This Canadian City Is The Anti-Asian Hate Crime Capital of North America

  • It’s said to be the most Asian city outside Asia. Where a quarter of residents speak a Chinese language and the char siu rivals what’s served in Hong Kong barbecue shops. Where a Sikh gurdwara, a Tibetan monastery, and a Chinese evangelical church coexist in harmony along a 3-kilometer stretch of road dubbed the Highway to Heaven. The kind of place that should be immune to a rise in pandemic-fueled racism.
    Vancouver has been anything but.
Last year, more anti-Asian hate crimes were reported to police in Vancouver, a city of 700,000 people, than in the top 10 most populous U.S. cities combined. With almost 1 out of every 2 residents of Asian descent in British Columbia experiencing a hate incident in the past year, the region is confronting an undercurrent of racism that runs as long and deep as the historical links stretching across the Pacific.
Covid-19 was the trigger. But the resentment had been building for decades. Few cities have been so visibly transformed by Asian immigration-and money-as Vancouver, a struggling industrial backwater that morphed into a glittering cosmopolis of luxury condos and designer boutiques. The disproportionate rash of incidents has raised an unsettling question: Maybe Vancouver isn’t the bastion of progressive multiculturalism it thinks it is.
“Covid has just revealed what’s always been there,” says Trixie Ling, 38, a Taiwan-born immigrant who runs a nonprofit called Flavours of Hope that assists refugee women. She was accosted in May 2020 by a man who spewed a stream of racist and sexist insults before spitting in her face. “There is so much anti-Asian racism in our past that carries through.”
The backlash against the broader Asian community started almost as soon as the virus began spreading beyond China in early 2020, with Vancouver seemingly poised to become an epicenter. The city had more direct flights with mainland China than any other in the Americas or Europe. A local businessman flying home from Wuhan became British Columbia’s Case 1 on Jan. 26, among the first detected outside Asia at the time.
Months later, it would become clear that route wasn’t, in fact, the principal cause of the virus’s spread in the area: Epidemiological studies showed that the primary source of infections was strains from Europe, eastern Canada, and Washington state.
But in the early weeks of the pandemic, simply looking Asian and wearing a mask in Vancouver triggered verbal assaults-“Virus spreaders,” “Go back to China,” “Stop stealing masks from front-line workers.” The attacks quickly escalated: One 92-year-old was hurled out of a convenience store to the sidewalk; a woman was punched in the head at a downtown bus stop in broad daylight. Vandals repeatedly defaced statues and buildings in Chinatown with racist graffiti.
In 2020, Vancouver police documented 98 anti-Asian hate crimes, an eightfold increase from the prior year. That was triple the number recorded in New York, which logged the most of any U.S. city, according to police data collected by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University at San Bernardino.
Of course, most incidents go unreported. An April 9 survey by Vancouver-based pollster Insights West revealed that 43% of British Columbia residents of Asian descent say they experienced a racist incident in the past year, ranging from racial slurs to property damage to physical assault. And almost half say they believe the racism will get worse. Another report in September found that Canada per capita had a higher incidence of anti-Asian racism than the U.S., with British Columbia topping the list.

I used to think Canadians were laid back, polite, and cool. Now this crap starts up and shows me Canada is the same as the screwed up USA. I know there are many sane and kind people in both countries but it blows me away that Vancouver is just as bad, if not worse, Oakland. So sad. Racism lives everywhere.

WolfRun59 Canada is much worse and the hate crimes data proves it.
For example, Canada registered 265 anti-black hate crimes for every 1 million black Canadians in 2020 (versus a mere 62 for every 1 million black Americans in the USA).
That means a black Canadian is more than 4 times more likely to be the victim of an anti-black hate crime than a black American!

