- Ever been told you had an Eye Freckle? This freckle or “choroidal nevus” is concerning as it could become an ocular melanoma, a potentially deadly form of eye cancer. Learn what testing can be done, the diagnosis and what treatments are available.
There are many different pigmented spots that can appear in the eyeball and one of these spots appears as a freckle or mole behind the retina. This retinal nevus or “choroidal nevus” is basically a mole behind the retina of the eye and could potentially become a melanoma. Melanoma of the eye is a type of eye cancer that can seriously threaten a person's eyesight as well as their life.
These choroidal nevi are typically found in about 7-10% of the population but thankfully most people never develop a choroidal melanoma. However, due to the severity of the diagnosis, eye doctors take the evaluation of choroidal nevi very seriously.

I had eye melanoma 16 years ago. I received radiation but at the end I had an eye enucleation (eye removal). In those days, there were a lack of information of eye cancer and its consequences. Every six months I visit my ophthalmologist-oncologist for following-up. I have a pretty normal life--working, reading, writing, driving, exercising...etc.

Thank you for your video on this topic. Last November, I had an emergency visit with my optometrist and was told I had a freckle in my left eye and inflammation around my optic nerve. I was referred to a retina specialist and then referred to two ocular oncologists. Long story short, I have an atypical nevus and the nevus is being monitored every few months. Keeping fingers crossed that things will remain stable and nothing changes over time.
Was diagnosed with melanoma in the back of my right eye January 2019 and received proton beam treatment on the eye. Now receiving liver scans every 6 months and so far, so good. Your video was very informative and explained very well. My freckle picked up by optician in 2014.

@@TheSlageSaga Hi Brian, hope you are well. I did not have any side effects as such. My first appointment was having the mask made that braces your head for the treatment and that was the longest appointment. Mask does not feel claustrophobic and each of the gourmet days of treatment went well and takes about 30 minutes of setting up for 30 seconds of treatment. Some people feel a little sunburn effect on eyelids bit I did not have that. No pain or discomfort. Directly after each treatment your eye was covered for a few hours then all was OK as you have drops. Due to the location of my Melanoma at the back of my eye and as it had curved around my optic nerve and covered my macula theacula and optic nerve were damaged so I do not have a great deal of vision in that eye. The sight in the eye is opaque, so just a grayish whiteness and faint shadows for some objects the brighter the object such as windows or lights, obviously show better I also have some blind spots in mainly what was my central vision, but again more due to tumor location and were they had to focus the treatment rather than the treatment itself. Concerns were the eye would try to produce too many blood vessels to try to repair the damaged nerve but this did not materialise and so the eye was saved. When they sew the tantalum markers to the back of the eye (4) a few months prior to Proton treatment worried me. However this again was not painful and was in and out the same day. Took a couple of months after markers place for the eye to settle but soon look normal again and you are not aware of these markers in the eye. At first I worried, but there was no need to. I hope this helps a little and I wish you good look with treatment. If you need any further questions answered just let me know. All the best Gary
Hi Brian, For me the Proton treatment was very positive and there was no further growth and so by just over a year it was shrunk and has remained so since. Diagnosed 10 Jan 2019 and treatment was 25-30 Mar 2019. Although I now live in Canada, I had my treatment on the NHS in the UK as I have only recently emigrated from England (UK) so I did not need private health insurance. G

I just went to my eye doctor last week and was told I had a "freckle" on my left eye. A few years ago, another optometrist told me the same thing but at that time they also diagnosed me as having an ocular hole - same eye. The ocular hole seems to have pretty much corrected itself...fortunately. She kept asking if I had any questions, but I didn't really have enough knowledge or information to ask any questions. It would be nice if they would tell you what you should be concerned about if they find this type of thing in an exam. I know that as I've gotten older my vision in my left eye has begun to deteriorate more than I would have expected.
I appreciate this important info because my ophthalmologist has been monitoring my “freckle’ for the past few years. It’s pretty scary for sure and I’ll inquire about some of the testing you mentioned. They dilate me and take photographs with a modern machine I sit and look into but I’m not sure if that’s the same as ultrasound. I will certainly be asking more questions at my next visit! Thank you!

