USA: Can reparations solve the racial wealth gap? | DW News

  • How can the US pay up for slavery? People are talking about reparations to try to narrow the vast wealth gap separating black and white Americans. And yet polls show most people are against the idea.
California may lead the way. It's set up a state task force - but economists say the sums required to really compensate for the past are into the hundreds of billions.
Congress is stuck on the issue at a national level. Now some towns and cities say they want to pay to create a fairer future.

The Office of Redress Administration (ORA) was established in 1988 and was charged with administering a ten-year program to provide a tax-free restitution payment of $20,000 to eligible individuals of Japanese ancestry for the fundamental injustices of the evacuation, relocation, and internment during World War II
In 1946, the Indian Claims Commission formed to hear the historical grievances of Native Americans and to determine restitution. As a result of the commission's findings, the government set aside $1.3 billion as compensation for 176 tribes and organizations.

One grievously underestimated contributing factor to the “racial wealth gap” is a generalized ignorance regarding basic money management-including basic investing and the importance of savings to future wealth outcomes….
A 2010 study (which is ongoing) comparing the “wealth accumulation” of different groups over time, found that among African Americans, Latinos, and recent Asian immigrants, within ten years, the Asian immigrants had accumulated 15X the wealth of African Americans, and 9X the wealth of Latinos. Particularly striking was the rate of savings between the three groups, with Asians saving, on average, 20% of earned income, Latinos, 12%….and African Americans, less than 2%….
What is important about the above study is that its results mimic other, similar ones….Whatever is decided upon in regards to reparations, serious thought must be put into adding money management courses as a mandatory requirement to a public school education….

It is very interesting that they 1) They don't demand any reparations from other nations. 2) They completely disregard the effects of slavery trade on African states. 3) They want more money, instead more seats in a senate, or some piece of land with autonomy. 4) They do not demand any compensation actually from some of the African states that participated in the trade and supplied prisoners of war to the market. 5) They do not take into account that the later waves of immigrants did not participated in slavery trade or benefited from it. Although, they may have implicitly benefited from the racial discrimination which is debatable. 6) They ultimate goal is to make another 90% of population to pay them for their education, healthcare, land and financial aid. 7) They do not realize that it may create a dangerous situation where the minority is legally more privileged than majority while this minority is effectively has no power to protect itself from retaliation. It may destabilize the country. Some states may refuse to execute federal order to pay if such is enacted. Moreover the hate may reach the heating point and explode in a social unrest or even civil war.
In my opinion, they should act smarter and just ask the federal government for help without mentioning any history. Maybe put in the same line other American minorities that suffer from wealth gap. In general, it seems these guy are more concerned about money than justice and just exploit the past to push their political agenda.

All over the world people who have been repressed are seeking reparations, including the U.K., Australia, etc. Nations are cutting their ties with colonialist entities that has relegated the UK to what it is, an island of people that have what they have from the backs of others. It is the source of their wealth. The United States is equally responsible. Most of its problems comes because of their bravado to stick their noses where it doesn't belong and dictate to their whims. And they continue to do it today. For example, the problem with the southern border is directly correlated to Iran Contra, sanctions, etc. which are all of US's doing. You want a solution? Take good hard look in the mirror. I don't believe in the justice of reparations, but resolution of the endemic inherent racism in the present day, which is an egregious echo of the same mindset of slavery. And extrapolated to sexism and so on.
E.g. Some astonishing racial biases in legal frameworks STILL existing surrounding property ownership and inheritance.
BUT the fighting talk from victims is actually a big turn off, just adds to the divisive agenda 'us' v 'them', and not attempting to be inclusive or integrative.

This is very American Progressive thinking. Take COVID for example, free money has been given to people, less people are motivated to go to work which causes labour shortage; it will cause inflation; it will in turn raise interest rate which means government will pay more on interests and less on public services and welfare and then negotiate another debt ceiling terms much quicker because reparation must come from somewhere (although currently debt ceiling is suspended) and then it will decrease the credit rating of the bond causing any borrowing more expensive to repay due to higher interest rate, and then loses dollar dominance in the world.
Btw when the US is printing a lot of money, the whole world will pay the price, that is the consequence.

  • @SubtleAmbition
    @SubtleAmbition ปีที่แล้ว

Ok so how are you gonna break this up?
Is everyone gonna pay more in taxes, therefore those receiving the reparations are paying for them too?
Is it going to be along racial lines, with mandatory DNA tests to determine how much of your genetic background comes from colonial powers and then pay accordingly?
Is it just going to be skin color? How pale does one need to be to face this additional tax burden?
What about the Greek guy that got here in the 70's who had nothing to do with any of the USA's complex racial history? What about an Irish guy who's family fled The Troubles in the 80's? How much are they going to be charged?
"Reparations" are bandied about by politicians promising free money to get votes or honest to god racists who want to see an entire skin color of people pay for sins committed against their ancestors.
Reform institutions and laws to eliminate discrimination, increase taxes on the wealthiest people (less than $100m no new taxes) to increase the social safety net and social programs BASED ON INCOME to truly correct the injustice in our systems.
