    I have both the Inkosi and the triway system xm18 3.5 “ full Ti. This 2 knifes are so different, one feels like a gentleman knife made to perfection and the other a brute piece of art that can handle anything. Both are stunning in their own style.

    Really good comparison. I own both, and I prefer the Inkosi. The inkosi has a bit more neutral handle, were the Hinderer fits perfect in one particular way of handling. But for pull cuts or a reverse grip the inkosi feels better as I experienced. And funny enough, in the Netherlands the Hinderer is almost 100 euros more expensive than the Inkosi.

    First off, lets all take a moment to appreciate your handwriting.........
    Now, that was a seriously comprehensive review! I would really like to see more breakdowns using this same format. I think I would have to go with the Hindered, mostly because it has a flipper. I really like to fidget with my EDCs, so a flipper is a must. Or a Spydie hole :D

    Great review! Own both and tough choice. One has the ability to customize, two hand positions, and to me looks cool. One feels like a gentlemen's knife, superior warranty with spa treatments, and easier to carry in pocket. Either one is a great choice and even better is to own both. Bought both and no buyers remorse. Now I need different versions of both. Never ends!!

    The grip, blade shape and grind, weight and ease of maintenance; it is the Inkosi by a good margin for me.

    The Inkosi is more appealing to my eyes and it would be on my radar if it was fidget fun. Fast and easy deployment and retraction is important to me as a tool. But these beauties are a bit more than that. The Vintage XM 18 is the coolest Hinderer knife I've seen and makes me reconsider my budget and past purchases. I've spent considerably more on various budget knives than both of those combined. Thanks for another good overview.

    So many comments about your handwriting. lol I felt the key thing for the Inkosi was moving the clip off the lock bar. I returned the 21 I bought because I kept engaging the lockbar while holding it since the clips sat on the bar. With the 31 moving the clip and tweaking the detent ball I think they could put the Inkosi to retirement. Enough similarities I doubt the Inkosi will be missed over the long haul.

    I like how the Inkosi has a huge pivot and how it doesn’t have a bushing pivot can be a pro or a con honestly. But I do like that the Sebenza is significantly thinner behind the edge compared to the Inkosi since it’s a true hollow grind and honestly the Inkosi is more of a flat. I wish they had don’t more of a hollow.

    Thanks for the excellent in depth review of two high quality USA made production folding knives. Both of these brands have always remained out of reach until now and I find myself considering between the Chris Reeve Umnumzaan and the Hinderer 3.5" XM-18 Non Flipper Spear Point both from DLT Trading. I am curious as to how the price point of $450.00 and $425.00 respectively was determined, I certainly appreciate the build quality, blade steels and the fact that both are USA made. This channel has become a new favorite of mine.

  • @mik3ymomo

    Both seem like great knives but I think the one category the Chris Reeve got shafted was Ergo. With all that chamfering and finger recesses as well as the angled clip which makes it invisible to the hand…. Seems like it should have taken that category. Otherwise great comparison. 👍

  • @jseden
    @jseden 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Call it stupid but aesthetics are huge for me and I just don’t like the hinderer so it’s out for me on that note. Beyond that, I just prefer smaller knives. Even when I carried a dragonfly, which I did for years.. several variants, I never really felt like I needed more. For me, the small seb is ultimately my perfect, possibly endgame knife. I’ve owned two.. an insingo with micarta, and a plain standard. I got the insingo first.. it was literally the only one available locally so I bought it.. never really felt the blade tho.. and my girlfriend at the time definitely threw it out while I was at work one day. Fml. It was several years before I was ready for another but I recently found a couple locally and pulled the trigger. And on that, I’m pretty content on knives.
    I don’t have a massive collection but I’ve bought one or two “high end” blades a year for the past decade. My last one before the seb was a zt0450.. it seemed like the perfect compromise between another crk and something cheaper.. the 0450 so great and a lot of fun to play with, but there were two things I disliked.. first, the flat grind. I was carrying a sanrenmu 7010 before it and never realized how important the hollow grind was to me until I got the ZT. Second, it’s difficult to unlock the blade without changing my grip. It lacks the cutout that makes the lock more accessible. It’s also just a little large for my tastes.. this is kind of offset by its overall slimness though and I’d be totally happy to be stuck with one as my only knife. It’s still got a place in my rotation but the small seb leaves me wanting for nothing.

