Real Mac & Cheese - Outdoors

A simple way to make macaroni cheese without making a roux. The secret is to use a stove with a wide burner that has good flame control. I ended up with a hot spot and subsequent burnt pan when using a BRS3000 and Decathlon Forclaz MT900 but its alway worked when cooked on a Primus Crux. The Crux hasn't the best flame control but due to a wider burner can cook food a lot better than the other t...
4 of 4 - Mini Day Hike Gas Stove

A compact mini gas stove setup capable of real cooking that can boil a litre of water - enough for a day hike. This is ideal when cooking more adventurous meals. The gas cylinder I have is currently unavailable but others ...
One Pot Chicken & Rice

Easy one pot meal. Quick to cook on even the simplest backpacking gas stove, wood fire or alcohol. My duel alcohol stove system is designed for this style of cooking as the smaller stove has far less heat output, so it will simmer without burning the pan. BCB Fire Dragon Stove Simple Alcohol Conversion #2 MYOG
I tried regular aluminum foil and lined the FireDragon BCB put in a piece of Carbon Felt, poured in alcohol, works good, No leaking. Thanks Again EH
You are welcome
GOOD THINKING , I tested the fire dragon with alcohol, thinking there would be no leaking alcohol, YIKES I was wrong. You gave me the solution and I have carbon felt. BEST
It should come with a warning ⚠️ Stay safe
Great setup!
Thanks, glad you liked it. I have more...
Were did you get cup from, I'm needing one of those. Plus great vid
They are from a company called "light my fire" and called "Pack-up-Cup BIO 2 Pack - Mug" Hope that helps
Great idea. Thank you. I hope to pinch exactly that for a one week hike on the Robert Louis Stevenson trail in central France, very soon…
You may want to drop two burners in it as it will help if you intend to boil larger amounts of water. Good luck with the trip and let us know how it went.
Good video, I use fire rope in the middle space. Same job. Enjoy
Fire rope is probably better as it doesn't shrink like carbon felt does. Thanks for taking the time to comment
Maybe a stupid question but what does the carbon felt do? And does that need to be replaced after x amount of uses?
The carbon felt acts as a wick. Ot shrinks after a few burns but doesn't need to be replaced. Any non flammable material can be used. Glass fibre loft insulation was popular some time ago but I have never tried it. Hope that helps.
If you have alcohol in a container WITHOUT some sort of wick the alcohol will boil and spit small drops out of the container which will cause the whole thing to overheat and erupt into a fireball. A wick of any type prevents this from happening.
Nice idea and vid. Will have to try it. Top tip: If you scrunch the paper into a ball and then straighten it out, it will conform to the shape of your pan easier and not spring back. Where did you get the little baking rack pls?
I got the rack from Ebay. I had hoped that it would fit my smaller trangia mess tin but it's a tiny bit too big. As you can see it's a bit too small for my larger Larken (nolonger available) mess tin. These racks are sold alongside copies of trangia mess tins so search for something like "lunch box rack" and check the size carefully. Thanks for the crumpling trick. Got to give that a go.
@@EpicureanHikers Nice one. Thanks for getting back. I'll have a look...
Oh sugar... Brown sugar would taste better
Definitely brown sugar. It's the best.

top tip, thanks 👨🍳👩🍳
Great vid. Not really a coffee connoisseur…whats V60 technique? Where can you get the sealer from please?
V60 is a type of coffee filter that has a lot of pretentious techniques around it. To be fair it does take a bit of skill to get a decent cup out of it. I picked the sealer up from Ebay. Lots of similar ones are available. It was under £10. Search for "Mini Bag Sealer 2 in 1 Heat Sealer Cutter Handheld Bag Sealing Machine" takes a bit of practice. Good luck
Thats a great idea, going to get myself some and try them out.
I didn't realise they could be sealed at first. When I did it was a game changer
@@EpicureanHikers Just ordered some. Can't beat a good coffee outdoors, and I can't be asked to take my Aeropress with me. Atb Mally
A little slower, but with Stoves with no simmer option the cake won't burn if water checked & topped up. A very good option. I have tried with alfoil but didn't think about using parchment / baking paper. Well done! Thank you for sharing 👍 🙂
Cooked this way the cake is moist and very sweet. If you keep the cake above the water on a rack it doesn't matter what you use, parchment or foil. Thanks for commenting
My only question is, where did you get that grater?!?! My cook kit is solid, but the only thing I've been looking for is something to zest lemons.
Sea to Summit. I did see one on a website, will post link in the description, in a pack of stuff called "Kitchen Bits." I picked it up decades ago so it doesn't look as if it's still available but you may find old stock somewhere. Hope that is of help.

