This 9 yr old video popped up in feed and since I'm quarantined and bored I looked it up...The compression rate would have met 2010 guidelines.
at least 100/min (including pauses) allowing chest to fully rise in between with no specified maximum. (mentioned that faster was better than slower)
They were doing ~140/min before accounting for pauses and the chest seemed to be fully rising.

kinda arrogant when he said "We've done this a lot of times. we know what we're doing" to the anesthesiologist . when your doing cpr too fast (which is clearly what they are doing) it wont compensate to blood that should be flowing into your heart and brain same as when doing it slow. so you thought you are saving a life but what ur doing was basically useless.

Lol he was lazy c'mon. He only did it because he got told umpteen times and even then he still didn't do it until the lifeguard had to be dramatic and say someone is DEAD. Then he broke into a lazy ass jog. FFS, he was shit! I would've made a valley in that sand I'd have moved so fast at the first ask.

@@angelkotilainen lazy is a bit daft to say, he was clearly not a native english speaker based on the confusion on his face and the group he was traveling with speaking french.
From his perspective this random guy walked up surrounded by cameras, asked him to take a bag in a fairly nonchalant way and pointed him down the beach.
This guy also probably doesn't watch the show doesn't know the lifeguards wear blue and doesn't know what a AED bag is
The Bondi Lifeguards knows the importance of communicating a message in appropriate tone but he failed to do so at that time he should of said something much more imidiate "Someones dying i need you to run this down the beach now!!" Then followed up with a bit more clarification of where to go and kept pressure on him to go quickly.
But beauty of hindsight could woulda shoulda, he got the kit there and the man was revived. I'm sure the lifeguards reviewed all events to refine their reactions as they do with all major cases down there and in recent years they have been much more clear about communication with members of the public assisting them.

For all the people commenting the CPR was done wrong... no. They were doing it properly. They used to say go to the tune of Staying Alive, but now they recommend going faster, up to 120 compressions per minute. As long as you let up enough to let the chest fully recoil, you can and should go that fast. I get the anesthetist was trying to help, but sometimes in those situations you just interrupt the flow of a pre-established team. Though I don't blame him - as a healthcare professional I would want to help too.

Lot of comments here on why Ryan was stupid to go swimming without knowing how to swim. Fact is these commentators are stupid to rush to judgement without knowing the facts. Anyways, Ryan made a full recovery thanks to lifeguards and Defibrillator which was very important piece, no amount of CPR would've saved him.

Police are rarely praised and are condemned heaps, by not only the general public but also the media, seriously.
Police are probably some of the most unjustifiably hated people in the western world, especially considering the majority of them are good people.

Thats how you teach your kids to save a life and also the dangers of being in the ocean. I dont get whats wrong with watching and learning and also praying and encouraging. Its a great feeling when they survive. Everyone clapped too. The kids who watch will be more prepared to perform cpr etc.. where as the kids who dont watch will be terrified and probably panic if they ever had to save a friend

I've always refused to comment on things like this but as a lifeguard trainer and first aid trainer firstly i want to say they saved this guys life man and that's all there is to it, they followed their training and done their job. But secondly due to some comments i'm reading i really want to mention that this is their working environment and they are in charge.. who is to say the 'random' layman person is an anaesthetist or a doctor etc, some people just want in on the action, they just see a possibility to be a hero. It happens, you get them everywhere and my hat goes off to these Bondi guys for their hard work and the many many lives they have saved!!

I agree, great job not standing aside for this guy, being an anaesthetist is nice and everything, but this isn't 72 and fluorescent as we say, this is real life out in the field. Being a medic for 20 years I have encountered a countless number of times where someone says they are a doctor. My first question is what kind of doctor (being a dentist or psychiatrist doesn't count), let me see your credentials and are you willing to transport with this patient? 99.9% of the time they back off. The one time the doc was willing to do all that he saved my best friends life who I was responding on after he got ran over by a dump truck on his motorcycle. The doc clamped his artery in the field and saved him from bleeding out.
These lifeguards are just that, awesome guys that risk their lives to save others. great save

How are these “professional” life savers???? Four mistakes made by my count. 1) right out of the gates, they did not clear his airway after water started coming out. 2) compressions WAY too fast and in the wrong place. 3) WHY didn’t they already have the defibrillator on hand???? 4) continuing to bag him after he is clearly breathing on his own… STOP bagging and allow the poor man to cough the water up!

Always always with a drowning victim, take the time to flip them on their side (if you can), quick heimlich type pressure over the belly to dispel water then start CPR. It only takes a second and could make a huge difference. CPR and airway resuscitation can be useless if the lungs are full of water. If they vomit on their back they will aspirate into their lungs and drown further. I know it's not generally taught but it should be. Look at all the vomit running right into his nose :( They did an amazing job, so congrats to them on that. Except for the lifeguard that told an anaesthetist to get out of the way...that wasn't too bright.

@@evebutcher8529 No I'm not a lifeguard. I have more experience with high pressure, only seconds to think and resuscitation than a lifeguard just like they have more experience than me with water rescues. That anaesthetist on scene has about 5000 times more experience than all of us put together. They do a great job, seem like fantastic people all around and I believe I said that. It's advice that could potentially lead to a better outcome, how is letting people know that a bad thing? Not every situation like this has 6 people assisting and a defibrillator, sometimes you have only your breath and hands.
