    For a channel this posh, we love it that he goes to his roots and includes his grandfather's Old Spice. Not being snob is a class of its own.

    Gentlemen: I am sixty five and have been using Guerlain Vetiver for forty-five years. Over the years, I have been stopped on the streets by both men and women asking me "what scent are you wearing?" It is absolutely sublime in my estimation. So glad it was included in the list.

    Eau Savauge EDT is my favorite of all time, perfect 10/10, great for everyday and also for going out. It is still a very modern and charismatic scent. I also like ADP Colonia for the summer. Old spice is always a great option in the winter months. Great review, I love the classics and wish they would become more popular again. I just ordered samples of Floris No. 89 and Eight and Bob, thank you for the suggestions!

      Even through reformulations, it smells absolutely fantastic. The EDT is a masterpiece of perfumery and is both timeless and classical at the same time and works year round. I was a bit scared to try this because I really dislike the chemical mess called Dior Sauvage but this fragrance shares zero in common with that one.

    i am not sure if anyone is going to look at my comment, but i did a search as my 17 year old son requested cologne for christmas. So i was doing some research and found this episode, which is so well done. What an education. I have encouraged my son to follow you, as he will be going off to college next year and needs to develop his own style. It might be great to do something for young men in that age group. Off to university and a good part of the past couple of years doing remote school, so never out of sweatpants! They really need help! Thank you so much!

    I was very happy to see Old Spice included. I always figured I just had hopelessly bad taste for liking it, so nice to see someone who knows what he's talking about liking it too. The smell of it is simply interwoven into my 1970s and 80s childhood.

    I am a big fan of Azzaro Pour Homme. I have a bottle my father gave me in the late 80's and I never grew out of loving it as it got older. I acquired a couple more bottles over the years and continue to go back to it for various occasions. It is my most personally nostalgic fragrance because of my dad. It isn't for everyone but it would be in my top ten classic fragrance favorites. Thanks for the video. I have many of the ten you chose. You have wonderful taste in fragrances. Great video...thanks again!

    Thumbs up for choosing Acqua di Parma Colonia and Knize ten. They are both always in my home. I do think that AdP has longer longevity than you say. I get 4-5 hours out of it. Knize ten only gets better as you get to know it and it lasts very long.

  • @Konsaliki
    @Konsaliki 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    Being a classic fragrance aficionado myself, I have to say that this is by far the most carefully curated list of classic scents put together by any menswear youtuber. Thanks for introducing me to the JFK-Perfume, it is not well known here in europe. Kudos for including Knize Ten (one of my 10/10 fragrances for sure) and for pronouncing it correctly as well - many americans struggle with the counterintuitive czech pronunciation. ;)
    About the lack of "real" leather in Knize: Leather scents couldn't be synthesized until fairly recently. Thus, in the days of old, perfumers tried to evoke more of an "idea" of leather or of an environment that would feature leather goods (think gentleman's club furniture). What Knize calls "leather" in the base notes used to be an accord dominated by birch tar, for example.
    Superb video, greetings from Germany!

    • @hespokestyle
      @hespokestyle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Many thanks for that comment. And for your affirmation that I pronounced Knize properly. Someone else in the comments has taken issue with it and called me rather unsophisticated. Great history of the "leather" in Knize Ten as well. I really appreciate that explanation.

    I would have also added Aramis in there , but the modern man would move onto new frags as I have learnt, I was caught up in a time warp only using frags back in the 70s & 80s only these passed few years I’ve been using modern frags & my word are they great. The frags you mentioned I think are way out of date & have had their time. I must admit your advice means so much to us, keep it up my man 👍

    Hermes Equipage is another classic scent I love. I used to wear it in the 70's & 80's and so is CD Eau Savage. Recently I felt a little nostalgic & bought myself an Aramis, which I wore for my job interviews in the 80's. I agree with you when you said these classic fragrances bring back old memories. Another fragrance I bought which I used to wear is Caron Yatagan. I also own some new fragrances like Blue De Chanel, Prada L'Homme, YSL Lanuit de L'homme, CD Sauvage, Givenchy Gentlemen, etc., but none of them brings back good old memories like the old classic ones.

    This was one of the best reviews of classic mens fragrances I've seen in a long time. All of the iconic scents were included as well as the surprise inclusion of Old Spice which my father wore in the 70's. I myself have worn Green Irish Tweed and I've worn Acqua di Parma for about ten years now. For a second I thought you would include Grey Flannel or Halston but no need really for those.

    Knize Ten is magnificent. A smooth, show-stopper. It only seems appropriate for colder weather to me. Also, I think the leather note referred to is actually castoreum, a material used to create leather notes, but here I feel it's character shines through more distinctively in it's smoky, dried fruit qualities.

