Good video, just what i needed to explain to somebody on a job why i was rewiring the lighting circuit via the switches and not a 3 plate, a lot of people haven't heard or do not get this method, but it makes life better when DIY Dave comes along after you and tries to connect his new light fitting as there is only one light at the ceiling!
Hi my first video explained that due to the popularity of downlights it’s common practice to reduce the number of cables at the lighting points by feeding the switch. Sorry I didn’t reiterate this in this upload. The link is in the video to this upload and also at the end. Thanks for watching GSH Electrical.
dosnt this method make it a nightmare for future expansion? i.e smoke/extractors wont be able to be taken from in the loft, and would need to get down to the light switch which means possible chasing involved
When I was an apprentice in the 70s we were told never to bring a neutral down into a light switch as this was just bad practice and I think it was against regs also , how things have changed..... Great vids by the way.......👍
Doughnuts will do this just put it on the ring or radial, i know it’s not much power but you’ve got to identify the light and power as two separate circuits?
looking at the schematics for a smart switch, it has the light bulb neutrals going to L1 L2 and L3, with a separate live and neutral powering the unit. So is it basically your video in reverse? All the lives grouped together in a connector rather than all the neutrals?
Could you explain why there’s a supply for a socket off a lighting circuit is that allowed does it go to a FCU first ?? Also would the tv not overload the circuit if it’s not on a fcu? Thanks
Hi. The socket installed for the tv was a 5 amp one which has a different design to a 13 amp BS 1363 and different plug top. Tv’s take a lot less than one amp so it’s fine to connect them to a lighting circuit. Think about the number of hours people sit in front of the tv if it drew a large current your Electric bills would be massive. Hope his help GSH Electrical
Hi. The tv draws very little current and the socket outlet is not the standard BS1363 but a 5amp lighting socket using a 3 round pins. Often these types of sockets are used to feed table lamps so they can be switch them from the main switch es at say doorways. All the best GSH Electrical
Gordon Bennet: looks like Piccadily Junction to me. I mean can't you get it to to do the washing up as well? I'll never understand sparkies: but I have great fun trying. Excellent presentation: all I heard was static hiss, but it was good. In about 6 months, I'll understand a bit of it. Now, where's that text book.....? Lets start with 'feeding the switch' Phhhhh.....
Hi gaz if i had three separate lights in one room and a 3 gang switch am i correct in thinking all wires would connect in behind the switch as opposed to ceiling rose
Do TVs now come with a different plug top with some manufacturers of TVs? Because I was just thinking if you cut a moulded plug off could that void the warranty on the Tv, I have heard about it void warranties on white goods if cuttingthe moulded plug off.
Its much easier doing this in 1 core (line) and earth cable. Bring two cables down to the switch and connect the two lines into the common and the third cable connect the single line into the L1 or L2. Obviously the earth would be connected in the metal box or in a connector in a plastic box. A single core cable (neutral) can be run straight from the fuseboard to the lights (looping in and out). I find it easier using single core and earth cables for looping in at the switch as you do not have to fit a deeper back box to bring 3 T&Es down to the switch. Regardless of my preferred method for looping in at the switch you make some good presentations-good job.
Is this method replacing the ceiling rose? Or do you use this method just for spot lights/pelmet lighting etc and in other rooms still use ceiling rose? Thanks in anticipation.
Hi. Many new builds have the supply at the switch as it can help having a neutral there with smart controls for lighting circuits. Thanks for watching GSH Electrical

@@paulneary703That’s a good question and you are correct with your assumption.
Very Nice and the connectors make it clean

Hi. Thanks for the lovely comment. You can now turn the lights on from your phone 📱 whatever next. All the best and keep watching thanks again Gaz
Now days u need neutral for touch smart switches
great video, thank you. I'm going to do away with my ceiling rose and do this method so that I have a neutral for a smart switch
Just wondering how you going to mark on consumer unit, downstairs lighting and a TV socket?

I too would have thought this was not allowed. So what's the limits on connecting a load other than lighting onto a lighting circuit?

Quality, that makes sense to me now 👍

👍🏻
Great video thanks always wondered how this works
With help from your great video array I have decided to take part p and 17th edition wiring courses at my local college. Thanks for all you do

Thanks Gaz ... excellent explanation .. them pennies are dropping like flies 🤩
Hi. Keep working hard as the rewards are worth it 👍 Gaz

Not a sparky, but it seems to me that a 5 amp socket for a TV taken off the lighting circuit surely isn't good practise?
Running a tv off the lighting circuit !,,!,,
A 5amp socket..... You can run showers of a lighting circuit too, shows how much you know 😂😂