This just popped up in my feed. I was diagnosed with choroidal malignant melanoma 3 months ago. Today I’m laying in a hotel waiting for tomorrow to come to get the radiation plaque removed that was put in on Tuesday. There was no warning for me. I have a pituitary tumor that was found in 2006 and I began having vision changes and migraines so my endocrinologist wanted to make sure it was not pressing on my optic nerves. I went in for a field vision test and there it was. Because of it being so rare, finding an ocular oncologist on my area was difficult. I had to travel 4 hours away. I can not stress enough how important it is to get yearly exams with dilation. It could save your life.

@@nanamandeey703 not in that eye, I ended up needing to have it removed. Other people are more lucky if their tumor is caught early, while still small, or in a different location. Thankfully my right eye remains healthy.

Your last comments are soo apt Doctor Eye Health - even though you have good vision peoples - lots of similar stories reading below, I have 6/5 vision not had eyes tested for 10+ years, had a shadow and it turned out to be a large melanoma - eye now removed and who knows what road the journey ahead will take !
I'm a T2 Diabetic, well controlled, thus far, and I get a diabetic eye exam every year. She showed I have these faint brown spots. She said they are like what we old folks get 'liver spots' on our skin. She said nothing further, save that I have cataracts that will need surgery eventually. Yeah, they take photos of the back of my eye..
My Mom was diagnosed with this disease and unfortunately it spread to her liver and she passed away. She did receive radiation prior, but the Dr said there still was a 50/50 chance it would spread.

I recently had an issue with extreme high eye pressure induced by taking corticosteroids (Prednisolone) for another issue on my eye. It would be good if u can make a video about the dangers that can come with these eye drops. I read also some comments where people say they have blurry vision by taking prednisolone which can indicate high eye pressure. I know its probably a relatively small subgroup that react on Corticosteroids like that. But it is happening.
Another good topic would be people who are suffering from Pannus. I think its mainly caused by contact lens wear.
That can also happen with nose drops/spray. Scary!
I have an interesting story about my choroidal nevus. My optometrist first noticed it many years ago during a dilated eye exam. He said that it was unlikely to be cancerous and sent me to a retina specialist to have it checked out.
The retina specialist examined my eyes and took pictures of the nevus. He said the chances that it was cancerous was very small, but he wanted to see me once a year to make sure that it wasn't changing. I saw him annually for several years and there were no changes. The doctor was eventually tried and found guilty of tax evasion. He lost his medical license and was sent to prison.
Another doctor took over his practice. When I saw him for my annual exam, he examined the nevus and looked at the records from my past exams. He said to me, "This nevus has been stable for years. I don't need to see you again. Your optometrist can monitor it".
Since then my optometrist has performed a dilated exam every two years. There have not been any changes. I think the retina specialist just wanted my money.

in 2021, I experience static vision, and so much glare after seeing object, many floaters, flickerin dots, and the most freaking me out is that… when i use glasses and the glasses is wet because of the pouring rain… and when i look up to the lights… I CAN SEE weird circle ( like black stone) so much huge circle around the lights i see.

You have to go to the doctor no matter how afraid you are. That is what I had to do

Should be getting some kind of diagnosis this week after surgery to remove a tumour from the semilunar fold in my eye. It started like a pale freckle in November, now it's grown larger, darker, I can feel it there and it has many large feeder vessels.
My Opthalmologist sent an urgent referral to the hospital to check for conjuctival melanoma. Went to the appointment, Dr said it could be seriously dangerous and arranged op for a week later. Will update with how the op goes and the results. Very worried atm but so glad I noticed it and took it seriously straight away. It's changed so much in a matter of months....

