How Cyndi Lauper became famous:
This is a story about a young woman who was born in Queens, NYC in 1953. Her mother and father divorced when she was 5. She loved music and started writing songs and playing guitar when she was 12. Her mother remarried.
She was different. Unusual. She colored her hair different colors and wore strange clothing. She spelled her name differently than what was given to her. She was expelled from high school. (later got her GED) She ran away from home at 17 because her stepfather was abusive. Eventually she ended up in Vermont taking some art classes at a school while working odd jobs
She played with a series of cover bands in the 1970's. She wasn't happy. She blew out her vocal chords and was told by doctors she was never going to be able to sing again. She regained her voice after taking a year off of singing with the help of a vocal coach.
She forms a new band. Gets a manager. Is offered deals to go solo but wanted to record with her band. Eventually they get a record deal. They make one album. It is reviewed well by critics but doesn't sell. The band breaks up. The manager sues them and wins. She goes bankrupt. She temporarily loses her voice again to a cyst on her vocal chords. She works crappy jobs in retail stores and restaurants while singing at clubs after regaining her voice. Eventually while singing at a local bar in NY she meets with a man who becomes her manager. He gets her signed to a recording contract as a solo artist and she makes an album. She is 30 years old.
The album is successful and makes her the first female solo artist to have four consecutive top 5 hits on the Billboard Top 100 list. It stays in the top 200 for 65 weeks and eventually sells 22 million albums. It gets nominated for 6 Grammy's and wins two including Best New Artist.
She appears on the covers of Rolling Stone, Time, Newsweek and People and is named as Ms. Magazine's Woman of The Year. The video for her first single is considered to be one of the most influential music videos of all time by MTV, VH1 and Rolling Stone.
The album is titled "She Is So Unusual". Her name is Cyndi Lauper.
Wow what a story
In the 80’s, you either paraded around as a Madonna wannabe or you loved Cyndi Lauper. I loved Cyndi because she’s so unusual 😉😌😍
I had to write an article on advising marketers how to appeal to different types of client. My editor wanted me to group them between "Cindy Crawfords" (those who were more classic or traditional) and "Cyndi Laupers" (clients who wanted wanted a more out of the box approach). That was an easy assignment. I was always a Cyndi in a world of Cindys.
Some of us preferred Siouxsie Sioux.
@@laurettelaliberte8864 I loved both of them.
So unusual...I saw what you did there lol.
Team Cyndi all the way. 👍🤩😍
Out of all the legendary voices on USA for Africa “we are the world“, one voice towered over them all and that voice was Cyndi Lauper. Absolute powerhouse
Steve Perry was slightly better IMO, I just wish he'd been given more to sing. Cyndi's definitely a close second, she should've had more lines as well. Way too much Bruce and Stevie, I love them but it was overload.✌️
@@EllaJay I agree that Steve Perry's voice was smooth and soulful but Cyndi made the best of what she was assigned and made it her own with conviction and resonance to the topic at hand
Yes! Her part in the bridge was always my favourite part of the song, ever since I first heard it upon its release. (I was a huge Cyndi fan and had a MASSIVE crush on her!)
Her voice is perfect imperfection.
True Colors, I Drove All Night & She Bop are my favorite songs from Cyndi. One of my favorite singers of All time.
True Colors is such a great song, what i love about Cyndi is that she so expressive with emotion in her voice, besides how powerful presence with her looks. Love her music & her unique style. One of a kind & great singer. I Drove All Night is one that i see in the comments, Another awesome song by her. All Through The Night live in Paris '87 Special, since it doesn't have a music video, one of my favorite songs from Cyndi lauper.
So well said👍🏾
Saw her in the 80s, 90s, 00s and 2010s. Her voice is still as good now as the first show I saw.
Lex actually did a respectable quick Cyndi Lauper impression for a moment there! A lady of many surprises, that Lex!
Glad you got to this one so quickly after the time after time. I regret I didn’t appreciate Cyndi when I was younger and was more of an adult before realizing her brilliance. And Lex imitating her “quiet talking voice” was both spot on AND adorable.
Me too.
Me three!