Makes me sad this goes on here and anywhere. Why is it we can walk through a flower garden and love and appreciate all the different flowers? Why is it we can appreciate all the beautiful gems pulled from our earth? Why is it we can appreciate all the different birds too? However some people suffer from rigidity and want to pick a fight. Racism is ugly it really is. Hate is adding to the problem love is adding to the solution. Each day we can choose to appreciate each other: hold a door open, smile say hello, thank someone for kindness. It goes a long long way spreads good will. Canada is a big country and room for all.

Alot of the anti hate crimes happen in highly Asian populated places. San Francisco for an example used to own the title of having highest Chinese population outside of China and most of the viral footages we see come from incidences in Sf. Particular, downtown and Chinatown and also Asian residential neighborhoods. It doesn’t make sense to me. You’d think a criminal would do these acts where there is less Asians, but they happen in places where there are other Asians around. Either way, this is disturbing. As a Chinese American myself, I haven’t been out as much because of the anti Asian hate crimes and I especially warn my mom who happens to be the target demographic.

I think the notion of supremacy has resulted in racism as we see it today. A lot of human atrocities have been committed because of this. Let us not forget the mass graves of native children or the relentless persecution of the Jewish people. I don't think any country in the world is exempt from racism in some form or other. We classify people as Asian American or Asian Canadian, etc. That is racist too. But the display of hatred and differentiation based on a false sense of superiority is disconcerting.

Keep in mind all the legally-embedded policies which severely restricted immigration to Canada since the 19th c. before the national railway was even built remained well in place until the late 1980/90s (original outright ban with the 'chinese exclusionary act' and reprehensibly expensive 'head tax' to even come). Inherited intergenerational trauma of extreme racial prejudice when (grand)parents first came to Canada remains strong even in the kids. Further, having the succeeding generations grow up with persistence of subtle racial undertones rooted in harmful stereotypes (ref. model minority) only serves to re-inforce this ugly cycle. At best, mild prejudice and at worst, explicit and volatile actualization of targeted racism. Sounds awfully familiar to our neighbours south of the border.

Yes, there is apathy towards certain ethnic groups; but it is justified, as many people have had certain negative experiences with said groups. Yes, many are great individuals, but, as a whole, they exploit our resources and wear down our society with unscrupulous practices and an unwillingness to follow our rules.

Reported crimes is not the actual number of crimes.
    We report in Vancouver.
    All crimes.
    We love VPD.
More reports means more people making the call and following through with the charges.
I am white, 62 and recovering from a violent assault in my senior's apartment.
    January 1.
    Six months later...
Still waiting for the court to get something done.
    Nicholson Tower.
This is why victims don't report crime.

Okay so a couple of things to clarify here... No one is pissed off at a bunch of Chinese Canadians making a bunch of honest money and becoming wealthy. The reality is there are billionaires from China trying to divest their vast fortunes out of the control of the CCP and will buy up a lot of condos and properties all over Vancouver. They wont live in them or rent them in a period where theres a severe shortage of housing. So ya theres a bunch of people pissed off at billionaires from another country (doesn't matter where, just happens to be Chinese billionaires in Vancouver) who have jacked up the price of housing so actual Canadians including Chinese Canadians cant afford to live in their own city anymore. The other stat not discussed in this video is the fact that its not white supremacists attacking asian people across Canada and USA, its almost entirely black Canadian and black Americans who are guilty of these racist attacks. Im half black and I see the racist attitude towards asians all the time, and whites. Its an important detail that needs to be clarified if we're ever going to take meaningful steps at stopping it. The change needs to start in the communities that it comes from.

