  • Sooooo... is a marketing degree worth it? When I was choosing a major in college I wish I would have come across a video like this that really put things into perspective. Like I mentioned in the video, I don't want to influence anyone's opinion, I just simply want to put my experience out there for others to take what they want from it. This is my personal experience so obviously everyone's experience will be different, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. Hope you enjoyed the video. Let me know if you have any questions. :)

I am crying watching this because it is so true. Most marketing jobs ask for adobe experience, google ads, SEO, and all these digital marketing features I was never thought of in college. And the income is low for entry-level jobs. I will advise anyone thinking about studying marketing to self-teach themselves and look for internships as early as possible and get as much experience as you can. Know what kind of marketing you want to do and get the experience for it.

So what you’re saying is. Make sure to Major in Digital Marketing, so your skill is relevant. Work hard and expect to have to work your way up. I had 4 years working in Finance before I deciding to go back to school for Marketing. Forget about the money, I made great money in Finance, but I worked 50 hours a week, it was also the most boring, stressful, depressing, exhausting, awful 4 years of my life.

I agree with you that Marketing programs are outdated. A marketing degree has become something to help you get your foot in the door. Everything else you have to learn as you said will either have to be by internships/jobs. The best way to increase your salary is to learn as much you can from your first entry level job and market yourself to either get a promotion or search for other jobs. Just some tips that have worked for me.

I think you made some really good points. I wanted to chip in some of my experience. Marketing is indeed very competitive and the starting salary is very low. However, there is also a very high demand for jobs and many job openings all around the world. Finance is paid more, but also crazy competitive and it does generally score lower on job satisfaction. I like Finance a lot and think it is a good major, however for people who want to combine analytical and creative skills I would recommend them to go to Marketing. Degrees are very cheap in Europe and the top unis usually teach many analytical skills. However social media marketing and creation are not taught by any of the unis I know of and I would recommend taking online courses during the study instead.

110% it really depends on the college. I've found 4 year colleges & Universities are extremely outdated in Media and Digital Degrees. (Marketing, Design, Graphics, or Film)
Unfortunately from a young age they're shoved down our throats.
Art schools or more creative college courses seem to be the most up-to-date when it comes to programs, systems, or methodologies yet it's very true in this day and age of social media colleges aren't teaching us how to use these things because what professor knows the ins & outs of how to use them.

You are preaching to the choir. A lot of my skills came from my own research. My teachers did tell me that all graduates are able to get into manager positions that pay more right out of college, you just have to make them believe that you are worth the riask. Not to mention Marketing majors need to know some HTML and CSS and possibly some python and were still getting paid less than software engineers. The programs are out dated and a lot of students leave their universities feeling extreamly inexperienced because of their lack of skills .

I do think that some job descriptions for certain marketing roles are unrealistic. Yes it might be good to have basic skills or knowledge in Adobe and design but they shouldn't expect to get one person to fill a role and do it all. On the flip side, neither should a graphic designer be hired and expect to come up with marketing campaigns and social media strategies on his/her own. Because that is certainly not his/her job either. So i do think that a lot of companies milk a person instead of hiring a fully equipped marketing team. (Speaking from personal experience.) - My major wasn't marketing but I work in marketing and television production now and you learn most of it by experience. I do think you have to have the passion to keep learning and staying up to date with the way marketing and advertising is now.

Indeed, there is intense competition in marketing, and the entry-level pay is really low. But there are also plenty of work opportunities and a significant demand for labour globally. Although finance pays more, it is also extremely competitive and has a usually lower work satisfaction rating. Though I think Finance is a great major and I really like it, I would advise someone who wants to combine analytical and creative talents to major in marketing. Nowadays, obtaining a marketing degree might help you open doors. As you mentioned, you will need to obtain internships or employment to learn anything else. Getting as much experience as you can from your initial entry-level work and marketing yourself to either seek a promotion or look for other employment is the greatest method to enhance your compensation.

Marketing & Buisness management have to be two of the most worthless degress from B-Schools. Technical skills are a must and you cant teach people marketing for something that's common sense. Either you get marketing or you dont. Just because you majored in it, doesnt make it so. 80% Of the people in my marketing department (an organization of 30k employees) didnt major in marketing.

08:45 this is very true. As someone who works in the corporate world in marketing, and mentors the grads on our intern programs, I've found what the universities are teaching students, the skills and concepts, is outdated This is why having a university degree does not chalk up to 'experience'. So here's what you need to know. Some companies really value marketing, while others don't - and salary is the primary indicator. Your goal should be to find a company that values its marketing people - money talks. Don't only apply for roles advertised, look for companies that you want to work for and apply to them directly. I know people who make more doing freelance work, from their parent's home, than if they worked in a global tech company. Experience is everything and that's mostly what employers care about. Having a degree is no longer enough of a differentiator, and experience gazumps a degree every single time. Also, understanding how to leverage the AI tools now available will give you an unfair advantage, as most people aren't using them nearly as effectively as they should.
