Short’s Trudeau isn’t bad either. I loved the one where he fell madly in love with Edith Prickly and she tossed him over her head onto the dance floor.
Flaherty is spot on for the eye roll, tongue swipe and posture of William F. Buckley.........on the same level of Dave Thomas's Bob Hope.
SCTV was pure comedy genius!!
The thing I've always found intriguing about SCTV is that it always had the appearance of not being rehearsed.

Coming out of second city, I'm sure there was a lot of improv. Their performances feel fresh and a little spontaneous.
Absolutely, was thinking same, adds to the authenticity of the show's characters.

"Can you find out if the Vatican has its own fire department ?" Good stuff. SCTV was so underrated as a comedy show, better than SNL in my opinion.

You must admit, ‘ Dog Fart Cat Puke’ is not without its merits.
one of my favorite skits ever.....a completely old school and extremely shallow host making a mockery out of interviewing people of historic significance.

This was so funny that I was crying. The comedians were the best and the makeup artist did such a great job on SCTV.

"Cancel the roast beef buffet.." I just spit out my coffee on that one. "Indira, darling, over here sweetheart."
SCTV has always been light years ahead of SNL and this skit shows why. The sets were a lot cheaper, but that was part of its (very Canadian) charm.
And for those of us old enough, those were just outstanding impressions.
"Danny, cancel that roast beef buffet. No, seriously she'd love that joke".
"Danny, find out if the have their own fire department".
And on and on.
I love how Martin Short uses Turdeau's classic "Gunslinger" stance to introduce himself to Andrea Martin's "Indira Gandhi".

Thank you, I knew she looked familiar! 😊 I remember her from the '70s sitcom "Soap", credited as Nancy Dolman then.

Yes Michael, Nancy Short passed away of 2010 from Ovarian cancer. Martin Short mentioned his wife's cancer battle in his 2014 memoir "I Must Say: My life as a Humble comedy legend."

SCTV was bursting at the seams with sheer brilliance on both sides of the camera, and could skewer tripe like damned few people before or since. If they had you in their crosshairs it was usually because you deserved it, and you should’ve been glad it was them rather than 60 Minutes. Sometimes, yes, it was because they loved you. Sometimes it happened because a cast member impersonated you well, but 90% of SCTV zeroes in on mindless garbage with uncanny accuracy, as in this testifies.
By the way, the scary husband in the audience is played by George Buza, later a regular cast member of Joe Flaherty’s series Maniac Mansion.

“Last call for lunatic liberals and their girlfriends”. SCTV baby! Unstoppable in their prime. Levy is gold. More Levy gold in this 10 min sketch than the entire Schitts Creek series, yet that is what he won the acclaim for.

Its amazing the crazy range all the SCTV actors had. Levy alone plays everything from the wormy Earl Canenbar to this guy. Same with Andrea Martin. Gandhi to "Edith Prickley". They were the best!

Stan Kanter -- what a character, never seen this one before. He's genius, he's channeling lecherous game show hosts like Richard Dawson. . . and the comeback to the news that the guest is Indira Gandhi "Danny, cancel that roast beef buffet" . . . wow. Somehow Levy, like Paul Schaffer, grew up knowing all the weird quirks of celebrity and loving them . . . also notice that Levy has not one but two distinct Boscht Belt comics, Stan Kanter and Bobby Bittman . . . the quality of the observation is amazing.
This could be 2020, only funny for all the right reasons.
I love that ending with Buckley as the bartender.
Thr only way I can recognize Short is to look for the character that least looks like him!😮. 🤓😎✌🏼

The difference being, at the time this was performed, SCTV was actually funny.