First, there is no such thing as a model minority. That's a trick used to keep you submissive towards them but have hostility towards other ethnic groups. This a fantasy. I'm a African-Americans(Foundational Black American) and I befriended an Asian woman from Canada when we both worked in the medical field. We were a part of a larger group of new employees working in a certain area. I was the only African-Americans(Foundational Black American) and she was the only Asian woman(from Canada). I was personable by nature or sociable; even as a young child. I saw first hand how those American Caucasians within our young professional group treated her differently. I didn't seek or needed their approval so I had fun regardless. But, I saw how they purposely tried to exclude her so I backed away from them to be her friend. I thought if I was in another country I would want someone to befriend me with pure intentions. When her mom arrived from Canada she was so kind and was respectful. Her mom treated me like her favorite niece:) I would pick her up on Saturdays so we could create fun for ourselves as young professionals. When I got into an accident, Connie came to pick me up for work and dropped me back at my home until my car was fixed. I will never forget her nor she mom's kind. She eventually went back to Canada after about five years but I hope life has been kind to her. BTW, she introduced me to high quality sushi and I introduced her to American culture(fun and clean/ innocent.
I will say: A person from The West can not purchase any businesses nor property in China. A non-Chinese can only purchase property with the assistance of another Chinese person as a partner or spouse. I think this includes most parts of Asia and not just China. So there is a double standard of Westerners. In my opinion I think The West is now protecting themselves from potential foreign invaders. When it came to the Japanese being removed from the west coast and placed into camp away from American society it was because Japan dropped a b*mb on Pearl Harbor and Japan had a cruel habit of trying to invade and takeover various societies including Hong Kong. I will say when the King of Hawaii was overthrown, a lot of Asians were bought in to work the fields and open up small businesses. Most people don't realize that the native Hawaiians are Black not Asian. Today, when a person thinks of Hawaii a person would assume that Hawaiians are ethnically Asian but this isn't the case. The last king of Hawaii I would describe as a dark skin man with thick coiled hair. His children looked mixed but he definitely was a Black negro man.

boo hoo. I worked for a majority black workplace and was bullied. Hate doesn't just apply to minorities. Whenever you find a person who hates another cultural group, you can bet your bottom dollar they have been treated poorly by that group. And blacks are the worst bullies. They pick up on weakness and exploit it. That's what many culture are wary of them.

Hate against anyone is terrible. But it's also a very ugly part of human nature. People fear those who are of the outgroup, and in very white Canada Asians are a very noticeable outgroup. The large Chinese population in Vancouver is still very new, and if we're talking about Hong Kong Chinese who started to pour in money and buy property a long time ago, it was very under the radar until Hong Kong immigration started in earnest. They didn't want to live under Chinese rule when the handover happened in 1997. I think it irked a lot of white Vancouverites that a very wealthy group of foreigners who looked very different, spoke a different language, ate different foods, and had very different traditions, was becoming the economically dominant force. My own people, the Jews, have been targets of a very similar kind of hatred for centuries. On the one hand, people don't like us because we are different, but on the other hand they don't like us because we are economically successful. With tensions brewing between China and the US, I fear a return to the dark days of WW2 which Jews were persecuted in Europe and Japanese Americans and Canadians were also persecuted and placed in prison camps. While I don't think a US war with China will result in the same outcome, I fear the violence of hateful, racists in both the US and Canada. I hope people take a strong stand against it. As someone with family in Canada, I think Chinese Canadians have made Canada a much more interesting place. How could anyone not enjoy themselves in Vancouver or Toronto? People need to find common ground.

Better regulations need to be placed on foreign purchases regarding of real-estate. It is very naive to take the very lax measures Canada has as a xenophobic problem in comparison to how asian countries (china/japan) regulate foreign property purchase within their own countries.
There is a very clear difference in denying/restrictions on someone because of their ethnicity vs foreign investment. Ie the former is despicable and the later is a measure to ensure equity remains in Canada and healthily redistributed within the economy over time.
If buying/investing as a foreign individual in their countries there are a lot more measures to ensure equity remain in their countries. i.e. not just through paper work/ de jure, but defacto cultural norms that severely limit procurement/opportunity of directions that are viable to you.
In general I hate house flipping/landlord for profit culture so better regulation across the board as needed.
But I am somewhat soured from to many anecdotal accounts of acquaintances/passerby bragging/having no quams about using property in Canada as
Investments for their lifestyles/ spending in their own country.
There is definitely a legacy to create a “white race” to maintain economic dominance in the americas but remember the countries being discussed have done the same in their own countries… unfortunately that is how they formed their countries too, and generally as the majority in their own country, and businesses men look at investment/ the game just the same.
So in this video there seems to be a few different points being meshed together as just xenophobia or racism, I don’t think that is the case. I do think more nationalist views should be applied to housing and for people to understand the clear differences.

