This is such an underrated video man! Thanks! Such a great explanation.
I think the 7840HS is a better buy mostly because of its low power draw, and good thermals
Thanks for the clear presentation!
Thanks mate. You really help me ❤
This was such a great video. Kudos to you man.
Thanks for the review this was actually a really big eye opener for me
AMD Desktop users will know this. On desktops that 10-15W doesn't matter at all... but on laptops it's a huge deal (so in terms of HX processors, Intel has slightly better battery life).
So bottomline is, for performance buy 12 core or 16 core Ryzen HX (most people buying these won't care about battery life) or buy 6 core or 8 core Ryzen HS chips for the best battery life and great performance as well.

wow this a great video on this i went with the 7840hs subscribed
This is a great explainer for the differences between HX and HS. But I'd argue the lack of a battery life for the 78/7945HX is not a flaw as such, but a consequence of the performance you're getting from it. That said, if you don't need that performance and 6/8 cores is enough for you, then the HS are a better buy. -- For my case: I have to operate off of two different continents for months at a time and my work is both CPU/GPU intensive = plus I have an 'office' setup in each location I need to be. Since I can't carry around a desktop but want as much power as I can get, and since I just need a brick powerhouse to throw on my desk and never truly need to worry about battery life: the 7945HX is perfect for me.
Seriously, my biggest issue right now is that I wish the 7900m had come out (and had availability) months ago because I would have loved to have an all AMD setup because Nvidia is being pretty damn evil this year.
Either way you have to admit it's pretty amazing that AMD were able to get so much from what is essentially a low-power version of a full desktop CPU and keep it stable.
You are coming to the same conclusion as me. If you are buying dragon range HX parts for performance- stick with 12 Core and 16 Core 7845HX/7945HX.
The 6 and 8 core 7645HX/7745HX is pointless when compared to the corresponding HS parts.
But at the end of the day, I would still like AMD to overcome the IOD power drain or make a more than 8 core monolithic part.
Yeah it was/is limited or no availability for AMD. AMD Phoenix gaming was rare and expensive here. AMD graphics only had Radeon RX 7600s available for 7000 series until last month. I saw 7900M Alienware is here. I hope they don't sell out as it is hard for people looking. I've never seen a 7700s 7600m or 7600m XT available for actual sale or even reviewed.
@@gregweber6274 yeah, and the issue with Alienware is… they are garbage build quality and I’ve never seen one with a good paste job. Easily the worst build quality of any “premium” brand. If they are the only 7900m option for too long they will just continue to give AMD a bad name because they won’t consistently perform at the limits of their hardware.
Very nice video, thanks for the breakdown, the temperatures on 7745HX, that I've seen in other videos (up to 102C) make sense now. R7 7840HS is the best CPU for a laptop right now imo, such a well-balanced and efficient chip. It exactly matches 13700H, but you can limit its power a lot with only a small impact on performance, which I would take any day for a longevity's sake. Intel finally has their answer with the Ultra line-up, but it's not quite mature yet and the price is high.
You can limit the 7745HX as well to a low wattage and still get great performance. But due to the nature of it's architecture design, you can't improve it's battery life much.
7745HX's strength is double the L3 cache and it should be put in laptops with RTX 4080 and 4090. It's a far better CPU for gaming than 7840HS but it's potential is wasted in 4070 laptops and is meaningless imo due to the poor battery life.
Great video! I’m considering Legion Slim 5 7840HS but it is a lot more expensive than Legion Pro 5 7745HX in Japan! It is nearly +USD500 with the same 240Hz display, 32GB RAM, RTX 4070 and 1TB SSD🙁
By the way, do you have any ideas why the more power efficient AMD CPU especially the Dragon runs warmer than Intel? I wonder this is caused by of smaller area of die-size that contacts the heat sink?
There are several reasons. Smaller 5nm die, more density, lesser cores than Intel but pushed way harder in terms of clock speeds. But 7045HX can be very cool if don't aim for the peak 10% of performance. If you are okay to leave that top 10% performance, you'll get drastically better efficiency at 45W and way cooler temps and still hit that 5GHz clock.
For example: 7945HX at 125W scores 34k on CBR23 at 95C, but at 65W it scores 30k on the same benchmark at 65C. So efficiency lowers with higher power. Intel has the opposite effect, so Intel always needs high power and fan noise to get good performance. AMD can still perform great at lower power and lower fan noise.
Also we cannot really compare the temp readings of AMD vs Intel. AMD reports the hottest point on the chip and is rated to run at 95C 24x7. You'll notice that despite high temps, AMD doesn't throttle.
Regarding laptop choices, the only OEM that paired pheonix range with RTX 4080/90 is Asus with the Zephyrus G14 and so it's my favorite laptop.
7745HX + 4070 makes no sense, because the 4070 is a weak card, the 7745HX can't flex it's cache advantage.
So try to search for Acer Nitro 7840HS + 4070 or Asus TUF 7940HS + 4070. The 7840HS and 7940HS are really similar, but 7940HS can be undervolted making it even more crazy efficient.
Salary rises in 1000s every year-while laptop prices rise by 30000s every year.I am thinking what is the point in investing in overpriced machines like this?!
Well that's not the topic of this video but you are kind of right. That's why I have laptop recommendation videos guiding viewers towards better value for money models.
I wouldn't invest more than 120k in an RTX 4060 laptop, if the laptop is a normal gaming laptop.
khub bhalo video, thank you
Great video! I'm thinking either Legion 5 Slim (7840hs + 4060) [SG$2,139.00] & Legion 5 Pro (7745hx + 4060) [SG$2,249.00]. Both units are the ready to ship models. Right now there is a sale on the lenovo site in Singapore and the difference between the two is about SG$110. My only concern is that the 5 slim comes with the 350 nits screen, whereas the 5 pro comes with the 500 nits screen. just afraid that the 350 nits screen might be a bit too dim. Could you please advise?
To me 300 nits is good enough. I wouldn't buy a 7745HX due to terrible battery life.
@@DeepteshLovesTECH And if isn't for battery life and all with 4060,Slim 5 /7-7840hs vs Pro 5-7745HX witch is all in all a better laptop at the same price , or really worth Pro 5-7945HX for 180£ extra?
@@nrogo I think the 7840HS is perfect for a 4060, you honestly don't need a more powerful CPU to run that card well enough. And if you don't care about the battery life then Intel performs better. Of course, this is after completely overlooking the power efficiency, in raw horsepower intel gives you more power. But again, unless you need your machine for CPU intensive workloads, 7840HS is more than enough.
Thanks I was thinking the same thing. I found that nobody was talking about the battery life, and these are bloody 'laptop' processors which affect battery life a lot.
Yea, the 7045HX is actually not a laptop AMD processor, it's a desktop processor. And AMD's traditional laptop processors and desktop processors are not the same. One is monolithic while the desktop is chiplet based.
I added quotes so I don't mislead they are laptop processor designs. I kept text the same so your comments value shows.
Recently bought legion 5 pro with ryzen 7745hx and rtx 4060. Yes the cpu temps go straight to 100C in cinebench r23 multicore.

