  • The Asian American Pacific Islander population is extremely diverse, culturally and economically. According to a recent analysis by the Pew Research Center, Asian household incomes range from $44,400 to $120,000. Subgroups at the low end aren’t represented by the median data. Here’s a closer look at the growing income gap among Asian Americans, how it started and what’s next.

    From an Asian eyes, it takes a hard working parent(s), sacrificing his/her life to build a better future for the second generation. So usually the results show in gen2, gen3. The family value and group pride are unique in Asia not common in the western society. combining the two factors, the study should focus on working opportunities not inequality.

      @@nearby222 No it doesn't. If your values, culture, and behaviors are right you will succeed in America. What is always left out is nearly everyone starts at the bottom and as time goes on you move through the different economic levels. Being married to a Filipino immigrant in an area with lots of Vietnamese, I've been to a zillion social gatherings over the years an observed this. Yesterday I went to a graduation party of a Filipino woman who arrived here 12 years ago with nothing and barely speaking English, which isn't even her second language. Since then she's worked jobs and studied, first getting her GED, then graduating from community college (which was so hard her for her she dropped out twice), then her university degree, and yesterday's graduation party was for her getting her Master's as a Nurse Practioner and a job paying $10,000/month plus benefits. Again, English is her third language, she had virtually no education, and had to work while going to school and simultaneously raise two children. If she can do it, there's almost no excuse for anyone else.

      The relationship between inequality and race are tangled with literally centuries of baggage and there remain consistent correlations in these categories. If you draw pie charts of racial background when you categorize income levels, they are starkly different make ups when compared to the national whole breakdown. That correlation begets further study to understand the why behind it and how to respond to that inequality.

  • @earlh
    @earlh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +632

    These stats never made sense to me as an outsider. Why would you categorize people based on the continent of origin?
    Indians and Japanese, Spanish and Ukrainian, Nigerian and Ethiopian, these are vastly different people, with different cultures, struggles, and even genetics.
    Just address inequality as a whole, this just creates more stigmatization.

    One key thing for Asian community's success is incredible hard work. We can put in all the hard work that probably a westerner would complain to do.
    For us Indians, having great education is the seen as the only way forward so you'll see almost every Indian American very highly qualified professionals. At our homes we are out under a lot of pressure to study hard and do good in academics and that might sound very rude for others but honestly it really helps in building a great career.

    • @jmin8400
      @jmin8400 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Yes, very important and very good values to instill. Many Africans, especially Nigerians follow this mindset, but that is often missed for deliberate reasons by "Westerners" (hate that term). Easier to paint the idea that Asians of all persuasions are a model minority, while us Africans are ignorant villagers with our hand out or refugees with no marketable skills.
      Indians however do not place a limit on what they can do with their education, as too many Africans are content to be simply be doctors/medical running a practice, working at a pharmacy or hospital. Or obscure, high paying 9-5 STEM jobs. At the very absolute best earning $1 million a year (as a doctor), while I guess Indians eye not just medical or middle management in engineering, but creating or heading large corporations that can churn out billions. Not everyone can be a doctor, but going into business fields and excelling, makes a world of difference, Especially Silicon Valley.
      Indians do everything. (but who is not to say other non-Asian POC haven't tried too and been rejected by financial institutions?)
      That is why Indians have a high median income, unlike other educated immigrants. A higher amount of millionaires. Despite stupid docile stereotypes, they see it as "the sky is their limit" on an individual level and are very very competitive, to sometimes a hurtful level (against others). Not to mention, Indian Americans don't have a culture which is anti-intellectual, that can negatively influence 2nd or 3rd generation youth, against their parents' principles.
      Asian parents are also very unrelenting in molding high achieving children, because if they have to cut out the "fun" or the "cool stuff" to ensure their kids' futures, they'll do it with no hesitation. Rugged individualism is discouraged and their greater communal good, emphasized. Other immigrants tend to struggle, because they allow negative/unproductive US societal influences to creep in much easier and derail their kids' focus. I.E. rugged individualism, that tells someone, they don't need to be financially successful and earn big bucks like mom and dad (to send back home).
      Nigerians and other Africans might try, but it can vary if your child is exposed to certain groups of people at school who don't value education as much and slip through the cracks, while you are busy working in a hospital earning tens of thousands for not only yourself, but to help family. They are simply practical and competitive, to get ahead and not want for anything.