    I would add two fragrances: I daily use an After Shave from Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novello in Firenze, the Melograno or Pomegranite fragrance. It has the familiarity of fresh baby powder or talcum. My late friend George Hayim in London was fanatical about fragrances and would often make his friends, women and men, go into his bath and wash their fragrance off, which he would replace with what he considered something more suiting. But once when we were walking in Kensington he suddenly stopped and said he admired what I was wearing, and it was the Santa Maria Melograno. It lasts for about two hours, but would one want an after-shave to last longer? My second fragance would be another I use daily: the original Mäurer & Wirtz cologne from Cologne, 4711. On days when I don't shower I wash my body and bald head with it. Lemony and light, it disappears rapidly, but oh what a lovely way to start my day. - I would add that I also use the Acqua di Parma, but then, I live there. - Joe Bailey Cole, Sant'ilario Baganza, Parma

    Hey, I once worked for Knize in Vienna and I love the "Ten" for more than 25 Years now. Out of all the pronunciation-varieties I've ever heard, yours comes closest to how a guy from Vienna would say it. Still: the Z is a very soft sh-sound. Like the one you use in "sauvage" Plus: the K and the N are closer, like one sound. so the result would be a long ee like in "knee" but the K here isn't silent. not k-a-nee... but hard KNeeeesha with a rather short end-syllable, like some people in english-speaking-countries would pronounce the end-syllable of "porsche"...

    Top notch list and hard to argue with any of your choices, your advisory warning about Knize Ten and Eight & Bob, or the universal acceptance of Green Irish Tweed and Eau Sauvage. Some lesser known gems that fits this "Classic" genre, yet are generally well-received (i.e., old school but don't smell dated) are:
    Chanel Antaeus (yeah, a bit of civit and funk, but it's quite tame and well-received IMO)
    Balenciaga Ho Hang Club (the most classic example of an 80s woody chypre)
    Maxim's de Paris Pour Homme (surprised nobody talks about this one...stellar gentleman's scent)
    Antonio Puig Sybaris (recently discovery and well-received men's cologne)
    Gres Cabochard (yep, a women's perfume that today smells perfectly masculine)
    Penhaligon's Endymion (my favorite from this house and more "Classic" then Blenheim Bouquet...even though it was only released 20 years ago.

    Brian I love this video and I can say that it got me into niche fragrances! Thank you Brian! I went out and bought samples of almost all of these. Here is my take: 1) Savage: too common/generic/universal for me. Smells so basic. I could not connect with it because it smelled like general locker room cologne. Maybe because it has been imitated so often? 2) Knize Ten: awesome. Love this. It's weird and exotic and I cannot find it anywhere without paying an arm and leg which is sad. I'll just wait to buy until I am in Vienna I guess. 3) Floris 89: This is gross and smells like an old person or cleaning agent. I seriously was excited to get it but I hated it. 4) Guileain Vetiver: couldn't find a cheap sample 5) Eight and Bob: nice but a little feminine. Took awhile for me to get to love it. but I really enjoy it. 6) Green Irish Tweed: too expensive for me if you buy it from Creed, but there are many other fragrances close to this scent that I ordered instead that are a fraction of the price and to me just as good if not better. 7) Aquca di Parma Colonia: horrible. smells like a bathroom cleaner or disinfectant. I accidently ordered the Acqua di Parma Oud and fell in love with that and several other Aqua di Parma series. The original Colonia is just so gross to me. Barf. Smells better with no cologne. My wife also hated it. 8) Blenheim Bouquet: not bad smelled like gin. Didn't pursue further. Too antiseptic to bond with. 9) Rl Polo Green: too generic for me. Didn't quite get it. too universal for my nose. 10) old spice: actually yes! love it. Smells great and it's classic and like $8 at Walmart. Love it. You should have included Prorasso shave cream and aftershave in this video. Maybe in the next.

      Ron, I would agree w/you two decades ago. The problem w/Aspen today, it's been reformulated and it's staying power is terrible. In other words, it's watered down--shame, but a fact. GIT is the way to go and saving for it is well worth the price tag--you can find int on discounters for half the price as retail. Shop around. If you don't want to pony up the cash for GIT, another option is Cool Water and that may suffice. Hope this helps, thanks.

      @@amgolfer3591 I dont find the recent Aspen a terrible performer. Even thou it doesnt last the whole working day, likd GIT does, it's so cheap you basically can bath in it and reapply. Not to say Apsen smells as sophisticated as GIT but its definitely in the same ballpark.
      As you mentioned, also over here in Europe GIT can be had for much less than the official Creed retail price (I paid around 150 EUR for a 100 ml bottle), its nevertheless an expensive fragrances for most and Aspen gives you at least a taste of GIT.
