Not accurate, checked some sources from people who know ASL and it doesn't mean anything, might just be a trained gesture for something (a treat or to get him to come out or to communicate something).
The perfect depiction of true fear. Your strength won't save you. Your bravery will be worthless. You are simply a helpless fool for being in this place. Then, to watch the thing that brought you that fear try to bring back the peace die right in front of you. The saddest most merciful thing to happen to Gordy was death. He was never supposed to be domesticated. And we were never supposed to play god. NOPE.
This is definitely one of the most... effective 'set up' scenes, that I have ever come across. I have to admit though, the (ahem) 'period correct' stock chimp sounds are a bit... glaring.
There's several comments saying he signed "im sorry" and "what happened" after the incident but no asl thread or discussion supports this theory. The consensus seems to be that it's a learned/rehearsed gesture that he'd get a treat for, or he's trying to communicate *something* to the kid. The movie's whole message is to not humanize animals, so it doesn't make sense for Peele to write the chimp as apologetic for what it did.
There are others who say that the message was Animal cruelty and Child abuse in the industry. Idk how that shows this in here since it was mostly the chimpanzee story
The most terrifying moment in all of cinema and the essentially other reason why I stay far away from chimpanzees no matter what. I stay far away from them like I do with snakes and other animals. You never know what might cause an animal to become violent.
I guess there's a parallel here. In both the past and present, Jupe shows a willingness (curiosity?) to reach out and contact something terrifying and unknown. In both cases, death soon followed.
Yes! With Gordy, it's almost undoubtedly the fact that he never made eye contact/had his eyes veiled by the table cloth that made him feel special, thus leading to the second incident. Jupe felt he had some mastery over the unknown/untamed that he could 'train' Jean Jacket to come when summoned, which turned out to be very untrue. Not to mention, he dies direclty because he (like everyone else in the crowd) looked Jean Jacket in the eye/directly...

PTSD in a nutshell. End up hurting people you care about then regretting it. You still try to apologize for it, but all it takes is one time to go too far.
@Ashbrash1998 Animals can get PTSD too. My grandfather had a dog that he took with him when he was drafted in WW2 (he smuggled the dog on board the sub he was assigned. @@worldwrestlingdrafting5949From what I remember the movie is a message about the exploitation of animals in media. The fact that while animals can be a great spectacle they are still dangerous and unpredictable, there’s quite a few horror stories of people owning chimps that ended with them being mauled by a “beloved pet that would never hurt anyone”.
This scene goes from terrifying to tragic so quickly. After you see this horrific carnage, you slowly realize that Gordy's an animal. An innocent animal that doesn't know right from wrong. He's scared, confused and doesn't realize what he had just done. His friend is cowering and hiding from him and as he reaches out to him for comfort, he's killed.
At most he was gesturing at the woman to emphasize that something was wrong with her (she's dead) and he's asking the only other human who isn't being manic at the moment to check it out
Yeah, that's what happened. There was a story within this film. Ppl say that there was a message on how there is animal cruelty and child abuse in the Industry and they don't carr about what's needs to be done to get a movie done
4:39 this translate as *What happened to the family?* this meant gordy didnt meant to murderer all of them his instinct was triggered and caused him to go in a state of insane rage due to the balloons popping
It’s a spectacle. It’s a focal point of the movie, that people focus on and seek out the wrong things in pursuit of a spectacle. Even when everything is just…so wrong. Jupe seeks out a spectacle with Jean Jacket and welllll…
Everyone talking about 'poor innocent chimp' yeah OK, but what about the poor innocent young girl who was the victim of the victim. You see her later in the film and you see the results. Quite a sad and horrific thing to have happen to a child. All while nobody does anything.
Idk how I feel about this I hate it but I keep coming back to it loving it at the same time it gives me a feeling idk what it is but it makes me come back to it
This is literally a horror movie about aliens (well alien singular) and yet the most famous scene is with a chimp in a very realistic scenario , and I almost feel that’s on purpose .
It’s so cool how a balloon popping started the beginning of a killing spree of a wild animal, and at the end of the movie, a balloon popping ended the killing spree of a wild animal
The way Gordy dies also ties into one of the central themes of peele’s movies in that humanity isn’t the hottest meal on the plate. Both Gordy and jj are examples of how dangerous nature is and how people thinking they have a better understanding than they really do means they can control and exploit it. In spite of how terrifying these creatures are they still went down like any other wild animal would when getting their brains blown out.An ongoing theme of these movies is of people who try to control what they not only don’t understand but also believe they have superiority over only to get the worst humbling of their life. The final nail in the coffin is they can’t even say they lost to something larger than life and say it took something nearly unstoppable to beat them as they lost to something just as vulnerable as them.
Easily the best scene in this incredible movie. The overall symbolism as well as the dipiction of the animal is nothing short of genius. I'm positive this was inspired by the real life story of Travis the Chimp, which really brings this story to life because...it DID happen.
Bro… I was thinking of this scene minutes ago but I didn’t search for it or even say a word since I’m in my room alone and it all of the sudden appeared in my recommended videos 💀
no monsters. no paranormal stuff. no psychos or anything like that. just very real nature, and it's one of the most terrifying scenes in cinema. bravo.
So I don’t know if the shot at 4:14 is meaningful in anyway but I interpreted it as further but also subtly hinting that Gordy is supposed to be an analogy for Jean jacket as the lampshade somewhat resembles Jean Jacket’s final form.