Having said that, racist attacks are violent crimes including spitting. The pinishment for any racists attack should be really severe. The real estate speculation and the rise in prices are the problems of greedy canadian politicians. Foreign investment should not harm the local people and Canada made a big mistake by encourging this. Tons and tons of money in Vancouver and towns are around it owned by big chinese money. Western corporations invest all over the world in real estate and many other sectors alike. If there's no vice versa freedom of investment, global economy would quickly collapse, and West would quickly loose this source of wealth and will have more problems on hands than just housing. Housing is an earned privilege, a reward from hardwork, not a right. Politicizing it only interfere with the free market of simple demand and supply. Foreign capital injection enters Canadian hands anyway and get circulate around into Canadian economy. Without this source of wealth, there are more problems like economic downturn, unemployment, standard of living gona go down the bin. Racism is racism. Using housing as an excuse to deflect from deeply embedded racism is just low and obvious.

As we say in Belgium, le Systeme nord américain me fait chier! This is why:
As a European, I find The issue with Vancouver (and Canada are the following):
1.it has become so much expensive while the salaries are so-so
    2. More and more people are becoming like robots
    3. Talking to strangers is not normal!!! For me coming from Europe (Belgium), this is very strange!!!!
    4. Public transport suck!!!! (It is only good enough for people who have never left Canada)
    5. The healthcare service is better than the US but is a disaster when compared to Europe… and even to some African countries (I have worked in west Africa for the French government in the past and believe me…. There u can have access to doctors on the spot.. no wait, no stupid triage systems!!); in fact here in Canada, the system is free but what I don’t understand is that it treats people (including Canadians like crap). Just in March 2022, I remember coming to a clinic and we were told it was full! Another poor elder lady came in (a Canadian) and she was told to visit another clinic… she started to complain as it has been the 6th clinic she had visited and still telling her to go away!!! FREE???? I prefer by far African healthcare (try Botswana or even Senegal!!! You willl be surprised at how bad the Canadian one is!!!!!) and I have included a video at the bottom about doctors in this strange country
    6. If you have a kid with a special need (like a daughter of my colleague at work), a city like Vancouver has just 2 or ..3. Schools for special need children!!! My colleague told me both of those schools love money sooo much and quality services are far from their priority!!! But yes, Vancouver, a big city has just 2’of them!!’ How stupid is that!
    7. Linked with the above, if you have a kid with condition, daycares find a way not to “welcome” then as it costs them a lot or they do not have the ressources!! So my question is: how can both parents work if daycares “refuse” kids like these? And actual even if you have a healthy kid, daycares in BC cost just sooo much as compared to Quebec for example! In the US (a country that Canadians love to point at), such daycare exist to allow parents to look for money!!! Canada, the overrated country… just slap yourself!!!
    8. Same for insurances for cars!!!! In BC it is a monopoly (and a real scam) whereas in Quebec car insurance is way way cheaper!
    9. Many Girls here in vans are interested for most of them… reason: cost of living! Not astonishing why we have so many sugar-papas here.
    10. A society that likes to point out south when it comes to systemic racism when actually it has very few coloured CEO’s or people in high responsibility roles!!! America has race issues for sure but in many instances, Americans are much inclined to give power to a person of colour!!! Why… may be because of the civil right movements in the US…
    11. People here have been raised to get INDEBTED and they are taught to spend, SPEND and Spend!!! The whole North American system is based on debt and banks get rich out of people being in debt!!! I am such in a hurry to fly back to Europe!!!
    12. Unlike Europeans, North Americans and Canadians are taught to be productive, work more and not complain (unlike us Belgians or french). This has made Canadians frustrated in the inside and this frustration comes out under things like abusive language, abusive driving, binge drinking, abusing drugs and even …. Terrible behaviour that are not worth mentioning here as they are terrible to be stated for a country that claims itself to be part of G7!
    13. Pensions are soooo low compared to Belgium or Germany and even if you have RRSP, chances are you won’t save much anyway and cost of living will always be increasing!!! Now, I am not astonishing why so many Canadians flock into medical, Costa Rica or even Argentina!!!! And guess what… so many narrow minded people here want immigrants (yes all of us) to stay up here when many Canadians flee the country! I would leave any way!
