Sonic 2 Simon Wai Prototype: All Stages

  • About 1/2 a year ago, I made a video showing off the stages found in the Sonic 2 Simon Wai Prototype that were cut from the final version of Sonic 2. I've decided that this time, I'm going to take a look at the full Prototype and see what's in store for all the levels. At some point, I may also look at the Nick's Arcade Prototype of Sonic 2.
    Oh boy this is gonna take a long time to finish...
    For Debug Mode, go to the title screen and press C C C C Up Down Down Down Down Up, then press start while holding A. Then hold A while selecting a level.
    Anyway, here's a quick overview of the stages:
    Green Hill: Actually Emerald Hill. Mostly finished, but there's some oddities, as well as a scrapped Snail Badnik. The only level in the prototype that has a boss.
    Wood: A forest level. It's very unfinished. Uses Metropolis Zone's Music. Act 2 is completely empty.
    Metropolis: Unfinished, but has decent progress. Lava can't hurt you, and the ceiling crushers can't crush you unless they fall on you.
    Hill Top: Unfinished, but close to completion. Badniks are missing, and Act 2 ends with a signpost.
    Hidden Palace: Pretty far into development. Badniks, rings, the fabled Tails Monitor, the unbreakable emerald, Mystic Cave's 2 Player music, it's all there... in Act 1. In Act 2, all objects are missing completely.
    Oil Ocean: Somewhat developed. It's missing a lot and used Casino Night 2 Player's Music, but on the plus side, you can ride on rolling checker balls without falling off ^-^
    Dust Hill: Actually Mystic Cave. Somewhat developed. Missing enemies and rings. Plus there's no spikes in the infamous "Pit"
    Casino Night: Broken Collision, no Pinball, no enemies, no rings, a very different art style, and Act 2 has a broken background.
    Chemical Plant: Almost complete. Act 2 ends with a sign post though, and there seems to be some missing enemies.
    Genocide City: A pit of nothingness, broken background. Chemical Plant's music.
    Neo Green Hill: Aquatic Ruins, but more empty. There's water, but no rings or enemies. Act 2 ends with a signpost.
    Death Egg: So empty that there's no music. Activating it actually turns all audio off until you reset the game.

    The nightmare fuel page for Sonic 2 has this to say about the Beta.
    ""The infamous Sonic 2 prototype has the infamous blank stages: Wood Zone Act 2, both acts of Cyber City Zone, and both acts of Death Egg Zone. No level, just glitched (if any) background) and plummeting to your death three times. Even worse, playing Death Egg Zone, which has no music, shuts off the Z80 processor, preventing sound from playing again until you reset.""

    34:26 The path taken depends on the clock: odd numbers of seconds take you on the upper path while even numbers take you on the lower path.

    Finally, after what feels like 10 hours, the video is fully finished...
    Also, I recommend turning on Captions for the video. I put in some witty (maybe) and insightful commentary about the different levels and general elements of the prototype.

    one thing ive seen no one talk about is, at the end of wood zone, there is a little section that might’ve been the original end to act one. its pretty cool!

      I just looked into it myself, and it looks like that small section of level at the end is simply copied from the beginning of the level. It seems that it's just cloned / looped from the level data already put in place. It probably wasn't put there intentionally. The same thing also happens in Metropolis, Hidden Palace and Casino Night.

    This would make a creepypasta.
    I remember when sonic first released, it was a good game. And I was even more happier when they announced the sequel. I was broke, so my dad was buying pirated games. He bought me sonic 2.
    It was normal, but... wrong.
    It was really empty, like there was no one.
    And as I was coming to the end, I got stuck in the casino night zone.
    Thinking it was the end of the game, one year passes.
    Later, I discovered cheat codes, and i found the debug mode cheat. This is when things started to get weird. My copy did not have a sound test screen, so i tried the konami code compinations, and one worked. (up down down down down up z+start).
    I finally beat the casino night. Thinking I was out of bounds, I was wrong.
    There is more of the game. Something I missed all the time playing this, thinking the end is the casino night. As I continued the adventure, more things started to get empty and... weird. And when i got to the death egg zone. The zone, surprised me really much. I was falling into the void and there was no end. I got there again. Is there another way?

    Green Hill (Emerald Hill) had most glitches but later in-development the final ver has no glitches!

    Actually this prototype still has the Sonic 1 title cards, just disabled
    Details about that are on the TCRF page (for the earlier Nick Arcade proto however, unsure about Simon Wai)

    Something I found on chemical plant is that if u try drowning sonic 2 Simon wai version options music plays and then if u get out of the water emerald hill zones theme will play
    My Conclusion is that chemical plant was originally supposed to be emerald hill zone

      I think the game is just using old sound IDs that no longer fit the game.

      @JM Coulon i wouldnt call it difficult tbh, the water section in act 2 can be easily bypassed, with enough speed which is easy in sonic 2 you can pretty easily beat chemical plant

    I must get dis copy. I want to to play the prototype stages. And the 1up jingle was kinda creepy

      The actual 1Up jingle is in the prototype, and it’s used if you actually break a 1Up Monitor. I believe the theme for Death Egg Zone is used for getting 100 Rings because the location of the different songs in the game’s data were moved around, and they simply forgot to change the command to pull the song from the new location.

    How do you go in the LEVEL SELECT SCREEN?

      C Up Down Down Down Down Up, then A+Start. You activate Debug Mode by holding down A while selecting a Level. I had it in the captions but forgot to add it to the description.

      if you just do A+Start as soon as you get to title you get level select but no debug unfortunatly

    Maybe the Tails AI Is dumb because they didn't program it and they make that so they remember their idea

      It’s not necessarily that Tails has no AI, it’s just that it was still very basic because of how early into development this build was. He just follows Sonic and copies everything he does exactly.

    The scraped levels are in sonic 2 delta and the scraped proto palace is in sonic 2 mobile but you need to use a cheat code in the sound test

      And the restored version of hidden palace is a secret in the iOS/android version through either level select or mystic cave act 2
