@@MikeJones-m6rcompletely agree, this idea our people (Maori, me being one) were peaceful before the white man came is completely untrue, we were savages split into many different tribes who were constantly at war, killing woman, children, participating in the slave trade, commiting genocide and all, we should embrace today and everyone be thankful for how far NZ has come, this blaming game for things that happened in the past just holds people down and fill them with resentment, we need to learn the real history of the past, learn from it and move forward.

Mihikiteao is our Kuia who lived with Rua as the Matriarch of that time. Our Koroua his great helper Hirawano. In Ruatoki Ohotu was built for her. She is now on Maunga Pohatu. I grew up listening to urban Auckland elders revere Rua Kenana. They were very protective of Ringatu, and loyal.
Constabulary did so much harm to our peaceful dwelljng places, back then. There was much envy about our abilities.
For many we were never supposed to be clever organizers of peaceful and, social groups of peoples.
Yet we have been, for the longest time.
When we had just learned to embrace our own Spiritual of a greater God of all Gods beliefs. We were a new tapu wairua people.

I'm pleased to see the govt admitting to wrongs and I hope that Rua Kēnana's mana will be restored. Even the crown could not find him guilty of sedition, and had to fall back on a charge of resisting arrest - and it seems they cruelly threw the book at him! However, I would like to direct the makers of this episode of The Hui to the Wikipedia page concerning Rua Kēnana. From my quick reading of the page, it seems that Rua Kēnana was indeed a dangerous man, though not a seditionist. Clearly clever and talented, he also seems to have been quite the cult leader, and that is dangerous all by itself. As I was watching this episode, I kept thinking that I would like to know more about Rua Kēnana's beliefs, but the subject was not covered by any of those interviewed. Additionally, if the information on the Wiki page is incorrect, you might want to challenge it and have it rewritten to reflect the truth.

Gen X Pakeha were the first white generation of Kiwis to be educated using a curriculum based and created by both Maori and Pakeha. Our parents education was on the contary a British document. Where British history and NZ's position subservient to it was taught first and foremost. Being Gen X myself unlike my typically conservative pro British parents I for example at Sixteen in 1992 learnt a comprehensive and thorough history of Rua Kenana and the injustices meeted upon him his family, community and followers by the crown in 5th Form history.
Unfortunately the Pakeha (basically British) conservative Baby Boomer occupancy is still drawing breath. AND VOTING!!
I believe real change and a real positive shift in NZ politics will occur when the BB generation finally draws it's last breath and Gen X takes its rightful place in governing NZ for all of us. And baby. Its been a long time coming. Thats for sure.

What a patronising and disrespectful diatribe, typical of the santimoneous crap from being brainwashed with false guilt! Yes, it's good to see different perspectives. I'm a historian, but I was trained to see perspectives in an unbiased way. You have obviously been taught to be biased against a whole generation, your parent's generation which, both Maori and non-Maori, were taught to just get on with life. Not a bad thing. As for generation X, I'm part of that and can see the condescending and paternalistic attitude typical of our generation. The Baby Boomers grew our economic infrastructure, both Maori and non-Maori, all of that hardworking generation. Our generation has been a generation of blood-sucking money-leeches from what our parents' generation created. As for the curriculum, I was there and didn't see any of what you were apparently taught. I had to learn it later, at university. Now however, I see young non-Maori people being thrown guilt about colonisation, which is crap. It's not their or our or our parent's fault. And it's a very one-sided history. Iwi colonised each other, for example, far more and more savagely than European settlers did. Also, down south, the connections between Maori and Europeans were much more peaceful and connected. Bet you haven't heard about that!