    14. People are so lonely and have issues making friends!!! Result: many Canadians are depressed!
    15. Vancouver is gloomy, grey and rainy at least 300 days a year!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now some still say it is not bad but trust me… it sucks and this is surely why so many are on weed here in BC , not sure how people are in the east though
    16. Their phone companies and internet companies are greedy and their services cost so much! Phone companies here in Canada are crooks and keep sucking money out of customers!!! Plans are scams and those companies are just interested in making profits!!!
    17. Canadian Banks are greedy just like in America! Their online system usually is unreliable and stops working suddenly for any reason! Many times, I tried to wire money from one account to another and many times, this service did not even work!!! Having lived in Western Africa for 5 years, I have almost ever come across similarly things!
    18. People in Vancouver are always in a hurry for nothing and seem to be anxious, nervous and in a bad mood all the time! I have gone to Buenos Aires and Mexico a few years ago but despite the “lower income” in those countries, people seemed to be more joyful and amicable!
    19. More and more drivers are impatient and behave like morons! Once I was s’imposer that I apologized in French (on purpose)! He had no say and Eve if he did, my car is in a bad shape so… I don’t think he would have dared to do anything physical! A few times I honked P-P-P - P-P which is an outrage (go and lick the *** of your ****er in a country I used to live in but which obviously is not in North America. Obviously any abusive driver here would ask himself what the heck but would have no idea even though I know he is aware it is not a compliment!
    20. Unlike places like New Zealand or the US, this country keeps making publicity as having a top quality of life but what quality of life can you get with the cost of living in Toronto or Vancouver????? Unless may be you earn a lot like some privileged Canadians who have bought properties before the “crazy time” or who have huge amount of money to sleep on!
    21. There are jobs but those jobs are mainly low paid (like the one the link below) and low level jobs: cashier, call center jobs, delivery jobs, working inside cold rooms at 5 am, jobs that require you to stand up, deal with lousy customers, jobs that very few locals want to do. Unlike the US employers, many Canadian employers keep using the lack of Canadian experience to refuse you a “good role”. This is why so many skilled migrants are leaving this country! They are being asked for lots of qualifications when applying but once here, many are given jobs that stand so far from their qualifications!!! Result: many are angry (like me) and many also leave or .. plan to leave anyway (like me). So if Canada wants to retain migrants here, they need to tell their employers and corporations to do better jobs with this stupid and useless Canadian experience excuse!
    22. My project: leave Canada as soon as I can as staying here in this strange place is just … a trap! It is a financial trap (you just spend your days repaying credit cards and interests), you just work work work and buy groceries!!!! It is also a emotional trap as people here are stuck up and are so closed up to themselves!!! Many are so anti-social!!! Not astonishing why so many laugh by themselves or talk to themselves in the transit!!!! I thought africa had real problems (as I was working there for almost 5 years) but I think Canada is now getting worse day by day!
    23. This is how the country’s airline company treats its employees www.simplyhired.ca/company/Air%20Canada
    24. Video on doctors in Canada: Canada.
    th-cam.com/video/GSTTZ7mtwKc/w-d-xo.html
And this is a vid about a woman whose perception of the Healthcare has changed:
    th-cam.com/video/KjrteSX8nWw/w-d-xo.html
And this also happens in Canada
    th-cam.com/video/fvvBIBE3Ee4/w-d-xo.html
INCROYABLE!!!! In Europe, it would probably never happen and I would say Canada does not deserve to sit in the G7 country!!! Smaller Countries like New Zealand or Australia (more efficient than Canada on so many levels, I have heard even though I have ever been there) are probably better candidates!!!
Ohhhh and Last important thing!!! In Canada, if you need an ambulance (sometimes some paramedics would ask you if you need one if you ever get a malaise outside), the ambulance COSTS MONEY (no… in France or Belgium it is FREE!!!) and the persons around you will not tell you it actually costs money. So basically if you fall or get unconscious on the street, they will call an ambulance and a few weeks later, you will get an invoice sent to your address (the amount is around 1,500 dollars to 2,500 dollars sometimes!). If if you can go home by yourself, go home and DO NOT call an ambulance!! You just give them money!

