The quicker you get it split, the faster it dries but the wet wood is much denser than dry. Using an axe, I like to wait until all the cracks have started so you can read the wood easier and see where it already wants to split. Helps a lot on really big rounds.
I've split wood for 45 years and I've never had a splitting axe like the Fiskars X27. It's amazing.