What’s the best treatment in your opinion for macular edema caused by radiation retinopathy? I have this in my left eye from a optic nerve sheath meningioma.
I know this is unrelated but can you talk about how useful special pillows or pillow covers for allergies are? I regularly wake up in the night itching my eyes. I've watched your videos on eye drops and general tips for allergies.
That is a good question! this plays a role for people with floppy eyelid syndrome at the very least. Perhaps it will be a good short too. Thanks!
I had this diagnose just this Monday. They called it "low risk" and said it could be enough to just monitor it to check for growth for the next months so I'm still optimistic. But I told them I wanted it gone as soon as possible before it spread.
I have conjunctival nevus. My dad also has this and I am south Asian race. Hope this is not as severe as choroidal nevus

I was told i had a freckle about 4 yrs ago.I just had an eye exam with pictures not dialation.This dr said i have 3 flat freckles, but are normal.I will be going every 6 mos.I feel better going twice a yr.even if i didnt have any freckles. Like i said in another video, iam recovering from dry eye and was just told my cataracts are stage 1.Ive had them for almost 14 yrs.I have got glare and mild blurry vision for distance almost overnight in 2020.Iam in search of a corneal specialist to see if my cataracts got worse literally overnight or do i have a corneal issue.Iam sorry to repeat all this but i lost your reply to me on another video.I like to watch your videos and have learned alot watching you.I value all your information.Thank you !
I was just diagnosed with a choroidal melanoma last week. Went to Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Oncologist wants to do Brachytherapy, but they don't take my insurance, nor take out of state insurance. I live in New Jersey. I can't afford the exorbitant surgery fee and follow up fees. Do you have any ideas of who or what I can pursue. I'm terrified and don't want to lose my eyesight and die. I am a colon cancer survivor also. BTW, thank you so much for all your great vids.

This is not directly related to this video, but can you please suggest a good contact lens for high astigmatism? I tried Cooper Vision Biofinity XR Toric but it didn't work for me. Your astigmatism contact lens video is now three years old so couldn't find any relevant information there.
So when my son was 10 he had something growing on front surface of his eye. Once removed they called it a no pigmented mole. Would he be more likely to have this issue?

What are the chances of a shadow in the retinal photo (not the one that’s meant to be there) being something bad? I got my eyes tested today and there was a dark shadow that they have referred me to an eye specialist for. I didn’t get to see it properly but I think it was like a shadow, and round? I didn’t get to see very closely. They told me it’s probably nothing to worry about but I am still worried. I am short sighted and I also get migraines. I’m 19… I’m trying not to be scared but I can’t help it. It had been over 2 years since I’d actually had an eye test so I don’t even know how long it’s been there.
Doctor, I have an interesting question for you. Topical miotics can constrict the ciliary muscle leading to accommodative spasm or "pseudomyopia." Overtime, does this "pseudomyopia" causes axial myopia in the long run? Thank you!
Excellent question! I am not aware of any studies on that but I will look into it. I can see it having a long term effect on young children and maybe some adults, but otherwise I doubt it for people who are 30+ years old. But again, let me get back to you on that.

Hi doctor, i am 22 years old living in SG and i dont rlly know what local eye doctor at singapore eye centre is doing, my eyes is 24/7 red eversince young and they told me its normal…. Even i put an eyedrop it doesn’t give me white eyes… doctor please help me with my issue😞
I had fuches corneal dystrophy. I had a transplant on my left eye which improved my vision. 6 months later I had a transplant on my right *this was my better eye at the time), but I have never been able to see out of it since. After the op I was extremely sensitive to light I couldn't even look at my phone because of the light from that. After about a year it improved, but I am still sensitive to light but not so much. They tried doing a transplant again but still no vision. They say there is a different operation in which they will replace the full cornea. However they can't tell me if it will work, they say the front of the eye is so damaged they can't see the back of my eye. If the back of my eye is damaged it won't work. I don't know what to do.
Thanks for sharing Frances. Sadly, that is a tough decision. If the doctor can't see into the eye they just may not know what the result will be. Sometimes a B-scan ultrasound of the eye can tell your doctor if the retina is at least intact. Otherwise, a full thickness PK (penetrating keratoplasty) is sometimes needed. Being you have already gone through several corneal surgeries, you are probably pretty used to the precautions and surgery routines. However, it may be your best shot at useful vision in that eye. Either way, I wish you the best with that.
@@DoctorEyeHealth thank you so much for reading and responding. A PK is what is being suggested but I seem to have lost confidence.as nothing seems to go right with this eye. Once again thank you- it is a decision I need to think about.

