This game was a HUGE graphical improvement over Sonic 2 released the year before.
This might be an odd choice but the game gear version is one of my favourite games of all-time the music resonates with my childhood, especially Turquoise Zone

Great longplay, I enjoyed every minute of it. Super underrated game.
When I was a kid, my brother and I each got a Game Gear game for a road trip. I got this one. I similarly got 100% completion within half an hour of playing. My father was so outraged to pay so much for so short a game that we turned around and and got a refund of the game. I didn't even get a replacement but my brother got to keep his game. it's been 25+ years and I'm still a little bitter about it...

Ever since I unlocked it in Sonic Adventure DX as a kid, I spent more time on it than I did the actual game. Though I suppose it was because I had already beaten everything in the main game and this one eluded me because of how hard it is to get the Chaos Emeralds here. lol

damn. good memories. this was my first sonic game ever. had the game gear version on a sonic plug and play controller that also game with spinball dash, which was also good, but u played this nostalgic memory first (insert love hear)
Ahhh the memories, the amount of batteries I went thru playing this game...
I remember all too well! I went through 8-packs of AA like they were nothing! I remember my brother and I both had Game Gears (yes, we even used the link thing for games like Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Macahine) and after a car trip, we'd eat through 8 batteries each in 3 hours flat.
Those game gears were power hungry with the sound and backlight. I loved mine I got it way after it went out of production. All my friends were so confused when I'd bring it around. Such good memories
@@_skyyskater That's why you get the wall adapter. It will last for a while, at least until the wire gets kinked from being bent all the time. So when you're at the last stage and the kinked wire shuts off your game gear, it tends to drive a brotha crazy.

Yep. Used to have that battery-sucking Game Gear and this game. The GG Sonic games weren't too bad, but I was better off playing them in the PS2 on the Mega Collection honestly.

What an amazing game!
I found it supremely odd how it was only sonic you were able to do the chaos emerald challenges. The first one, you could really build up your lives because the game was in fact very difficult.

I played this game at my cousin's house every week when I was a kid.
I used to play this all the time as a kid because it was the only Sonic game on Game Gear (at that time) where you could actually spin dash. After they added that mechanic, it made the older Sonic games almost unplayable in retrospect IMHO.

Old sonic fans: So nostalgic I played it for many hours when I was a kid it's my favorite game.
New Sonic fans: oh dear God why is the soumd so crunchy like a gameboy!? Why is the screen so zoomed in what am I playing mario!? Why is sonic running in less than 30fps!? Sonic feels like the slowest thing alive!?

Theres LOADS of differences between the Master system and Game Gear versions of this.

+Ryan Gould A lot of it is because the Game Gear has a smaller screen, so they had to rework the game a little bit to fit it. The Game Gear also has a bigger color palette, so there's more colors on screen at once, and Mecha Green Hill Zone has a different color scheme. Some music is different and Gigalopolis has a completely different song on both versions.

I think the bosses take different amounts of hits between the two versions too. It's been a long time since I checked, but one of them always requires more hits.

This is what Sonic 2 on GG and MS should've been. I just watched the MS version of this game and now I'm amazed at the differences, most notably the screen size. This is my favorite 8 bit Sonic game alongside Triple Trouble. The only thing that doesn't make sense is why most of the ring boxes pop open like normal and sometimes they explode. Lol minor thing I've always wondered about.

I had a Game Gear and had no idea there were 3rd and 4th Sonic games when I owned it I thought there were only Sonic 1 and 2. Wish I had known this back in the 90s when I had it.

The music sounds better on the GG than it does on the SMS.
Also the Gigalopolis music is different in the SMS version.
With how drastically different the SMS version is and how many similarities it has to the prototype of the GG version, it's being assumed that the SMS version was an after thought, and they used the prototype of this game lol

I ever played this in SONIC MEGA COLLECTION PLUS.
What's deflating is that I couldn't beat the final boss of this game as a kid. I got to the end every time I played and kept getting hit by the bouncing laser. 😢

When I was smaller I absolutely HATED the water boss. By the time I destroyed those minion things I had no rings.
There is a invincibility power up you spindash through the wall and the spring send you to up to get to the ring
Imagine the game description on the back of the box: "Tiny bosses which fill up a small part of the screen!!"

Sonic’s only good for getting Chaos Emeralds. Tails is clearly the better choice. With him, it’s easier to get continues, you have 3 continues to start with, and you can fly.

It is a good game but i do not understand why they made the game so zoomed in,the game gear had a bigger screen than the game boy so they could have used smaller sprites,i know it is a master system port.some games like mickey land of ilusion adapted to the smallet screen by placing things closer in puzzles.
+Ciprian Mogosanu this game was originally made for the Sega Master System, which is why the sprites are bigger.
Ciprian Mogosanu Game Gear has the same resolution as Game Boy. That resolution was what also allowed Game Gear games to have the kind of color they did.
Am I the only who's noticed the "thanks to hitmen" in the credits????? i'm sure its probably just the codename of some programmer or something but it's hilarious thinking that the game could not have been possible without the help of multiple hitmen

Sairot247 gg has better graphics and music but the master system has a bigger fov.
I like the Master System version better. The crunched screen on the GG version bothered me. Not a bad version. but I prefer the MS version.
GG probably has the better music overall (I think Turquoise Hill MS sounds better though). The Game Gear version also has brighter colors, and weaker bosses to accomodate for the smaller resolution. Overall the MS version is probably the better option, but they are both good.
I prefer the Master System version it because the GenPlusDriod had no Game Gear support.
