1966 Corvette passed down from father to daughter | Why I Drive #36

  • This 1966 Chevrolet Corvette didn't find its way into Leslie Sisco's family on the best terms. “When Mom came home, she found herself the new owner of a Corvette,” says Leslie with a smile, “and Dad nearly found himself divorced.” All's well that ends well, though, as the this classic Chevy spent the next several decades as an integral part of the Sisco family. Leslie is now the owner of the car after her father passed away a few years ago. She drives it regularly and has formed a close bond with the local car community. It's during her drives that she feels her father's presence most closely. “My dad would be proud that I take it out and enjoy it because he definitely enjoyed it,” she says. “If I just kept it in a garage and never enjoyed it, that would be disappointing for him.”

@@WarriorsPhoto Hi Ricky, yes, we’re rebuilding from scratch a 1954 Chevrolet with my son and my dad. Three generations laying hands on it. I hope to be able to keep it going on to our next generations.
The image of a kid helping us in a ole farm shop, an old dog lying on the gate, it’s a perfect feeling and sightseeing. In spite of living in the city, we have a farm 50miles away.
I can only hope being contributing to build my 7-old son character with good examples, and create good memories.

The car itself is wonderful, but the fact that Leslie is able to share the same experience of driving this car, just as her father had done before her, is what is most special. I agree, don't paint it. You can keep the patina, and maybe get the paint buffed out and some protectant/wax treatment. The same goes for the inside. Get everything deep cleaned and apply some vinyl & leather protectant and polish the chrome. Worn areas are just "character".

    I'M A 68yr OLD GEARHEAD
.... I'VE GOT A 69 CHEVELLE SS ...... ALSO HAD ONE WHEN I WAS A SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL IN 1971 .... WHEN YOU TRULY LOVE A CAR .....
IT'S SOUNDS CRAZY....IT LOVES YOU BACK .... SOMETIMES I DESCRIBE IT AS BEING A
"CAR JUNKIE" ..... THE CAR IS ALWAYS A TOP PRIORITY ... MAYBE NOT
NUMBER ONE .... BUT IN THE TOP 5 AT LEAST !!!!!!
THE 327 IS NOT A MONSTER ENGINE BUT WILL GIVE YOU A GOOD RELIABLE FEEL OF THE ROAD AND THE SENSATION THAT YOU HAVE LEFT ALL THE CRAP BEHIND YOU AND YOU GET AWAY ....
NOW ... GET SOME VERY GOOD DUST FREE BRAKES NOW !!!! AND YOU WON'T NEED ANY MORE PARTS ... ALSO DRAIN THE BRAKE FLUID AND REPLACE IT WITH THE BEST DOT-4 .. FLUID YOU CAN FIND ... THAT SHOULD KEEP THE BRAKES IN GOOD CONDITION AND DON'T LET THEM WEAR DOWN TOO MUCH BEFORE YOU REPLACE THEM ... I'M NOT A CORVETTE SPECIALIST BUT YOU'LL PROBABLY NEED TO ADDRESS THE BUSHINGS IN THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM .... YOU COULD CHEAT THERE AND UPGRADE TO EUROTHAIN
BUSHINGS ... FINALLY PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE COOLING SYSTEM ... ONLY USE DISTILLED WATER AND A GOOD ANTIFREEZE THAT WILL INHIBIT RUST ... IF YOU WANT SOME EXTRA INSURANCE .... REPLACE THE THERMOSTAT WITH A RESISTOR PLATE THAT WILL KEEP IT RUNNING AROUND 190° .....
    AND FINALLY ..........
    DRIVE IT !!!!!!!!! IT'S A CAR ... NOT A STATUE !!!!!
I'LD TELL YOU TO GIVE IT LOVE ... BUT I THINK YOU GOT THAT ONE COVERED !!!!!! AND WHEN YOU DRINK .....
    D R I V E ... PAY ATTENTION TO THE CAR AND THE ROAD !!!!!

My late Dad bought a triple black 66' coupe brand new after he started working for GM, paid $4200 for it. This was his daily driver and he lived in Hamtramck as he worked for Gear and Axle. The winter of 1968 a car slid into it while he was getting Christmas gifts at some gift shop thing at his work. It was repaired but it rattled and he sold it and bought a 68' Camaro...not even close to the Corvette. About a year and half later I came along and the rest is history. Its the reason why the mid-year coupe is THE GREATEST CAR EVER MADE...LOOK AT IT!

I recently lost my Dad, we weren’t close at the end. To say he was a gear-head is an understatement… (he was a founding father at Direct Connection) Miss you Dad.