Lauper's good friend Gregory Natal had recently died of AIDS when Lauper heard the demo of the song. She was thinking of Natal when she came up with her approach to the vocal, particularly the soft, whispering sections. "I realized it had to be a voice that whispers to you, a voice that's almost childlike so it will speak to the softest, most gentle part of a human being. It's a voice whispering to you, telling you it's going to be OK."
Wow I had no idea. That’s so beautiful and sad.
She won a Grammy award for “I drove all night “ which is also next level.
Lexi nailed it. The guy didn't know what he heard.
She has quite the personality! You need to see some of her appearances on Johnny Carson. Classic!
I love this song. I agree you should listen to I Drove All Night. It's one of her best vocally.
Wife here..Love I drove all night..!
Cyndi didn't write "True Colors", but she certainly "interpreted" the song and made it her own. The song is about being one's true, authentic self, and the narrator/singer is offering their unconditional love and support. That being said, after losing a longtime male friend to AIDS in the early 80s and after discovering her sister was gay, Cyndi was more than happy to turn the song into an LGBT+ anthem. In the late 90s, Cyndi started the True Colors Fund when she discovered how many LGBT+ teenagers were homeless in New York, after fleeing abuse and/or being kicked out by their families. Many benefit concerts followed, with Cyndi headlining and other artists like Erasure and yes, Blondie, on the bill. Now, 25 years later there is a True Colors homeless shelter/ safe space for LGBT+ youth in New York, with plans to open more centers elsewhere. Besides being a huge talent, Cyndi is now an activist with a heart as big as her voice.
All Through the Night is my favorite song of hers. There are also some compilations of her best vocals on TH-cam that are MIND BLOWING.
"And once we STOP, the meter CLICKS!"
Never get tired of it!
@@sweepingpetals it’s Sooooooooo good.
“She Bop” and “the goonies are good enough” are great songs of hers
‘Girls just want to have fun’ is another huge hit by cyndi
Cyndi Lauper is awesome.
What you're probably hearing is her accent. If you ever watch an interview of her, you'll see she speaks with a mix of New York, and baby talk. It's very cute. I approve. 👍👍👋
Time after Times is my favorite Cindi Lauper song.
Range is what Cyndi had and still has!! True Colours is such an anthem still today. Who doesn't want to find and express themselves?
Wife here...Huuggge hit of the eighties!!..She was perfect for the eighties!!..Amazing song and musician!!
Cyndi Lauper is the quintessential artist. She's so quirky and totally unique.
Love the fit, Lex! Beautiful.
I Drove All Night will knock your socks straight off. She's fabulous.
I like how she sings this like a little kid. "Like a Wainbow" It makes it fun to sing.
One of only a few songs I consider beautiful…its one of my favorites and its saved my life on a number of occasions
I love her and her beautiful uniqueness!
She has personality! She is the real deal.
Loved being a teen in the 80’s I was more of a rocker but even our era’s pop kicked ass….Class of 1988…
What a beautiful and real girl 🤘❤️ never hid her brooklyn accent, which made her more endearing
Yeah, this is a good cut, no doubt. Cyndi's voice and personality are super alluring!
Brad & Lex, her "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and "She Bop" are next for you!! I remember playing her 45rpm record "She Bop" from when she was in the group Blue Angel on the radio station!
I'll add a vote for "She Bop! :) That's assuming you haven't done "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" yet, which should come first of course -- that's sort of her signature song.
She Bop!
I want Brad’s interpretation.
@@randallphobia8698 🤣🤣🤣
@@randallphobia8698 wanna see a black man blush, do ya? heh
You guys in the comments are awful.😆 I didn't know for years what this song is "really" about.
Cyndi Lauper's voice is utterly sublime.
Cyndi's cover of I'm Gonna Be Strong never fails to give me goosebumps. She is phenomenal.
Well, I'm convinced. The next time I'm feeling down, I'm calling Cyndi Lauper.
It was many years later that I had to admit this lady had an actual talent!
I was 15 when this "album" came out and I could not get it.
Now many years later I get it.
