    Well, I also looked at my "worst books" on Goodreads, and I learned that I am terrible at rating books. I feel bad giving anything under 3 stars, like I'm going to hurt the book's feelings, as ridiculous as that sounds. Middle school me was heartless and gave some of the books we read in school that are typically well liked 1s or 2s because I absolutely hated them, and I still stand by those ratings.

    I feel like Things Have Gotten Worse is not extreme enough for those who like to be shocked, and too extreme for those who don't like to step out of their comfort zone. And then there's a small group of people for whom it is exactly right 👌 the Goldilocks of books.

    • @-jg9pi
      @-jg9pi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      guess you're right for me it wasn't extreme enough but my main issue was that it wasn't convincing at all. The email back and forth was so cringy to read through, but not in the way the author intended. I also wasn't sold on their personalities, everything they did felt like stiff people trying to roleplay being kinky. By the end I couldn't bring myself to believe that someone as articulate as one of the main characters had such little idea about basic biology.

  • @EndergirlUSAOfficial
    @EndergirlUSAOfficial 2 ปีที่แล้ว +220

    I actually had the opposite problem with “Things have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke.” I’ve read a lot of what people what call “disturbing” books and I just found this one to be lacking in pacing, and buildup when compared to a lot of other stories I’ve read. I think the concept is great, but the execution needed a bit more polish. The hardest thing for me was I couldn’t really feel a difference in voice between the two main characters, which kind of sapped the believability out of the whole thing for me.

    • @dominiquedavis3566
      @dominiquedavis3566 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Same, I got it because the reviews were about how disturbing and messed up it was but I didn't feel the same, it really wasn't nad. It got a 3/5 from me but I didn't know if it was because I hyped it up too much in my own head lol.

    • @voicelessInvalid
      @voicelessInvalid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is near exactly my issue with this book. Perhaps part of my intense dislike stems also from the fact that I read this exact same disturbing story twist executed much better with a shorter effective word count posted on online horror forums and other parts of the web. There were some serious pacing issues that stripped any of the mystery or intrigue of the story for me to the point that when it got to the twist that was (to me) tired out, the book felt like a waste of time and potential.

    • @erinasarutobi2206
      @erinasarutobi2206 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      agreed! my issue is just its too over the top and it kinda gave me the ick that a male author wrote this and made the women so absurd. i agree about how ppl from the internet can affect u and make u do horrible things but the stuff that happened in this book was more comical to me besides for the ending cuz that one was good. ive seen some true crime about horrible things ppl did thats why the book felt comical to me honestly

    oh fascinating, our tastes usually match but things have gotten worse straight up got 1 star from me! i'm glad you loved it but it was an absolute miss from me.
    it wasn't the horror aspect at all, but the fact that the emails were written so unrealistically that i couldn't take it seriously or immerse myself. also it went from 0-100 way too fast and i can't suspend my disbelief when the characters exchange like 6 whole emails before a slave contract is brought up. her descent into her mental illness came out of nowhere and as someone who was in an abusive online-based relationship, this felt like...genuinely offensive lol

    I usually agree with you on most of your reviews, but "Things have gotten worse since we last spoke" was kinda unbearable for me. Not because of the quote on quote disgusting end, I'm a sucker for that type of stuff. But because the two main characters felt so cringy to me. Their texting wasn't organic. To me it felt like roleplay instead of there actually being a power imbalance. And I didn't buy that one of them was articulate enough to write "beautiful" emails but was too dumb to know what was happening to her body? I had the indescribable urge to bully the two main characters into oblivion 😭

    my problem with things have gotten worse since we last spoke was that i was so excited for the horror, and then got... nothing... like the people complaining about how disgusting it is ?? okay, it has unsettling moments but honestly it could have been SO SO much more, the idea was really good and interesting, but the delivery was kinda disappointing. so it's a bummer

    Anyway I looooved your gift guide. I’d love a guide about books to read at certain locations, maybe some sort of summer vacation reading guide (for example, what to read on a beach in the south of Italy), based on the location of the story and/or the general vibe

    Pretty sure the reason Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke, was because many people thought the gore only relied on chok value and the lebian action was forced, fetishised and unnecessary. i have not read it myself, but i've heard many people describe it as such

    idk wif i'm really choosy about the books i read or what because there are only 2 books i've read that have a rating less than 3.2 on GR. (I, otoh, have rated plenty of books with 1 or 2 stars, lol). tip though - GR ratings tend to be more generous, so if it's under 3 (or even 3.5) it's probably really, really bad. Ofc it's not always the case, but it works as a thumb rule

    Your opinion on Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke is my exact opinion on Wuthering Heights. I understand how it's a classic and I'm glad I read it, but I have never hated a character more than Heathcliff. Threw that book straight across the room in anger at his antics, but good literature doesn't HAVE to make you feel good.

    • @flippanties
      @flippanties 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was my problem with Wuthering Heights, too. I get that it's the point, but every single character being an utterly unbearable person with no redeeming qualities really made it a difficult to get through read for me. I don't think it helped that I read it as required reading back when I was doing my Literature A Level.
