The struggle for healthcare in the US: The Only Doctor | Witness Documentary

- Dr Karen Kinsell is the only doctor in Clay County, one of the poorest and unhealthiest regions in the US state of Georgia. Her run-down clinic has served the rural community for 22 years, but faces bankruptcy. She takes no salary and has spent her inheritance keeping the clinic open, but money is running out and if it closes, her patients will have no doctor.
When a medical university plans to open a new health centre, Kinsell hopes they will offer affordable healthcare for all and employ her. But their fees are too high for her poorest patients, whom she will not abandon.
With an impending state election and the outbreak of COVID, Kinsell doesn’t give up, taking on extra jobs and appealing for support in the national media in the hope of saving her clinic.
The Only Doctor is a documentary film by Matthew Hashiguchi.

We Americans are sick of our healthcare system. It doesn’t matter if you’re on the right or the left we’re all sick of it. The CEOs have the blood of millions on their hands denying people claims .I watch my own family member go bankrupt and get denied cancer medications.

The debt we are all in is crazy I wish we had universal health care
I'm Swiss and it is crazy to me that an insurance can decline something like cancer medications. Makes me wonder why any American even pays for health insurance if they don't cover you when you need them.

We are very fortunate to have Dr. Kinsell. She will help anyone, any way she can.
No one talks about diet. We need to understand that most of the food in the corporate grocery chain stores do not nurture our bodies they make us sick.
YESSSS! People need to learn how to grow their own food or to read labels. My doctor once told me, “eating processed foods is like eating straight from the devil‘s kitchen.”
I agree both issues need to be address! Processed food make us sick and Health insurience sucks.

This is very true. I am one of those immigrants. I was healthy before, but after living here for 13 years, I was diagnosed with kidney disease.

What a disgraceful indictment on the richest country on earth that so many of their own citizens are living in such dire conditions when there is so much wealth. It’s heartbreaking.
Never forget there's a reason we measure wealth the way we do - a high GDP looks good on paper, but what good does it do the lower income 50% that the top 1% has all that money? They use GDP so it isn't obvious right away that the US has immense income and wealth inequality and so that people keep believing that the current system is working, even though so many people can't afford the health care they need (50%!!) and the life expectancy of poor people is around 15 years shorter than that of rich people. And yet so many people believe the propaganda by the insurance companies that they would be worse off with single payer health care because of "long wait times"? Even if that were true (it really isn't, and the few people who even have short wait times are the ones who can afford to and will continue to be able to pay for private care) - isn't it worth more to us as a society to not have people who can't get any healthcare at all?
Like a third world country. Except, that even there there is a likely universal health care system. Our doctors’ offices and disappearing , our local newspapers are disappearing, our local groceries too. The common denominator, monopoly capitalism and greed.

Wow, the fact that all those patients of hers died really got to me🥺 she sounds like a lovely person that is useful, talented and thoroughly loved by so many! That IS what makes one's life "happy".❤
I'm age 74. i have lived in cities, in poor rural America (where we had to drive more than an hour to get seen) and a small upper end community. Everywhere there are PCP shortages and the wait to see a specialists is 3 to 6 months. I have found that the only way to get decent health care is to go to a Functional Medicine Physician AND PAY FOR IT OUT OF POCKET. This the only way to have high quality care and any control of it To think that the county, state or government is going to rescue this clinic or these people is, unfortunately a dream.

Service to mankind is service to God. This doctor is a very kind soul. I wish her a good health and I wish there were more doctors like her in the USA.