This was mega hit for Cyndi Lauper! The song has been used in so many commercials and it has been remade! Cyndi had an amazing and powerful voice and can really amp it up if she wants! Check out her hits, Time After Time, Money Changes Everything ,Change of Heart, Girls Just Want To Have Fun, and more! ❤️❤️
It's not a documentary, but if you have the time, TH-cam has her first interview with Johnny Carson where she talks about Captain Lou Albano and the PEG principle :) She went onto Letterman and other shows since and explained how Cpt Lou, a famous Wrestler who played her pappa in the Girls just want to have fun video, helped her out. :) It's the closest thing I've seen to a documentary, but I love her long life, career and everything about Cyndi :) From her young sining days to being the quirky Psychic on Bones, and her loving tribute to her friend Cher surprising her at one of the award ceremonies about her. :) Another good video is her appearance on Howard Stern :)
Before Howard Stern became a shill for the Establishment, back in the 1990s, there were some amazing live musical performances that came out of his small radio studio. One of the best was Cyndi doing True Colors with just a keyboard player and a violinist.

Now I want to see Lex's dance routine.
Such a lovely song and performance. You're looking very glam, Lex.
Cyndi was on WWF as a wrestling personality back in the 80s too!
One of the most important and beautiful songs of my generation.
IMO one oft the most beautiful songs ever.
When you were mine Live in "85 at the American Music Awards would show you what type of vocalist Lauper was in her prime. I highly recommend it.
Cyndi Lauper did three of the greatest songs of the 80s, Girls just wanna have fun, True Colours and Time after Time. I bought her album first time around too. Brilliant.
You don’t need to watch a documentary about her as you can still go see her perform. She is truly spectacular.
This is the song I dialed my system in on, Because if you can make this song sound right everything else you play will always sound perfect.
She was really popular in the 80s.... back when music videos were GREAT lol... She did girls just wanna have fun, time after time, all through the night, she bop and she was also one of the many singers involved in doing the We are the world song.
Love her, she has an incredible voice.
You should check out her 1st career. She became famous as a Pro wrestler in the old WWF. Delivering flying elbows from the top rope.
I fell in love with Cyndi when I heard this song on the radio in high school in the 80's. I connected instantly because I was different and she was different too in a different way but true colors have no boundaries and no limits.

Cyndi Lauper - I Drove All Night
🎸🤘
Great choice
She does an amazing cover of "At Last". I've played it for friends without saying who it is singing and most are stunned when finding out..
Thank you both so much!!!! Such a wonderful song and unique underrated singer!
All through the Night is another good one…and she also sang the theme song for Pee Wee’s Playhouse!
I saw her in concert back in 1986 and it was great.
Absolutely love this song. I cry every time I hear it.
Damn do I miss the 80s.
I was 8 years of age when this video came out in late 1986.
Just loved it instantly! Beautiful video.
Miss those days it all has changed so much but not my true colors.
Oh a
i love her so much! Time After Time is another favorite❤
Cyndi wrote one of the most beautiful songs ever… after fighting a record label that wasn’t interested in her as a writer. They wanted Cyndi the cute, UNUSUAL girl. Cyndi blew away all of the songs THEY wrote for her. An icon… i always say in the 80s the cool girls always wanted to be Cyndi … the girl who would always kick off her shoes and dance like nobodies watching. Different and unique… even when they tried to put her in a box…. That box couldn’t hold her… ❤ her so much would absolute be overjoyed to work with her.
This song is outstanding, so brilliant and perfect. I love it.
She's an amazing songwriter! So happy seeing you reacting to more of her music. Thank you for sharing! 😽💋🎶
She sounds like that when she is just talking. She was a judge on one of those reality shows a few years ago (I don't remember which one). She is still cute as can be and still sounds like that.
Cindy is a unique performer. She cut a wide colorful path all her own and is much loved for good reason.
Phil Collins did a cover of this and the video is beautiful and nostalgic. Think Lex would love it.
The world's a better place with Cyndi in it.
Another song in my karaoke catalog.
I sang this one night in Carson City NV.
This guy came out of the bathroom just as I finished and said to me “I knew you were a gender bender”.
If I like it I’ll sing no matter who recorded it!
Phil Collins did a cover of this.
Cyndi is one of those singers that knows how to use her voice to express emotion and thoughts!
I love the beginning & the end to this great song, with the Bongos
Lex, you are at your most adorable here! Here for this true appreciation ❤️ Cyndi has an insane vocal octave range and is a true artist.
Great track, great artist, one of the biggest sounds of the 80's. Gotta appreciate her.
