our healthcare professionals and make an informed decision.
I have read few literature suggesting ACL reunion after complete ACL tear. More research needs to be done in this field, but we know for ligament tear to reunion, fibers need to overlap, it could be difficult with ACL.
Please see below for an ACL rehabilitation guide.