I suppose what worries me is me losing the sight of my good eye because I would be totally blind then. My aunt had shingles in her eye about two years ago - it was during lock down so getting hospital apps was difficult, but she has lost the sight of that eye now through shingles!!! I have a freckle on my iris. Always have, my great grand monster had the same exact eyes. Green, amber rings around the pupil, freckle in the left eye. Glad that’s all I got from her. No, it’s not a typo.

I've been told my freckle is in the angle of my eye, not in the back. I'm getting it checked again to make sure its not growing. I'd like to know why so many doctors just give you a prescription for new glasses and don't do a thorough eye exam. I've been wearing glasses or contacts since I was 12 and I'm just finding out there are problems now at age 62. Don't ophthalmologists believe in preventive care?
I got my first pair of glasses last year at age 20. I ignored my eye sight for too long and opticians are expensive. I went there due to eye bluriness, extreme headache and pain on the right eye straight at the back! The optician didn't even tell me my diagnosis or prescription he just said the headaches will go away. Even now they haven't. My right eye is worse whenever i take off my glasses, I wear them 24/7. I went to an ophthalmologist he only gave me eye drops that's it. His like its an allergic reaction?! I demanded to get a check up due to the intense pain only got the 23rd of May to get scans etc.

Please talk about hydrogel contacts. I find them more comfortable than Silicone hydrogel lol Never had a problem with hydrogel 1 day lenses till I switched to Silicone hydro 1 day

I have a question, i am very young and i am worried about possibly eye cancer or any type of bad thing in the eye and i have been seeing floaters and small dots in my vison, i mosty see them when i look in the sky and i have also sometimes been a weird feeling that i feel like there is a flash in my eye but i dont have it and, I also feel like i need to blink more and that i have a weird feeling in my eye, almost like i need to get something out of my eye that i cant feel or dont even have. I have also sometimes felt a flash in the eye and i am not sure if i am imagining it or if it is the lamp. I am sick right now and maybe it could have something to do with that, as i said i am very not sure about what this . I have also felt like my field of view has gotten bigger and that i can see the more to the side of my eye, i dont what this is but i am worried and googleing my symptoms only makes me feel like i have a deadly desease so pls help, also sometimes i see werid colors that disapear after like 0.1 secons so pls help, i try to go to the nurses office at my school but she is never there pls helpp🙏🙏😭😭 I dont want to die
I have a melanoma tumor in my right eye. It was 9.7x13 point something back Dec of 2020. After surgery of a radiation patch i noticed blurry and multi vision in my left eye and till this day the doctors cant answer me . they think theres nothing wrong with my left eye but its been blurry and multi vision . its very hard to text you as one right eye is blind and the other eye im having this problem . i have been tested for eye glasses but i still get the same afect and my doctor has pulled. My licens.

Good evening doctor I am from India and suffering from severe dry ice caused by Steven Johnson children earlier I was using lacri lube ointment but now it's not available I request you if you have time please can you suggest alternative of this medicine which contain same composition solved I don't know what it called but I request if there is any ointment or I drop which is best for severe dry ice I have only one percent tears in my eyes
So I was told 2 years ago that I have a small freckle on my eye. I just had another check up last week and thankfully it just looks the same apparently and that it is nice and flat. They said not to worry though? Just that it can change like a freckle anywhere else on the body. I don't have brothers or sisters but my mum's brother, my uncle lost the sight in his eye due to a melanoma, shit now I'm worried 🥺

Hello. Doctor, this is interesting as for years on my right eye I've felt like there is a grain of sand somewhere on my eyeball and very uncomfortable to the point I must close my eye and rest it. I can feel it . Thank you for these videos😊
Hey Julie! There are many things that can be changing with the eye that could cause a sensation similar to a grain of sand being stuck in the eye. Anywhere from a true foreign body, to a concretion stuck in the eyelid, to corneal filaments, to recurrent corneal erosion, a dellen, dry eye, etc. If you have not seen an eye doc specifically for it, i think that would be best.