Yea. Don't be afraid to show the good ole Red, White and Blue colors of our wonderful country!
Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South florida! Truly a beautiful song. Her voice is so unique. Cyndi Lauper once said about herself, who is this girl and why is she so unusual. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
Cyndi Lauper has the ability to belt out some awesomely powerful notes, high and sustained. You have to watch her in a live concert to really appreciate her vocals to the fullest. In live situations, she really sings with abandon.
This is one of the main reasons today's music doesn't live up to the 80's. In the 80's, we had such a diverse chart with many styles... and really mellow songs like this could make it to #1 (this one spent 2 weeks at #1). It's sad what has become of the mainstream music. That's why I wouldn't trade my Gen X status for anything!!!
Wouldn't trade my Gen X status either. Sad my kids don't have it as good.
You have a lot of modern contemporary songs that are mellow like this and made it to number one, Lewis Capaldi songs for instance, as an example, or Billie Eilish.
Yeah today's top-40 doesn't have nearly the diversity, which is ironic considering how fractured the industry is.
@@RaduRadonys I love that Lewis Capaldi song so much (Someone You Loved) I sang with his original music track on my channel. That's one of those rare gems from recent times. It's not all bad. :)
Majic lady
I love her
"She bop"!
Love this one. A true classic. Every time I hear it now I think of the movie Trolls cause that's one of my daughters favorite movies and it's on there.
I do love this song. What a great message. Just be yourself and it’s amazing. Happy days.
Her best song shows you her true range, beautiful video as well.
Her soulful voice comes alive with her version of What's Going On. Her voice flies all over the place with Change of Heart, Money Changes Everything and Boy Blue. All Through the Night is just beautiful (audio, no video was made for the song). Throw in She Bop and you see how she is vocally unique and what separates her from the rest of the ladies from the 80's...and keeps it going through today.
Brad said she sounded soulfull, true.
If you want to hear another side of her she did an album called Memphis Blues in 2010. #1 blues album of the year. At 58 her voice still sounded great and seemed like she had been singing blues all her life.
This song was never one of my favorites of hers, probably because it got overplayed on the radio back in the day. But my favorite ex-boyfriend played it for me to tell me that he loved me, so it does have a special place in my heart because of that!
Hi Brad & Lex ❤️ Lex and Cyndi is very simular person in fantasy open mind thinking 👍🏾❤️🇸🇪 a little bird but behind that is it a superwoman as wanted to change the world 👁️🌍 i think Cyndi changed the bad thinking tings people in Europe wondering about American people. And Cyndi changed that to her style that is really strong ❤️👍🏾👏 THX Brad&Lex for a wonderful reaction on Cyndi Lauper 🇺🇲❤️🇸🇪
I'm always impressed that Brad sticks with this channel as he seems (based on his expression) continually confused by the very concept of music.
This was actually the demo version. She went back in to record the master version but it didn’t have the magic that this first take had. So this was a one take song ❤
I saw Cyndi Lauper live from a few years ago. Wasn’t a planned concert, just wanted something to do. She was surprisingly awesome!
The 80’s were so freeing.. the hair .. the style .. the music .. the expression of people .. I love how people opened up and everyone accepted the feelings in others .. it sucks to see how much times have changed and now people’s freedom of speech and pro choice is not even a thing anymore.. I hope things start going in the direction of acceptance and love soon .. ❤️
You have to listen to Money Changes Everything the video version shows Cindy in concert it's pretty good
Probably her most famous song besides "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."
Cyndi Lauper set the bar very very high fopr female vocalists she is amazing.
Amazing singer. She left the limelight after the 80s. But she kept making music , and it is excellent.
If I hear this song at random, it always makes me feel at least a little bit better.
She is on TV in commercials for Cosentix (sp). I always liked her song “There’s A Hole In My Heart (That Goes All The away To China)”
I remember when this was in heavy rotation. 💙🤧
She has a extremely strong voice have to listen to some of her live performances
You're right, Cyndi really has a beautiful voice.
Love love love this tune bet before I watch lex still gets her groove on x
Her Version of Marvin Gayes "Whats Going On" is a must listen, and its from the same album as True Colors(which was also the Album Title). Great artist.
I second that!! Love her version of "What's Going On"!! The video is also amazing!!
soulful heart lifting song