@@EpicureanHikers haha damn it! I am in the States now, but was hiking the Te Araroa a few months ago and went by a ton of Bivouac stores. Thanks!
WOW That looks so delicious 😋 😍
It is. One of my favourites to have on a day hike in late autumn. Thanks for commenting
Nice stove and good video. The different parts pack well inside each other👍. Making camping stoves is fun. I once made a modification of the Esbit stove. It works with a Trangia gas burner, an alcohol burner and can also burn wood. It might also work with a Trangia alcohol gel burner or a multi fuel burner, but I don't have them.
Thank you for your comment. It's always fun to use something you have made yourself and the trangia burner is a classic for good reason.
Really nice job!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it
To clarify.. is the gas cylinder from a gas lamp, and you removed the lamp part of the system?
Yes. The cylinder is from a gas lantern. Most of these lanterns fit standard gas cylinders. Some offer a small cylinder as an optional extra that has the same valve as a standard gas cylinder. A company called Camping Moon sells a larger cylinders that holds something like 35g of gas as well as smaller ones like the one I picked up that holds 15g. I like the concept but didn't like the high cost of Camping Moons products so picked up the one in the video for about £15. Unfortunately it's no longer available but others of the same volume are out there and can be found with a bit of searching. I hope that answers your question if not please ask again.
The gas lantern cylinder is removable for filling. Also the lantern can be attached to a standard cylinder as shown at the beginning of the video.
Very cool! Will have to source one for my emergency bag
It's quite heavy compared to an equivalent alcohol setup such as this th-cam.com/video/0UsuS68DJ8U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=b8RE3CyASDzDc6Gz but is admittedly quite cool. Haven't seen many videos about them outside of Japan. Better still put together both!
@EpicureanHikers true. But I do like the guarantee of more control for the simmering element. Having said that, I genuinely LOVE the other set up for a quick boil up!
I'll just leave this here... th-cam.com/video/r5O3OTJZeoU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fiE6YIQ6YKbhbaBZ

Nice! I just cut carbon felt and put it in the rectangle well.
That would work. Nothing wrong with just filling the tray with felt. Thanks foe taking the time to comment
Beautifully prepped, executed and filmed. I can imagine it would taste amazing in the outdoors. I dod laugh at the mini grater, but must confess that the mini knife makes me ache!
I left both Opinel #9 and #6 at home. Thankfully I had an mini Victorinox Alox. I chuckle everything I use the ridiculous grater but it's OK for small stuff like garlic or ginger. It came with a bunch of other stuff so I feel obliged to use it. Thanks for comment.

I wouldn't say ingenious...after seeing this one th-cam.com/video/RLy75dTe30M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=GxcwaaKnJyzuLQ3y Expensive but so cool.
@@EpicureanHikers personally I prefer the homemade version, recycled items and the thought that went behind it. Regards Broadlander
Nice.. make me a lasagna….😂
If I could I'd eat the lot. 😁 Sorry about that.
That's pretty cool...I never thought that those little stoves could be used like that
The smaller the stove = less heat. Sometimes less heat is better. We tend to prepare for the most extreme weather which we rarely experience. I started making these little stoves as a backup to my main stove so that if everything went pear shaped I'd be able to get a hot beverage or something. After using them in day hikes they are my main goto for day hikes. With careful choice of ingredients and recipes it's surprising what you can do with a simple setup like this. I'm still having fun with this concept but will rely on my canister stove for multi day hikes and use these as a backup. Thanks for watching.
👍👍👍 Nice, very nice 😊.
Thanks. Glad you liked it.

Or you could just carry a thermos.,,Have fun stay safe.
I do that as well. Usually after a heatwave when everything is bone dry which increases the risk of starting a fire. Thanks for the comment
Nice. Question - how big are your pockets? How do you fit all the veggies, and rectangular pot, in your pocket? 🤔Also, what do you use for keeping the seafood cold, and how do you carry that in your pocket ?😶
I'm told that I have deep pockets and short arms. Hope that helps.
I love employing to two separate burners, eliminating the need to risk refueling a hot stove. Clever!

I am loving this compact cooking system series! Pretty cool ideas you've come up with and I especially like your home made pot stand 👍
The pot stand works quite well. Over the years I have tried all sorts of pot stands and have settled on this.
@@EpicureanHikershow can we make this pot stand? Tutorial?

This design is now on my must do list. Beautiful Bride will appreciate it and surely use this to brew her 3-1. Loving your channel. Great ideas. Reckon this one would also work well with a tin of butter beans or similar instead of potatoes, i think ive nade a soup like that before. I just tend to throw anything in when Im cooking 😂
Butterbeans would work I'm sure. Good suggestion. I'll give it a go later in the year when the weather gets a bit cooler. Thanks for the suggestion and for watching
Interesting idea.
Thanks
That’s awesome! What container did you use for the stove body?
It was a travel deodorant or shaving gell. Details here th-cam.com/video/r5O3OTJZeoU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=3tXl8Vnj79EjySTG Thanks for watching.
Put a fried egg on top...
Powdered milk for extra flavour?
Two very solid suggestions. Chilli works well as does onion. As is, they work well on a multi day hike but can be thought of as a blank canvas that you can add onion, cheese, paprika, chilli, garlic and anything else you can think of. Not necessarily all at the same time! Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts.
Wow, that's really nice...it looks like you are using the bcb stove but with your own burner.