    For people who are willing to put in the hard yards, the US is still a land of dreams. Despite coming from many diverse countries and cultures, they do have some common ground. A lot of the disparity comes from the fact that recent arrivals will always have less of a base to start from, sometimes from scratch. But they knuckle down and build the foundations for the next generation, who will then build on that for the generation after. Instead of the "me first" attitude of western society, they usually have a "family first" approach.
    In fact, they have much more opportunities than in Asia - where corruption and personal relationships (or lack thereof) stop many people with genuine ability from getting ahead, at least in the US (and other western countries) people generally are able to be rewarded for their abilities.

    There's equality of opportunity (rather the locals have an advantage over the migrants as should be). They don't get paid more just because they are from Asia/Indian subcontinent. It takes a huge struggle to be able to get a visa and secure a job/migrate here in the first place. Adjusting to a completely foreign land with different language and culture is also another emotional hustle. Inspite of all this, they manage to do well in their lives and contribute to the society, I don't see how it is bad for the US. If they are able to overcome all those obstacles and contribute to the society and do well for themselves, then they should be congratulated.

    • @rouskeycarpel1436
      @rouskeycarpel1436 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s not equal economic opportunity.Nobody is taking away anything from the success of those who did come on a workers visa or a student visa.People are just saying that all Asians shouldn’t be lumped into the same group(one all Asians aren’t the same race;south Asians are a different race from east and south East Asian).Many hmong and southeast Asian Americans(Vietnamese,Cambodian,Laotian,Thai etc) are among the poorest ethnic groups in America not because they lack the work ethic or family structure of other Asian ethnic groups but mainly because they came as poor refugees,never got economic opportunity and unfortunately got placed in poor,gang infested,drug infested neighborhoods.

    The main reason Indians have such a high average income is due to high paying IT and Medical jobs. In an Indian household it is pushed to work hard and achieve jobs in respected careers which can be a downside as there are not many Indians in things like arts or acting. I can’t speak for other Asian groups but I believe this is a part of the reason the income inequality is skewed

    • @rouskeycarpel1436

      A lot of these Indians who immigrated to America came on either student visas to study in the IT or medical fielders or on work visas because they were already working in those fields.As a result it makes sense they’d want to push their kids into those fields.

      Okay...but if you stop grouping by race and ethnicity there is also no meaningful way to talk about systemic racism (including refuting it, if you are sceptical). Culturally, we aren't going to stop having these categories - language is functional, and there is going to be a need to refer to particular meta-ethnic and phenotypic groupings in some contexts for the foreseeable future.
      That said, I agree that 'Asian American' is a bad grouping - Asia is such a massively diverse continent, it's not much more informative than just saying 'Other' - I'd at least split it into East, South-east, South and West Asian(/Middle Eastern).

    • @kenc2257
      @kenc2257 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No--not even close. Inequality can affect different groups of people very differently. Did you not pay attention to this video clip? [or, do you reject their data and rationale?] And, get serious--America nowadays is NOTHING like 1930s Germany; then, the official German government (with the consent/approval of the German people, at large) actually targeted minorities (particularly the Jewish people, certainly) by spreading false rumors, and pushing economic discrimination (like boycotts). Very different.

  • @kiwifruitkl
    @kiwifruitkl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    In the United States, the Burmese people tend to be immigrants, fresh off the plane. So, it is expected that they make low-income.
    In contrast, India is much wealthier and better populated, including skilled workers. Some of those skilled workers go to Western countries for school and jobs. Skilled workers, in general, expect higher pay than non-skilled workers.
    Ethnic Chinese in America hold a wide range of jobs. The most assimilated and established of Chinese-Americans may be college-educated, may have served in the military and may act more American than Chinese. New immigrants may be skilled if they arrive on a work visa or student visa, or unskilled if they come with their significant other who has the student/work visa. Sometimes, immigrants may be highly educated licensed physicians in their home countries, but because of the language barrier and American medical school courseload, they are forced to take menial labor jobs or are forced to put their medical skills in medical technology or scientific research.

