One of the most proposterous things was when Pop Sugar tried to defend Tarte's shade range by saying it made sense for them to release those paler foundation shades first because it was a winter release and people are "paler in the winter and darker in the summer." After Fenty launched their foundations, everyone knew that having a full inclusive shade range for foundations was possible. For companies to do a release & not have inclusive darker shade ranges, its due to laziness & tone deafness, and there’s no good excuse.

The one thing I like about fenty, they didn't just give importance to making sure they have shades for black people but everyone! So many brands think if they have a good shade range for black people they are good, but I am indian and a lot of brands still are very bad with making makeup for brown people, so bravo to fenty to catering to everyone! they deserve the popularity they have.

also like…you’re putting something other than water on your face-you’re putting chemicals, because literally everything is chemicals-on your skin. it’s fine, but if you’re so obsessed with being “clean” don’t wear makeup at all. like we don’t want to be smearing arsenic on our faces, but obviously there are always going to be drawbacks to wearing makeup. the idea that the only good makeup is makeup with “natural” ingredients is silly. if we didn’t have man-made chemicals in our makeup how are we going to keep products stable. also, i wrote most of this comment before robert started explaining why “clean, ingredients you can pronounce” makeup is sort of silly so i was very pleased to hear how aligned our thoughts are lmao

"I can't pronounce it so it must be bad!' was a debate I had with someone recently. I asked them if they avoided tocopheryl acetate and they said 'yeah!' while rubbing a Vitamin E lotion into their hands. I pointed out that some ingredients are perfectly natural but for the sake of formulation or sourcing, they're called their scientific name.
The person still tried to argue that 'if it's natural, they should just call it that!' and I had to point out that regional names for the same ingredient can differ wildly so it's better to be safe than risk a mistranslation that could put an irritant into a batch of something.

The true counter to the problem of actually toxic compounds ending up where they do not belong was wider education on chemistry. Instead we got a cultural phobia movement. If you don't even understand what you're afraid of, you won't know enough to actually successfully identify and avoid it. (I'm talking about actually harmful chemicals like PFAs, to be extra clear)

Clean at Sephora is defined as: Brands formulated without phthalates, formaldehyde or formaldehyde releasers, oxybenzone and octinoxate, and more.

Ok, but it’s the exact same thing as race swapping by using Black people in tokenized roles. The community jumps EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. to defend these table scraps. Tokenization isn’t rep, companies use outrage marketing using Black bodies CONSTANTLY but don’t actually put the work in. The movies/shows are always trash, then the company turns around and further uses PoC, often BW to accuse accuse people launching valid criticism of how bad the show or movie is as “racists” which generates further resentment. All of which the PoC put into these tokenized roles have to deal with as they get bullied wildly. The companies know this will happen, they just treat PoC as disposable rage bait.
All the while, zero accountability for how little rep for non-Eurocentric stories/cultures/histories/folklore there is not only in the media itself, but behind the camera. If the media wasn’t Eurocentric, then every role behind the camera wouldn’t be yt and that’s the purpose of tokenization. Maintaining the status quo. Like Charlemagne said, just bc racists hate it, don’t make it good.
Makeup companies do this on purpose FOR the reaction to generate more views for less ad money. People get FOMO because most ppl are the medium range, then rush out to try it. If the community just didn’t fuck with any brands that have deliberate launches like this, just looked at it, said “not for me, ok, I’ll spend my money elsewhere” this type of rage/FOMO marketing would end.
Instead, people jump everytime the crony capitalists say so.

Natural ingredients are much more likely to give you an allergic reaction. That's why I, as a person with multiple allergies, haven't found an organic or "clean" skincare brand yet that I can use. And don't get me started on the "chemical" fearmongering. Natural substances are “dirty” as hell, there’s always a bunch of impurities in them unless you refine the ever loving fuck out of them and the amount of each active ingredient you get is different every time depending on the source, because of inherent variation in biology.

Then for each of those shades have a warm, cool and neutral version. That way even if you dont have a perfect match, you have what you need to mix one! @@abigailpena5950 this is where I'm at. makeup is so pricey already. I'd rather buy something from a brand that anyone can buy from. It makes me sad that people with darker skin don't have the same access to makeup, so I want to support the brands making an effort and keep them going.

I never understood "limited launches" being all the shades the market is already flooded with. If you can't release a full shade range, start on the ends and work your way to the middle. Make the shades people can't find literally everywhere.

I’m so over brands releasing like 6 shades of foundation in 2023. When I was a teenager, I could it was really difficult to find my exact shade because I’m pale but with a yellow undertone and everything came up so pink on me, and now every brand has my exact shade! So if they can do it for white people, they can definitely do it for deeper skin tones!

I just started and I'm sure you'll be talking about it, but I remember when they brought out a foundation a couple years ago and it was basically 50 shades of beige and 3 medium to deep tones. And then they had the audacity to send the PR packages to black creators like Jackie Aina, Alissa Ashley and Nyma Tang. I never bought from them at that point and they only cemented themselves on my future no-buy list with that action. I'm going where I'm invited from the start and not an afterthought.

I remember this every time someone makes fear mongering claims. I haven't used Tarte in years. In part because of their laughable lack of accountability and representation in the beauty space and the fact that their products can easily be beat by drugstore products. 💁‍♀️

There are so many more problematic things that Tarte has done. Faked reviews, Maureen’s “apology” that she flippantly filmed while blow drying her hair (which she also had to apologize for), and constantly being stone deaf to their customers. And there’s more, I’m sure, that I’m forgetting at the moment. I was a devoted user until I removed the blinders.

Ive noticed a huge number of white, progressive influencers who will call out a brand for poor shade range but will not stop buying & promoting that brand. Tarte is absolutely trying to push away BIPOC customers, and we should all be boycotting them. It's insane that in 2023 the beauty community cannot stand up & resolve this issue - brands are flat out lying & we keep allowing it. It's disgusting how so many customers & influencers are loyal to brands and personas, and derive identity from them, and just give lip service to ethics.

They also treat nations outside of the US poorly (as many brands do). I wouldn't use MUFE they're not cf but they don't bother to get fair shades in. They have a sole N00, a R102 and then it jumps up to maybe 1 x 06 (forget undertone! Soz) and then wall to wall medium. We don't get the products you do, we don't get minis generally and they block us from ordering them in from sites like Cult Beauty. Tarte's mini-shape tape comes in 2 shades in Australia - that's it. Both medium. Covergirl with their 40 shade range? They sell 6 in Australia. Six. Lightest is L3. I think they have a tan shade. That's it. Tired of it.

I also just found out that Anissa Beauty, a popular brush brand at the moment with the purple handles, tried to charge me $USD68 for shipping 2 brushes. That's nearly $AU100.