    I definitely prefer CRK’s. Lighter weight, slimmer in the pocket and cut better. Hinderer 3 inch non flipper, with the slicer grind is my preferred Hinderer model, because in my experience it makes for the best edc. I also prefer older XM-18 generation models, but wish they would have milled off some of the weight. If I didn’t mind pocket hogs I’d choose the SNG over both Hinderer & CRK.

    Good and comprehensive review. However I don't understand your test about cutting performance. Slicing paper only test the secondary bevel and have nothing to do with the thickness of the blade or the real cutting performance when you cut a non thin material.

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The paper cut test is just meant to provide a minimal description of what I feel in terms of resitance on a very simple level. If I got any more complicated than paper, it would not only extend the video WAY past it's already lengthy duration, but it would also open up multiple doors for endless debate. I know how complicated the world of edge geometry is, and I don't want to create a breeding ground for argument.
      But...
      Here's how I look at it: If I have 2 blades 1.0" tall, one at 0.15" thick, and the other at 0.1" thick, and both are fully flat ground, the 0.1" thick blade will end up much thinner behind the edge. In this case, the starting thickness would change the outcome, especially when cutting materials that create major friction. If you had two blades at the SAME height and thickness, the outcome would be the same unless the grinds were different, such as the grinds on the XM and Inkosi (flat/hollow)
      To your point, if I was going to cut a shingle, and all I had to choose from was either the standard 0.165" XM 18 or the 0.145" Inkosi, I would Imagine the Inkosi would be better, given it is a thinner blade AND hollow ground. However, like I said in the video, the XM offers a "skinny" (0.145" thick) model. My guess is in that case, considering they are roughly the same height as well, they would perform nearly the same on a shingle, even though the grinds are different. Considering all that, scoring them evenly still makes sense to me. So ya, the paper cut test doesn't help explain all this, but it creates a quick visual, and helps dismiss the idea that "thick blades can't cut" (I.E. Medford, Hinderer, etc)
      See, now I'm opening a can of worms 😂. Crap.

  • @JA-vw2wy

    It's crazy that I'm watching this 5 years later, and value was a tie because of a $25 difference, but now the Inkosi has gone up in price so the difference is now $75 from the XM-18.

  • @Quickjob519

    Fartsniffing on steels is something that people newer to the hobby are doing. I'd say if you're newer to knives you'll love a hinderer, once you're seasoned you'll go CRK. 20cv and M390 are amazing, but s35vn particularly CRK s35vn is easy to sharpen - doesn't chip as easy, and is plenty corrosion resistant.

    Great video. I had sebenza 21 and xm-18 3.5. After couple of years, I sold crk and got a Microtech SOCOM elite. Crk is an amazing knife but it was just so delicate and sophisticated looking. It is a robust, absolute monster of a knife but just the look of it, it was too sophisticated for my taste. I still place sebenza as the Top knife out of strider, hinderer, and crk. Yet I personally have no problem carrying xm-18 everyday and use it everyday. Crk.... Not so. Much. Lol

    Bro it makes me sad that you dont use your grail.. think of it this way.. eventually would your children or grandchildren think fondly of a knife never used by you? Or would they want the knife you always took out of your pocket to open their birthday presents etc.? My ZT0392BWBRZ could probably go for a lot of money right now but it's my main knife. I carry it probably 75% of the time. So if I put my daughter in front of my knife collection and ask her which one is daddy's favorite? Bam. Carry your shit bro 👊 just my heirloom mindset. IMO the Small Sebenza is the best CRK. I agree that the Large Inkosi is a better knife than the Large Sebenza, because I feel like the Sebenza design is a perfect small EDC knife design, and the Large Sebenza feels like a small knife blown up a bit. A small knife that you don't flick out and fidget with just makes sense. The smaller pivot hardware makes more sense on the small Sebenza. It just feels right in the small, and the Large feels awkward. The Inkosi feels like what the Large should be to me. In the same way, the 3" XM feels like a novelty mini of the 3.5".