Thanks, yes I still see it. Thankfully mine is very minor and does not require treatment. New research has suggested it may be linked to inflammation. I hope to report on that with a video soon.

Is it bad if a choroidal nevus appeared randomly on an annual test? I don’t think that my previous doctor saw one three years earlier. He didn’t seem worried and just said to monitor it every year. I am an adult and have been going to the eye doctor for about 10 years:

I went to opticians on Thursday, sent to eye infirmary today for to see a doctor to be told that I have a mole back of my eye and then to be sent to have a scan of my eye! Doctor really didn’t say anything but that my mum has mole back of the eye also, with water at the back of hers.
I don’t suffer from migraines or no serious headaches but to have other problems, just about to have full blood counts this week

Doc should i be concerned if the eye i have a eye freckle in has the worst vision, has a clump of floaters which has a slightly dark smudge dot? Andd just in general is overall weak.

Dr. Allen, my ophthalmologist has been following an "amelanotic choroidal nevus" in my eye for the last 30 years (no changes). What does the "amelanotic" mean and is that good or bad?
SUCH A GOOD QUESTION! Amelanotic means it has no pigment. There are often more difficult to detect but great to hear your doctor has been watching it.

Depends, if they change or grow then it is important to have them check regularly, for many people, they may have melanosis which is very normal. Be sure to ask your eye doc about it so they can give you a diagnosis about what you have,
Yes so this is what happed to me, 2 years monitored and then decided to do radiation,Brachytherapy...good news no Cancer,caught early🙏🏻Please get checked regularly.

Many things could be the cause of it. Dry eyes, stress, corneal conditions/inflammation, best see an eye doc in your area to be sure.
What if I’ve had a cold sore in my eye? Can I still have lazik? Or any eye surgery to see better . I’m 56
History of HSK does put someone at a risk for re-activation with any eye surgery. It may not be a definite contraindication but something eye doctors would consider into their risk calculation. They may recommend putting you a prophylactic antiviral before a procedure.

I have a question I have eye floaters I'm 17 and I had a migraine and I lost vision in my right eye temporarily but then my head hurted that I went to sleep to stop the pain my eyes hurted as well ever since then my vision isn't the same anyways I have eye floaters and flashes is it normal I wish I never ate pizza
Should I worry about eye flashes
Migraines often coincide with a flashing light referred to as a migraine aura. These are usually temporary but are often regarded as a diagnosis of exclusion. Whenever there is new floaters or flashing of lights, i always think its best to have an eye exam to just be sure everything is OK. If the migraines are a recurring thing, best to discuss it with your family doctor or a neurologist for possible medications and lifestyle modifications. I'm 17 too and i have exactly like 100 on 100 same exact symptoms as you. It's horrible living with this condition. Nothing can be worse. How about to get to know each other?
@@DoctorEyeHealth I got the migraine just one time and thats when everything went sideways I got bunch of floaters and I also got dots that move when I look at the blue sky I don't know if they're called flashes or white blood cells I went for a eye exam and they said I had nothing wrong they also didn't notice the floaters they used a machine that scans the eye instead of using drops to dilate my eye and see but I was wondering if it was serious its been months yet my vision still the same I only see the flashes when I look at the sky
My maternal grandmother, mother, and sister all have a freckle/mole on the back of their eye. Is this something that can be hereditary? I find it interesting that they all have one. As far as I’m aware, I do not have one, even though I have plenty of freckles and moles on my skin.
I am not sure if there is a hereditary link, however I have heard of towns that have abnormally high amounts of diagnosis. Do you all live in the same area by chance? Thankfully, from one study i have read there is a low risk association between skin lesions (moles and freckles) with retinal nevi - even though they share a similar name.

It’s where my mom has lived her whole life and my gram has lived here almost her whole life-she lived in a town about 30 minutes away until her teenage years. So yes, we’ve all lived in the same town. That is interesting…
