I live in Canada, and we get a few American channels that show American commercials, and hoo-boy, you can tell very quickly when you're watching an American channel just from the commercials alone. In the same commercial break, I saw a commercial for a prescription drug, and then a couple of ads later I saw a call for a class action lawsuit for people or family members of people who had been harmed or killed by the drug I just saw an ad for. Absolutely bonkers.

The problem is that the ads aren't designed to 'educate' people, they are designed to get people to buy their product, which often requires *misinformation* rather than *education*. If you want to educate people about Public Health, great, the government should buy advertising time in networks. We don't leave academic education to the private sector, why should we let it 'educate' the people on education.

The fact is that the US is about 5% of the world population, but consumes about 75% of the World's prescription drugs, is the most expensive country for healthcare and yet still has among the worst health outcomes of any industrialised country.

I don't think that statistic is verified. I traced a line of citations back to this report: [1]. I couldn't find that statistic anywhere in the document though. The topic of the report is illicit drug use, and the only mention of prescription drugs is the sections on opioids and ADHD medication. Quora [2] had no verified answers but was of the opinion that the statistic was incorrect. Other sources online speculated that this may be true by cost, but is very unlikely to be true by number of pills.
Also, I'm generally in support of a neutral presentation of facts. You suggest that it's right to engage in biased reporting to avoid "dangerous assumptions." Does that mean we just trust journalists to pick the "right" side, and then feed us propaganda supporting their views? If it's acceptable for journalists to omit relevant facts, the media becomes useless as a source of information, and exists only as propaganda.
Edit: Politifact [3] confirms that this is true for opioid painkillers. Not for prescription drugs in general.

The American healthcare system is a spectacular achievement. Despite the fact that we're the only developed country without national healthcare, the US government spends a HIGHER proportion of its budget than the French government on healthcare. This figure is achieved through sheer corruption and inefficiency. The US healthcare system is "business friendly," in that it accepts dramatically higher profit margins on all healthcare services than any other country. We have the absolute worst of both worlds: the government doesn't pay for your healthcare, but there's no free market so prices are incredibly high, and the government somehow spends more on your healthcare than countries that do pay for your healthcare.

Here in Germany the advertisements we see are only for prescription free drugs. In these cases the ad just states "For risks and side effects, read the package insert and ask your doctor or pharmacist" and that's it. Cause they have to list all of those risks and side effects on that piece of paper and pharmacists and doctors have to know about it.

Similar measures seems to be in place in other European countries as well. I have seen some ads for prescription free drugs but most of the ads seen in TV or magazines are actually for vitamins and other supplements. Rarely for some over the counter pain medicine. So that American system is just bizarre to me.😅 here only people knowing and telling you about side affects are doctors and pharmacist.

I'm from Canada so our stations don't have these commercials but since we, like most of the world, are bombarded by American media we get a lot of their channels. You can turn on a random channel and know right away if you're watching a Canadian or American one because of how overkill the American ones are with pushing the prescription pills and medication. Even American commercials that don't involve drugs and medication seem to be a bit more aggressive with their marketing and if that's the difference in two North American countries, I can just imagine how odd the American ones would seem to those from other continents.

I don't mean to sound condescending, but it kinda seems obvious that the best of both worlds in this case is to ban direct to consumer advertisement and increase government spending on awareness campaigns for medical conditions.
All the pros, none of the cons... just the new con of spending more tax payer money, but I mean, public health and safety is probably one of the things that the government should actually be spending money on, right? And the government could totally require channels to air public awareness ads if they wanted to (getting rid of the whole tax payer money thing).
Then, you'll visit the doctor, you'll be properly informed and you won't be their purely because a large pharmaceutical company wants to make more profit, instead you'll be there because you might actually need to be there.

There will be a divide between republicans and democrats around this topic even though it might not be as stark and even if the divide would not be along partylines this is still a political decision public decision are almost always political decisions.

Also, the court abolished an older established set of law restricting commercial ads. Technically, the court ruling was a liberal and progressive ruling. Hell, the only dissenting vote was by a judge picked by Reagan to become head justice. It would be a conservative ruling to keep the statues quo and try to protect and shelter society. Maybe that is what you meant. I don't know

Let's not forget that doctors get kick backs from pharmaceutical companies when they prescribe their medicine. So any meeting with a doctor gives that person a chance to potentially make more money off of someone. So of course the companies would want more visits to the doctor because they can make more money. A man goes in for a diabetes drug that he saw a commercial for and leaves with a prescription for 2 additional diseases he didn't even know he "had". Do you really think that some doctors will let their potential cash cow walk without milking them for everything they're worth?

Skepticism is a fine thing, but don't cherry pick. The FDA didn't change those rules on a dare. They were lobbied aka bribed by Big Pharma for those rules change. And the market forces pushing Big pharma are to find treatments (not cures) for old, white guy diseases (ED, irritable bowels, hair loss, etc) because they are the ones likely to pay (at a premium) than the major medical problems that afflict the less affluent.

My doctor would always push for a new drug to add to the pile he put me on. Half the time, I could of been fine with just some therapy, not a drug that would knock me out cold or make me suicidal. It's sad I feel better than I did on half that medicine.

I'm from Europe (Czech Republic) and when I was on a trip to USA (NYC) in 2019 we had a tv in our apartment and what suprised me was:
    - the amount of ads on tv. I was watching HGTV and there were ads every like 7 minutes of the show, it was so frustrating.
    - during each ad segment there were ads for drugs AND ads for lawyers targeted at people suing anyone for injuries, harm etc.
So strange, such things definitely are not on our tv...

The problem is that we can't rely on a commercially motivated high-exposure ad to educate people. In almost every case, the goal of an advertiser is to mislead as much as they are legally capable. The best advertisers are the best liars. If you want to educate people about diseases, it has to come from an unbiased source.

"For better or for worse." Really? How is that in any way better? You could just advertise getting the illness treated instead of the drug? Like "do you have these symptoms? You could have this...maybe you should get it checked."
By advertising the drugs directly, you get people hooked on brand names with no real knowledge of their health condition or of the drug action. It's clearly all about making money and any 'getting people to see their doctor more' side effects are blatantly coincidental. In fact, it's just as likely to destroy public trust in both medical professionals and healthcare in general as drugs fail to live up to expectations because they were inaccurately prescribed. 'Positive side' my ass.