So yes, they're alot of $-- but, its better to have 2 or 3 great knives rather than 10 or 15 so so blades--- just my opinion. (So, so = $ 50 to $100 )

    Hinderer sure does have a lot of options to choose from. Sure would be nice if they included left handers as 1 of there millions of options 🤨

    I would say inkosi fits better in pocket compared to hinderer. Hinderer wins in flipping opening action and blade steel options. Inoksi has better tolerance, simplicity and lower weight. In terms of framelock strength it should be draw because tacticial vs gentleman framelock makes no difference. Thats why i think harduse framelocks knives are gimicky since all framelocks are ideal for light use. Harduse should be handed to coldsteel or fixed blades. Between the 2 knives, the winner would be hinderer for me but I would carry a spyderco framelock or zt framelock for half the price.

      A lot of what you're buying with either knife is pride of ownership, and aesthetic refinement. The ZT 0562ti is essentially the same knife as my full ti xm, but it lacks the added touches, and I know it's not "truly" a Hinderer. I love it, but for me, it will never steal the spotlight from my XM. There are many knives that perform just as well for less money, but I'd get bored with them. It's different for everyone. I like to buy knives that make me happy, and the XM brings me more happiness than the 0562ti.

      I agree it just depends between every user. I owned a hinderer before but ended up selling it. Im just becoming more realistic in what I think is more practical due to price and performance. @@metal_complex Spyderco, Zt, coldesteel, buck knives are very practical in the edc use for me. I also owned midtechs and customs but it wasnt for me after 2 years.

    Inkosi all the way. Hinderer is less accessible, less well made. Inkosi has better manufacturing as reviewed by the industry AND comes in a lefty. At the price hinderer doesn't even bother to provide such. Hinderer is on the list with all its "options" if and only if you're right handed. Hinderer cancels out an entire segment of the market.

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I disagree. Having handled multiple examples of both, I can confidently say Hinderers are made equally well. That may have been true 3 or 4 years ago, but not anymore. They are literally indistinguishable in terms of fit and finish. Hinderer may not currently offer a left handed model, but they definitely will. On top of that, not only do you have more aesthetic choices, but Hinderer provides more functional choices as well. Blade shapes, steel choices, skinny/fatty variants, plus the option to use any pivot set up you want with the tri way system. I went over all this in the video. Chris Reeve makes a fantastic knife, but Hinderers shouldn't be overlooked just because they don't currently have a left handed framelock set up. (They do currently offer scales with left handed pocket clip mountable positions)

    • @DG__3
      @DG__3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@metal_complex They should. If you're left handed. Not paying that price to get by or make due on handedness. Hinderer is more than overdue to correct that oversight ESPECIALLY at the price. Knives are hand tools. Hinderer sidelines an entire segment of the market by not offering an option for both hand orientations at cost ESPECIALLY considering the price point and how much customization they have invested in in every other aspect. Not justifiable to ignore handedness accross the segment at base price.

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't you think Rick Hinderer's current trend of catering to the needs of the many will inevitably lead to him creating a left handed variant? Sure they're late to the game... but it'll happen, and then everyone will have to find something else to complain about.

      @@metal_complex I've actually called them before on that one to inquire. It was a while back, but was told there were "no plans". And at that, you would think they'd at least offer a drilled and tapped left side scale at no xtra cost. I mean seriously, how much time/expense is that? As a hobby knife maker I can tell you, nearly zero. 10 min max. If done by hand and slowly. Not a mere complaint, or quibble, or nice to have at this price... Honestly, would you buy a $4-500 left handed knife? That's kinda where I am with Hinderer.

  • @chrisc.4517
    @chrisc.4517 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    In my opinion the XM-18 should've won on value. I get what you're saying about the $400-$450 bracket but I still don't think $25 is that trivial. It all adds up. Enjoyed the battle nonetheless, had never seen this one.
