This sounds like something that would happen to me. I always get locked into places randomly. The first day of college, the doorknob of the bathroom in my dorm, BROKE off in my hand. I was like, seriously??? The professor would never believe my story of getting stuck in the bathroom...there was another girl in there too and she freaked out. Luckily, I could put the handle back in and use it. I was laughing though. I had to tell the manager of the building. First day of classes....I'll never forget it....
I saw *”A Man Called Ove”* on your TBR pile and it’s the best book I’ve read this year. Not to overhype it, but the writing style paired with the subject matter and themes presented in the book were so well knitted together.

What's worst was my car breaking down the same day, and I was already late for work! Thank goodness my supervisor was understanding and let me take the day off to settle things. Took the opportunity to listen to "They Both Die at the End" by Adam Silvera, and received weird stares at the workshop with my sobbing 😂
As a matter of fact, yes, I have been locked in my flat. Several times. All times by my sister. My set of keys is bent and can't unlock the door from the inside, but she is well aware of this, and does not bother to check if anybody's home.

When I first moved out I became locked into my apartment. The lock was installed incorrectly and the handle wouldn't turn from the inside. Luckily my mom came to my rescue and the super fixed the lock for free

Hi. Great way to spend a locked in (a house) day. One thought I had is perhaps the owners of the home looked you up before approving you for the let and found out you love books and so intentionally placed the Jack book there. My suggestion: Read it. See if it is any good. 😊
Speaking of books that you can't stop thinking about: City of Girls I picked it up as a casual read, just something light and entertaining. Here I am, more than a year later, and that damn book lives rent free in my head. 10/10 would recommend
I've never been locked in somewhere, but in my childhood home, my dad would always lock the door so I had to walk around to the back and get the spare key, and it was always really annoying

On one of my doors, I need the key to lock it from the outside when I leave. All of them can be locked without a key from the inside. I hope that makes sense.
i mean yeah if someone locks you in, most doors are actually always "locked" from the outside, meaning the knob or handle on the outside is immovable, so you can't open it without the key from the outside but can always open it from the inside without having to do anything, so there's no twist or push mechanism you can open without the key because from the inside you don't need the key anyways? hope this makes sense it's kinda hard to explain. A lot of people I know don't ever manually lock their doors when they leave because it's already locked from the outside, so it would make sense tht Nathaniel - being American (right?) - would lock him in because that's probably what his muscle memory tells him to do as he leaves the apartment. edit: I have seen these for sure in Germany, the Netherlands and France, and the UK and Ireland I think don't actually have these types of doors, they often have the "American" style doors I think????
Oh, wow. In the U.S. (or at least everywhere I've been), if a door is locked, you can still open it from the inside, and I had assumed that that was the norm, for the last few decades.
It is probably a safety norm now for new buildings or renovated ones (you need to be able to get out in case of emergencies) but I have had doors that had the keyhole on both sides, which means that if someone closes the door from either side with the key, you need the key to open it
Here in Europe (at least where I've lived), closing the front door will close it from the outside but you can still open it from the inside, then when you actively lock the door as well, it can't be opened from either side because this lock pin just goes through a hole in the doorpost. As far as I'm aware, both new and old doors have this system

Lol, can't answer for Europe, but it's definitely possible in India - especially if the apartment/house was constructed more than 10/20 years ago.
