  • The 39-year-old California woman who murdered her stepdad after discovering hundreds of her nude photos on his laptop was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Jade Janks, who claimed she had a close relationship with her stepfather, Thomas Merriman, killed him with a combination of strangulation, suffocation, and lethal doses of prescription pills. The Law&Crime Network’s Jesse Weber breaks down the case.

      I caught my Moms ex husband videotaping me changing through my window when I was 12. I looked up from my mirror it was directly next to my window and I seen our family video camera in the window. I could see a small red light and “Sony” and immediately recognized what it was. I ran downstairs to where the camera was usually plugged in and it was gone. I ran outside and found a ladder under my window. I then ran in my driveway and found my Moms Ex in his car I screamed “what the F are you doing” and he said “I’m checking the lights in my car” while he looked shakey and wide eyed. I knew exactly what had happened but my Mom just wouldn’t believe it. I don’t know maybe she just couldn’t. She kicked me out and accused me of trying to ruin her life. He never had enough guts to touch me, I was a strong willed big mouthed kid. I would have told everyone and I did tell everyone exactly what happened. Anyone who would listen until my Mother finally took my side years later. She lies to people now and tells them she left him right away but that’s an outright lie. She kicked me out and stayed with him for two years while I lived with my Nana and didn’t leave until my Grandfather told her she could move in our family vacation cottage until she got back on her feet and by then her ex was sleeping with some guy named Jeff and my Mom caught him crossdressing in her clothing with Jeff.

      There's a psychological term for this phenomenon. They're called "flying monkeys". Which is what the brother is.They're the people that malignant narcissistic psychopaths stir up against their targeted "scapegoat". The "flying monkeys" obey their psychopathic masters to the point of lying, manipulating and covering for them either through deception and mis-characterization or through blind obedience. I sadly speak from experience on this. Although unlike here, I never have, and never will, become the monster that they want to turn you in to like may be the case here. The best way to think of the narcissistic psychopath is as literal vampires. They either want to feed off their scapegoats suffering like a vampire does blood or they want to turn their scapegoat into the monsters that they are. And one of the ways they do this by stirring up people against their target. It's a truly sad and sick dynamic that these psychopaths are natural at.

    Little did I know within two weeks of moving ‘he’ came to live with us. From then on my close bond with my mother came undone and all she cared about was ‘him’
    I hated be alone with ‘him’ as ‘he’ made me feel so uncomfortable and when I became 16 years old ‘he’ staring to act really pervy round me.
    Apparently ‘he’ liked to come in my room when I was asleep to check if I was alright. I didn’t know anything about this until I moved out and told me ‘he’d’ seen my lower half.

      This is kind of an interesting case, because even if she hadn't lost it and murdered her stepdad, I don't think she could've brought him up on criminal charges either. While it may be perverted to have nude pics of your stepdaughter on your laptop, I don't think it's illegal though (unless she is underaged in those pics, and that wasn't the case here). So there was no legal recourse for her, and the only way to effectively get back at him was to do what she did. But of course, as a civilized society, we can't just let her get away with murder, so she now has to answer for her crime. Unfortunate, but justice has been served on both accounts, I suppose.

      @cxzact9204 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@user-rb4ze1ly8l This is exactly how I see it too. Despite how incredibly perverted his actions were, it probably wasn't illegal, so she may have seen no other way out. Which makes her actions almost understandable. The problem for me comes in with her defense - claiming that he OD'd and she didn't kill him. The texts clearly show that was a lie. No jury could let her off on that defense. Her only hope was a lesser charge due to the extenuating circumstances, but that would have required her to own up to premeditatively killing him and then hoping the jury would sympathize and give her a manslaughter or second degree murder verdict. But lying to their faces, spinning a story of a drug overdose and explaining away each incriminating text with outlandish claims on the witness stand probably didn't help. Her sentence seems appropriate in light of the dishonesty about what exactly happened.

The house of cards he carefully constructed, that kept his lies and perversion hidden, came crumbling down. The mighty fall every day. This woman did society a favor. It's just sad she didn't try to take him down legally. I'm sure she knows she would never win, look at how his family act like he was the one victimized. She knew no justice would ever come. And while it’s incredibly gross that he had these photos in his possession, they were photos of an adult. And though Janks didn’t consent to her stepfather having these photos, they were taken with her consent by her boyfriend. There was zero evidence ever discovered or recovered that suggested he had any images of children.

    If those photos were taken privately by her ex boyfriend, how did her stepfather get them? Unless they were shared publicly online, someone had to have given them to him. I think there’s more to the story than we’re being told. She claims that she never killed him but her text messages say otherwise. They are too damning to ignore. A crime of passion in my opinion is ruled out when she takes a week to plan his murder, reaching out to a “fixer” for advice? That’s a bit nuts.

      He could have had her passwords to her cloud or she could have accidentally left her account logged in on his device. Her ex could have given them to him. He could even just be a weirdo who found them online and downloaded them. Your rigid definition of a crime of passion is technically correct but in real life rage and humiliation builds . A crime can be both thought out and a crime of passion

    I'm brand new to this story. What I'm gathering from comments is that she deleted all of the nude photos & LE wasn't able to recover any of them but 1. Check out the Dylan rounds case. His phone was found at the bottom of a lake & they were able to extract a video of the killer cleaning his gun with his bloody hands. I struggle with them not being able to recover any photos that she deleted, doesn't make sense. I'm going to the beginning to learn.

    • @JohnRed

      The law and crime viewers are braindead and don't know anything about law or crime. Of course if the photos existed they would be able to recover them. Jodi Arias deleted photos from a camera and then put the camera in the washing machine yet police recovered all the photos.
      In every single case covered by this channel the viewers have the worst take possible. They think every guilty person is innocent and every innocent person guilty. At this point everyone should just read the first 3 comments on a Law and Crime video and then just take the opposite stance and you'll be 100% correct.

      Yes, this is really unusual, that they photos are completely gone. But my understanding of deleted items on your computer is that everything is stored in small packets of scattered information. In order to recover a deleted text or photo the packets of information must still exist, or in other words, not be over written by new information. Once the data packets are over-written they can no longer be recovered. At least that used to be the case but newer technology may be able to recover data when it's been over written or not.
