  • This is Cornelius, our glorious Barred Rock rooster.
If you're looking for a comprehensive book about keeping chickens, Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow (amzn.to/1q0lvkS) is fantastic. That's how we learned.
WARNING: Cornelius crows near the end and it's very loud. You might want to turn the volume down.

Me too. 5 barred rock, 5 Dominiques, and 3 cinnamon queens (there were 4 but one died when she was a week old due to health complications).

Majin Gojira yes that is the advantage of an aggressive rooster, which is why I have kept him. He does a good job protecting the hens. We live in an area where there are a lot of predators and we have never had a problem with him around.

I bought my Barred Rock because I was told theyre very aggressive and they sure were right. We left his spurs intact and we haven't had a predator problem since.

Chacho B. It really depends on how you treat the rooster and the breed. My cousins had a Barred Rock rooster and they’d toss him in the air and later on he’d chase those who came near him

Barred Rock roosters are more beautiful than white leghorn roosters. I’m hoping I may have one someday

My rooster sounds just like that when he crows. He's the same size as this one. I have been looking to find out why he sound like that. Could you give me some reasons why that is happening. Could it be that he has a breathing problem.

I had a 2,375 lb. BULL that whose bull challenge was a SQUEAK!! pretty hilarious. just the way the vocal cords developed. Nailed every job, though, so he wasn't "happy".

do they sell these chickens anywhere but already killed?

    • @Kd8OUR

Unless you get them from a farmer or your self it is unlikely you will buy the meat of this breed in a store. This breed takes too long to get big compared to other modern breeds made for meat production. It's a good dual purpose breed for a farm, but a commercial chicken operation would need a different breed to have a practical production that can compete with other chicken farmers.

Rural king and tractor supply sell chicks. Tractor supply only has them a certain time of year but rural always has them. You’ll have to see if there are any in your area. Late reply but it’s whatever

Usually the meat birds you find in a grocery store is a Cornish Rex or a cross thereof. Barred Plymouth Rocks can be used for meat and eggs, but if you want to raise them for meat, they should be fed a high protein diet.
