    My mother who was born in 1917 was arrested in the late 1930s for wearing pants in public! My sister and I used to laugh when she told this story but she had kept a newspaper clipping that told the story. Sadly it had disappeared years ago after one of the many times we had to move as my Father was a 35 year army and Air Force veteran. As a side note she was also an excellent hunter and fisher having once bagged a black bear in Maine, a 18 pointer she had mounted and countless other bucks with 14 to 18 points. We lived in the Catskill Mountains of upstate NY with 75 acres. My mother would hunt all year long, I was born in 1959 and my sister in 1953. The times I remember were from around 1963 onward. There was just not any law enforcement around so my mother kept a salt block behind the house which attracted many unlucky bucks. Countless times we were woken up at night to help my mom drag some big stag to the cold room where four or five deer hung! You also have to remember she was a petite woman who only stood 5 foot 2 and less than 140 pounds. It's hard these days to realize how bad women were treated in those days regardless of whether they were rich or poor.

    A little known fact is when a prop kid on set he met and learned alot from Wyatt Earp from Tombstone fame, then a advisor on western movies and Wayne tried to from then portray a Earp like cowboy and used that as his inspiration.

But that’s the thing about it. You can be doing great for a long time. Then one day, you fined your worse. I found out my cancer had gotten worse. I can not get out of bed sometimes. I’m drained and weak and I don’t know how much timed you have.that’s the worst .

    The “hyphenated American” quote @11:10 was actually Wayne’s way of saying he didn’t care for race labels like “African-American or Asian-American”, and that minorities who had prospered in this country should instead just call themselves “Americans” as the land they immigrated from or their ancestors immigrated from didn’t do anything for them so why bring it up. It really was a lesson in inclusion and tolerance.

    • @Honkshoo_honkshoo_zzz
      @Honkshoo_honkshoo_zzz ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dude, he was notoriously racist. I will never understand why some people insist on doing these sorts of mental gymnastics because they refuse to believe anything negative could possibly be true about someone they like.
      You know who one of my all-time favorite modern actors was? Kevin Spacey. Hell, I also liked Bill Cosby, and those are just a couple of the public figures i looked up to in the past.
      But you know what? Whenever I find out that they aren't good people, I change my opinions on them. Sure, it's disappointing when you find out they suck, but I'm not going to lie to myself about it.

    I love the movie he was in, I don’t remember the name. But he took a bunch of kids not little kids but maybe 13-14. But he taught the kids how to shoot well and act like men and to be tough. There was some people who wanted John and the kids cared about him.There was a gang of men coming after him , the boys were dressed as adults and looked like them. When the gang came, they thought there were more men. Then they started shooting and took the gang didn’t know what was happening the kids and him took care of the gang .

    I adore classic movies. It makes me curious if those people were aware of facts. For instance when John Wayne talks about Native Americans was he aware of all the abuses that group of people were STILL suffering from. I was an avid reader and loved history but I was only recently made aware of children being removed from their homes and forced into schools others insisted was better for them. In what way I have absolutely no idea. I believe politicians have been shady from the beginning. Almost always putting personal gain before anything or anyone.

    • @UnderTheMillkyWay
      @UnderTheMillkyWay 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's hard to say what others knew because who knows what was really taught to them considering we've seen so much happen over the last 7 years. I mean they are still teaching (for some) that Christopher Columbus discovered America. It's kinda hard for him to discover America when people were already living in this country. One thing I do know is most history is lie because it's written by the winner and that to me means we get to hear what they want us to and even now definitions are being changed because the real definitions hurt people's feelings. It really makes the saying people that don't know their history are doomed in repeating it one big eye roll.

    • @nevermind19700
      @nevermind19700 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. Native Americans completely got a raw deal. This was their land , but we are not the first, nor last Country to treat indigenous people poorly. Canada has a terrible history of abuse against indigenous children. They have found mass graves near schools where indigenous children were forced to live and work.

    • @J.R.in_WV
      @J.R.in_WV 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s highly doubtful Wayne knew much of native issues that wasn’t published in history books or films of the time. You have to remember documentaries only started taking off in the 70’s, by which time the Duke was an old man, and there was ZERO access to the internet as is the case today. To be ignorant of certain sad truths back then wasn’t an option, you only had access to the information in front of you.

    Joan Crawford always looked like Gregory Peck in drag. This may sound rude, but I always thought this. Although Gregory Peck was a fabulous person and actor, Joan had such masculine features, I never found her attractive or feminine. Now I realize it was my intuition picking up on her Narcissist Personally Disorder energies. Thus the "Mommy Dearest" reality.