r u referring to asians & east indians in CANADA because that’s mos def NOT really true in other parts of the world. the recent violence by muslims against christians in pakistan is a case in point. & all based on a lie to boot. if ‘asians’ (always a vague term at best) includes japan, they have such a high of sexual assaults against women that there r separate subway cars for women. it’s an oddly disconnected choice of words you’ve used. ever heard of the “tongs”? plenty of TH-cam videos about that. & the 3 worst mass shootings of chinese (Asian) ppl in america were perpetrated by ‘ASIAN’ men. the fundamental problem IS the human male regardless of color.

Your pov is biased. Canadian people also experience hatred and discrimination from minority groups. I know people who worked in majority minority environments and were bullied and victimized. It's never about color or identity, but ignorance. When a person does not feel secure or does not understand rational thought and lack empathy, there will be ignorance and hatred. It happens across race, gender and even within communities. The problem is not culture, the problem is ignorance.

Politicians have failed Vancouver. Violent Crime, Pollution, Terrorism, and Racism are the only 4 viable paths left to Affordable housing. And off those 4 paths, 3 paths are just variations on suicide.
The rising movement that is being noticed, shows a desperate people taking to that last remaining path. Not to Thrive, nor to feed an ego, nor establish any sort of dominance. They take this path, merely, To Survive, To not be wiped out, To not be replaced from the only home they've ever known.
High Trust Societies (like the west) have no Social Defense against the Immigration of Low Trust Peoples (Non Religious Mainland Chinese). At critical mass of influx, which Vancouver has reached, the city becomes a simmering pot brewing the next perfect Hitler Nursery. And so ticks silently the Calm before the storm.

Some Canadians see their cities being taken over by the so-called foreigners (Asians). About 20 or 30 years ago it was ok when wealthy Hong Kong citizen arrived, Canadian see their cities as bastions of freedom and places for refuge. But after while the Asians (wealthy mainland Chinese) starting to buy up and driving up the prices of real estate, now your average Canadian say what is happening here. The average Canadian cannot buy a house in area where they, their parents and grandparents were born. Jealousy and resentment starting to build. Then the Coronavirus came along to create the perfect storm: Cities lockdown, economic downturns, Huawei executive detention (and subsequent Canadians detention in China), increase of pandemic related anger and frustration. Now, who or where do the angry, frustrated, some mentally disturbed people take out their frustrations on? The easy target: Asians, Asian Canadians, Asian Americans , and others.
RACIAL discrimination and hatred on Asians have always been there behind the smiling faces. Coronavirus pandemic just expose the cracks, stress, and fragility of the human society. Majority of Canadians and Americans are decent and God fearing people. But I don't see some of these people (both Canadians and Americans) marching for the BLM or other peace protests coming out to protest the Anti- Asians hates.

which is weird because technically the lands don't belong to anyone except the natives. The new world order we live in is done by the very group on the top today. The 1% that get rich by war, propaganda and hate. The best way is to adapt and retire somewhere nice hopefully with friendly, open minded and non violent people. The less people the better and more safe.