Hi Bro, I have bought legion 5 PRO with ryzen 7745HX with rtx4070 but suffering from high thermals while gaming but its not throttling the temps are around 85-90 with 55-60w tdp (don't know why it draws this much) in GPU intensive games GPU is super cool. I wanted to undervolt this CPU, the AATU doesn't support 7000series cpus and crashes whenever i open it. Please tell any way i can undervolt and i don't have any expertise on lenovo vantage. Please suggest
The 7745HX doesn't throttle because that is the way it's supposed to run. Intel's reason of throttling is different from AMD's reason of throttling.
But you can set the 7745HX in the Lenovo Vantage software to run at 35-40W or you can undervolt it as well.

can you undervolt ryzen 7 7840hs using Universal Tuning Utility (UTU) ? please answer
7940HS is confirmed to be undervolted.
Not sure about 7840HS.
Although the performance per watt is already too good at 45W-55W.
I was wondering why my lenovo legion 5 pro with 7745hx is only getting 3 hours of battery life even after doing every battery saving technichs. I was think about manually reducing the amount of current cpu can access using ryzen master. Will it give more battery life ???
You can do everything you can and may be increase the battery life to max 4hrs... but nothing more.
The problem is the I/O die has to be always active for anything and everything and that consumes a decent amount of power.
To me the 7745HX only makes sense with an RTX 4080/90 GPU as it's main advantage is a lot of cache, else it's pointless.

same bro, 7745hx is getting way too hot so I'm still waiting for more reviews.
i7 or ryzen7 will perform same tbh, not much diff. ram is much faster in and version.
everything is confusing for me too xd.
we can maintain temp in 7745hx by locking it and we probably wont see much diff either ways as its too powerful already.
@@KuroKami07 same here but I finally made the decision.
Will go for the slim one
I know I will miss the 500nits screen and RGB keyboard
But Lower Temps >>> everything
@@sampadkar19 that's great to hear.
Low temp are always the best.
I'll buy in 1-2 months so i have time to decide.
I just hope to see reviews of 7745HX RTX 4060 one, if locking cpu temp at 85°C with hardly much performance loss then I'll buy it.
Otherwise I'll have to choose other one like slim.
@@KuroKami07bro you can lock the CPU to 45W and not see any difference in performance and temps stay in 80C or lower range. These CPUs only get hot when you are pushing it for the last 5% of performance.
Would Intel 13 gen make more sense for upper budget users if they want performance? It got lower ideal draw, better performance in many professionals softwares because of more support generally, Good enough performance to not notice much difference & More cores over Ryzen 7000 HX series
7945HX > 13980HX
7845HX > 13700HX
13700HX > 7745HX (overall 10-12% lead).
13500HX > 7645HX (overall 20% lead).
Intel right now is KING of MID-RANGE. I would pick AMD over Intel in the high end due to less throttling in longer workloads.
And definitely AMD wins in the H series due to substantially better performance/watt (even in HX series but AMD's HX series has that Idle power draw).

I would love the extra performance of 4070 but then again the 7745hx with those temps & battery life has put me in a dilemma.
7745HX only makes sense with an RTX 4080/4090. You have to change your laptop choice or stick with 4060. I don't even think 4070 is worth it, more money but still only 8GB of VRAM.
