Lola, this video was so inspirational. It was my watch in the nail shop yesterday ☺️so loved that you took the risk to just quit and figure out what you wanted to do. One of my favourite reads is David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell. His point really is sometimes go to smaller ponds and become a big fish rather than an ocean that could swallow you up.
I have no doubt you'll bloom just fine and that feeling doesn't go away once you've found your work tribe 😊

Sis, Miss Black Remy, I want to extend a thank you for these videos, I discovered you this morning and unbeknownst to me was already subscribed to you. I am 35 and have more years of life than you and am currently in a career rut, been in stressful Social works for over 10 years but tired of the systematic racism and mistreatment so I've had time out. I have utterly no idea what to now do or turn to, but your videos are really interesting and I find that listening to them is both cathartic and causing me to look into other industries. Moreover, as a fellow black young lady this is so positive to see. I am slowly making my way through your videos and wanted to extend my thanks to you. Our representation is so important and necessary. Keep on keeping on hun, you never know how your words can inspire and help another. xx

I had a recruiter tell me recently (before I found my new role) that based on my experience and level that I should be looking for a lower salary, especially considering the “climate” (my industry was not greatly impacted due to the events of this year) after I told the recruiter my ideal salary.
It’s funny as I was able to get interviews and a offer with salaries matching my ideal and higher.
After further research into this recruiter, I realised they’re not really that good. I generally take what people say with a grain of salt. Knowing your worth (and being realistic is important). I’m glad we have people like you in HR.

Aww thanks. Funnily enough I work for a recruitment business now as Head of HR and have learned so much more about what it takes to me a good ethical recruiter. The ones in my organisation are very relationship orientated and wouldn't waste anyone's time or lie just to get some commission but there are lots who are far less scrupulous, I'm sure! Thanks for watching. Please do subscribe and support my channel xxx

I had a similar experience. The recruiter and hiring manager mislead me. Later, I found out the other candidates has 3-6 months more experience (negligible as I brought I think, but I was told we all had the roughly the same amount), but my interview went well and I answered “perfectly” lol.
I truly don’t understand why they interview candidates that don’t meet the non-negotiable elements on their list.
I’d rather a company repost the job advertisement a few weeks/months later to find “ideal” candidates to interview, than waste people’s time. At least then, you can see that you don’t meet the “cut”.

Your experiences with recruiters is not super unsurprising to me. I work as a data analyst in the recruitment industry. We're aware of this kind of behaviour but can't say I've been engaged too much with that side of the business. However, I am looking to leave the industry and this makes me want to leave even more. I really can't abide that kind of unethical behaviour. Part of what my team wants to achieve is to change the culture of the industry but it'll take more time than I'm willing to wait. I did watch because I've been thinking about a career move but it's more of a lateral one.

Hey Alex, thanks for your comment! I actually work for a recruitment business now and I love it. There's lots of bad practice within recruitment but feels great to be working for one of the ethical business and I've learned (I kinda knew anyway) that if you're a good recruiter, you don't need to do that stuff anyway and you know it wouldn't serve you!
What do you think you'll do next?

I seeee. I work for one of the big three recruitment companies. Truth be told, I probably have a number of issues with my current job which you probably don't want to hear about. The industry doesn't inspire me a whole lot, but I'm also early into my career and haven't had a whole lot of experience. My current company is quite corporate, and I'm sure you'll be aware of some of the impacts that can have on the job. I'm not a huge fan of those impacts. My company's also so big (and perhaps different parts of the business are not well coordinated with each other) that it's difficult to get the kind of perspective you need of how the company operates that is so important for my role. I've mostly interacted with general staffing recruiters, rather than professional staffing recruiters. From what you have said, it does feel a bit like I'm lacking perspective (because of experience of work as a whole, and of my own company).
On a related note, some analysis I did on some of our recruiters showed that they were not gender biased, which is pretty cool to be able to say with certainty.
In terms of what I'll do next; I'll stay in the same job role, but move to a different industry that interests me more, probably a big company again. I'll be more careful of culture, the resources the team has, among other things. It'll be bit of CV building at this point still, I think. However, in the future, it could be a lateral role change, a move to a startup, medium size company, perhaps to a more niche company. I'm clearly still figuring out what works for me with the whole work thing.
Hope this all made sense. Fair warning, you may also see me pop up on your other videos.
