Yes, the end part is played by using artificial harmonics (harmonics of fretted notes). The highest fretted note on a Fender Bass is an Eb, but the piece goes up to a high G. Sometimes limitations can be very inspiring ;-) Thank you for watching!
I like the way which I was criticized for myself, the tempo that lags which only enhances the beautiful composition. Love seeing someone do the same thing, I guess it was the baroque way, oh well. Not lack of keeping tempo but deliberately lagging it.
As a child and starting on the Bass I was given a short piece from Bach To learn with no clue as to where it came from or who has written it. Playing it I was sure it was from a Bassist I wasn't aware of yet. Bach To me always sounds like he was writing for the Bass guitar. It feels so familiar and comfortable yet has the " mathematics ' style of a tight Bass line. Beautiful is Bach.
Man, this just really amazes me. I started trying to learn this on my J bass a couple days ago, and I didn’t take into account that the register of the bass guitar wouldn’t really allow for the final stretch to be performed without a 5 string or extended techniques. I figured someone had tried it on four, and behold, not only was I right, but you absolutely knocked it out of the park!!!! The thumb position, the harmonics with your right thumb, everything was spot on!!! I would like to do my best and try and learn from this video, but honestly, the amount of thought and technical ability here is beyond me, and I don’t think half the people watching understand just how difficult this was. Well done, this video is honestly a paradise for bassists looking to play classical music on electric.
Hi, I am really happy, proud and overwhelmed how many people love my interpretation of this piece! It is a great feeling to know that you and many others are being inspired!! Best regards Fabian
I’m in the same boat! Which sheet music are you following. I found most folks online use a 6 string to accomplish this so I was debating getting a 6 string for that very reason.
@@jacksparr0w300 hey! I did end up learning this piece on four string, the ending is very unnatural feeling for me but was totally doable. I don’t recall which sheet music I used, I’m not the best sight reader so a lot of it I learned by ear. By far the hardest parts were the thumb position stuff and pinch harmonics, which took some getting used to. I was taking upright lessons at the time, so I was already familiar with the thumb position, but it took some practice to apply it to electric and it’s not very comfortable. Just do it over and over super slowly, that’s the best advice I have. The tone for the pinch harmonics is important or else they won’t ring, so I turned my bridge pickup up high and messed around with my mids to get a decent sound. It’s a challenging piece, but really fun and definitely doable! I watched this video a lot while I was learning and just tried to copy Fabian. Best of luck, hope this helped!
This is my favorite rendition of this Suite on electric bass. The guy that looks like Ashton Kutcher is a close second but I'm a huge fan of vintage P basses. I have a 73 but I really want a pre CBS P bass.
You are right. Ashton Kutcher hasn’t got the phrasing right and plays each note with the same intensity. This is played with feeling and, frankly, with class.
Getting back here again to tell you this video is one of the greatest reasons for me to picking electric bass classes. Thank you so much for the inspiration!
I listened to the start. FINALLY!! Someone on bass has understood that the deep “bass notes” of the piece are drawn out and not played with the same timing as the rest of the notes. Thank you!!
This is the only guy I’ve seen on TH-cam playing this piece who is actually making music and not a display of fast fingerings with a horrible tone. Congrats, you are great!
As you know, there are many TH-cam videos of Prelude #1 on electric bass. I watch them all. I am not much of a bass fan, but I am a lifelong fan of J.S. Bach. Bach is rock! I think he would like your version. Excellent musicianship. As you also know, Bach's music did not include any notations as to tempo or volume and such. Your version was beautiful. Uniquely your own, yet true to the music as written. Bravo.
Beautiful, musical playing, and that’s a great sounding P bass, you can really hear how dry the body wood is. I loved the thumb position, false harmonics and the use of picking position to round out the bottom notes. Lots of great solutions to technical problems. Thanks for posting 👍👍👍👍
Wow, thank you!!!! It is such a great feeling to hear, that people out there (like you) are really carefully listening to this! This is probably the most detailed description of my version I have ever heard! Thanks listening and thank you for your wonderful feedback! Fabian
I've played this in D for years as I learnt it first on double bass from a well known transcription, but the addition of the artificial harmonics to make the ending possible in G on a Fender bass is a masterstroke. And just beautifully played, with great feeling and sensitivity. You really capture some baroque elements which probably shouldn't be possible on electric bass. its the only version on electric bass I've heard that I like.
Well done ! The best bass sound of 1007 on the whole youtube which I've ever seen !!!! Also, it is amazing idea to use flageolet as Jazz bass doesn't have enough range for 1007 at the end of prelude.
Very nice version, very precise and tasteful playing. I knew a couple of other Bach pieces played on bass guitar but not this one. Steve Hackett from Genesis played a piece inspired by it ages ago, called Horizons, on the B-side to Foxtrot, back in 1972
I love this piece on any instrument. And I especially love this piece when it's played with such passion. I have several versions of the prelude on bass and guitar and many are technically perfect - Ariane Cap - but lack fire and obvious passion. This one and David Scarth's fretless version are my favs. Well done, sir!
No sir ... thank YOU! "To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable." -Ludwig van Beethoven You sir ... have managed to bring fire and passion to a technically perfect performance. Rare indeed. I salute you!

I was just wondering how would you play the second movement, since you just have 21 frets... Thanks for the harmonics lesson!
Luke Skywalker of bass guitar
that makes me really happy thank you

It was written for the cello, and that's a bass cleft instrument, too.
I'm trying to learn it on the cello.
And to think us bass players still get told to just play root. Bravo that is amazing. Beautifully played.
:-) Thank you!
the two people that gave this thumbs down DO NOT know great music.
This made me cry treats of joy.
The Best bass guitar interpretation i have heard so far. I love sound dynamics and articulation.
Thank a lot! I feel very honored to hear that!!

The musical joy you achieve at the end of this piece is the definition of cadence.
feel extremely honoured to hear that!! thank you!

Fabian Wendt plays the Precision here like Van Gogh played with colors. How truly beautiful.
I am really touched and feel very honored! Thank you!!!
trying to learn this piece on my jazz bass, 200 views are mine, great job man
Yeah! I am happy to hear that! Thank you!
Views count only once but I get the concept haha
How did learning go?
Beautiful interpretation, great phrasing and musicality. Glorious.
Thank you!! 🙂
Congratulations. The first Bach performance on bass that respects historical criteria.
The Force is strong with this one
:-) !!! Thank you!
Best version on Electric bass. Thank you for the music. I will play this prelude on my Exam.

That is beautiful; soulful, nuanced, and technically brilliant playing.

Man, your bass older than Bach
;-) Thanks
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
good joke.
@@fabianwendt2628 I can kill for one of this... this P Bass is no contest one of the most beautiful ever seen... and is in good hands 🙌
lmao
Best rendition I've seen.

I believe so to..this the one.👍
I love how you have interpreted this beautiful piece for a beautiful instrument and performed it expertly.

That's wonderful! The first bass interpretation I've seen for this beautiful prelude. I'll stay with this, no need to see others!
I love how you put yourself, your feelings into this piece of music.