    Did CNBC actually try to compare a family that came here in 2009 (right as US economy was tanking) to several Asian families that has established themselves since 1970/1980s? There are several groups that lag behind such as Hmong, Cambodian and Laotians but even they have been pulling ahead - the trick is learning how the system works in this country. The contractor who built the add-on to my dad's house was Laotian and now his son is a millionaire in construction thanks to his dad's hard work.
    My dad came here from Asia with $100 to his name and within 15 years had his house paid off. He may have had an engineering degree, but and my mom still had to take the odd end jobs and save on every food item while refusing to accept food stamps. We're still cheap to this day and we haven't eaten in a restaurant or gone to movies as a family my whole life (I think we went to a Sizzler when I was 7 but that was it).
    Kids who learn how to use the system and become TikTok stars or influencers can become millionaires before getting a drivers license. Asian mindset typically frowns upon such behavior (I know my parents would) but those kids who know how the system works can get ahead. Of course it helps to have luck and looks, but hard work and perseverance always drives the wealth machine.

So only the highly paid scientists, engineers and doctors are able to get a US work VISA. America has the most big tech corporations, and India has the largest availability of quality tech resources. So both these parties love each others for their growth and survival.
    In most other Asian countries, the tech industry is almost nonexistent, so many unskilled workers are able to get VISA, thus their medium income is low.

    Describing "Asians" as one people is like people in Asia calling everyone in the US, Canada and Mexico as "North Americans". Not smart.

      @Sasha أسد While it is technically correct, the continent has many different cultures and varying norms/habits/etc. This has a direct impact on the metrics being cited to make decisions.

      Even with a skill and education, there is still income inequality. For every other race. We are in a Class warfare, where the middle class is being attacked and destroyed.

    One thing that I always wonder about with inequality related to migrant groups are generational effects. Even without any discrimination or systemic racism - most wealthy people come from wealthy families. This would be true even if you stopped all inheritance of wealth and property (which is never going to happen), due to children and young people from high socio-economic backgrounds having early advantages on average.
    If you have migrants who are poor-on-arrival, you would expect to see an impact on average incomes even generations down the line, the same as you'd expect the grandkids of poor non-migrants to also be poorer than average.
    Of course, reality is more complicated - systemic racism _does_ exist, geography matters and different migrant groups tend to pursue education and other economic opportunities with more or less vigour. But still, sometimes it seems as if inequality between ethnic is just assumed to reflect discrimination.

    Well 90% of Asia was not exactly rich! So they tend to save a lot of money. My parents did not have electricity when they were growing up. They always study higher paying college subjects, and want their children to earn kore than them so advice them to study majors that pay better than their own major! While others start businesses!

    In America people like to say, life is carefree and all about parties in one's 20s. But I guess it's really not the case for me and my sibling. We are always helping with our parents and grandparents who don't speak English and don't drive. We drive them to the doctors (very frequent, almost twice a week for all 4 seniors), drive them to run errands, now with the Pandemic and the Asian hate attacks we even drive them to get groceries. And then there's also making phone calls, translating and writing letters, managing bills, signing and negotiating contracts, making appeals, hiring lawyers for lawsuit, or just being the translator and the point of contact for anything that requires speaking English....

      I don’t know anyone who lived the carefree party lifestyle you seem to think is common. Too much Instagram and tv makes people believe that stuff like that is real when in truth it is a small minority of people who live like that.

      @@RealEstateAndLandlordNews Yes I'm sure we all have our own share of worries and pressures in life. What I'm talking about is similar to 7:55, a kind of disconnection with most other young people who do not need to care for family at this age. All this work is taking a lot of my time and energy. To be honest I think it is quite a burden, but they are my parents and grandparents, so I can't complain much.

    i think the biggest piece to understand this is the awareness and literacy that it's an *umbrella term* that includes around *50 distinct ethnic groups* and even higher than that. and reflecting on our own assumptions about what "Asian" means because even for me, it means the East Asians like those from China, Korea, and Japan
