Early on in my photography career, I picked up on one technique that I use on every single image I take now; a technique that I kind of forgot aobut because I do it so sub-consciously. It's this one photography technique that evolves my photography; it lets me focus on the art and the 'why' of creation, and I want to share that with you in this photography video essay.
This video is the video version of my new weekly newsletter, creative&process and it first appeared here: patkay.com/blogs/creativeandp...

I found the best channels that taught me "how to shoot" (beyond the common basics), I found other channels that inspired me to go out and shoot, you did both. But not only that, you also taught me how to think and look at the world with my naked lens before even trying to look at it through the lens

Your newsletter this week really resonated with me.
There’s definitely something to letting the hype of an image settle over time to see if it ‘fits’ who you are as a creative.
Recently, I’ve taken to re-editing images taken at least a year’s difference in time, and I’ve noticed differences in skill gained through practice and a more matured sense of style, for lack of a better word. As you said, some stuck (and were reposted with my current editing workflow) and some didn’t.
That whole process feels like true refinement of a creative style, to me at least.

100%. time and reflection are two very necessary things that we need to realise our true style. man, i look back on some of the images and edits that i did way back when, and boy its a great feeling to look at how far you've come.

I came here for photography and instead I'm learning about life. Thanks Pat for sharing your thoughts.

This is such good advice and I’ve caught myself not exercising this and then realizing after editing a photo that “wow this actually isn’t one of my best”. Thanks for the great content as always

@@patkay I believe that the creative process doesn't stop after taking the shot, it continues and as you say the emotional element comes into play. I let images often rest for days till I re-evaluate them. In this fast and easy to consume photography times it's actually the treatment a photograph deserves.

I was in Japan for a month over xmas/new years, and I'm barely into the first week of content. Editing videos and photos isn't quick, and not really having any followers also means I'm not in any rush. I've also always allowed my captures to breathe after a trip. If nothing else, I don't know when I'll be back there, so stretching out 'reliving' it via editing content is a nice way to get longevity from the time I spent there.

So true, and so obvious that I often forget it. My best edits are the ones I came back to. The ones in the heat of the moment are hurried because of the desire to get a finished piece of work.

Great advice, I usually don't edit for a few days so that the feelings of that event is gone. This process helps remove your own biases.
